Best Monitors for Nintendo Switch in 2026: Budget, 4K, Portable and Switch 2 Picks

For the original Switch, a 24–27-inch 1080p IPS monitor is usually the smartest buy. Switch 2 owners should consider 4K, HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz modes.

For the original Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED, buy a 24- to 27-inch 1080p IPS monitor with HDMI and a convenient audio option. Nintendo lists TV-mode output at up to 1080p over HDMI, so paying extra for 240Hz, 4K, OLED or HDMI 2.1 will not make those consoles render at a higher resolution or frame rate.

Switch 2 changes the calculation: specialist testing reports docked support for 4K at 60Hz and up to 120Hz at 1080p or 1440p, making a 4K high-refresh monitor more defensible. Switch Lite is the exception: it does not support ordinary TV mode, so it cannot be connected to a monitor for standard docked play.

This guide separates the best value for the original Switch from monitors worth considering for Switch 2, PC gaming and other modern consoles.

Nintendo’s technical specifications list the original Switch’s TV-mode output, while Nintendo’s setup instructions explain the required dock, AC adapter and HDMI connection.

Quick picks

Pick Best for Target specification Main trade-off
24-inch 1080p IPS monitor Original Switch value 1080p, 60Hz or higher, HDMI, speakers or headphone output Less desktop space than a 27-inch model
Sceptre E248W family Basic budget setup 24-inch-class 1080p display Exact suffix, audio features and current availability must be checked
ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ Mixed Switch and PC use 27-inch, 1440p, high refresh rate Its extra resolution and refresh rate are wasted by the original Switch alone
Gigabyte M28U 4K mixed-device setup 28-inch-class 4K display Expensive and unnecessary for original Switch-only use
ASUS ROG Strix XG16 Travel Portable display with HDMI input Power and dock compatibility require exact-model checks
LG UltraGear 27GS95QE Premium image quality OLED gaming monitor Cost and burn-in management make it poor value for Switch alone
4K HDMI 2.1 monitor Switch 2 and multiple consoles 4K, 120Hz-capable input, HDMI 2.1 Check the monitor’s supported console modes; HDMI 2.1 alone is not a guarantee

These named models are candidates drawn from current third-party coverage, not a claim that every model is the best available in every region. Check the official product page, exact model suffix, current price and input-mode table before buying.

Best monitors for the original Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED

Best overall: a 24- to 27-inch 1080p IPS monitor

The best general-purpose choice is usually a conventional 1080p IPS monitor. It matches the original Switch’s maximum docked output, avoids unnecessary scaling and is widely available at sensible prices.

Choose 24 inches if you sit close to the desk or also want sharp text for school or office work. Choose 27 inches if you prefer a larger, more immersive image and can accept that 1080p looks less crisp at that size.

Look for HDMI, low input lag, a usable stand and either built-in speakers or a 3.5mm headphone output that passes HDMI audio. A monitor can display the Switch perfectly yet be inconvenient if it offers no practical way to hear the game.

Best budget direction: Sceptre E248W

The Sceptre E248W is a basic budget candidate for an original Switch setup. It makes sense when the goal is simply a 1080p screen with HDMI rather than advanced PC-gaming features.

Buy it only if: the exact listing confirms HDMI input, the desired speaker or headphone arrangement, acceptable stand and warranty details, and the correct model suffix.

Skip it if: you also need a premium PC display, height adjustment, multiple modern inputs or particularly strong motion performance. Verify the current specification at Sceptre’s official site, since retailer listings and suffixes can differ.

Best 27-inch mixed-use direction: ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ

The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ is more appropriate for someone who plays on PC as well as Switch. Its 1440p resolution and high refresh capability can improve desktop gaming, while the larger screen is more immersive from a desk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the original Switch, however, the benefits are secondary. The console still sends a 1080p signal, which the monitor must scale. Check current HDMI behavior, audio features and availability on the official ASUS product page.

Best portable direction: ASUS ROG Strix XG16

A portable monitor can suit dorm rooms, travel and temporary gaming setups, but it is not automatically plug-and-play. The ASUS ROG Strix XG16 is a travel-oriented candidate; confirm that the exact version accepts the Switch dock’s HDMI signal and determine whether it needs separate USB power.

A USB-C port may provide charging only. It does not automatically mean that the monitor accepts video from a standard Switch dock. Also check brightness, speakers, headphone output, stand stability and whether the screen can be positioned comfortably.

Best premium image-quality direction: LG UltraGear 27GS95QE

The LG UltraGear 27GS95QE is an OLED option for buyers who want excellent contrast and very fast pixel response for PC and other premium gaming. It can produce a spectacular image, but it is difficult to justify for an original Switch alone.

OLED brings a higher price and requires sensible burn-in management, especially when displaying static desktop elements for long periods. Buy it for the complete mixed-use setup—not because the original Switch needs OLED.

See the manufacturer’s current information at LG’s official product page.

Best monitor approach for Nintendo Switch 2

Switch 2 owners should choose by the modes they actually intend to use. RTINGS’ current Switch 2 monitor coverage reports docked 4K at 60Hz and up to 120Hz at 1080p and 1440p. These are specialist test findings, so check Nintendo’s current documentation and the monitor’s own compatibility table before purchase.

Best future-proof choice: 4K HDMI 2.1

A 4K monitor with HDMI 2.1 is the clearest future-proof direction for Switch 2, particularly if it will also serve a PS5, Xbox, gaming PC or 4K media device. It preserves access to higher-resolution output and offers a wider compatibility margin for modern console modes.

Do not assume every monitor labeled HDMI 2.1 supports every Switch 2 combination. Look for explicit support for 4K/60Hz and the desired 1080p or 1440p/120Hz modes, then check whether HDR is available at those settings.

4K mixed-use candidate: Gigabyte M28U

The Gigabyte M28U is a sensible direction for a 4K desk shared by Switch 2, PC and other consoles. It is much harder to justify if the only source is an original Switch, because that console remains a 1080p/60Hz-class device.

Verify the current revision’s HDMI bandwidth, supported resolutions, audio outputs, firmware behavior and regional availability at Gigabyte’s product page.

High-end Switch 2 alternatives

RTINGS’ July 31, 2026 Switch 2 guide names models including the MSI MPG 274URDFW E16M, Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx, ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3 and ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27ACDNG, among other notable options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These belong in a Switch 2 and premium mixed-gaming shortlist, not in a default recommendation for original Switch owners. Their value depends on 4K, 120Hz, HDR, OLED or mini-LED performance being useful on your other devices.

Read the current testing at RTINGS.

What specifications actually matter?

Resolution

  • 1080p: the practical match for the original Switch. It is usually the best value and avoids unnecessary scaling.
  • 1440p: worthwhile for PC gaming, sharper desktop work and some Switch 2 modes. The original Switch will still be scaled from 1080p.
  • 4K: best justified by Switch 2, a 4K PC, other consoles or media. It is not a necessary upgrade for original Switch-only play.

Scaling quality varies. A 4K monitor may make a 1080p signal look clean, but not every monitor processes that signal equally well.

Refresh rate

For the original Switch, treat 60Hz as the important target. A 144Hz, 165Hz or 240Hz monitor does not cause Switch games to render at 144 or 240 frames per second. Higher refresh is useful for a PC, Switch 2 or another console, not as an upgrade to the original Switch’s output.

HDMI

The original Switch does not need HDMI 2.1. HDMI 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 is sufficient for 1080p/60Hz when the monitor accepts the signal correctly.

  • Vesa wall mount ready; Lamp Life: 30,000+ Hours
  • Windows 10 Sceptre Monitors are fully compatible with Windows 10, the most recent operating System available on PCs.Brightness: 220 cd/M2

For Switch 2, HDMI 2.1 can be worthwhile for 4K/60Hz and modern-console compatibility, but inspect the exact input-mode table. Avoid DisplayPort-only monitors: the dock is designed to connect through HDMI.

Audio

Prioritize built-in speakers or a 3.5mm output that passes HDMI audio. Speakers are convenient, though monitor speakers are typically weaker than dedicated speakers or headphones. If the monitor has neither, budget for an external audio solution and confirm how it will connect.

Panel type

  • IPS: the safest default for viewing angles, color consistency and value.
  • VA: potentially better contrast, especially in a dark room, but some models show dark-transition smearing.
  • OLED: outstanding contrast and response, but expensive and subject to burn-in management.

Panel type should not be judged in isolation. Scaling, input lag, audio, connectivity and price matter more than the label for an original Switch setup.

HDR and VRR

HDR is a secondary feature for original Switch buyers. An HDR label does not make a non-HDR game HDR, and inexpensive displays may lack the brightness or contrast needed for a convincing HDR image.

FreeSync, G-Sync and other adaptive-sync labels are similarly low priorities for original Switch use. They may benefit a PC or another console, but do not assume the Switch will use a monitor’s adaptive-sync mode.

Size and aspect ratio

  • 24 inches: the sharpest-value choice for 1080p at a typical desk distance.
  • 27 inches: more immersive, but 1080p appears less sharp for text and fine detail.
  • 28–32 inches: pair more naturally with 1440p or 4K.
  • 15–18 inches: portable, but check power, brightness, HDMI input and audio carefully.

The correct size depends on desk depth and viewing distance. Ultrawide monitors receive a 16:9 Switch signal, which may produce black bars or stretching. A standard 16:9 monitor is the safer choice unless the ultrawide has reliable aspect-ratio controls.

How to choose by console

Your setup Prioritize Usually avoid paying extra for
Original Switch only 24–27-inch 1080p IPS, HDMI, audio, low lag 240Hz, OLED, HDMI 2.1 and 4K
Original Switch plus PC 1440p, high refresh, good 1080p scaling, DisplayPort plus HDMI Features your PC cannot use
Switch 2 plus modern consoles 4K, HDMI 2.1, 120Hz modes, HDR and low lag Unverified compatibility claims
Travel setup Powered portable HDMI monitor, stable stand and practical audio USB-C-only models without confirmed dock compatibility
Couch gaming A TV with built-in speakers and remote control A desk monitor that is too small for the room

Setting up a Switch with a monitor

  1. Connect the official AC adapter to the Switch dock.
  2. Connect an HDMI cable to the dock’s HDMI OUT port.
  3. Connect the other end to the monitor’s HDMI input.
  4. Place the console in the dock.
  5. Select the monitor’s matching HDMI input.
  6. Detach the Joy-Con controllers if you will use them wirelessly.

The console’s built-in screen turns off while it is docked. Nintendo’s official connection guide covers this procedure.

If there is no picture

  1. Confirm the monitor is on the correct HDMI input.
  2. Check that the dock is receiving power.
  3. Use the official Nintendo AC adapter.
  4. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
  5. Try another HDMI port and another HDMI cable.
  6. Remove soundbars, receivers, switches, DVI adapters and other intermediaries.
  7. Test another monitor or TV.
  8. Test another dock if available.
  9. If the problem follows the console or dock across multiple displays, contact Nintendo Support.

Nintendo’s blank-screen troubleshooting guidance recommends these checks. The official adapter is particularly important when the console reports that it cannot connect to the TV; see Nintendo’s adapter warning guidance.

Final buying checklist

  • Does the monitor have a native HDMI input?
  • Does it accept 1080p/60Hz reliably?
  • Does it have speakers or a useful HDMI-audio headphone output?
  • Is the screen size suitable for your desk distance?
  • Will 1080p scaling look acceptable on a 1440p or 4K panel?
  • For Switch 2, does the input table explicitly list the modes you need?
  • Are the stand, VESA mount, input switching and extra ports useful to you?
  • Have you checked the exact model suffix, current availability and regional warranty?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Nintendo Switch connect to a monitor?

Yes. The original Switch and Switch OLED connect in docked TV mode through the dock’s HDMI OUT port. Switch Lite does not support ordinary TV mode.

Do I need HDMI 2.1 for the original Switch?

No. A correctly functioning HDMI 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 input is sufficient for the original Switch’s up-to-1080p TV output.

Is a 144Hz monitor useful with the original Switch?

Only for another device. It does not make the original Switch render above its own supported output.

Can I use a portable monitor?

Yes, if it explicitly accepts HDMI video from the dock and has compatible power requirements. USB-C charging does not automatically provide USB-C video input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an ultrawide monitor work?

It can display the Switch’s 16:9 signal, but may add black bars or stretch the image. Confirm that the monitor has suitable aspect-ratio controls.
