For most nontechnical teams, n8n Cloud is the best n8n hosting option in 2026 because n8n operates the instance, upgrades and core infrastructure. Its annual-billing plans start at 20€/month for 2,500 workflow executions and 50€/month for 10,000 executions. If you can administer Linux, a self-hosted server costs less at the small end: an OVHcloud VPS-1 is listed at $5.85/month and a Hetzner CX23 at $7.09/month in a September 2026 comparison, before you add backups and your own maintenance. Managed self-hosting from providers such as Selfhost.dev or Elestio sits between those extremes. The right choice depends less on raw CPU than on who will configure HTTPS webhooks, protect encryption keys, restore backups, apply updates and answer support requests.

Choose n8n Cloud when you want the fastest route to a working automation system and do not want to run a server. Choose a low-cost VPS such as OVHcloud or Hetzner when minimizing the monthly bill matters more than administration time. Choose a managed self-hosted service such as Selfhost.dev or Elestio when you need your own environment but want HTTPS, updates or backups handled for you.
These are two different operating models. n8n Cloud is managed by n8n; self-hosting leaves the infrastructure, upgrades, security configuration and recovery process with you or with a hosting partner. A cheap virtual machine is not automatically the cheapest complete solution once backup storage, monitoring, outage recovery and engineering time are included.

How do n8n Cloud and self-hosting differ?
n8n describes Cloud as the managed option: n8n runs the instance for you. With self-hosting, you control how n8n runs and how the environment is managed, but you also own the operational work.
| Decision factor | n8n Cloud | Self-hosted VPS | Managed self-hosting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server administration | Handled by n8n | Handled by you or your team | Shared with the provider; confirm the exact boundary |
| Billing model | Plan price tied to workflow executions | Server, storage, backup and any support charges | Provider subscription, usually with defined resources |
| HTTPS and webhooks | Configured as part of the managed service | You configure a domain, TLS certificate, reverse proxy and webhook URL | May be preconfigured; verify before purchase |
| Encryption key and credentials | Managed within the Cloud service | You must persist the encryption key and n8n data directory | Confirm where keys are stored and how they survive a rebuild |
| Backups and restoration | Follow the Cloud service terms | You design, pay for and test backups | May include scheduled backups; check restoration procedure |
| Updates | n8n manages the service | You schedule and validate upgrades | Provider may offer one-click or automatic updates |
| Scaling | Change plan according to execution and concurrency needs | Resize or redesign the server and queue architecture | Use the provider’s resource and scaling options |
| Support scope | n8n handles product and licensing issues | Provider handles infrastructure; you handle n8n operations | Depends on the contract and provider |
Which n8n Cloud plan should you choose?
n8n Cloud pricing is execution-based, so estimate scheduled runs, webhook-triggered workflows and chatbot activity rather than looking only at server size. The prices below are the annual-billing figures listed by n8n in 2026.
| Plan | Price and commitment | Included executions | Concurrency | Hosting model |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 20€/month, billed annually | 2,500 workflow executions | Five concurrent executions | n8n Cloud |
| Pro | 50€/month, billed annually | 10,000 workflow executions | Up to 50 concurrent executions | n8n Cloud |
| Business | 667€/month, billed annually | 40,000 workflow executions | Not stated in the cited pricing figures | Self-hosted only |
When is Starter enough?
Starter suits a small set of low-frequency automations, internal notifications and modest webhook traffic. Five concurrent executions can become a constraint when several schedules fire together, even if the monthly execution allowance is not exhausted. Count the maximum simultaneous jobs your busiest period can create, not just the average number of runs.
When does Pro make sense?
Pro raises the allowance to 10,000 executions and concurrency to as many as 50. It is a practical Cloud step-up for teams with many scheduled workflows or bursts of webhook activity that would queue on Starter.
What does the Business figure mean?
The 667€/month annual-billing figure is for 40,000 executions and is listed as self-hosted only. It should not be read as a third Cloud tier; compare its commercial and operational requirements with running your own environment.
Which VPS is best for n8n if you will self-host?
OVHcloud is the lowest-cost figure in the September 2026 comparison, while Hetzner has an official n8n deployment guide and a similarly inexpensive configuration. DigitalOcean is a reasonable fit when your team already operates there. All three require an operator who understands DNS, TLS, persistent storage, updates and backups.

OVHcloud VPS-1: lowest listed monthly price
The independent September 2026 comparison lists an OVHcloud VPS-1 at $5.85/month in the US, with 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM, and notes that a backup is required. The figure is a dated comparison value, not a guaranteed checkout price. You must edit the configuration and set up the public webhook address yourself, making this the better choice for a technically confident operator who prioritizes a low recurring bill.
Hetzner Cloud CX23: inexpensive with an official deployment path
The same comparison lists a Hetzner CX23 at $7.09/month for 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM. n8n’s Hetzner instructions use Docker Compose and Caddy as a reverse proxy; the guide says CPX11 is enough for most use and recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 2 vCPU when n8n Assistant is added. The server price does not remove your responsibility for HTTPS, the webhook URL, persistent data and restorable backups.
DigitalOcean: convenient for teams already in its ecosystem
n8n documents DigitalOcean as a self-hosting route. The 2026 comparison reports $24/month for a 2-vCPU, 4-GiB server and says backups cost extra. Pick it when your team already uses DigitalOcean networking, monitoring or access controls; otherwise, its listed price is higher than the small OVHcloud and Hetzner configurations.
Are managed n8n hosts worth the extra cost?
Managed self-hosting can remove the most failure-prone setup tasks while preserving a separate server environment. Compare exactly what the provider manages: a claim of one-click deployment is not the same as guaranteed backup restoration, upgrade testing or application support.
Selfhost.dev
A September 2026 comparison authored by Selfhost.dev lists its managed 2-vCPU, 4-GB Europe server at $15.18/month. That comparison says HTTPS, webhook configuration, encryption-key persistence and one-click updates are already set up. Because the figure and feature description come from the provider’s own comparison, treat them as vendor-stated terms and confirm current limits, region and backup policy before ordering.
Elestio
The same comparison lists Elestio at $16.06/month for 2 vCPU and 4 GB in Germany. It reports managed updates and daily backups, while warning that automatic updates should be tested. Ask whether backups are retained separately from the server and whether you can perform a restore before relying on the service for production automations.

How much does self-hosting n8n really cost?
The server line item is only the starting point. A realistic comparison includes recurring infrastructure, one-time setup and the value of the time required to keep the service reliable.
| Cost component | Cloud | DIY self-hosting | Managed self-hosting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compute | Included in plan | VPS charge; examples range from $5.85 to $24/month in the cited 2026 figures | Included in provider subscription; examples are $15.18 and $16.06/month |
| Backups | Governed by Cloud terms | Separate storage or provider backup; OVHcloud’s cited VPS-1 figure requires a backup | May be included; verify retention and restore access |
| Domain and TLS | Managed service path | Domain, DNS and certificate configuration are yours | May be configured by the provider |
| Operations time | Low | Highest: updates, monitoring, recovery and security | Lower, but contract-dependent |
| Execution accounting | Explicit plan allowance | Policy depends on your deployment and any commercial n8n terms | Confirm how executions and limits are counted |
Use the Cloud price as an operational baseline, not just a software fee. If a $7 server requires several hours each month to patch, monitor and recover, its effective cost can exceed a managed plan. Conversely, a stable low-volume installation may make a VPS economical when you already have the skills and tooling.

What technical requirements must a self-hosted n8n installation meet?
Reliable webhooks and recoverability matter more than choosing the largest virtual machine. Before deploying, verify each of the following.
- Public HTTPS: External webhook services need a reachable HTTPS endpoint. Put n8n behind a reverse proxy, issue a valid certificate and set the webhook URL to the public address rather than an internal container hostname.
- Persistent encryption key: Keep n8n’s encryption key outside ephemeral containers and preserve it across rebuilds. If the key changes, stored credentials may no longer be readable.
- Persistent data directory: Mount durable storage for n8n data and configuration. A container replacement must not erase credentials, workflow metadata or execution information you need to retain.
- Backups that can be restored: Save application data and the database according to a schedule, keep a copy separate from the primary server and document a restore procedure. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
- Update control: Decide who reviews release notes, schedules upgrades and rolls back a failed update. Automatic updates reduce routine work but can introduce compatibility problems, especially when community nodes or external services are involved.
- Resource headroom: CPU and RAM must cover concurrent executions, not only idle usage. Add capacity or redesign for queue mode when workloads regularly overlap.
Which database and queue architecture should you use?
n8n’s hosting guidance recommends PostgreSQL for production. SQLite is suitable for development and small single-instance setups, while Redis 7 or newer is recommended for queue mode. MySQL and MariaDB are marked as unsupported n8n backends.
SQLite for development or a small single instance
SQLite minimizes setup and can be appropriate for a development machine or a small installation with one n8n process. It is not the production default in n8n’s hosting guidance, so plan a PostgreSQL deployment when reliability, growth or multiple workers matter.
PostgreSQL for production
Use PostgreSQL for a production deployment and include its data in your backup and restore design. Separating the database from the application container makes replacement and scaling easier, but it also adds credentials, network access and maintenance decisions.

Redis for queue mode
Queue mode lets you separate the main n8n process from workers when execution volume or concurrency demands it. n8n’s guidance calls for Redis 7 or newer; queue mode therefore adds another service to secure, monitor and back up appropriately.
How do you deploy n8n on a VPS?
The exact commands vary by provider, but the reliable sequence is the same. n8n documents deployment paths for DigitalOcean, Heroku, Hetzner Cloud, Google Cloud Run, AWS, Azure, GKE, OpenShift Local and Docker Compose.
- Choose a region and server size. Start with at least the resources required by your workload, then leave headroom for concurrent executions and database activity.
- Install the supported deployment stack. Docker Compose is a common path; use the provider’s image and pin versions deliberately rather than relying on an unreviewed floating tag.
- Create durable storage. Persist the n8n data directory, database data and encryption key before importing credentials or enabling production workflows.
- Configure DNS and HTTPS. Point a domain to the server, place a reverse proxy such as Caddy in front of n8n, obtain a certificate and set the public webhook URL.
- Set access controls. Restrict administrative ports, use strong unique credentials, limit database exposure and grant only the access needed by operators and workers.
- Configure PostgreSQL when moving beyond a small single instance. Keep database connection settings in protected environment variables and include the database in backups.
- Test a complete workflow path. Trigger an external webhook, verify that callbacks return over HTTPS, confirm credentials survive a restart and inspect logs for failed jobs.
- Document recovery. Record the image version, environment variables, encryption-key location, DNS settings and restore steps so another operator can rebuild the service.
Who supports a self-hosted n8n installation?
n8n’s self-hosted support policy covers licensing and product-functionality issues. It does not cover server access, password resets, operating-system configuration, networking, performance, workflow logic or provider billing. Those issues belong to the server administrator or hosting provider.
This boundary should influence your purchase. Cloud reduces the number of infrastructure tickets your team must solve. A DIY VPS leaves you responsible for the operating system, firewall, TLS, storage, monitoring and incident response. A managed host can narrow that gap, but only to the extent written in its support terms.

How should you choose between these options?
Antihost VPS is listed first here for teams that want to self-host n8n: its Linux VPS instances offer full root access, NVMe storage and regions in the USA East, Netherlands and Ukraine. Install n8n yourself and evaluate the 14-day free trial before committing.
Choose n8n Cloud when:
- You need a working instance quickly.
- No one on the team wants to maintain Linux, Docker, DNS and TLS.
- Your execution volume fits the Starter or Pro allowance.
- You prefer a predictable service boundary for product and licensing support.
Choose OVHcloud or Hetzner when:
- You can administer the server and troubleshoot networking.
- You want the lowest listed infrastructure cost.
- You are prepared to configure HTTPS, persistence, backups and upgrades yourself.
- You accept that the quoted September 2026 prices can change at checkout.
Choose DigitalOcean when:
- Your existing team, monitoring and access controls already run there.
- The higher listed server price is acceptable in exchange for ecosystem consistency.
- You budget separately for backups and ongoing administration.
Choose a managed host when:
- You need a separate self-hosted environment but lack time for routine operations.
- The provider clearly states who owns HTTPS, updates, backups and restore testing.
- You are willing to pay more than a bare VPS for reduced setup work.
Can you host n8n for free?
n8n can be self-hosted as software, but a dependable public installation still needs compute, storage, a domain or hostname, HTTPS, backups and an operator. Free cloud credits or an always-free virtual machine may be useful for learning, yet quotas, suspension rules and missing backup guarantees make them a poor foundation for production webhooks.

What should you verify before paying?
- Is the price monthly, annual-billing equivalent or dependent on a long prepaid term?
- Which country and data center will store workflow data?
- Are backups included, how long are they retained and can you initiate a restore?
- Does the service preserve the n8n encryption key during rebuilds?
- Who configures the webhook URL, reverse proxy and TLS certificate?
- Are updates manual, one-click or automatic, and can you roll back?
- How are workflow executions counted, and what happens after an allowance is exceeded?
- What support channel handles operating-system, networking and billing incidents?
- Can the plan be resized without rebuilding the instance?
Frequently Asked Questions
How many n8n executions should I budget for each month?
List every scheduled workflow run, then add expected webhook, form and chatbot triggers for the same period. Include retries and seasonal spikes rather than using a quiet-month average; compare that total with the 2,500-execution Starter or 10,000-execution Pro allowance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is 4 GB of RAM enough for an n8n server?
The Hetzner deployment guidance says CPX11 is enough for most use and recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 2 vCPU when n8n Assistant is added. Actual requirements rise with concurrent executions, large payloads, browser-based tasks and queue workers, so treat 4 GB as a starting configuration rather than a capacity guarantee.
What happens if my n8n VPS goes down?
Workflows stop while the instance, database or network is unavailable, and webhook callers may receive errors or time out. Recovery depends on your backup and restore plan; document DNS, persistent storage, encryption-key handling and database restoration before an outage occurs.
Does n8n Cloud remove every maintenance task?
It removes server administration for the managed instance, but your team still owns workflow design, credentials, external API limits and the execution allowance. You should still monitor failed runs and confirm that third-party services can reach the workflows they call.
Which data-center location should I select for self-hosted n8n?
Choose a region that meets your organization’s data-residency requirements and keeps latency reasonable for the services that trigger or receive webhooks. Record the location in your operations documentation because moving regions can involve DNS changes, backup transfer and a planned maintenance window.
