Start with the game’s default graphics configuration and Proton Stable. SteamDB lists PaperPixel Games’ Brick by Brick: Tidy Up the Small Town! (Steam App ID 5228920) as Playable on Steam Deck and says its default configuration performs well on SteamOS. The documented drawback is small in-game text, not a confirmed frame-rate, battery or power problem.

Quick answer: the best starting setup

For PaperPixel Games’ Brick by Brick: Tidy Up the Small Town!, the evidence-backed Steam Deck setup is deliberately simple: leave the game’s graphics at their defaults and run it with Proton Stable. SteamDB’s compatibility metadata says the default graphics configuration performs well, the game runs successfully on SteamOS, and Proton Stable is the recommended runtime.

Setting Recommended starting value Why
Game graphics Default configuration SteamDB specifically reports that the defaults perform well on Steam Deck.
Compatibility tool Proton Stable SteamDB lists Proton Stable as the recommended runtime for the tested configuration.
Steam Deck display controls Leave unchanged initially No published Brick by Brick benchmark establishes a better cap, refresh rate, TDP limit or scaling mode.
Text handling Use system magnification or move closer to the display when needed Small in-game text is the compatibility record’s named limitation.

This recommendation applies to App ID 5228920. Confirm that ID before changing settings, because Steam also lists a different game called Brick By Brick by Delirium Tremens Games.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A separate Brick By Brick by Delirium Tremens Games uses App ID 3726970. Steam lists that title as a 2D fantasy brick-breaker released on 20 February 2026, with a minimum graphics-card requirement dating from 2006 or later. The PaperPixel settings recommendation should not be transferred to it.

How to check the App ID on Steam Deck

  1. Open Library in Gaming Mode and select the installed game.
  2. Open the game’s page and check the title, developer and store details.
  3. For a definitive identity check, open Settings for the game and look at its store or installation information; the App ID should be 5228920 for the PaperPixel release.
  4. If the developer is Delirium Tremens Games or the App ID is 3726970, stop using this guide’s settings. That game needs its own compatibility testing.

Why the default graphics profile is the right choice

Steam Deck compatibility metadata is not the same as a laboratory benchmark, but it answers the practical first question: whether the title’s shipped configuration is a sensible baseline. For App ID 5228920, SteamDB records that the default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck. That means there is no evidence-based reason to lower image quality immediately or to force a nonstandard rendering profile before playing.

Keeping the defaults also gives you a clean baseline if a later change causes a problem. Change one control at a time, play the same type of town-building scene, and revert the last change if readability, smoothness or stability gets worse.

What “default” does and does not promise

  • It is a compatibility starting point, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate.
  • It does not establish a fixed battery-life result, wattage figure or frame-time curve.
  • It does not mean every future game build will behave identically.
  • It does mean the available Steam Deck record does not call for an immediate low preset, custom launch option or experimental Proton version.

Set Proton Stable in Gaming Mode

SteamDB lists proton-stable as the recommended runtime for the tested configuration. Use that runtime unless a future update changes the compatibility guidance or the game fails on your device.

Installation and selection steps

  1. Open the game’s page in your Steam Deck Library.
  2. Select the gear icon to open the game’s settings.
  3. Choose Properties, then open Compatibility.
  4. Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool if it is not already enabled.
  5. Select the installed Proton Stable entry. Do not select an experimental or community build merely because it is newer.
  6. Close Properties and launch the game once. If it starts and plays normally, leave the runtime unchanged.

If Proton Stable is already selected automatically, do not override it. A runtime change is a troubleshooting step, not a graphics upgrade.

Steam Deck display settings: what to leave alone

No source establishes a Brick by Brick-specific refresh-rate target, frame limiter value, wattage limit or battery result. Consequently, there is no defensible “set it to 30,” “set it to 40” or “use this TDP” prescription for this game. Start with the Deck’s normal display behavior and the game’s own defaults.

When a frame limit is worth trying

If you personally prefer a quieter fan or steadier pacing, you can try a frame limit through Steam Deck’s performance overlay. Treat the limit as a personal preference and compare the result with the uncapped default; it is not a measured Brick by Brick recommendation. Keep notes on input feel, visible judder and battery drain during the same activity rather than assuming a lower cap is automatically better.

When not to change scaling or power controls

  • Do not lower resolution to solve text that is already too small; that can make lettering less legible.
  • Do not enable a TDP limit based on a claimed wattage number; no such measurement is established for this title.
  • Do not add launch options unless a specific error requires one. Unnecessary options make later troubleshooting harder.

Fixing the documented small-text problem

SteamDB identifies one specific limitation for this game: some in-game text is small and may be difficult to read. This is a readability issue, not evidence that the game is failing to render correctly.

Try the least disruptive fixes first

  1. Move the Deck closer or change your viewing angle so the display is not catching glare.
  2. Check the game’s own settings for a text-size, interface-scale or subtitle-size control. If the game exposes one, increase it and keep the graphics preset otherwise unchanged.
  3. Use Steam Deck’s built-in magnifier when you need to inspect a specific label or instruction. Assign the magnifier in the Deck’s controller settings if it is not already mapped, then activate it only for the hard-to-read area.
  4. In Desktop Mode, use the operating system’s accessibility magnification for text that remains difficult to inspect. Return to Gaming Mode after making system changes.
  5. If text is still unreadable, capture the exact screen, note whether the problem affects menus, objectives or world labels, and report it to the developer through the game’s support channel.

Avoid reducing the game’s resolution as a first response. A lower internal resolution can soften letter edges and make the stated limitation more noticeable.

A safe tuning workflow if the defaults do not suit you

The compatibility record supports the defaults, but individual Deck units, display preferences and game updates can differ. Use a controlled sequence rather than changing several variables at once.

  1. Record the baseline. Launch with default graphics and Proton Stable. Note whether the issue is text clarity, visible stutter, a crash, input behavior or battery usage.
  2. Reproduce the issue. Return to the same town area or menu so each change is compared under similar conditions.
  3. Change one setting. If the game offers separate quality controls, adjust only the control related to the symptom. Keep a note of the original value.
  4. Test for several minutes. Look for the original symptom and for new problems such as blur, texture pop-in, delayed input or instability.
  5. Keep or revert. If the change does not help, restore it before trying another. If it helps, document the value so you can recreate it after an update.
  6. Return to defaults before escalation. If several changes have accumulated, restore the default profile and test Proton Stable again. This distinguishes a game update problem from a local configuration problem.

Troubleshooting branches

The game will not launch

  1. Confirm that you have App ID 5228920 and the PaperPixel Games release.
  2. Open Properties > Compatibility and select Proton Stable.
  3. Fully exit the game and restart the Deck, then try one clean launch.
  4. Remove any custom launch options and test the default graphics configuration.
  5. If the failure began after an update, record the game build and the exact error before contacting support. Compatibility can change with a new build.

The game launches but looks blurry

  • Restore the game’s default graphics profile.
  • Check that you did not lower the Deck’s game resolution or enable an aggressive scaling mode.
  • Inspect text at the native handheld display before judging the whole image; the known limitation concerns small lettering and may not indicate a general rendering failure.

You see stutter or uneven motion

  • First test the untouched defaults with Proton Stable.
  • Close other running games or demanding background tasks.
  • Compare the same scene with any personal frame limit disabled and then enabled. Keep whichever feels steadier; neither result is a published benchmark.
  • Do not infer a guaranteed 30, 40 or 60 frames per second from the Playable label.

Controls or icons seem wrong

SteamDB records full default-controller functionality and matching Steam Deck controller icons for the tested configuration. If controls do not match, verify that you are using the PaperPixel title, clear any custom controller layout temporarily, and retest with the game’s default layout.

What the Steam Deck compatibility record actually establishes

Item Established information How to interpret it
Deck rating Playable The title has a positive but not perfect compatibility classification.
Operating system Runs successfully on SteamOS SteamOS is the intended Deck environment for this recommendation.
Graphics profile Default configuration performs well Use the shipped profile before experimenting.
Runtime Proton Stable recommended Keep the stable runtime unless troubleshooting requires a controlled test.
Controller support Full default-controller functionality and matching Deck icons Standard controls should be available without a custom layout.
Limitation Some in-game text may be difficult to read Plan for magnification or an in-game text-size option.
Test date 16 October 2026, tested build 25964658 Results describe that build and may change after updates.

Numbers you should not treat as benchmarks

There is no cited independent testing for a fixed frame rate, frame-time result, wattage draw or battery life. Any precise figure in those categories would require new hands-on measurement under a stated Deck model, brightness, refresh rate, scene and power profile. The compatibility record’s “Playable” status and “default configuration performs well” statement do not supply those measurements.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

That distinction matters when choosing between settings. If your priority is battery life, measure your own session from a known charge level and record brightness and performance controls. If your priority is smooth motion, compare the same scene with your preferred frame limit. Label those observations as your device’s results rather than as universal Brick by Brick specifications.

Keeping the setup reliable after updates

  • After a game update, launch once with the default graphics profile and Proton Stable before restoring custom tweaks.
  • Check the title and App ID again if Steam presents similarly named products.
  • If the game changes from launching normally to failing, capture the build number, Proton selection and error message.
  • Re-test text readability after interface changes; a patch can alter font size or menu layout even when performance is unchanged.
  • Only move away from Proton Stable when a reproducible problem gives you a reason to test another runtime.

The current compatibility test is dated 16 October 2026 and references build 25964658. Treat that date as the scope of the published result, not a promise that every later build will behave identically.

Bottom line for PaperPixel’s Brick by Brick

For App ID 5228920, use the default in-game graphics configuration and Proton Stable. The title is listed as Playable, runs successfully on SteamOS, supports the Deck’s default controller behavior and has matching controller icons. Prepare for small text, using an in-game size control or Steam Deck magnification rather than immediately lowering resolution. There is not enough evidence to claim a particular FPS, battery life or wattage target, so tune those controls only to your own preference and measurements.
