Yes. Use Steam Broadcasting: open Steam > Settings > Broadcasting, choose who may watch, start your game, and have your friend select Watch Game from your profile or Friends List. For ordinary friend-to-friend viewing, you do not need Twitch, OBS, or an RTMP stream key.
Steam normally starts the broadcast when someone begins watching and ends it when you close the game. Privacy settings and game-capture compatibility determine whether your friend can connect.

How to let friends watch your Steam game
On the host’s PC
- Open the Steam client.
- Select Steam > Settings.
- Open Broadcasting. Steam may move or rename labels in future client updates, so look for this section rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Choose the privacy option that matches your audience.
- Launch the game.
- Tell your friend to open your Steam profile or Friends List and choose Watch Game.
With a request-based setting, Steam may show you a request to approve before the broadcast begins. You can refuse the request. Steam describes the feature and its normal start-and-stop behavior in its Broadcasting overview.
On the viewer’s PC
- Open the Steam Friends List.
- Find the friend who is currently in-game.
- Open the friend’s menu or profile.
- Select Watch Game.
- If Steam asks to send a request, wait for the host to approve it.
The button may not appear until the friend is visibly in-game, broadcasting is permitted, and Steam has refreshed the friend’s status.

Steam Broadcasting privacy settings explained
The exact wording can vary by Steam client version. The practical choices generally correspond to these levels:
| Setting | Who can watch | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcasting disabled | Nobody through Steam Broadcasting | Maximum privacy |
| Only friends I invite can watch | Friends you specifically permit | One-to-one viewing |
| Friends can request to watch | Friends must ask, and you can approve | The safest default for most people |
| Friends can watch | Friends may be able to start watching without an individual request | Casual group viewing |
| Anyone can watch my games | A public Steam audience | Public broadcasting |
Choose Friends can request to watch if you want control without sending individual invitations. Use the public option only when you are comfortable with strangers finding the broadcast through Steam’s Broadcasts areas or game Community Hubs.
Does Steam show your desktop?
Steam Broadcasting is intended to show the game, not every action on your desktop. However, do not treat that as a guarantee that private information is invisible. Steam Support documents a placeholder state when it cannot capture the active game, and capture behavior can differ when you switch windows or enable optional external-application capture. See Steam’s Broadcasting FAQ.

What friends can hear
Broadcasting carries gameplay video and associated audio, but voice-chat results depend on the game, Steam’s audio settings, microphone configuration, and the channel being used. Before relying on it, ask the viewer to check:
- Game audio and overall volume
- Your microphone input
- Steam voice settings
- Whether party or in-game voice chat is included
- Whether an echo occurs when both people use speakers
Steam Broadcasting is a convenient viewing feature, not automatically a full streaming production with scenes, alerts, moderation, webcam layouts, or analytics.
Why your friend cannot see “Watch Game”
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that both accounts are online and are Steam friends.
- Make sure the host is actually marked as in-game.
- On the host’s account, check Steam > Settings > Broadcasting.
- Launch the game before the viewer tries again.
- Approve any pending watch request.
- Refresh the Friends List or restart Steam on both PCs.
- Try borderless-windowed or windowed mode if Steam is not capturing the game.
- Temporarily disable conflicting overlays or capture tools.
- Test another game to determine whether the problem is specific to that title.
Some games and configurations are harder for Steam to capture, including unusual launchers, elevated applications, protected or anti-cheat windows, full-screen exclusive modes, and some non-Steam games added to your library. Steam does not provide a blanket guarantee that every game will broadcast identically.

If the viewer sees a blank or waiting screen
The game may have lost focus, Steam may be unable to capture its rendering mode, or the connection or encoding process may be temporarily struggling. Return to the game, wait briefly, and try again. If the issue persists, switch display modes and test another game.

The host’s upload connection, the viewer’s download connection, hardware encoding load, Wi-Fi quality, VPNs, firewall rules, and background traffic can all affect playback. Higher quality also demands more bandwidth and processing. Stop background uploads, try a wired connection if available, close unnecessary applications, and reduce the game’s resolution or use a less demanding display mode. Steam does not establish one universal bandwidth figure that applies to every friend-watching session.
Broadcasting versus Remote Play Together
These features solve different problems:
| Feature | Steam Broadcasting | Remote Play Together |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Let someone watch you play | Play supported local multiplayer games together |
| Viewer control | View-only | May include shared controller, keyboard, or mouse control |
| Best for | Spectating, coaching, or showing a game | Joining the host in multiplayer |
| Game ownership | Do not assume the viewer needs to own the game | Designed around the host’s supported game and Steam’s Remote Play Together system |
If your friend should participate rather than watch, use Steam Remote Play Together. It is not the same as Broadcasting: ordinary Broadcasting does not give the viewer control of your game.

When OBS, Discord, Twitch, or YouTube is a better choice
Use Steam Broadcasting for quick, private friend viewing. Choose another setup when you need:
- Webcam scenes, overlays, alerts, or custom layouts
- Public creator tools, moderation, analytics, or a persistent channel
- Multi-platform streaming
- More reliable desktop and application capture
- A recorded-video or professional production workflow
OBS Studio can provide advanced scenes and routing, while Twitch, YouTube Live, or Discord may better fit public streaming or group screen sharing. OBS is not required for Steam’s basic friend-watching feature. Steam’s separate Steamworks broadcasting workflow uses tools such as OBS and RTMP for advanced store-page or developer broadcasts; it is not the normal setup for one friend watching your game.
Common questions
Can someone watch without owning the game?
Steam’s Broadcasting information does not establish game ownership as a general requirement for ordinary viewing. Follow the requirement shown by the current Steam client if a particular session displays one.

Can I watch from a browser?
Steam exposes public broadcasts through Community and Broadcasts areas, but private friend viewing is normally entered through Steam’s profile or Friends List interface. Availability can depend on the current Steam client and broadcast privacy setting.
Does Steam save the broadcast?
Do not assume that a normal friend-watching session is automatically saved as a permanent video. Broadcasting is primarily a live viewing feature; use a dedicated recording or streaming workflow when you need an archive.
Can I stop one particular friend from watching?
Use an invite-only or request-based privacy setting, refuse unwanted requests, or change the broadcast privacy level. Steam’s exact controls may vary by client version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does watching let my friend control the game?
No. Ordinary Steam Broadcasting is for viewing. Shared control belongs to Remote Play Together or another interactive sharing method.
