But it is not the best fit for everyone. Thronefall is a better premium strategy pick, Balatro is ideal for replayable solo sessions, Stardew Valley offers the most long-term value, and Sneaky Sasquatch is the strongest family-friendly Apple Arcade recommendation.
This guide covers the best games available on iPhone during 2025—not only games first released in 2025. Recommendations are separated by play style, payment model, connectivity, and control scheme. Apple’s official award makes Pokémon TCG Pocket the most defensible overall recommendation, but awards do not measure price, offline play, battery use, controller comfort, or tolerance for in-app purchases. Treat the award as one useful signal rather than a complete ranking. Apple’s 2025 awards page also lists Thronefall and Capybara Go! as iPhone finalists.

The best iPhone games in 2025
Pokémon TCG Pocket: best overall
Pokémon TCG Pocket is built around the strengths of a phone: short matches, quick collection sessions, and an interface designed for touch. It is a particularly good starting point for Pokémon fans and players who want something they can play for a few minutes at a time.
#1 Best Overall
- Controller compatibility: Xbox Series X Controller, Xbox Series S Controller, Xbox One Bluetooth Controller, PS5/PS4/PS3 Controller, Switch Pro, Wii Mote, Wii U Pro.
- 8BitDo Controller compatibility: all 8BitDo Bluetooth Controllers and arcade stick.
- System compatibility: Switch, Windows, macOS, Steam Deck & Raspberry Pis and more. USB Wireless Adapter 2 is compatible with Steam Deck now.
- Support 6-axis motion on Switch and Vibration on X-input mode.
- Supports ultimate software - customize button mapping, adjust stick & trigger sensitivity, vibration control and create macros with any button combination.
The important qualification is its business model. It is free to download but includes collection-oriented in-app purchases. Players who dislike randomized packs, daily limits, or progression tied to collecting should choose a premium game instead. Multiplayer and account-related features may also require connectivity, so check the current listing if offline access matters.
Choose it if: you want a polished mobile-first card game with short sessions.
Skip it if: you want a complete premium game with no purchase prompts.
Thronefall: best strategy game
Thronefall combines compact real-time strategy, base building, defense, and repeatable runs. It is a strong alternative to free-to-play strategy games because its appeal comes from making better tactical decisions rather than managing timers, currencies, or a sprawling social system.

Confirm the current edition’s price, offline behavior, controller support, and included content before purchase; those details can differ between storefront versions and updates.
Choose it if: you want focused strategy that fits a phone screen.
Skip it if: you prefer relaxed farming, puzzle solving, or a story-led adventure.
Balatro: best roguelike deck-builder
Balatro turns poker-inspired combinations into a highly replayable deck-building game. Runs are easy to start and difficult to optimize, making it suitable for both short commutes and long sessions. Because it is turn-based, it avoids many of the precision problems that affect action games on a touchscreen.
Rank #2
- WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.
- MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
- HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
The standalone App Store version and Apple Arcade’s Balatro+ edition should not be treated as identical automatically. A standalone purchase may suit someone who wants access without a subscription; Balatro+ is attractive to an active Apple Arcade subscriber. Check save behavior, included content, and availability for the edition you choose. Apple included Balatro+ in its U.S. list of top Apple Arcade games of 2025, which is separate from its principal iPhone Game of the Year award. See Apple’s 2025 Apple Arcade selections.
Choose it if: you enjoy experimentation, strategy, and “one more run” replayability.
Skip it if: you want a conventional story campaign or real-time action.
Stardew Valley: best long-term game
Stardew Valley remains one of the strongest premium games on iPhone because it offers a substantial world without energy timers, competitive pressure, or a requirement to spend continuously. Farming, relationships, exploration, fishing, and gradual upgrades give it enough depth to occupy dozens of relaxed sessions.
Its slower pace is also its main limitation. Inventory management and small interface elements can feel less comfortable on an iPhone than on a larger screen. The standalone game and Stardew Valley+ are different purchase paths; Apple included the latter in its 2025 Apple Arcade selections.
Choose it if: you want a calm game with a great deal to do.
Skip it if: you need immediate action or five-minute matches with a clear ending.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVampire Survivors: best for short action sessions
Vampire Survivors reduces action play to movement, positioning, upgrades, and survival. Its automatic-attack structure works naturally on a touchscreen and makes each run easy to begin. It is a good recommendation for players who want action without learning a complex virtual control layout.

- Easy to attach to your smartphone, no tools or modification necessary.
That simplicity can feel shallow if you expect direct aiming, combos, or traditional character controls. Check the current listing for advertising, downloadable content, in-app purchases, cloud saves, and offline behavior.
Dead Cells: best premium action game
Dead Cells is a demanding roguelike action game with responsive combat, exploration, and repeated attempts. It is one of the better examples of a substantial premium game on iPhone, particularly for players who want depth rather than a daily mobile routine.
Touch controls are usable but can be less precise than a physical controller, especially as difficulty rises. Confirm which downloadable content is included in the current edition and check supported controllers before buying.
Recommended Free Tools
Best iPhone games by genre
Best RPG and life simulation: Stardew Valley
Choose Stardew Valley for a slow, open-ended RPG-like experience built around farming, relationships, exploration, and personal goals. It is more substantial than most casual mobile games but does not demand constant online participation.
Best strategy: Thronefall
Thronefall is the best fit for compact strategy sessions. It gives each decision more weight than a typical phone time-management game and avoids the clutter of many free-to-play empire builders.
Best card game: Pokémon TCG Pocket
For Pokémon fans and players who want short competitive matches, Pokémon TCG Pocket is the obvious choice. Its free entry point is convenient, but its in-app purchases mean that it is not the best recommendation for readers who want a strictly premium experience.

Best puzzle adventure: The Room series
The The Room games are a strong fit for touchscreens because examining objects, turning mechanisms, and solving tactile puzzles feel more natural than virtual buttons. Choose a specific current entry from the App Store rather than assuming every game in the series has identical compatibility, pricing, or offline behavior.
Best cozy game: Hello Kitty Island Adventure
Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a good Apple Arcade choice for players who prefer exploration, customization, and a friendly social atmosphere over combat. It is included in Apple’s U.S. 2025 Apple Arcade selections. Its subscription requirement is the main consideration.
Best tower defense: Bloons TD 6+
Bloons TD 6+ is the Apple Arcade pick for players who enjoy planning defenses, experimenting with tower combinations, and replaying structured challenges. Apple lists it among the service’s top U.S. games for 2025. Confirm its current service status and device requirements before starting a long-term save.
Best sports game: NBA 2K25 Arcade Edition
NBA 2K25 Arcade Edition is the most straightforward choice for Apple Arcade subscribers seeking a conventional sports game. It is less compelling if you do not already use Arcade, particularly if you want the latest live-service features or roster updates associated with other versions.
Best family game: Sneaky Sasquatch
Sneaky Sasquatch offers exploration, humor, and low-pressure activities that can work for adults and children playing together. Apple included it in its 2025 Apple Arcade list. Check the current age rating and features for your child rather than treating any game as universally appropriate.
Best multiplayer options
Pokémon TCG Pocket is the better choice for card-game competition and short matches. Call of Duty: Mobile is better for traditional multiplayer and battle royale play, but it is more dependent on an internet connection and may be a heavier download.

Fortnite requires special care: iPhone availability, payment arrangements, and storefront rules vary by region. In 2025, its U.S. iOS availability and European Union distribution were subject to changing legal and marketplace circumstances. Check the current local App Store rather than relying on an old list. The Associated Press reported on those regional changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best Apple Arcade games
Apple describes Apple Arcade as a subscription service with hundreds of games and no advertisements or in-app purchases within the service. It can be accessed through the App Store or Games app, and Apple also offers it through Apple One. The catalog is not permanent: games can leave, and availability can differ by country, age rating, or account restrictions. Check Apple’s current Apple Arcade page before subscribing.
- Balatro+: best for serious solo replayability.
- Sneaky Sasquatch: best family-friendly all-rounder.
- Hello Kitty Island Adventure: best cozy exploration game.
- Bloons TD 6+: best tower-defense option.
- Stardew Valley+: best long-form farming and role-playing game.
- NBA 2K25 Arcade Edition: best conventional sports game.
Apple Arcade is the better deal when you expect to play several games, share access with family, or strongly dislike ads and in-app purchases. Buying individually is usually better when you intend to play one or two games for a long time and do not want access tied to a subscription. Before cancelling, check what happens to access and saves; do not assume an Arcade save will transfer to a standalone edition.
Premium games and console-quality ports
Premium iPhone games are usually easier to recommend to players tired of timers, battle passes, and repeated purchase prompts. Thronefall, Balatro, Stardew Valley, Dead Cells, and The Room games are good places to start.
For larger console-style experiences, consider Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, Alien: Isolation, and Hades—but treat them as hardware-dependent purchases, not universal recommendations. They may require newer iPhones, substantial storage, a recent iOS version, a controller, or a large download. Touch controls can also be less comfortable than a controller, and performance, heat, and battery use vary by model and software version. Verify every requirement on the current App Store page.
Touch controls, controllers, and offline play
Touchscreen quality should influence the recommendation as much as genre. Card games, puzzles, turn-based strategy, and portrait-oriented games generally adapt well. Fast action games and large console ports are more likely to benefit from a physical controller.
- Usually good with touch: Pokémon TCG Pocket, Balatro, Thronefall, Stardew Valley, Vampire Survivors, and puzzle adventures.
- Often better with a controller: Dead Cells, major action ports, racing games, and first-person shooters.
- Controller not necessary: games designed around tapping, dragging, cards, menus, or short turn-based decisions.
Controller support, button remapping, orientation, one-handed usability, and offline access must be checked game by game. A paid download is not proof that a game works completely offline: multiplayer, account authentication, subscriptions, updates, or additional assets may still require a connection.

How to choose by payment model
| Model | What it means | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free to download | No upfront payment | Trying a game before spending | Ads, energy systems, randomized rewards, battle passes, and competitive spending |
| Premium | One-time App Store purchase | Players who want a complete game | Separate DLC, edition differences, and compatibility limits |
| Apple Arcade | Access through an active subscription | Players who want a catalog without ads or in-game purchases | Catalog changes and loss of access after cancellation |
| Cloud or remote play | Streaming from another device or service | Players who already own compatible hardware or a cloud subscription | It is not the same as a native iPhone installation and depends heavily on connectivity |
Games that may not suit everyone
- Skip free-to-play games if ads, timers, randomized purchases, or battle passes undermine your enjoyment.
- Skip competitive games if you need offline access or do not want a steep learning curve.
- Skip major console ports if your iPhone has limited storage, is older, or you do not own a controller.
- Skip subscription editions if you want permanent access to one game after cancelling.
- Skip touch-first recommendations if you expect console-style precision and physical controls.
Availability also varies by country, prices vary by region and tax, and age restrictions can hide some Apple Arcade titles. The U.S. App Store is the scope for this guide; readers elsewhere should check their local storefront.
What to install first
Start with Pokémon TCG Pocket if you want the most mobile-focused, officially recognized choice. Pick Thronefall or Balatro for premium-feeling strategy, Stardew Valley for a game that can last for months, Dead Cells for demanding action, and Sneaky Sasquatch if you already subscribe to Apple Arcade and want a family-friendly adventure.
