For smoother survival-horror games, start with the resolution and frame-rate goal you actually want, confirm your PC meets that specific game’s requirements, then use its supported upscaling and reduce demanding optional effects such as ray tracing. There is no universal best preset: the right balance depends on the game, hardware, display resolution and available graphics options.
How to tune settings for smoother play
- Choose a resolution and frame-rate goal. Decide whether you prefer a stable, lower target or sharper output with more variable performance. A stable experience can feel better than fluctuating peaks, but no universal frame-rate target is established for every player or game.
- Check the game’s requirements and targets. Compare your CPU, GPU and memory with the requirements for the exact game. Treat the publisher’s stated targets as guidance for that title, not a guarantee for every system or graphics configuration.
- Use an upscaler the game supports. Upscaling can pair a lower internal render resolution with a higher output resolution, but quality and performance vary by title, hardware and mode. Test the options available in the game rather than assuming one mode is always best.
- Reduce expensive optional effects first. If the game offers ray tracing or path tracing, lower or disable it and compare. Then adjust other quality controls one at a time, checking both image quality and how consistently the game feels during play.
- Recheck after changes. Test a representative gameplay area, not just a menu or quiet scene. If performance remains poor, check drivers, GPU selection and power settings before lowering every visual setting.
Why ray tracing can be a major trade-off
Ray tracing and path tracing can change lighting and reflections, but their cost depends on the game and hardware. Alan Wake 2 is a specific example, not a preset recommendation for every survival-horror game: NVIDIA describes its Low ray-tracing preset as using no path tracing, Medium as partial path tracing, and High as full path tracing.

| Alan Wake 2 preset | Path-tracing behavior described by NVIDIA |
|---|---|
| Low | No path tracing |
| Medium | Partial path tracing: one bounce, with ray-traced ambient occlusion on the final hit |
| High | Full path tracing: three bounces, with ray-traced ambient occlusion on the final hit |
NVIDIA recommends DLSS Ray Reconstruction for performance with ray tracing in Alan Wake 2. NVIDIA says the feature replaces two denoisers and ran up to 14% faster in its benchmarks; this is a vendor-reported result, not a guarantee for other games or current systems. NVIDIA’s guide says DLSS Super Resolution supports RTX GPUs and Frame Generation supports RTX 40 Series in that guide. Frame Generation can increase displayed frames, but a generated frame rate should not be treated as equivalent to native responsiveness; the available evidence does not establish a universal latency threshold or recommendation. See NVIDIA’s Alan Wake 2 graphics and DLSS guide.
NVIDIA also reported historical performance multipliers for RTX 40 Series in Alan Wake 2: at 4K with full ray tracing and maximum settings, 4.1× on RTX 4090 and 4.7× on RTX 4080/4070 Ti when Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction and Super Resolution were activated; an average 3× at 1440p and 2.7× at 1080p under its described settings. The page identifies these captures as using a pre-release build. They are vendor-reported results from 2023, not expected multipliers for the current game build or other GPUs.

Use each game’s requirements as a reality check
SILENT HILL 2 on PC
KONAMI’s Steam listing gives useful game-specific targets: the minimum tier, including a GTX 1070 Ti, Radeon RX 5700 or Intel Arc A750, is described as targeting stable 30 FPS at 1080p on Low/Medium. The recommended tier, including an RTX 2080 or RX 6800 XT, is described as targeting 60 FPS on Medium or 30 FPS on High in Full HD, or 4K using DLSS or similar. Both tiers list 16 GB RAM and 50 GB available storage; the listing recommends an SSD. These are listing targets, not independent guarantees. The SSD recommendation concerns storage and should not be taken as a promise of higher frame rates. Check the current SILENT HILL 2 Steam listing for requirements and updates.
Resident Evil 2 on PC
If Resident Evil 2 performs poorly, Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance is to check minimum requirements, update graphics drivers and Windows, check graphics-driver and computer power settings, update DirectX, and verify the game files through Steam. On a laptop with switchable graphics, confirm the game is assigned to the dedicated high-performance GPU; connect the charger and check the power plan. Follow Capcom support guidance for the game rather than assuming a graphics slider is the cause.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Check PC and laptop settings before reducing image quality
- Update software: Install current graphics drivers and Windows updates; for Resident Evil 2, Capcom also advises checking DirectX and verifying Steam game files.
- Confirm GPU selection: On laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics, make sure the game uses the high-performance GPU. Capcom specifically includes this check in its Resident Evil 2 laptop guidance.
- Check power: Connect the laptop charger and verify the computer’s power mode or plan. A power-saving configuration can limit performance.
- Change settings incrementally: Lower one demanding setting at a time and test in the same gameplay conditions, so you can identify which trade-off actually helps.
Console options are different from PC sliders
On console, use the game’s available performance or fidelity modes and keep the platform updated; PC-specific advice about GPU drivers and individual graphics sliders does not apply in the same way. Sony announced in March 2026 that upgraded PSSR support includes SILENT HILL 2 and SILENT HILL f on PS5 Pro. Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes frames to upscale visuals. Availability and behavior are platform- and game-specific; consult the current game and system menus. Details are in Sony’s PlayStation Blog announcement.
When an upgrade is worth considering
Consider new hardware only after comparing your current system with the exact game’s requirements and checking software, GPU selection and power settings. The Silent Hill 2 listing’s SSD recommendation supports installation and storage guidance; it does not establish that an SSD raises FPS. A GPU upgrade is likewise conditional on the game, resolution and performance goal—these title-specific targets do not identify one universally suitable graphics card.
