Best Minecraft Video, Performance, and Keybind Settings for Turn-Based Combat Mods

The best setup is a stable baseline, not a magic FPS preset: leave Sodium’s supported optimizations enabled, keep a frame-time target your computer can sustain, and lower render, simulation, entity distance and effects only when you can reproduce a hitch. Keep vanilla movement and inventory controls intact, then place attack, target, confirm and cancel actions on nearby, conflict-free keys. TurnBasedMinecraftMod also depends on its entity and server configuration, so an unexpected combatant or battle transition may be a configuration issue rather than a graphics problem.

What this setup is designed to solve

TurnBasedMinecraftMod adds an RPG-style battle flow to Minecraft. Battles introduce a menu, an entity-selection interface and turn transitions that do not occur during ordinary exploration. Those transitions can expose frame-time spikes even when your average frame rate looks acceptable. The practical goal is therefore consistent frame delivery and readable combat information, not the largest FPS number shown by an overlay.

The mod’s participation rules matter as much as video options. Its server configuration can add entities from other mods, and the in-game /tbm-edit and /tbm-server-edit commands can change entries. If one world produces unusually crowded encounters, inspect those entries before rebuilding your graphics profile. A setting that works in a small encounter may fail when several configured entities, particles and status effects appear at once.

There is no independently published FPS, latency or frame-time number that applies to every combination of Minecraft version, loader, Sodium build, TurnBasedMinecraftMod release and hardware. Treat the recommendations below as a controlled tuning method. Record a working baseline, change one category at a time and keep every change reversible.

Verify the version and loader before changing anything

TurnBasedMinecraftMod currently lists Minecraft 1.21.8 Forge and NeoForge files on its CurseForge page. Your installed file, loader and Minecraft version must match; a preset copied from another build can expose different controls or fail before a battle starts.

  • Confirm the Minecraft Java Edition version shown by your launcher.
  • Confirm whether the instance uses Forge or NeoForge.
  • Check the exact TurnBasedMinecraftMod file and the Sodium build installed in that instance.
  • After adding or updating a mod, open the Controls screen and search for the mod’s action names rather than assuming an older key map still exists.
  • Back up the instance or at least the .minecraft/config directory before editing configuration files.

Java mods are third-party software. Minecraft Support states that modding is not officially supported and that it cannot assist with failures arising from mod use. Keep a clean, unmodded test profile available so you can distinguish a game installation problem from a modpack problem.

Start with Sodium’s defaults

Sodium enables the optimizations supported by your system by default. That makes its default profile the most useful control condition: you know which change caused an improvement or a regression. Do not disable visual features pre-emptively or import a generic “maximum FPS” preset before you have observed a reproducible issue.

Open the video settings and note the current values in the General, Performance and Advanced categories. Capture a screenshot or write them down. Then reproduce the same action several times: walk into a likely encounter, rotate the camera, open the battle menu, cycle targets and confirm an action. A single random hitch is not enough evidence to justify a large settings change.

Use a frame-rate cap or adaptive-sync configuration that your hardware can hold during the busiest part of a battle. A lower, steady cap generally feels better than an uncapped rate that repeatedly falls when entities enter combat. Because hardware and displays differ, this guide does not prescribe a universal FPS number.

Video settings: tune the expensive features in the right order

Setting area First adjustment What to watch for Trade-off
Render distance Reduce it modestly when camera movement or the transition into a battle hitches. Whether encounter terrain and nearby entities remain visible before combat begins. Lower horizon detail and less distant scenery.
Simulation distance Reduce it with render distance rather than changing only one of them. Whether the same transition remains smooth when mobs and world logic activate. Fewer distant chunks receive active simulation.
Entity distance Lower it if many combatants or nameplates cause spikes. Target visibility and whether the selected combatant remains easy to identify. Entities disappear sooner at the edge of the view.
Particles and effects Reduce particles, weather and other effects when combat text or target highlights become cluttered. Turn order, selected-target feedback and action results. Less visual feedback and atmosphere.
Clouds Lower or disable them only after distance settings are tested. Whether the battle area is easier to read without a background layer. Reduced sky detail.
Shaders Disable them while isolating a hitch. Whether the spike disappears with the shader pipeline removed. Loss of shader lighting and effects; re-enable after testing if stable.

Render and simulation distance

Change render and simulation distance as a pair. Render distance controls what is drawn; simulation distance controls how far active world logic runs. A battle transition can stress both, especially when a new area becomes visible while entities begin ticking. Lowering only render distance can leave simulation work untouched, while lowering only simulation distance can make the world feel inconsistent around an encounter.

Use the smallest reduction that removes the hitch while preserving the terrain and approach path you need to read. If you cannot tell whether a spike occurs during chunk loading or battle logic, test the same route in an empty area and then near a configured encounter. Different results point to different causes.

Entity distance, particles and weather

Entity distance is particularly relevant to this mod because the battle menu must still communicate who is participating. Reduce it gradually and verify that every intended combatant remains visible when you enter the selection screen. If targets vanish or become difficult to distinguish, restore the previous value and reduce particles, weather or clouds instead.

Particles can obscure target highlights, turn-order indicators and combat text even when they are not the largest source of rendering cost. A moderate reduction often improves both readability and frame-time consistency. Keep enough effects to identify an attack result; an entirely empty scene can hide the visual feedback you need to confirm that an action succeeded.

Frame pacing and synchronization

Choose a cap that your system can sustain while several entities are active. Test with the same camera movement and menu confirmations after every change. If your display supports adaptive synchronization, use it according to the display and driver instructions, then avoid stacking multiple competing caps unless you know which one is authoritative. The useful result is a stable cadence during input, not a high idle reading in an empty world.

Shaders, overlays and known conflict checks

Disable shaders and performance-monitoring overlays while troubleshooting. Overlays can add their own hooks and frame-time work, making it impossible to tell whether the game or the monitor is responsible for a hitch. Once the baseline is stable, re-enable one overlay or shader at a time and repeat the same encounter test.

Sodium documents severe compatibility issues with some versions of RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) and ASUS GPU Tweak III. If the game freezes, renders a black or corrupted frame, or stutters only when an overlay is active, close those tools completely, restart the game and test again. Updating or removing a mod should not be your first response until these external hooks have been ruled out.

Keybind layout for attack, target, confirm and cancel

There is no universal TurnBasedMinecraftMod key map established across all releases. Action names and defaults can vary by version, so use the Controls screen in the installed instance as the authority. The layout below is a reachability plan, not a claim about default keys.

Action Placement principle Why it works Validation
Primary attack or action Use a reachable key beside the movement cluster. Lets you act without moving your hand far from movement controls. Press it repeatedly while moving the cursor through the battle menu; check for conflicts.
Target cycle Use nearby keys or the mouse wheel, whichever is comfortable. Allows quick changes without crossing the keyboard. Cycle through every available combatant and verify the highlight changes each time.
Confirm or select Use the same key you already associate with menu selection. Reduces hesitation when the menu asks for an action, target or confirmation. Confirm an action, a target and any follow-up prompt.
Cancel or back Keep Escape or another clearly separate key. Prevents accidental cancellation while cycling targets or selecting an attack. Back out of each menu level without triggering an attack.

Preserve the vanilla movement cluster

Leave movement, inventory and sneak on their familiar keys unless you have a specific accessibility reason to change them. Turn-based menus pause the urgency of real-time combat, but you still need to move into an encounter, reposition the camera and open inventory outside battle. A wholesale remap creates more opportunities for conflicts than it solves.

Audit conflicts after every mod update

  1. Open the in-game Options menu.
  2. Select Controls.
  3. Search for the exact action name supplied by the current TurnBasedMinecraftMod build.
  4. Assign the planned key, then inspect the conflict indicator before leaving the screen.
  5. Search for the same key to find duplicate assignments in other mods.
  6. Enter a test battle and perform attack, target cycling, confirmation and cancellation in that order.

If an action does not appear, the installed build may use a different name, the mod may not have loaded, or the current screen may be filtering categories. Confirm the loader and mod version before editing configuration files.

TurnBasedMinecraftMod configuration can look like a performance bug

The mod creates a commented .minecraft/config/TurnBasedMinecraft/TBM_Config.toml. Comments explain the available entries and make the file a safer place to understand what the instance is configured to do than an undocumented manual edit. Server configuration can add entities from other mods, and the commands /tbm-edit and /tbm-server-edit provide in-game editing paths.

  • access new mini games and game modes through servers

Inspect configuration when the symptom is selective: one world, one server or one type of encounter causes the spike while ordinary exploration remains smooth. Check which entities are enabled, whether a server has added additional entries and whether a recent change increased the number of simultaneous participants. Keep a backup before modifying the file, and make one change at a time so you can identify the cause.

Configuration checks

  • Compare a quiet encounter with the crowded encounter that hitches.
  • List the entities participating in each case.
  • Check both local and server-side entries; a client-only edit may not override server rules.
  • After an edit, restart or reload as required by the current build, then reproduce the same battle.
  • Restore the backup if the menu no longer opens or entities stop appearing correctly.

A repeatable troubleshooting sequence

Use this order so that each test answers a specific question.

  1. Reproduce: Record the location, entities, camera movement and menu action that trigger the hitch. Avoid relying on an overlay’s average FPS alone.
  2. Return to baseline: Restore Sodium’s defaults, your recorded frame cap and the original keybinds. Close shaders and overlays.
  3. Separate the scene: Test an empty area, a normal encounter and the problematic encounter. If only one encounter fails, inspect mod configuration.
  4. Reduce distances together: Lower render and simulation distance modestly and repeat the same route.
  5. Reduce visual load: Adjust entity distance, particles, weather and clouds while checking target readability.
  6. Check external hooks: Test with RTSS and ASUS GPU Tweak III closed, then add tools back individually.
  7. Test input: Use the Controls screen to remove duplicate bindings and verify the complete attack-target-confirm-cancel sequence.
  8. Check versions: Confirm Minecraft, Forge or NeoForge, TurnBasedMinecraftMod and Sodium versions before replacing files.
  9. Isolate the pack: Create a temporary profile with only the loader, the combat mod and Sodium. Add other mods back in groups if the minimal profile is stable.

Stop changing video settings when the symptom is clearly an input conflict, a malformed configuration entry or a loader mismatch. More aggressive graphics reductions cannot repair a battle action that is bound twice or a server rule that adds unintended entities.

Three practical profiles

Profile Use it when Settings approach Keybind approach
Readability first You can maintain a stable frame cadence but need clear turn order and target feedback. Keep distance values at the baseline; reduce cluttering particles or weather only when they obscure combat information. Place target cycling and confirm on the easiest nearby keys; keep cancel separate.
Consistency first Camera movement or battle transitions hitch with several entities. Reduce render and simulation distance together, then entity distance and effects; use a sustainable cap; test without shaders and overlays. Keep the four battle actions close to the movement cluster and remove duplicate bindings.
Diagnosis You cannot tell whether the problem is the mod, the pack or an external tool. Use Sodium defaults, no shaders, no overlays and a recorded cap; test a minimal profile before making permanent changes. Restore vanilla controls, then add only the mod actions and test each one.

How to judge a successful change

Evaluate every preset on three axes:

  • Readability: You can see turn order, target highlights, particles that communicate an action and combat text without visual clutter.
  • Frame-time consistency: Camera movement, menu opening and confirmation remain smooth when several entities enter combat.
  • Input reach and conflicts: You can attack, change targets, confirm and cancel without awkward hand movement or duplicate bindings.

Keep a short change log with the old value, the new value and the observed result. If a change improves one encounter but harms another, choose the profile that matches how you actually play and investigate entity configuration rather than continuing to lower every visual option.

When to stop tuning and report a mod problem

If the minimal profile still crashes, menus fail to open, or the same action breaks across multiple worlds, preserve the instance log, exact mod and loader versions, configuration backup and reproduction steps. Re-test without unrelated mods before reporting the issue to the mod’s maintainers. Mojang’s support channel will not troubleshoot failures caused by third-party modding, so provide the technical details to the project or pack maintainer instead.

For a stable installation, keep the working settings and configuration backed up. Mod loaders, Sodium builds, TurnBasedMinecraftMod releases and overlay compatibility change over time; recheck the installed versions before copying this layout to another instance.

The recommended order, in one checklist

  • Match Minecraft, Forge or NeoForge, Sodium and TurnBasedMinecraftMod versions.
  • Back up the instance and record Sodium’s defaults.
  • Set a frame cap your hardware can sustain during the busiest battle.
  • Reduce render and simulation distance together only if transitions hitch.
  • Lower entity distance, particles, weather and clouds while preserving target readability.
  • Disable shaders and overlays during diagnosis; test RTSS and ASUS GPU Tweak III separately.
  • Inspect TBM_Config.toml and server entries when only certain encounters fail.
  • Keep vanilla movement controls, then bind attack, target, confirm and cancel to reachable, non-conflicting keys.
  • Audit the Controls screen after every mod update and validate the full battle sequence.
  • Retest one change at a time and retain the smallest adjustment that solves the observed problem.
