For installing several large games, start with a reputable 1TB UHS-I microSDXC card marked U3 and A2. Samsung PRO Plus 1TB is the best-documented default in the available specifications; Samsung EVO Select 1TB is a closely related documented alternative. Choose a verified 2TB listing such as Lexar PLAY 2TB only when capacity matters more than certainty about the exact revision and seller. Both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models support UHS-I microSD cards, so UHS-II or UHS-III will not deliver their higher bus speeds in the Deck.
The cards below are ranked by documented suitability, capacity choice and shopping confidence—not by a same-Deck benchmark. Samsung’s direct US 1TB listings showed out of stock when checked in October 2026, so confirm current stock, seller, model number and warranty before buying.

How much microSD capacity does a Steam Deck need?
Choose capacity around the size of the library you keep installed, not a promised game count. Installation sizes vary widely, updates consume additional space, and the Deck retains its internal storage for games, shader caches and the operating system.

512GB: a rotating library
A 512GB card suits players who move through a few large games at a time or use the internal SSD for favorites. Samsung’s Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus is documented in a 512GB capacity, with UHS-I, U3, V30 and A2 markings. Themed artwork does not make it faster; buy it only when the capacity and listing terms fit your budget.
1TB: the practical starting point
For several large games installed simultaneously, 1TB is the sensible baseline. Samsung PRO Plus 1TB and EVO Select 1TB have manufacturer-documented performance classes and warranties, making their specifications easier to verify than an unfamiliar listing. A formatted card shows less usable space than its decimal capacity, and no fixed number of games can be inferred from “1TB.”

A verified 2TB card can reduce uninstalling, but check the exact model and seller carefully. An October 14, 2026 listing-based comparison identified Lexar PLAY 2TB as a UHS-I/A2 candidate; that evidence does not establish a fastest-card result or a universal Steam Deck advantage. Confirm the card’s speed markings, warranty, return policy and current stock before purchase.
What microSD standard does the Steam Deck support?
Valve specifies UHS-I microSD support for both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models. Valve’s support guidance says UHS-I Class 3 or better cards are supported; UHS-II and UHS-III cards may function, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer rates.
That ceiling changes how to spend money. A UHS-II card inserted into the Deck is still operating through a UHS-I host, so its headline interface speed cannot be realized there. UHS-I, U3 and A2 markings are more useful shopping signals for this device than a premium UHS-II label.
What does the UHS-I bus number mean?
Samsung’s 2025 Sonic PRO Plus data sheet states up to 104 MB/s for the UHS-I SDR104 bus mode. This is a bus-mode specification, not an independently measured Steam Deck throughput. The host, card, reader, file pattern and software all affect actual transfers.

Which microSD cards are the strongest choices?
1. Samsung PRO Plus 1TB — best-documented default
Samsung’s data sheet lists UHS-I, U3, V30 and A2 for the PRO Plus 1TB, with up to 180 MB/s sequential read and 130 MB/s sequential write under the manufacturer’s specified reader and test conditions. It also lists a limited 10-year warranty. Those numbers describe the card in a controlled setup; they are not Steam Deck install speeds.
This is the easiest default to compare because the interface, classes and warranty are explicit. Samsung’s US direct 1TB adapter listing was out of stock when checked in October 2026. Search the complete model and capacity at a reputable retailer, and verify that the listing is for the current PRO Plus revision rather than a similarly named older card.
2. Samsung EVO Select 1TB — documented alternative
Samsung’s July 2024 announcement describes the EVO Select 1TB as U3/V30/A2 and advertises up to 160 MB/s read, with a limited 10-year warranty. The direct 1TB listing was also out of stock when checked in October 2026. A 2024 launch MSRP is not a 2026 street price, so compare the live retailer price, seller and warranty terms against the PRO Plus.
For a Deck-only library, both cards present the classes that matter on the UHS-I slot. The documented read-rate difference should not be translated into a guaranteed difference in game loading without independent, same-Deck measurements.
3. Samsung Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus 512GB or 1TB — themed alternative
Samsung’s 2025 data sheet confirms 512GB and 1TB Sonic PRO Plus capacities with UHS-I, U3, V30 and A2 markings and a limited 10-year warranty. Samsung identifies Sonic and Shadow designs for the themed range. The card’s design is cosmetic, not a performance category, and a launch promotion described in Samsung’s 2025 announcement should not be treated as an ongoing discount.
Choose this line when the artwork matters or when a verified listing is better than a comparable standard card. Capacity, seller and current terms still take priority over the character print.

4. Lexar PLAY 2TB — capacity-first candidate
The October 2026 listing-based comparison identifies a 2TB Lexar PLAY UHS-I/A2 card. Because the evidence is listing-based rather than practical testing, inspect the exact product page for U3 or V30 markings, the model code, warranty coverage and seller identity. Do not assume that every PLAY revision has identical specifications.
Its appeal is simple: more room for a large library. Its trade-off is greater verification work and less independently established detail in the available documentation. Treat it as a capacity option, not as a measured speed winner.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOther comparison paths
The same recent comparison lists Lexar PLAY 1TB and SanDisk Extreme 1TB as alternatives. Their exact current model-level markings and warranty were not independently established in manufacturer documentation here, so avoid assigning them a benchmark rank or importing specifications from another revision. If you consider either, read the current listing line by line and retain the receipt for a return if the delivered card differs.
What do U3, V30 and A2 mean for Steam Deck use?
These labels describe different properties. They help screen out unsuitable cards, but none is a Valve promise of a particular game’s load time.
| Marking | What it describes | How to use it when shopping |
|---|---|---|
| U3 | UHS Speed Class for a minimum sustained write level | Use it as a baseline class for a game-storage card; it is not a measured install speed. |
| V30 | Video Speed Class with a 30 MB/s sustained video-capture rate | Helpful evidence of a sustained-write class, but video capture is not game loading. |
| A2 | Application Performance Class; Samsung’s 2025 data sheet explains minimums of 4,000 random-read IOPS and 2,000 random-write IOPS | A useful random-access distinction. It is not a Valve requirement and does not prove a particular title will load faster. |
| UHS-I | The bus interface supported by the Deck | Match the host interface first; paying for UHS-II/III does not unlock those rates in the Deck. |
Samsung also states up to 180 MB/s sequential read and 130 MB/s sequential write for the Sonic PRO Plus under controlled conditions with a specified Samsung reader. Actual performance depends on the host and conditions. Those figures should never be presented as measured Steam Deck results.
Does a faster microSD card make Steam Deck games load faster?
A card with stronger specifications can reduce transfer bottlenecks in some workloads, but the available evidence does not establish an independent, same-Deck installation-time or game-load comparison among these candidates. The Deck’s UHS-I interface, game file pattern, CPU decompression, patches and shader processing all influence what you see.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Use manufacturer figures to confirm compatibility and class, not to promise a percentage improvement. A2’s random-IOPS minimums are especially easy to misread: they define a classification threshold, not the result of launching a named game. If a seller advertises a “fastest for Steam Deck” claim, ask whether it specifies the Deck model, SteamOS version, game, test method and repeatable measurements.
How do you format a microSD card in SteamOS?
Back up any files on the card first. Formatting erases the card, and Valve says Steam Deck formatting uses ext4 with casefolding so the device can use the proper Linux filesystem.
- Insert the microSD card into the Deck’s slot while the system is on or powered down safely.
- Open Steam, then choose Settings.
- Select System and scroll to the storage section.
- Choose Format SD Card and read the erase warning.
- Confirm the format and wait for SteamOS to finish. Do not remove the card or interrupt power during the process.
- Afterward, open the Storage manager and set the microSD card as the default install location if you want new games to go there. You can still select the internal drive for individual installations.
Valve’s official FAQ describes the result as ext4 with casefolding. A card formatted for a camera or Windows computer may therefore need to be reformatted before SteamOS can use it as game storage.
Do you need a USB microSD reader?
No. The Deck can format and manage a card through its built-in slot, so a reader is optional. Buy one only if you routinely copy large files between a computer and the card or need to make a backup without using the Deck.
Readers matter when interpreting advertised peak speeds. Samsung’s maximum figures were obtained with specified reader conditions; a slower USB port, hub or reader can become the limiting factor. A reader cannot make the Deck’s internal UHS-I slot operate as UHS-II.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you verify before ordering?
- Exact capacity and model: Match the model code and capacity in the seller’s title, specifications and photographs. Similar names can hide different revisions.
- UHS-I interface: Confirm the card is suitable for the Deck’s host rather than paying extra for an interface the Deck cannot use at its higher rate.
- Class markings: U3 and A2 are sensible targets; V30 is a sustained-write class, not a game benchmark.
- Seller and returns: Use a reputable seller, inspect the packaging and retain proof of purchase. Memory-card counterfeits and mislabelled capacities make seller verification important.
- Warranty: Read whether the limited warranty is 10 years, another period or absent, and note any regional restrictions.
- Current stock and price: Samsung’s direct US 1TB listings were out of stock when checked in October 2026. Availability elsewhere can differ, so check the live listing immediately before purchase.
- Other devices: If the card will also be used in a camera, tablet or handheld, confirm that device’s filesystem and speed requirements before formatting it for SteamOS.
How we picked these cards
The ranking weighs documented UHS-I compatibility, U3/V30/A2 class information, capacity choices, warranty clarity, seller and stock uncertainty, and whether the card can serve a Deck library without relying on unverified benchmark claims. Manufacturer maximums are treated as conditional specifications. Listing-based candidates are labelled as such, and no card is called a measured fastest option because independent same-Deck results are not established.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a 1TB microSD card in both an LCD and OLED Steam Deck?
Yes. Valve specifies microSD expansion for all Steam Deck models, and both LCD and OLED versions use a UHS-I slot. The card must be formatted for SteamOS, so back up data before moving it between devices.
Will Steam Deck recognize a card formatted as exFAT?
SteamOS game storage is formatted by the Deck as ext4 with casefolding. An exFAT card may hold ordinary files, but use the Deck’s Format SD Card function for reliable game-library storage and expect that process to erase existing contents.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a 2TB card safe for Steam Deck game installs?
Capacity alone does not determine compatibility; the card still needs a trustworthy listing and a supported UHS-I interface. For a 2TB candidate, verify the exact model, seller, warranty and current SteamOS behavior, because listing-based evidence does not establish every revision.
Why is the usable space smaller than the number printed on the card?
Manufacturers label capacity in decimal bytes, while the filesystem reserves space for formatting and metadata. SteamOS also needs room for its filesystem structures, so the available figure shown in Storage will be lower than the advertised decimal capacity.
Can a USB reader speed up installing games to the Deck’s microSD card?
A reader can speed computer-to-card copying only when the computer, USB port and reader support the card’s capabilities. It does not raise the Deck’s built-in slot beyond its UHS-I ceiling, and Steam’s normal downloads still write through the Deck itself.
