To add custom content to a Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS), install Bedrock add-ons rather than Java mods. Extract each .mcpack or .mcaddon, upload its behavior-pack and/or resource-pack folder to the server, register the pack’s header.uuid and header.version in the world’s JSON file, and restart the server. Uploading files without registering them will not attach them to the world.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The procedure below reflects consistent community practice. Bedrock pack formats and BDS behavior can change, so check the documentation for the BDS version you actually run before treating any step as an official specification.

What “mods” means on Bedrock
Bedrock Edition does not use the same Java-style mod-loader model as Minecraft Java Edition. On a dedicated Bedrock server, the supported customization discussed here is an add-on: one or both of these pack types:
- Behavior pack: changes gameplay logic, entities, recipes, rules, or other behavior defined by the pack.
- Resource pack: changes visuals and other client-facing resources such as textures, models, sounds, or UI assets.
A behavior pack does not provide visual changes by itself. If an add-on author supplies matching behavior and resource packs, install and attach both for the intended result. A file advertised as a “Bedrock mod” may therefore be a behavior pack, a resource pack, or a bundle containing both.

What you need before installing
- Access to the BDS server directory through your hosting panel’s file manager or through SFTP/FTP.
- The add-on files downloaded to a computer where you can extract archives.
- The name of the world the server loads, plus access to that world’s folder.
- A way to stop and start the server. A restart is the reliable way to apply changes to pack-registration files.
- A backup or disposable test world. Test one add-on at a time before changing a busy survival world.
Keep a copy of the original pack archive and of every JSON file you edit. If a pack prevents the world from loading, you can remove its registration and restore the previous files.
Choose an installation method
| Method | What you do | When it is useful | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct server-folder upload | Extract the pack locally, upload folders to behavior_packs/ and/or resource_packs/, then register them in the world JSON files. |
Repeatable installs and updates on an existing dedicated server. | Requires file access and accurate UUID/version entries. |
| Single-player world export | Load the add-on in a local Bedrock world, export or copy that world, and upload the resulting world to the server. | Useful when a pack is already configured in a local world and your host supports complete world replacement. | World-upload workflows differ by host and can overwrite server-world data. They are not as consistent as direct folder upload. |
Most dedicated-server instructions use direct folder upload. The single-player route can work, but it should not be treated as the only installation method or as a guarantee that every host will preserve the same settings.

Recognize the file type
Bedrock add-ons commonly arrive as .mcpack or .mcaddon. These extensions are renamed ZIP archives. BDS reads the extracted pack folders; it does not load the downloaded archive merely because the archive is present on the server.
- Save the downloaded file on your computer.
- Make a copy before changing its extension.
- Rename the working copy from
.mcpackor.mcaddonto.zip, or open it with an archive utility that recognizes ZIP files. - Extract the archive into a temporary folder.
- Identify which extracted folder is the behavior pack and which is the resource pack. Some bundles contain one of them; others contain both.
Do not upload the outer ZIP as a substitute for extraction. If the archive contains several folders, inspect each one for its own manifest.json; each independently installable pack needs its own folder and registration entry.
Step 2: Check the folder layout and manifest
The folder must contain manifest.json
Open the folder you intend to upload. The file manifest.json should be directly inside that folder, not hidden one level deeper. A common extraction mistake creates a path like MyPack/MyPack/manifest.json. In that case, upload the inner MyPack folder—the one that contains manifest.json—rather than the redundant outer folder.

Read the correct identifiers
Open the manifest as plain text and locate the top-level header object. Record:
header.uuid, which identifies the pack.header.version, which is the pack’s version array, such as[1,0,0]when that is what the manifest contains.
Use the UUID and version from header. Do not substitute a UUID from a module entry elsewhere in the manifest. If the pack includes separate behavior and resource manifests, read the header values from each manifest and register each pack separately.
Step 3: Upload the extracted folders
Behavior packs
Place the behavior-pack folder in the server’s behavior_packs/ directory. The folder you upload should contain manifest.json at its top level.
Resource packs
Place the resource-pack folder in the server’s resource_packs/ directory. Keep it as a separate folder even when it came from the same .mcaddon archive as the behavior pack.
Verify the resulting paths
Your server directory should have a structure equivalent to this (the pack-folder names are examples):

world_behavior_packs.json
world_resource_packs.json
The world directory may have a different name, and some panels display it through a file-manager interface instead of this exact tree. The two pack directories and the world folder are the important locations.
Step 4: Register packs in the world
Copying folders into the server directories does not attach them to a world. Registration is done with two JSON files inside the world folder:
world_behavior_packs.jsonfor behavior packs.world_resource_packs.jsonfor resource packs.
A commonly used world location is worlds/Bedrock level/, but use the folder for the world your server actually loads. If the server has several worlds, editing the JSON files in an unused world will have no effect on the active one.
Create or edit the behavior list
Open world_behavior_packs.json. Add one object for each behavior pack. The object uses the pack’s header UUID as pack_id and the exact header version array as version. A minimal example is:
[
{
"pack_id": "11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555",
"version": [1, 0, 0]
}
]
Replace the example values with the values from the behavior pack’s manifest. If the file already contains entries, preserve valid entries and add the new object with a comma between objects. Keep the outer square brackets and all JSON punctuation intact.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen

Create or edit the resource list
Open world_resource_packs.json and use the same structure for each resource pack, this time copying the resource pack’s own header.uuid and header.version:
[
{
"pack_id": "aaaaaaaa-bbbb-cccc-dddd-eeeeeeeeeeee",
"version": [1, 0, 0]
}
]
If an add-on contains only a behavior pack, update only the behavior file. If it contains only a resource pack, update only the resource file. Do not invent an entry for a pack that is not present on the server.
Keep the JSON valid
- JSON files cannot contain comments. Remove lines beginning with
//or block comments before saving. - Use double quotation marks around property names and string values.
- Do not leave a trailing comma after the last object in the array.
- Save as plain UTF-8. A byte-order mark (BOM) can cause a dedicated server to reject an otherwise correct JSON file.
- Ensure every
pack_idmatches a folder that is actually uploaded to the corresponding pack directory. - Ensure the version array in the world file exactly matches the manifest’s
header.version; a mismatch is a common reason for a pack not loading.
Step 5: Restart and test
- Save both JSON files and close the editor.
- Stop the BDS instance using your host’s normal stop control.
- Start the server again and wait for the world to finish loading.
- Join with a Bedrock client compatible with the server and inspect the behavior or visual change the add-on is supposed to provide.
- Test on a staging or copied world first, especially when several packs alter the same entities, items, recipes, or textures.
Some setups appear to accept /reload, but a dedicated-server console may not apply pack changes through that command. Treat a full restart as the dependable activation step instead of assuming that /reload has taken effect.

Pack order, overrides, and conflicts
When two packs define the same content, their order can affect which definition or texture is used. Community instructions do not agree on a single universal direction: one description gives higher priority to entries listed first in world_resource_packs.json, while another says the last behavior-pack entry wins for overlapping content. Because those statements conflict, do not rely on a presumed first-wins or last-wins rule.
Use a controlled test to determine the result for your server and pack combination:
Best Value
- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Make a copy of the world and record the current order in both JSON files.
- Use an unmistakable test asset or behavior supplied by one pack.
- Change only the order of the relevant entries, restart, and observe the result.
- Keep the order that produces the intended outcome and document it for future updates.
If a pack author states a required order, follow that instruction while still testing it on your BDS version. Avoid adding multiple packs that overwrite the same files unless you have a reason to control the conflict.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The pack does not appear to have any effect. | The folder was uploaded but not registered, or the edited world is not the active world. | Confirm the pack’s object is in the correct world JSON file and that you edited the world the server actually loads. |
| The server rejects the JSON file or fails during startup. | Invalid JSON syntax, comments, a BOM, or an accidental trailing comma. | Remove comments, save as plain UTF-8, check brackets and commas, and restore the last known-good file if necessary. |
| The pack is listed but still does not load. | The version array does not match the manifest. | Copy header.version again exactly, including every number and its order. |
| The server cannot find a registered pack. | The pack_id does not match an uploaded folder or the entry points to the wrong pack type. |
Compare the UUID in the JSON with the relevant manifest and confirm the folder is under behavior_packs/ or resource_packs/ as appropriate. |
| The server loads, but a texture or behavior is not the one expected. | Another pack overrides the same content, and pack-priority behavior differs by setup. | Test entry order on a staging world and remove overlapping packs while isolating the conflict. |
| Only visuals or only gameplay changes appear. | Only one half of a paired add-on was installed. | Check whether the download supplied both behavior and resource manifests, then upload and register the missing half. |
| The pack worked previously but fails after a server update. | Compatibility between the current server software and the pack may have changed. | Keep BDS current, compare the pack’s stated compatibility with the server version, and test the pack on a copy of the world before re-enabling it. |
| The server starts after removing a pack. | A registration entry or pack folder was malformed. | Leave the failing entry removed, restore the backup, and add packs back one at a time to identify the offending folder or manifest. |
Updating or removing an add-on
Updating
- Stop the server and back up the existing pack folder and both world JSON files.
- Upload the new extracted folder, keeping the top-level
manifest.jsonlayout intact. - Read the new manifest’s
header.uuidandheader.version. Do not assume the old version remains valid. - Update the matching object in the world JSON file. If the UUID changed, replace the old object rather than leaving both versions registered.
- Start the server and test the world copy before applying the change to the live world.
Removing
- Stop the server.
- Delete that pack’s object from the relevant world JSON file.
- Remove the corresponding folder from
behavior_packs/orresource_packs/if no other world needs it. - Start the server and verify that the world no longer depends on the removed content.
Keep the old folder and registration backup until you have confirmed that the world opens and players can use the content they still need.

Direct upload versus uploading a configured world
Direct upload keeps pack files and world registration visible on the server, making it easier to audit UUIDs, versions, and individual updates. Uploading a configured single-player world can be convenient when the pack is already working locally, but it couples the installation to that world export and to the host’s world-replacement process. It can also overwrite existing world data if handled carelessly. For a long-running server, direct folder upload is generally the clearer method; use a world export when you specifically need to transfer a complete configured world and have verified how your host handles it.
Compatibility and support limits
Pack compatibility depends on the BDS software version, the pack’s manifest and content, and any other packs active in the world. The procedure above does not establish that Java Edition mods can run on Bedrock, nor does it provide a universal supported pack-format version. Treat an add-on as compatible only after testing it with the exact server build and world you intend to use.
Because the procedural guidance available for this workflow comes from community hosting guides rather than a retrieved Microsoft or Mojang BDS specification, labels and behavior can differ between server builds and hosting panels. Keep an export of the working configuration, update cautiously, and consult the current official BDS documentation for version-specific requirements when it is available.
Quick Recap
Quick verification checklist
- The download was extracted from
.mcpackor.mcaddon, not uploaded as an archive. - Each uploaded pack folder contains
manifest.jsondirectly at its top level. - Behavior content is under
behavior_packs/; visual content is underresource_packs/. header.uuidandheader.versionwere copied from the correct manifest.- The behavior pack is registered in
world_behavior_packs.json; the resource pack is registered inworld_resource_packs.json. - The edited files belong to the world the server actually loads.
- The JSON contains no comments, BOM, malformed commas, or entries for missing folders.
- The server was fully restarted after the edits.
- Pack order was tested on a disposable world when definitions overlap.
