Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best one-game answer if you want a detailed crime-world substitute without taking vacation for launch week. It delivers the closest current preview of Rockstar’s world-building and pacing, but its 51-hour main story means it will outlast the wait. For a complete urban GTA-style package, choose Grand Theft Auto V; for a modern-city alternative, choose Watch Dogs 2; for a grounded crime story you can finish sooner, choose Mafia: The Old Country or Mafia: Definitive Edition; and for cheap, compact evenings, choose Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s official page lists no PC SKU, so this guide focuses on games that fit 60–90-minute sessions before and after launch.

When does GTA 6 come out, and how should a busy player plan around it?
Grand Theft Auto VI is dated 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s page identifies Vice City, the state of Leonida and protagonists Jason and Lucia, while Take-Two Interactive repeats the same date in its Form 10-Q filed 7 August 2026. The official page lists only those two current-generation consoles; Rockstar has not announced a PC version or PC date.

There is no official GTA VI story-length figure. Any hour count circulating before launch is a forecast, not a measured result. The practical question is therefore not whether another game is shorter than GTA VI, but whether it pays off in a 60–90-minute evening.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the closest Rockstar-made preview of the studio’s detail, animation and deliberate pacing. You play Arthur Morgan in the Van der Linde gang in 1899, with an epilogue set in 1907. Horses replace supercars and the frontier replaces Vice City, so it is not a modern-city clone; its value is the shared Rockstar DNA.
HowLongToBeat lists about 51 hours for the main objectives, 84.5 hours for the main story plus sides, and 196 hours for completionist play. Its estimate says approximately eight weeks at 1.5 hours per day with extra content. That length works well for short sessions because a ride, hunt, camp activity or mission can stand alone without requiring a launch-week binge.
Take-Two reported more than 85 million units sold-in worldwide for the game in 2026. The Steam list price checked 3 October 2026 was $59.99, although the game frequently receives discounts. It runs on PS4, Xbox One and PC, and is playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility.

If you want the complete GTA template: Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V remains the closest complete GTA package because it combines a contemporary American city, three protagonists, heists, wanted-level systems and access to GTA Online. Los Santos gives you the familiar loop of driving to a job, improvising when the police arrive, then wandering into side activities.
HowLongToBeat figures tabulated by GamerArabi on 21 October 2026 put the single-player campaign at about 32 hours, about 51 hours with extras and about 90 hours for completionist play; those figures exclude Online. Take-Two’s 7 August 2026 filing says the 2013 game has sold-in over 230 million units worldwide and includes access to GTA Online. The same filing says the GTA series has sold-in over 470 million units.
The Steam Enhanced list price checked in October 2026 was $29.99. It left Xbox Game Pass on 15 April 2026, so Game Pass availability should not be assumed. Pick it first if you have somehow missed it; skip it if you have already exhausted Los Santos.
If you want a modern American city with different systems: Watch Dogs 2
Watch Dogs 2 is the strongest non-Rockstar choice for a contemporary city, open missions and systemic mischief. Ubisoft’s official description introduces Marcus Holloway, a hacker in the San Francisco Bay Area; the playable region spans San Francisco, Oakland, Marin and Silicon Valley. You can hack cars, traffic lights, cranes and drones, then approach objectives through stealth, remote gadgets or direct action.
Its online co-op lets two players tackle activities together. The trade-off is gunplay that feels less convincing than its hacking sandbox, so approach it as a stealth-and-systems game rather than a straight shooting replacement for GTA.
The stated list price is $49.99, and Ubisoft+ Classics was listed at $7.99 per month. Insider Gaming, reporting WillyB’s 2026 figures, noted a jump of more than 1,100 percent to roughly 16,220 concurrent players during a 95-percent sale that brought the game to about £2.49. That is why it belongs in the budget-evening group despite the higher list price.
If you want the strongest grounded crime story: Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition puts Wei Shen undercover inside the Sun On Yee triad in Hong Kong. Its martial-arts combat is closer to an Arkham-style brawler than to GTA’s gunfights, while driving, investigations and faction pressure provide the crime-drama structure.

EverythingEdinburgh calls it the strongest all-round alternative because it combines open-world driving, melee combat and an undercover story. G2A’s comparison gives it an 87-percent match and a 4.4/5 score against GTA VI. There is no sequel, but the original remains a complete, focused campaign.
The Steam list price checked 3 October 2026 was $19.99, and it routinely falls lower. That combination of low cost and a self-contained story makes it a safer purchase than starting a 100-hour RPG three weeks before GTA VI.
If you want a huge city and RPG progression: Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition
Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person RPG, not a third-person crime sandbox. Night City supplies the dense urban backdrop, but character builds, skill trees, dialogue choices and weapon progression define the experience more than wanted-level improvisation. Buy the Ultimate Edition if purchasing new: it includes the overhauled 2.0-era game and Phantom Liberty.
HowLongToBeat lists the base game at about 26 hours for the main objectives, 63 hours with extras and 109 hours for completionist play. The Ultimate Edition is listed at about 40 hours main, 83 hours main plus sides and 128 hours completionist, with approximately nine weeks at 1.5 hours a day while pursuing extra content.
The Steam list price checked in October 2026 was $59.99. Current platforms listed by xGamerss and HowLongToBeat are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Mac and Switch 2. Choose it when you want a long evening RPG that will continue well beyond GTA VI’s launch, not when you need a quick GTA substitute.
If you want cars, guns and co-op chaos: Saints Row: The Third Remastered
Saints Row: The Third Remastered is the closest non-Rockstar sandbox loop if your priority is cars, guns, criminal missions, customization and freedom to cause trouble between objectives. G2A News rated it a 93-percent overall GTA alternative on those criteria. Its tone is absurd comedy rather than Rockstar’s satire, so the match is mechanical, not atmospheric.
The full campaign supports co-op, making it a strong weekend option with a friend. xGamerss and GTA Zone prefer this remaster to the 2022 reboot because it was better received. Volition was shut down by Embracer on 31 August 2023, and no new Saints Row is in development.

If you need credits before launch: Mafia: The Old Country
Mafia: The Old Country is the cleanest choice when “I cannot take time off” means “I need an ending before 19 November.” It is deliberately linear rather than an open-ended toybox, follows Enzo Favara in early-1900s Sicily and uses Unreal Engine 5. Hangar 13 and 2K released it on 8 August 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The stated price is $49.99. G2A’s GTA VI comparison scores it only 3.8/5 because it does not provide a modern sandbox, but that limitation is the reason to choose it for a busy schedule: missions advance a defined crime drama instead of inviting dozens of side detours.
If you want a shorter classic: Mafia: Definitive Edition
Mafia: Definitive Edition remakes the 2002 original as Tommy Angelo’s 1930s story in Lost Heaven. Like The Old Country, it is a linear crime drama rather than a free-roaming GTA-style playground. The Steam list price checked in October 2026 was $39.99.
xGamerss notes a 14 August 2026 60fps upgrade on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for eligible owners. It is available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, with that current-generation upgrade path. Choose it when period atmosphere and a defined campaign matter more than systemic experimentation.

What should you play for Vice City context?
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition is useful as setting homework, not as the strongest game on this list. Tommy Vercetti’s 1986 story shows the earlier Vice City interpretation that GTA VI revisits through Leonida’s Florida analogue. The 2021 Trilogy had a troubled launch and poor reviews, so buy it for historical context rather than expecting the polish of a new Rockstar release.

xGamerss describes it as the easiest legal way to play Vice City on current hardware. The Netflix mobile version was removed in December 2024. If you want another sunbelt-style city after that, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth uses Honolulu, but its combat is turn-based; it is not a GTA clone. Yakuza 0 is the better choice for real-time brawling and 1980s crime drama.
Are there other open-world games worth a short detour?
- Just Cause 3 or 4: choose these for destruction, wingsuit traversal and explosive experiments rather than crime-story depth.
- Far Cry 3 or 5: choose these for hostile wilderness, outposts and short combat loops.
- L.A. Noire: choose it when you want Rockstar’s detective work and period investigation rather than criminal free-roaming.
These are supporting options rather than replacements for the core shortlist because they match only one part of GTA’s appeal.

How much should you budget, and where do sales matter?
The lowest stated Steam list price among the main recommendations is Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition at $19.99. Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and Saints Row: The Third Remastered were listed at $29.99, while Mafia: Definitive Edition was $39.99. Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 were each $59.99, and Watch Dogs 2 was $49.99 at list price.
Sale timing changes the ranking. WillyB’s 2026 figures, reported by Insider Gaming, recorded Watch Dogs 2 at about £2.49 during a 95-percent sale, and xGamerss notes that Sleeping Dogs and Watch Dogs 2 often sell for a few dollars. Treat those as examples of sale depth, not permanent prices. Physical editions of Red Dead Redemption 2, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, Grand Theft Auto V, Watch Dogs 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition were still listed by retailers in October 2026, but no live US street price is established here.
Which games support co-op?
For a shared weekend, Saints Row: The Third Remastered offers campaign co-op, Watch Dogs 2 offers online co-op, and GTA Online remains available through Grand Theft Auto V. The single-player campaigns of Red Dead Redemption 2, Sleeping Dogs, both Mafia games and Cyberpunk 2077 are the reason to choose them, not a co-op mode.

Rockstar’s live GTA VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and no PC SKU or release date has been announced. Do not buy a PC version based on an unverified listing or a guessed timetable.
Does buying GTA V include GTA Online?
Take-Two’s 2026 filing describes Grand Theft Auto V as including access to GTA Online. Online is a separate ongoing mode from the roughly 32-hour single-player story, so it can provide repeatable sessions after the campaign.
Is Vice City – The Definitive Edition the same city as GTA 6?
It revisits the earlier fictional Vice City from the 1986 setting, while GTA VI expands the setting to the state of Leonida. The older game is useful for historical context, but its 2021 Trilogy release had a troubled launch and is not a technical preview of GTA VI.
What if I only have two or three evenings before launch?
