If you want a starting point, the most consistently recommended Nintendo Switch games are Super Mario Bros. Wonder, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Party Jamboree for groups, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for racing. Beyond those, the right pick depends on whether you want a short party session, a long solo adventure or a deep role-playing campaign, so this guide sorts the list by how you play rather than presenting one universal order.
The title refers to a top 25. This page is not a reconstruction of any outlet’s December 2025 ranking, because the archived ranking and its order could not be recovered from the sources reviewed. Instead, it is an independently edited shortlist of 21 games that were available on Nintendo Switch in December 2025, with recommendations drawn from current editorial guides and from critic and user rating lists.

How this shortlist is ordered
Each entry is placed by four criteria. Every recommendation should be read against them:
- Genre and pace: platformer, adventure, racing, strategy, role-playing, simulation, shooter or roguelike action.
- Play setting: solo, local multiplayer or online multiplayer.
- Commitment: short sessions with easy entry, medium-length campaigns, or long campaigns and complex systems.
- Console edition: the original Nintendo Switch version or a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which are not interchangeable labels.
The ordering within each group reflects these criteria, not a claim that one game beats another for every player. The GamesRadar+ guide describes its own list as a changing editorial selection, and it notes that upcoming releases may change its recommendations, so the picks here should be treated as a December 2025 snapshot rather than a permanent verdict.

What the published rankings measure
Three widely cited lists use very different methods. Knowing which one you are reading explains why their picks overlap only partly.
| Source | Version and date | What it measures | Eligibility rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| GamesRadar+ Nintendo Switch guide | Current guide, labelled as a 2026 edition | Editorial selection across genres; its introduction says “The best Switch games still have life in them.” | No numeric threshold; upcoming releases may alter the list |
| Metacritic 2025 Switch and Switch 2 ranking | Published January 2, 2026 | Best-reviewed 2025 releases on either console, based on professional critic scores | At least seven scored professional reviews; if a title appears on both systems, the version with more critic reviews is used |
| Nintendo Life 2025 Switch and Switch 2 list | Living guide, updated over time | User ratings rather than critic scores or editorial choice | At least 30 user ratings |
Metacritic’s list is a critic-score ranking for 2025 releases, not an all-time best-games list, and it does not directly match a December 2025 snapshot. Nintendo Life’s list changes as new user ratings arrive, so a game’s position there can move without any change to the game itself.

Choosing by reader type
Families and party groups
Start with Super Mario Party Jamboree, which is built around local play among several people, then add Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for races that work in short bursts. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate suits groups who already know the roster, and Splatoon 3 rewards players who are happy to learn a team shooter. For younger players or mixed-experience groups, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Kirby and the Forgotten Land offer forgiving platforming with clear goals.
Rank #3
- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
- Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
- Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
- Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
Experienced genre fans
If you want depth, the strongest candidates are the long single-player games: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime Remastered, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Hollow Knight. Hades II and Ōkami are also strong choices for players who want a tightly built action game with a clear identity. Expect each of these to take many hours, and check the sections on editions before purchase.
New Switch owners
New owners often do best with a mix of one short game and one long game. Super Mario Party Jamboree or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will show what the console does well with other people, while Stardew Valley, Super Mario RPG or Luigi’s Mansion 3 offer a gentler solo start. Once you know which style you enjoy, a long adventure such as Link’s Awakening or Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a natural next step.
Rank #4
- Journey through space in two Super Mario adventures, now improved for the Nintendo Switch system!
- Travel the stars with enhanced resolution, improved UI, and additional content
- Learn more about the Lumas from additional Storybook chapters, groove to a bit of additional music
- Get additional Health and fall recovery in Assist Mode
- Join Rosalina and the Lumas to restore the Comet Observatory and rescue Princess Peach in Super Mario Galaxy.
Original Switch or Switch 2 Edition
Several entries in this list appear in Switch 2 Editions, and those editions are not simply the original game under a new label. Nintendo’s store page lists Switch 2 editions of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with their release dates, which shows why the console name needs to be checked on each listing. Store information is regional and can change, so confirm the edition on the page where you buy.
Metacritic’s 2025 ranking gives Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition a 95 Metascore, and gives Hades II – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition the same score. Metacritic reproduces this review sentence for Tears of the Kingdom, attributed to Metro GameCentral: “The definitive version of one of Nintendo’s most astounding technical and design achievements, that expands and refines the world of Breath Of The Wild in new and unexpected ways.” These are critic aggregation scores for specific editions, not sales figures, and they do not establish that either game is the best Switch game overall.
