Performance still depends heavily on your phone, Android version, GPU drivers, renderer, and the individual game.
Older guides often list Citra, Lime3DS, Citra MMJ, and Azahar as equal choices. They are not. Citra is discontinued, Lime3DS has been superseded, and unofficial APK sources create unnecessary security risks. For a new installation, start with Azahar.

1. Azahar — best overall
Azahar is the strongest general recommendation for Android. It grew out of the Citra codebase and was formed through the merger of Lime3DS and PabloMK7’s Citra fork. The project describes it as the successor to those projects and provides both a Google Play build and a Vanilla Android build through its official GitHub repository.

For most people, install the official Google Play listing. It is the simplest installation path and avoids the risk of modified APKs found on download aggregators. Advanced users can use the Vanilla build when they specifically need its alternative file-management approach.

Android requirements
Azahar officially lists Android 10 or newer, a 64-bit device, approximately a Snapdragon 835-class CPU or better, OpenGL ES 3.2 or Vulkan 1.1 support, and at least 2GB of RAM, with 4GB recommended. These are baseline requirements, not a promise that every game will run smoothly.
Thermal throttling, GPU drivers, sustained battery temperature, resolution settings, and game-specific demands all matter. A phone that technically meets the minimum can still deliver poor results. Newer flagship and upper-midrange devices are generally better candidates than entry-level phones, but the exact SoC and game remain important.
Play build versus Vanilla build
- Google Play build: the right choice for most users who want the easiest installation and update path.
- Vanilla build: an official alternative described by the developers as technically superior for file management, but it is not distributed through Google Play.
If you use the Vanilla version, follow the project’s current instructions for Obtainium or the official GitHub release. Confirm that the APK comes from the Azahar repository, enable installation only for the source you deliberately selected, and avoid “Citra APK” or “3DS emulator APK” mirrors.

What happened to Citra and Lime3DS?
Citra was the original major open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator and previously had an Android version. Official development ended in 2024 following legal action involving Nintendo and the Yuzu project. Lime3DS then became an important continuation project, but it was later superseded by Azahar.
That means “Citra versus Lime3DS versus Azahar” is no longer a useful current comparison. Citra is historical, Lime3DS is an older continuation, and Azahar is the forward-looking project. Azahar is not simply the latest official Citra release; it is a successor based on Citra-related code and forks.
2. Lime3DS — useful history, not the default choice
Lime3DS was a significant Citra continuation and was widely recommended in 2025-era Android guides. If it is already installed and works for a particular game, there is no need to delete it immediately. However, new users should generally choose Azahar instead because it is the active successor with the clearer current distribution and update path.
Be especially cautious with third-party Lime3DS download pages. An old project name appearing in search results does not prove that an APK is authentic or safe.

3. Citra MMJ — an experimental legacy fallback
Citra MMJ is an unofficial fork that some Android users have found useful on particular older phones or individual games. It should not be presented as a co-equal current winner. Support status, compatibility, and APK authenticity are difficult to generalize without a verified current release source.
Try a legacy fork only when Azahar produces a reproducible problem on your exact device and title, and only when you can verify the source. Do not replace a working installation merely because an old guide claims that Citra MMJ is universally faster.
4. Lemuroid and RetroArch — alternatives for multi-system libraries
Lemuroid can appeal to users who want one library-oriented interface for several consoles. RetroArch can suit existing users who prefer a unified frontend and are comfortable managing cores, directories, controllers, and renderer settings. Azahar’s release information also documents an Android libretro core.
Neither option is automatically a better dedicated 3DS emulator. A frontend adds another configuration layer, and troubleshooting may involve the frontend, the core, the renderer, or the selected directories. If your only goal is playing 3DS games, the standalone Azahar app is the simpler starting point.

How to install Azahar safely
Beginner route: Google Play
- Open the official Azahar Google Play listing.
- Check the developer and package identity against the official project information.
- Install the app and complete its initial setup.
- Select the folder containing your legally obtained game files.
- Configure or import system files when a game or feature requires them.
- Launch a title and begin with conservative graphics settings.
Advanced route: Vanilla APK
- Read the current installation instructions in the official Azahar repository.
- Use the documented Obtainium route or download the APK directly from official GitHub releases.
- Verify the repository and release before installing; do not use an APK mirror.
- Back up the existing Azahar or Lime3DS user-data directory.
- Install the selected build and re-select the user directory if Android requests it.
The app does not supply games. Use only game images, system files, updates, downloadable content, and other data you are legally entitled to use. Copyright and anti-circumvention rules differ by jurisdiction, so do not assume that downloading ROMs or system files from an unknown website is lawful.
Performance: Vulkan versus OpenGL
Newer Azahar Android builds use Vulkan by default in fresh configurations, but Vulkan is not universally better. It may perform well on modern hardware, while OpenGL can be a useful compatibility fallback.
- Try Vulkan first on a current installation.
- Switch to OpenGL if a game crashes, shows missing textures, or has severe graphical corruption.
- If a renderer change does not immediately help, clear or rebuild the affected game’s shader cache.
- Do not transfer an OpenGL compatibility result directly to Vulkan.
The official compatibility list ranks reports from 0 to 5, with lower numbers indicating better compatibility and 99 meaning not tested. Its public reports are made against OpenGL because the project considers Vulkan unstable for that reporting process. A good rating therefore does not guarantee identical Android or Vulkan behavior.

- Game: different titles stress the emulator in different ways.
- Chipset and GPU: Adreno and Mali devices can behave differently, even at similar advertised specifications.
- Drivers: manufacturer GPU-driver behavior can affect rendering and stability.
- Resolution: 1× internal resolution is the safest starting point.
- Heat: a phone may begin well and slow down after sustained play because of thermal throttling.
- Controls: touchscreen, motion, camera, microphone, and dual-screen demands can make a technically playable game inconvenient.
“Full speed” is not a universal property of an emulator. Any meaningful performance claim must identify the phone, Android version, renderer, resolution, game, and duration of play.

Files, formats, and compatibility
Keep game files, system files, updates, downloadable content, save data, and shader caches conceptually separate. File extensions alone do not establish that a file is usable. Azahar development has changed handling for some 3DS formats, and issues involving encrypted files, .3ds, .cci, and .cia files have caused confusion.
Do not assume every file with a familiar extension will work. Consult the current release notes and project documentation for the version you install. Avoid downloading “fixed” or “decrypted” files from random sites.
Troubleshooting checklist
The app will not install
- Confirm the phone uses a 64-bit Android build and meets the Android 10 requirement.
- Use the official Play listing or official GitHub release only.
- For a sideloaded build, check Android’s permission for the specific source you selected.
- Remove conflicting old builds only after backing up user data and checking migration notes.
The game folder is empty
- Confirm that Azahar was granted access to the correct folder.
- Check that the files are legally obtained and in a format supported by the current release.
- Re-select the directory from the app’s game-library setup.
- Do not rename files or download replacements until you have checked the current documentation.
The game crashes or shows broken graphics
- Try Vulkan, then OpenGL, or reverse that order if you already changed renderers.
- Lower internal resolution to 1×.
- Disable texture modifications and enhancement features.
- Clear the individual game’s shader cache if the issue began after an update.
- Verify system files and consult the compatibility report for the exact title.
The game is too slow
- Use 1× resolution and disable enhancements.
- Try the other renderer.
- Close background apps and test while the phone is cool.
- Check whether sustained heat is causing throttling.
- Do not expect a device at the official minimum specification to run the whole library well.
Controls or motion features do not work
Configure the touchscreen layout and controller mapping, then check whether the title depends on gyroscope, accelerometer, camera, microphone, or other hardware. A Bluetooth or USB-C controller can improve ordinary input, but it cannot solve every motion-control requirement.

Save data disappeared or save states fail
Use the game’s normal save system as the primary method. Save states can become unreliable after changing emulator versions or settings. Back up save data before switching between Lime3DS, Azahar variants, or legacy forks, and never assume a save state is a substitute for an in-game save.
Should you use online features?
Do not assume that Nintendo eShop functions, SpotPass, online multiplayer, authentication, or other Nintendo services will work normally. Server availability, emulator implementation, account behavior, and Nintendo policy are separate issues. Treat online support as uncertain unless the current project documentation specifically confirms the feature for your setup.
Final recommendation
Install Azahar from Google Play if you want the simplest and safest current Android 3DS setup. Choose the official Vanilla build only if you understand sideloading and specifically need its file-management approach. Keep Lime3DS or an unofficial legacy fork as narrowly targeted troubleshooting options, not as default recommendations.
