What “daylight exploration” actually means
Some players use “daylight” to describe games that keep the landscape legible and inviting: broad outdoor spaces, visible routes, natural color and a low chance that every detour becomes a horror sequence. That does not require a permanently sunny clock. A game can still qualify if its main appeal is travelling through open country during the day while reserving night, caves or darker missions for contrast.
Three questions separate a genuinely good sightseeing game from an open world that merely has a large map:
- Can you choose your own route? Climbing, gliding, riding or driving should let you reach points of interest without a rigid sequence.
- Does travel provide its own reward? Wildlife, towns, ruins, side quests and changing scenery make movement worthwhile even when you are not completing the main objective.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — best for curiosity-led exploration
Breath of the Wild is the clearest match for players who want to point at a distant landmark and decide to investigate it. Buy Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch when your priority is the ability to make your own route and turn almost any visible landmark into a possible destination. It is the strongest first recommendation for “explore at my own pace” and “beautiful scenery without a rigid itinerary.”
Red Dead Redemption 2 — best for scenic travel and a living world
Red Dead Redemption 2 treats the journey between missions as meaningful play. You can ride through open western country, observe wildlife, pass through towns and let incidental activities fill the time between major story beats. The world feels designed for looking outward from the road rather than teleporting from objective to objective.

Choose Forza Horizon 5 when the ideal open world is a bright route through Mexico and your preferred viewpoint is behind a windscreen. It is the clearest answer to “open-world games with beautiful scenery and little or no combat.”
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — best for quest-rich wandering
Skyrim is built for the player who leaves the main quest because a cave, settlement or distant road looks more interesting. Its world combines broad outdoor wandering with a deep supply of side quests and character-building choices. You can spend an outing crossing the wilderness, enter a settlement, accept a new task and emerge with a different reason to continue travelling.

Why it is only daylight-friendly, not always bright
Skyrim has a day-and-night cycle, dungeons and darker fantasy content. A player seeking uninterrupted sunshine will encounter darkness, hostile interiors and more threatening situations than in Forza Horizon 5. Its advantage is choice: you can spend much of your time travelling outdoors and return to the more intense spaces when a quest gives you a reason.
Choose it if
Pick Skyrim Special Edition when your ideal open world is a long campaign of detours, side quests and character growth. It is the broadest sandbox on this list for players who want sightseeing to lead naturally into other kinds of adventure.

For the least combat
Choose Forza Horizon 5. Its core loop is driving and racing, and online competition is optional. You will give up on-foot character exploration, but you avoid the constant combat expectations of the other recommendations.
For quests and character-building
Choose Skyrim. It offers the strongest combination of wandering, side quests, caves, settlements and long-term character development.
For cinematic presentation
Choose Ghost of Tsushima. Its fields, forests and coastal routes are visually directed, and its focused combat supports a more deliberate samurai travel experience.
Daylight, night cycles and darker content
None of these games should be treated as a guarantee of permanent daylight. Breath of the Wild includes danger; Red Dead Redemption 2 contains mature violence; Forza Horizon 5 is the least combat-oriented but remains a racing game rather than a walking simulator; Skyrim has night, caves and darker fantasy material; and Ghost of Tsushima includes substantial combat.
If darkness is your main concern, distinguish between three kinds of discomfort:
- Visual darkness: Night travel or poorly lit interiors can make scenery harder to read.

- Mechanical pressure: Enemies, fights or time-sensitive objectives can prevent relaxed sightseeing.
Forza Horizon 5 minimizes the second and third concerns. Breath of the Wild minimizes route pressure. Red Dead Redemption 2 and Ghost of Tsushima offer the strongest scenic immersion but ask you to accept more combat and mature subject matter. Skyrim gives you the greatest quest variety while also exposing you to the most obvious night-and-dungeon contrast.
Platform and edition checks before you buy
Platform listings and editions can change by region, storefront and release arrangement. Check the current product page for your console or PC before purchasing, especially when a recommendation names an edition rather than a base game.
- Confirm your hardware: Check whether the listing is for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox or PC, and do not assume that an edition on one platform transfers to another.
- Match the edition: Look for the specific version you intend to play, such as Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch or Skyrim Special Edition.

Start with Breath of the Wild if “explore at my own pace” is the sentence that best describes what you want. Select Forza Horizon 5 instead when sightseeing should happen from a car and combat should be almost irrelevant. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the strongest scenic-travel world for players comfortable with mature violence, Skyrim is the most generous quest-and-wandering sandbox, and Ghost of Tsushima is the most deliberately cinematic choice.
