Steam is the easiest default for Steam Deck owners because its store, library, updates, controls and Proton compatibility path are built into SteamOS. It is not a guarantee that every Steam game runs well. Choose GOG when DRM-free ownership matters, itch.io for Linux-native indie releases, Epic Games Store for recurring free offers when you accept extra setup, and Humble only after checking the exact bundle’s key, download and platform terms.
The important distinction is between a storefront and a launcher. Steam, GOG, Epic, itch.io and Humble sell or distribute games; Heroic and Lutris can help organize libraries from several stores but do not change a game’s files, anti-cheat support or redemption rules. Check the individual game, not just the store name.

Which game store works best on Steam Deck?
Steam is the best first stop for most Steam Deck owners. Valve designed the Deck software so buying, finding, installing and updating games happens inside the handheld interface, and SteamOS includes Proton for running many Windows builds. The integration removes the account, launcher and controller configuration work that can make another store feel like a project.
That convenience is about workflow, not universal compatibility. A Steam purchase can still be unsuitable because of an unsupported anti-cheat system, a launcher that does not cooperate with Proton, unreadable text, awkward controls or a display mode that does not translate well to the Deck. Use the store’s game-level information before paying.

Valve describes the Deck software and its integrated buying and library experience at Steam Deck software. The same page explains the Proton-based route used by SteamOS for Windows games.
How do Steam Deck compatibility labels work?
Valve’s Deck Verified system assigns each checked title one of four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown. These are per-game assessments, not a percentage rating for the store.
- Verified: Valve says, “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” The label covers the reviewed experience, including controls, display, launcher behavior, Proton compatibility and anti-cheat considerations.
- Playable: The game can work, but may require a manual setting, an on-screen keyboard, a community control layout, a magnifier or another adjustment.
- Unsupported: Valve has identified a significant Deck problem. That does not necessarily mean the title can never run, but it is a warning against assuming a normal purchase-and-play experience.
- Unknown: The game has not yet received a Deck review in Valve’s system. Unknown is an absence of a rating, not a claim that the game fails.
Ratings can change after a game, launcher, Proton version or anti-cheat component is updated. A green label is therefore useful evidence about the current reviewed state, not a permanent performance promise.
What refund protection does Steam provide?
Valve’s standard Steam-store game-refund threshold is a request within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours played, subject to the full policy’s qualifications and any additional local consumer rights. Treat those limits as a route to request a refund, not as a guarantee that every request succeeds.
The route matters: a game bought directly from Steam is handled through Steam’s refund system. A key bought from a third-party seller is not automatically covered by the same process, so retain the seller’s terms and redemption information.
Is GOG the best choice for DRM-free Linux games?
GOG is the clearest choice when DRM-free ownership is your priority and the specific game has a Linux build. GOG’s official description emphasizes games that do not impose the company’s preferred form of control; its About page says, “We don’t believe in controlling you and your games.” The catalog also includes Linux listings, particularly among older and classic titles.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not confuse a Linux game listing with a native Linux version of GOG’s desktop client. GOG’s current GALAXY page offers downloads for Windows and Mac. Linux users can instead download the files supplied for a particular game or use a separate Linux launcher such as Heroic to manage the GOG library.

Start with GOG’s official About page and then open the individual game’s system requirements. A title may provide a Linux build, a Windows build that relies on Wine or Proton, or only a Windows installer. Those are materially different ownership and troubleshooting experiences.
What are the trade-offs of GOG on a Deck?
- Advantages: DRM-free installers can be archived, and a game does not need to authenticate through a store client every time you launch it.
- Deck cost: You must bring the installer or library into a Deck-friendly workflow. The absence of a native Linux GALAXY client means more setup than Steam’s integrated path.
- Compatibility: A Linux build is not automatically Deck-ready. Check controller mappings, text size, resolution behavior and any separate launcher or copy-protection component.
- Refunds: GOG’s About page advertises full refunds within 30 days. Read the detailed, current terms for the purchase and delivery method rather than treating the marketing summary as every possible exception.
Can I play my Epic games on Linux?
Often, but not simply because Epic lists or gives away the game. Epic advertises a weekly free-game offer on its free games page. On Linux and Steam Deck, a launcher such as Heroic can sign in to an Epic account, install games and use Wine or Proton. That adds a layer between the Epic account and the game, so the result depends on the individual title.
Epic’s free offer is a store promotion, not a Linux compatibility label. A game can be free to claim yet fail to launch on a Deck because its anti-cheat service does not support the required compatibility environment, because its launcher requires an interaction that does not work with a controller, or because its graphics and input assumptions do not fit the handheld.

- Read the game’s own system requirements and note whether Epic lists a native Linux build. If it lists only Windows, plan on Wine or Proton rather than native execution.
- Search for the title’s Deck or Linux compatibility information separately. Do not transfer a Steam rating to an Epic copy; the launcher, executable and configuration can differ.
- Check anti-cheat notes. Heroic’s support for Wine and Proton cannot override a game’s server-side or kernel-level anti-cheat requirement.
- Confirm that the account can be used through the chosen launcher and that you understand where saves, updates and add-ons are managed.
- Claim a free title only if you are comfortable with the possibility that it will remain unplayable on your device until a game or compatibility update changes the situation.
Heroic is a management route, not an official Epic Linux build and not a substitute for the game’s own support policy.
Are itch.io games Steam Deck compatible?
Some are excellent Deck candidates, especially Linux-native indie games, but compatibility is decided release by release. itch.io provides a Linux catalog filter, making it easier to find creators who upload a Linux build. Its optional app also has a Linux download and can manage game downloads and updates.
The filter tells you that a creator supplied Linux files; it does not certify controller support, a 1280-by-800-friendly interface, suspend-and-resume behavior or a smooth installation on SteamOS. A tiny experimental game may launch perfectly with a keyboard and mouse while being impractical on a handheld.
What should you inspect on an itch.io game page?
- Files: Look for a Linux archive or executable and read whether it targets a particular architecture or distribution.
- Controls: Check for gamepad support, remapping instructions and any first-launch keyboard requirement.
- Display: Look for windowed-mode, scaling and text-size notes. A game that assumes a fixed desktop resolution may need manual adjustments.
- Installation: Note whether the creator provides a standalone folder, an installer, a script or a browser-based build.
- Updates: See how the creator publishes patches and whether the itch app can manage that release.
Heroic lists itch.io integration as planned rather than as a current feature. For now, use the creator’s download instructions or the itch app, and keep the game page’s specific requirements with your files.

Will a Humble bundle give me a Steam key?
There is no sitewide answer: inspect the exact Humble offer before purchasing. A current bundle or individual deal may provide a Steam key, another redemption format, a direct download, or a mixture. The available evidence does not establish one delivery rule for every Humble product.
Lutris documents that its Linux client can connect to Humble, GOG and Steam libraries. That connection helps organize games you already own; it does not prove that a particular Humble purchase includes a Steam key or a Linux build. Heroic lists Humble integration as planned, not present.
Humble purchase checklist
- Open the offer’s redemption section and identify the exact destination: Steam, another account, a direct installer or a combination.
- Check whether the key is restricted by region, edition, platform or activation date.
- Look for Linux files in the offer or on each included game’s page. A Steam key does not itself establish native Linux support.
- Read the instructions for revealing, redeeming and replacing a key. Keep the receipt and redemption details.
- Only then decide whether the deal fits your Deck library. If the format is unclear, treat the offer as unverified rather than assuming Steam compatibility.
What are Heroic and Lutris, and why are they not storefronts?
Heroic and Lutris are library and launch tools, not replacement stores. They can sign in to supported accounts, download or locate games and apply Wine or Proton configurations, but the underlying purchase still belongs to the original storefront.
Heroic Games Launcher
Heroic can manage Epic and GOG libraries on Linux and Steam Deck, and its Wine/Proton options provide a practical route for games that do not have a native Linux build. It cannot make a title’s anti-cheat compatible, create a Linux version that the publisher never shipped or transfer a Deck rating from one store to another. Its publisher presents Discover as the SteamOS installation route.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Lutris
Lutris is a Linux library manager and launcher. Its documented connections to Humble, GOG and Steam can put games from different accounts in one interface, but each game’s installer, license, update path and compatibility behavior remain tied to the source store.
How should Linux and Deck buyers compare storefronts?
The best storefront depends on which kind of friction you are willing to accept. Use these comparison axes before choosing where to spend money.
1. Native Linux build versus Windows compatibility
A native Linux build avoids a translation layer, but it may not receive the same patches, graphics features or controller work as a Windows release. A Windows build through Proton or Wine can work very well, yet it adds dependencies and may break after a launcher, game or anti-cheat update. Record which build you are actually buying.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
2. Game-specific anti-cheat
Anti-cheat is one of the most important exceptions to otherwise successful Proton compatibility. A storefront’s Linux filter, a launcher integration and a Steam Deck label cannot override a game’s own server requirements. Multiplayer buyers should check the title’s current anti-cheat status before relying on a purchase.
3. Deck controls and display
Deck suitability includes more than whether the executable opens. Look for controller recognition, readable menus, text scaling, correct aspect-ratio behavior and a way to reach launchers or account prompts without a physical keyboard.
4. Launcher overhead
Steam keeps shopping, downloading and launching in one Deck-focused interface. GOG without a Linux GALAXY client, Epic through Heroic and Humble through a library manager each add setup or account steps. Decide whether DRM-free files or a low-maintenance interface is more valuable for the particular game.
5. DRM and offline ownership
GOG’s positioning is strongest for buyers who want DRM-free installers. Steam, Epic and Humble may deliver a key or account entitlement instead. Compare the actual files and activation requirements, not just the storefront’s reputation.
6. Refund path
Direct purchases have the store’s own refund rules. A key redeemed through another service can move the support and refund question to that service, so do not assume Steam’s two-week and two-hour thresholds apply to a separately purchased key.
7. Redemption destination
For bundles and promotions, the redemption destination is a purchasing fact. A low price is less useful if the key lands in an account you do not use, is region-locked or supplies a version without the Linux files you need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which storefront should you choose for each situation?
- You want the least Deck setup: Start with Steam and use the game’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown status as an initial filter.
- You want DRM-free archives: Check GOG’s Linux listings and the game’s own installer requirements. Use a separate Linux launcher if you need library management.
- You mainly play small Linux indies: Browse itch.io’s Linux catalog, then inspect each creator’s files and control notes.
- You collect weekly freebies: Claim Epic offers if you accept that Linux and Deck play may require Heroic and may be blocked by anti-cheat.
- You shop bundles: Use Humble deal by deal. Confirm the key platform, direct-download files, region and redemption destination before checkout.

- Identify the storefront copy. Write down whether you are buying directly from Steam, a GOG installer, an Epic entitlement, an itch.io upload or a Humble redemption. Copies from different stores can use different launchers and files.
- Find the platform declaration. Look for a native Linux download first. If there is none, identify the Windows build and the compatibility layer you would need.
- Check Deck evidence. For Steam, read Valve’s current category and any notes. For other stores, do not infer a rating from a Steam listing.
- Investigate anti-cheat and launchers. Multiplayer requirements and account prompts are common reasons a game behaves differently from a simple single-player Proton title.
- Verify controls and display. Make sure the game supports a controller or has a workable remapping path, and check text and resolution requirements.
- Confirm the refund route. Save the store’s policy and the purchase receipt, especially when a bundle supplies a third-party key.
- Plan storage. Steam Deck hardware supports a UHS-I microSDXC slot, so a compatible card can expand the library. This is a storage specification, not a guarantee of a particular card’s speed or game performance.
What should you know about Steam Deck storage for a larger library?
Valve specifies support for UHS-I microSDXC cards in the Steam Deck. That makes expandable storage relevant when a storefront choice leads to a large local library, but the specification does not identify a specific card or establish a benchmark. Check the card’s capacity, warranty and compatibility separately, and do not treat storage expansion as evidence that a game will run.
A Steam Deck-compatible USB-C dock can add an external display and peripherals, but no particular dock has been tested or endorsed here. Dock choice affects desk use, not which storefront owns or launches a game.

How we picked these storefronts
The ranking weighs the evidence that matters to Linux and Deck buyers: how directly the store fits the Deck interface, whether it offers native Linux files, the amount of Proton or Wine setup, game-specific anti-cheat risk, controller and display considerations, DRM preference, refund clarity and the certainty of the redemption destination. Steam ranks first for integrated Deck workflow; GOG, itch.io, Epic and Humble follow for distinct use cases rather than a universal compatibility score.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Steam Deck Verified label apply to an Epic or GOG copy of the same game?
No. The label describes the version Valve reviewed in Steam’s environment. A copy from another storefront can use a different executable, launcher, build or account flow, so evaluate that copy separately.
What does Unknown mean on a Steam Deck game listing?
Unknown means Valve has not yet assigned one of its four Deck categories to that title. It is not a prediction that the game is broken; it tells you to seek other evidence before buying.
Can a Linux-native game still be awkward on a Steam Deck?
Yes. Native Linux support says where the program runs, not whether its menus, text, controls or fixed-resolution assumptions suit a handheld. Read the creator’s control and display notes for the individual release.

No. Heroic supplies a Linux launcher and Wine/Proton integration for supported accounts. The game’s publisher still controls its Linux files, launcher behavior and anti-cheat requirements.
Why should I check a Humble offer’s redemption instructions before buying?
Humble products do not share one guaranteed delivery format. The exact offer may send you to Steam, provide another key or include direct files, and those choices determine your Linux installation and refund path.
