Best Mercenary Build in Path of Exile 2: Skills, Ascendancy & Items (Patch 0.5.5)

Patch 0.5.5 has several Mercenary build directions, not a proven universal winner. Compare Gemling Legionnaire grenade and Twister guides with Witchhunter Frostbolt by playstyle and progression stage.

There is no proven universal best Mercenary build in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5. If you want a current starting point and enjoy explosive combat, compare the Gemling Legionnaire grenade guides first. Twister Gemling Legionnaire and Witchhunter Frostbolt are other current options, and may suit you better depending on the combat loop and progression stage you want. These are recommendations based on the current guide listings—not a tested ranking of damage, defense, or cost.

Current Mercenary builds to compare

The current patch 0.5.5 Mercenary index lists several different approaches. It includes a Flameblast Oil Grenade build and a Grenades Gemling Legionnaire league starter, Twister Gemling Legionnaire guides, and a Witchhunter Frostbolt build. Their presence in an index does not establish which one clears faster, survives better, or costs less.

Build direction Ascendancy Progression label or guide update
Flameblast Oil Grenade Gemling Legionnaire Guide updated September 12, 2026
Grenades Gemling Legionnaire League starter; guide updated September 22, 2026
Twister Gemling Legionnaire Guides updated September 30 and October 4, 2026
Frostbolt Witchhunter Guide updated October 4, 2026

The dates and labels come from the index, which was crawled October 8, 2026. They identify available guides, not comparative performance. For a full recommendation, open the guide itself and check that its skills, passive choices, and item advice match your patch and league.

Choose by the way you want to play

  • Grenades: A strong direction to investigate if you like explosive attacks. The listed Gemling guides include both an explicitly labeled league starter and a Flameblast Oil Grenade build.
  • Twister: A current Gemling option if that skill-based approach appeals more than grenades.
  • Frostbolt: A current Witchhunter option if you would rather follow a Frostbolt guide than a Gemling grenade setup.

How to decide which build is best for you

Before committing to a guide, compare the details that affect your actual goal. The index alone does not answer them.

  • Progression: Is the guide intended for leveling and a league start, or does it assume an established endgame character?
  • Combat loop: Do you want to use grenades, Twister, or Frostbolt, and does the guide explain how its skills work together?
  • Damage: Does it address both clearing groups and handling rares and bosses, rather than presenting one as proof of the other?
  • Defense and execution: Check what defensive layers it uses and whether the rotation, timing, or positioning suits you.
  • Cost and availability: Verify the required items against the current league economy. An endgame setup may not be practical as a starter.

Without comparable evidence on those points, build-list order, favorites, or the number of guides cannot establish an objective winner.

Mercenary class and ascendancies

Mercenary is a Strength/Dexterity class. Patch 0.5.5 game-data listings identify its starting equipment and skill as the Makeshift Crossbow and Fragmentation Rounds, and list three ascendancies:

  • Gemling Legionnaire
  • Witchhunter
  • Tactician

These class details are from ExileDB, a fan-maintained database that says its data is checked against Path of Exile 2 game files for patch 0.5.5, client build 4.5.5.4; it is not an official GGG page. The current build index identifies Gemling Legionnaire and Witchhunter builds, but the listings cited here do not establish a suitable current Tactician guide or a reason to rank one ascendancy above the others.

Skills and gear: what an older Grenadier guide can—and cannot—tell you

A Witchhunter Grenadier guide from PC Gamer, last updated January 7, 2025, illustrates one way to build around skill synergy: use Explosive Grenade, then Explosive Shot to detonate it and reduce the wait imposed by grenade fuses. It recommends Witchhunter and highlights No Mercy and Zealous Inquisition, with Judge, Jury, and Executioner as an alternate damage path.

Its gear priorities include added or increased physical damage on a crossbow; armour, evasion, and resistances on body armour, gloves, and boots; movement speed on boots; and resistances or fire damage on rings. Treat these as historical examples, not verified patch 0.5.5 instructions. Before using any of its specific skill links, passive nodes, or modifier values, check them against current game data and a current guide.

Patch and guide freshness

The current guide listings cited here were crawled October 8, 2026, with updates through October 4, and the class data is labeled patch 0.5.5. Builds can change with patches and league economies, so confirm that a guide has been updated for the version you are playing before following its setup.

GGG’s patch 0.2.0 notes document historical changes that introduced Tactician and changed Witchhunter’s No Mercy. Those notes do not establish the current values or balance of either ascendancy in patch 0.5.5.
