Assuming the “Harry Potter RPG” means Hogwarts Legacy, the best starting point is not a universal preset. On PC, open Graphics Options, run Run Benchmark, apply the suggested global preset, and then tune resolution, upscaling, frame-rate limiting and ray tracing for your display. On PS5, choose Performance for the smoothest motion or Fidelity for higher image quality. Your ideal settings depend on the hardware, resolution and frame-rate target.
What “smooth” means in Hogwarts Legacy
A smooth game is one that holds a frame rate your display and hardware can sustain, without distracting stutter or large swings when you enter busy areas. A higher peak number is less useful than a consistent result. Decide these three things before changing individual options:

- Output resolution: 1080p, 1440p or 2160p (4K).
- Frame-rate goal: for example, a stable 30, 60 or a higher refresh-rate target supported by your display.
- Image-quality priority: native rendering and maximum detail, or a performance-oriented upscaler that renders internally at a lower resolution.
Hogwarts Legacy’s PC menu has four global quality presets plus separate controls. Portkey Games says quality adjustments can affect GPU performance, CPU performance or VRAM, so a setting that helps one computer may not be the best choice on another.

PC: the correct order for tuning
1. Run the built-in benchmark first
- Launch the game and open Settings.
- Go to Graphics Options.
- Scroll near the bottom and select Run Benchmark.
- Let the analysis finish, then apply the suggested global quality preset.
- Play the same demanding area for several minutes before making further changes.
The benchmark analyzes your setup and saves a recommended global preset. It is a starting point, not a guarantee of a fixed frame rate in every scene. After applying it, change only one or two controls at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.

2. Set resolution and upscaling to match the target
The game normally targets your monitor’s active display resolution. Its menu documents separate controls for display resolution, rendering resolution, upscale type, upscale mode and sharpness. Available choices can vary by device, but the PC options include NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS. NVIDIA DLSS frame generation is also documented in the PC FAQ.
Upscaling renders the scene at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution output. Performance modes generally raise frame rate by reducing the internal rendering workload, with some loss of image quality. Test an upscaler only after checking whether native rendering can hold your goal.
- Keep output resolution at the resolution you actually use on the monitor.
- Start with the least aggressive quality-oriented mode available for your upscaler.
- Compare native rendering and the upscaled image in the same location, looking at foliage, hair, distant geometry and fine text.
- If performance still dips, move one step toward a performance mode and check for shimmer, softness or ghosting.
- Adjust the sharpness control only after choosing the mode; excessive sharpening can make edges look noisy.
Do not expect a particular FPS gain from DLSS, FSR or XeSS without testing your own hardware. The result depends on the GPU, CPU, output resolution and the scene being rendered.

3. Choose a frame-rate cap and synchronization policy
Use a cap your system can sustain rather than the highest number the menu permits. A lower frame-rate cap can reduce stuttering, according to the official PC FAQ. VSync is enabled by default and limits the GPU to no more than the monitor’s refresh rate.
- Fixed-refresh display: choose a cap that your computer can maintain in demanding locations, then leave VSync enabled if tearing is distracting.
- Variable-refresh display: use a hardware-supported refresh range and cap below the display’s practical maximum when necessary to keep frame pacing inside that range.
- Unstable performance: lower the cap before dropping every quality setting. Consistency often looks smoother than a fluctuating uncapped result.
There is no evidence-based universal cap such as 60 FPS for every PC. Match the cap to the display and the frame rate your hardware can actually sustain.
4. Keep ray tracing off while solving performance problems
Ray tracing is disabled by default. Separate controls are available for ray-traced reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion. Enabling or disabling ray tracing requires a restart, and the official FAQ says it affects both GPU and CPU performance.

- Turn ray tracing off while establishing a stable baseline.
- Restart the game if you change the ray-tracing setting.
- Only after ordinary rendering is stable, enable the feature and test the same area.
- If frame pacing worsens or the frame rate falls below your target, disable it again or reduce other settings rather than assuming the feature is free.
Ray tracing can improve reflections, shadows and ambient shading, but its value is subjective and its performance cost is hardware-dependent.

Use the following descriptions to decide what to lower first. The official documentation explains each setting’s visual role but does not assign a universal FPS cost to individual options. The most expensive control can differ between a GPU-limited and CPU-limited system.

A practical adjustment sequence
- Apply the benchmark’s preset and verify the target resolution.
- Set a sustainable frame-rate cap.
- Disable ray tracing and restart.
- Use a quality-oriented upscaling mode if native rendering misses the target.
- If dips remain, lower the setting whose visual effect is least important to you, testing after each change.
- Reduce texture quality only when memory pressure or visible streaming problems suggest it; do not lower it automatically on every system.
- Recheck a busy interior, an outdoor area and a populated settlement before deciding the settings are stable.
Official PC hardware targets
Warner Bros. Games publishes the following example configurations. They are reference targets, not independent benchmark results or a promise that every scene will perform identically. The specifications page was accessed October 13, 2026 and does not display a publication date; its 2024 copyright footer is not necessarily the release date.

The official FAQ recommends at least 16 GB of memory and says an SSD is preferred. The specification table still lists an HDD as supported for the minimum/low tier. An SSD is therefore not a universal cure for graphics-related slowdowns; it is a storage preference and requirement that varies by target configuration.
Choose a PC profile by display and hardware
1080p with a 60-FPS goal
Use the benchmark’s recommendation as the baseline, keep ray tracing disabled while tuning, and prioritize a stable cap. If native rendering falls short, try a quality-oriented DLSS, FSR or XeSS mode available on your device. Lower individual quality settings only when testing shows a repeatable improvement.
1440p with a 60-FPS goal
The official Ultra reference pairs this output with 32 GB of RAM and high-end graphics hardware. If your system is below that example, retain the 1440p output but use upscaling, a less demanding global preset or a lower frame-rate target. Do not assume the Ultra label alone will hold 60 FPS in every area.

4K with a 60-FPS goal
The published Ultra 4K example uses a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XT class GPU, a listed high-end processor and 32 GB of memory. If your hardware is weaker, reducing internal rendering through an available upscaler is the first quality-preserving test. Ray tracing should remain off unless the system still has substantial performance headroom.
Older or entry-level hardware
Start with the minimum/low reference as a ceiling for expectations: 720p at 30 FPS on Low is the publisher’s example. Use the benchmark, a conservative cap and the least aggressive visual compromises that keep frame pacing stable. The official figures do not establish results for every combination of older processors, graphics cards, drivers or memory configurations.

Frame rate is low everywhere
- Confirm the output and rendering resolutions are not higher than intended.
- Disable ray tracing and restart.
- Try an upscaling mode.
- Lower the global preset one step, then retest before changing several individual settings.
Dips happen mainly in towns or crowded scenes
- Test Population Quality first because it controls non-essential NPCs and creatures.
- Use a lower cap if the system is oscillating around the target.
- Check whether CPU performance, rather than GPU load, is limiting the scene; the game’s settings can affect either component.
Dips happen outdoors or in weather
- Test Foliage Quality, Fog Quality and Sky Quality, each separately.
- Compare the same route with ray tracing disabled.
- Keep a written note of each change so you can restore image quality after identifying the limiting control.
The image looks soft, shimmery or ghosted
- Move from a performance upscaling mode toward a quality mode.
- Compare the result with native rendering at the same location.
- Adjust sharpness modestly rather than using it to compensate for an overly aggressive internal resolution.
Stutter persists despite a high average FPS
- Set a lower frame-rate cap and test frame pacing again.
- Keep VSync enabled unless your display setup gives you a reason to change it.
- Check demanding areas rather than judging smoothness from a quiet corridor.
- Change one control at a time; broad simultaneous changes make the cause difficult to identify.
PS5 graphics modes
On PS5, use Display Options to choose a mode rather than adjusting the PC sliders individually.

Balanced and HFR Performance are not PC presets; they are console mode choices whose availability depends on the connected display. The PS5 Pro update released November 4, 2024 improved and optimized visuals and performance across modes on PS5 Pro. Those changes should not be generalized to the base PS5 or other platforms.
When buying hardware is actually justified
Use the benchmark and the official target table before spending money. A graphics-card upgrade is relevant when your chosen resolution and quality target exceed the capability of the current GPU, but it is not a universal solution: a CPU, memory, VRAM or display limitation may be the actual bottleneck. Match any upgrade to the target tier rather than buying the fastest card available. The official configurations are reference points for 720p/30 Low, 1080p/60 High, 1440p/60 Ultra and 2160p/60 Ultra, not guarantees for every build.

Bottom line for a smooth Hogwarts Legacy setup
On PC, run Run Benchmark, apply its preset, set a realistic cap, disable ray tracing while troubleshooting, and use DLSS, FSR or XeSS only as needed to meet the target. Then adjust the setting whose visual effect you are willing to trade away, testing in the same demanding locations after each change. On PS5, Performance is the straightforward smooth-play choice; Fidelity, Balanced and HFR Performance serve different displays and image-quality priorities. The published hardware tiers help set expectations, but no single settings list can guarantee the same frame rate on every machine.
