Can you digitize an Xbox game disc?
Yes, if the game and disc are eligible and the feature is available to your account. Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs are supported, but not all; eligibility can change. As of October 4, 2026, the official information available here does not confirm that the feature is generally available. How to add an eligible disc game to your digital library
- Check the game and disc. The announced feature covers eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. Xbox says most qualify, but eligibility is title-specific and may change.
- Use a supported console with a disc drive. Insert the qualifying game disc into a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console.
- Launch the game. Xbox’s announced flow is to insert the disc and launch the game to claim the digital entitlement. Exact menu labels and button prompts have not been confirmed in the official information cited here, so follow the prompts actually shown on your console.
- Check your library and install the game. If the entitlement is granted, find the game through your Xbox account or library experience and install or play it using the options supported for that title.
- Keep the qualifying disc. The license is conditional on continued possession of that disc; it is not a standalone digital copy you can transfer independently.
What the digital entitlement does—and does not—give you
Xbox describes the entitlement as limited and tied to continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft’s usage rules say it may require revalidation and may suspend or revoke the license if you no longer possess the disc. The disc is therefore still important even after you claim the entitlement.

These are different license arrangements. For ordinary backward-compatible disc installs, Xbox says the game downloads to console storage but still requires the disc in the drive to play. See Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance.

Can you play disc games on Xbox Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is digital-only and has no physical game-disc drive, so it cannot read or use an Xbox game disc for either route described above. Connecting a USB optical drive does not turn it into a disc-reading console. You need a supported disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X console to use a qualifying disc.

How many games are eligible?
When announcing the feature in 2026, Xbox described it as starting with “thousands of titles” and said not every title would be available at launch. That is a launch-era description, not a current count or a complete eligibility list. Check Xbox’s current guidance for a particular game before relying on it.
