Best PC Game Launchers of 2026: The Top 5 Picks

Steam is the best overall PC game launcher in 2026, while PC Game Pass, GOG, Epic, and Playnite are better for subscriptions, DRM-free ownership, free games, and library consolidation.

Steam is the best overall PC game launcher in 2026, thanks to its broad catalog, mature library tools, mod support, community features, controller support, and strong compatibility with gaming PCs and handhelds. But it is not the best choice for everyone: PC Game Pass offers the strongest subscription value, GOG is the better ownership option for DRM-free games, Epic Games Store is worth keeping for free games, and Playnite is the best way to organize a fragmented collection.

These launchers do not all solve the same problem. Steam, GOG, Epic, and Xbox are storefront or subscription clients; Playnite is a library manager. You may also need publisher-specific clients such as Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, or the EA app for particular games.

Quick comparison

Rank Launcher Best for Type Ownership model Main drawback
1 Steam Best overall Storefront and client Buy games individually Some games require additional publisher launchers or DRM
2 Xbox PC app PC Game Pass value Subscription and storefront client Subscription access or individual purchases Catalog churn and third-party launcher exceptions
3 GOG Galaxy DRM-free ownership and classic games Storefront client and library aggregator Buy games; DRM-free installers where supported Not every game or online feature is DRM-free
4 Epic Games Store Free games and selected exclusives Storefront and client Buy games individually Less useful as a universal library than Steam
5 Playnite Combining multiple libraries Library manager and front end Does not sell games Original launchers may still be required

How to choose a PC game launcher

A launcher can handle account authentication, purchasing, installation, patching, cloud saves, achievements, social features, DRM, mod support, or library discovery. “Launcher” is therefore an umbrella term for several different products:

  • Storefront clients: Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG Galaxy let you buy, install, and manage games.
  • Subscription clients: The Xbox PC app provides access to PC Game Pass and related Xbox services.
  • Publisher clients: Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, and the EA app primarily support one publisher’s games.
  • Library managers: Playnite and some GOG Galaxy features bring games from several sources into one interface.

For this ranking, the important criteria are catalog breadth, access and ownership terms, client quality, cloud and mod features, price and value, external-library support, and compatibility. A combined library is not the same as combined ownership: buying a game through one store normally does not transfer its license to another.

1. Steam — Best overall

Steam remains the safest default for most Windows PC gamers. It combines one of the broadest and most established PC catalogs with mature library search, community hubs, reviews, achievements, cloud saves where supported, controller configuration, Remote Play, Steam Link, Big Picture mode, and extensive hardware integration.

Why Steam wins

  • Broad coverage: Steam is a dependable home for major releases, indie games, early-access projects, older titles, free-to-play games, and niche PC software.
  • Strong discovery tools: Reviews, forums, guides, workshop content, community fixes, and playtime information can make troubleshooting and choosing a game easier.
  • Mod support: Steam Workshop makes installing supported mods straightforward, although individual games vary greatly in how well they support mods.
  • Good controller and handheld support: Steam Input, Big Picture mode, and the Steam Deck ecosystem make it particularly flexible on TVs and portable PCs.
  • Useful remote features: Remote Play and Steam Link can stream compatible games to supported devices, subject to network quality and game-specific limitations.
  • Established account ecosystem: A large existing PC library, friend list, achievement history, and cloud-enabled saves are practical reasons to stay with Steam.

Steam’s refund policy can also be useful, but eligibility depends on the product, purchase conditions, playtime, and applicable region. Check the current Steam terms for the specific transaction rather than treating refunds as universal.

Steam’s drawbacks

Steam is not a blanket guarantee of DRM-free ownership or permanent offline access. Some games use Steam DRM, publisher DRM, online checks, anti-cheat, or a second client. A game bought on Steam may still open the EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, or another publisher service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud saves are also game-specific. Before reinstalling Windows, moving between computers, or changing a heavily modded installation, make a manual backup of important save files. Steam’s library organization is powerful, but it does not eliminate the account and DRM requirements imposed by individual games.

Choose Steam if: you are new to PC gaming, want one reliable default storefront, play mod-heavy games, use controllers or handhelds, or want the broadest range of PC-focused community tools.

2. Xbox PC app — Best for PC Game Pass value

The Xbox PC app is the Windows client, while PC Game Pass is the subscription service accessed through it. That distinction matters: the app is software, but Game Pass is a changing catalog of subscription access.

Microsoft’s US listing currently shows PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month. Prices, taxes, promotions, plan details, and availability vary by region and can change. The plan includes day-one games, EA Play access, and member discounts on selected games, according to Microsoft’s current listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why PC Game Pass is such good value

  • Low-cost sampling: It is a strong fit for players who try many games rather than buying every title individually.
  • Day-one releases: Eligible Microsoft first-party PC releases can be available through the service on launch, although availability depends on the title, plan, platform, region, and timing.
  • EA Play inclusion: The listed plan includes EA Play access, subject to the terms and catalog shown for the service.
  • Integrated discovery: Microsoft presents Xbox, Game Pass, installed games, and games from other PC storefronts in a combined PC library experience.

The current Xbox PC app requirements include Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, at least 150MB of storage for the app, and a 720p display. Individual games have their own hardware requirements, and Windows S mode may need to be switched off. See Microsoft’s current requirements before installing.

The subscription trade-off

Game Pass is access, not ownership. A downloaded game may stop working when the subscription ends or when the title leaves the catalog. Microsoft also notes that catalog availability changes by region, plan, platform, and time. Some PC titles require third-party launchers or Battle.net and may be excluded from particular Game Pass features or access conditions.

The Xbox app’s combined library is useful for discovery and launching, but it does not turn every external game into an Xbox-owned game. The original store or publisher account may still handle authentication, downloads, updates, achievements, saves, or multiplayer.

Choose the Xbox PC app if: you play many different games, want day-one Microsoft releases, already use Xbox services, or prefer paying monthly for access. Buy individual games instead if you intend to play only one or two titles for years and want permanent access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. GOG Galaxy — Best for DRM-free ownership

GOG.com is the store and ownership ecosystem; GOG Galaxy is its optional client. The distinction is important because many GOG purchases can be downloaded as offline installers without requiring Galaxy to remain open.

Why GOG is different

  • DRM-free options: Many GOG games are distributed without traditional copy-protection requirements, allowing offline installers where the individual game supports that model.
  • Classic PC catalog: GOG specializes in older games and often provides compatibility fixes, patches, or configuration improvements for modern systems.
  • Optional client use: Galaxy can simplify installation and updates, but it is not always required for installing or playing a purchased game.
  • Library aggregation: Galaxy can connect accounts from other services and display external games in one interface.
  • Client features: GOG’s developer documentation describes features including cloud saves and chat for Galaxy users, where supported.

GOG is the strongest choice here for readers who care about offline installers and a less account-dependent ownership model. It is also attractive for classic-game collectors who want a curated alternative to modern storefronts.

What DRM-free does not promise

DRM-free does not mean that every game works indefinitely in every environment or that every feature works offline. Online multiplayer still depends on servers and game-specific services. Anti-cheat, compatibility problems, missing community servers, mods, and unsupported operating systems can affect a title even when its installer has no DRM.

Galaxy’s external-library connections also do not transfer ownership. An imported Steam or Epic game remains governed by that original service, including its license, updates, achievements, and launch requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose GOG if: you want DRM-free installers where available, collect classic games, prefer optional-client ownership, or want a secondary library aggregator. It is not a complete replacement for Steam’s modern multiplayer, mod, and community ecosystem.

4. Epic Games Store — Best for free games

Epic Games Store is worth installing for its free-game promotions, Epic-published releases, selected exclusives, and occasional discounts. It is best understood as a useful secondary storefront rather than an automatic replacement for Steam.

Why Epic belongs on a Windows PC

  • Free-game claims: Promotional giveaways can build a substantial library without buying each title.
  • Epic-owned games: Some Epic releases and services make the store an important part of the company’s PC ecosystem.
  • Promotional discounts: Sales and coupons may make specific games attractive, although the best price depends on the title, edition, region, and promotion.
  • Cross-platform ecosystem: An Epic account can connect with supported games and services across platforms, subject to each title’s rules.

Epic’s biggest advantage is strategic: installing it can be worthwhile even if Steam remains your main launcher. Claiming a free game does not require moving your established Steam collection.

  • NEXT-GEN BLACKWELL ARCHITECTURE — The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering a massive generational leap in rasterization and ray tracing performance so you can experience your games the way they were meant to be played.
  • Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
  • Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
  • Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.

Why Epic is not the universal launcher

A game purchased through Steam, EA’s former Origin ecosystem, or Ubisoft Connect cannot simply be played through Epic because Epic is installed. Epic’s own support documentation confirms that games bought on other platforms remain tied to those platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Epic also does not remove publisher-client dependencies. A particular game may require a separate account, anti-cheat service, or online authentication regardless of where it was purchased. Its community, mod, and library-management strengths are also not identical to Steam’s and can vary as the client changes.

Choose Epic if: you want free games, play Epic-published titles, or find a particular release or discount there. Install it alongside Steam rather than expecting it to consolidate your whole PC collection.

5. Playnite — Best unified library launcher

Playnite solves a different problem from the other four picks. It is a free library manager and front end, not a storefront. It can organize games from multiple services, local folders, emulators, and installed locations into one searchable interface.

Why Playnite is useful

  • One library view: Steam, Epic, GOG, Xbox, EA, Ubisoft, and other integrations can be presented together, subject to the available integration and account connection.
  • Full-screen mode: It works well as a controller-friendly or couch-gaming interface.
  • Local and emulated games: Playnite can organize games that are not associated with a major storefront, including supported emulator libraries.
  • Customization: Themes, metadata, filters, categories, and extensions let users build a front end around their own collection.
  • Reduced desktop clutter: You can browse one interface instead of opening each store merely to remember where a game is located.

What Playnite cannot do

Playnite does not combine licenses, bypass DRM, replace account authentication, or create one universal save system. Launching a game may still open Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, or another original client. That client may be necessary for downloading patches, checking ownership, enabling achievements, starting multiplayer, or satisfying anti-cheat.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Integrations also vary. Metadata, playtime, achievements, login behavior, and launch reliability depend on the underlying service and the specific game. If an original client is unavailable or offline, a Playnite shortcut may fail even though the game appears in the unified library.

Choose Playnite if: you already own games across several storefronts, use a Windows handheld or TV PC, manage emulators, or care more about a single front end than a new place to buy games.

Launchers you may still need

The top five do not eliminate publisher-specific clients. Install these only when a game or service actually requires them:

Launcher Best for Why it is not a general-purpose winner
Battle.net Blizzard games and selected Activision titles Excellent for its own catalog, but narrow compared with a broad storefront
Ubisoft Connect Ubisoft games and account-linked entitlements Primarily a publisher client
EA app EA releases and EA Play Useful for EA’s catalog rather than a complete PC library
Rockstar Games Launcher Rockstar games Focused on one publisher and its account ecosystem
Riot Client League of Legends, Valorant, and other Riot games Required for Riot titles but not a conventional multi-publisher store
itch.io app Indie, experimental, freeware, and creator-driven games Excellent niche coverage, but not a complete replacement for major stores
Heroic Games Launcher Epic, GOG, and Amazon libraries, especially on Linux and handhelds Better treated as a platform-specific alternative than the default Windows choice

Which PC game launcher should you choose?

  • I’m new to PC gaming: Start with Steam.
  • I want the most games for a monthly fee: Choose the Xbox PC app with PC Game Pass.
  • I want to own DRM-free installers: Choose GOG for games that support that model.
  • I want free games: Keep Epic Games Store installed for its promotions.
  • I hate separate libraries: Add Playnite as a unified front end.
  • I mainly play Blizzard games: Use Battle.net.
  • I mainly play Ubisoft games: Use Ubisoft Connect.
  • I mainly play EA games: Use the EA app.
  • I play classic or experimental indie games: Consider GOG or itch.io.

Important limitations before you install everything

One game can involve several launchers

A Steam purchase may open a publisher client in the background. This can add startup time, create extra account-recovery requirements, cause overlay conflicts, or complicate mod loaders and cloud saves. Check the individual game’s store page and system requirements when this matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud saves are not universal

Cloud synchronization may be unsupported, limited to one storefront, delayed, or affected by conflicts. Keep manual backups before changing computers, reinstalling a client, or modifying a game heavily.

Subscriptions are not ownership

Game Pass is usually best for variety and experimentation. Buying a game outright is usually better when you intend to keep playing one title for years, need reliable offline access, or do not want to track catalog departures.

Aggregation is not replacement

GOG Galaxy, Playnite, and Xbox’s combined library can reduce browsing clutter, but they do not merge accounts or remove the original store’s DRM, patching, authentication, or multiplayer requirements.

Windows is the scope of this ranking

Linux and Steam Deck compatibility varies by launcher and by game. Native support, Proton or Wine behavior, anti-cheat, third-party authentication, and launcher updates can change independently. Do not assume every pick works equally well on SteamOS or another Linux distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final verdict

For most Windows PC gamers, install Steam first. Add PC Game Pass if you prefer sampling games and playing Microsoft releases, GOG if DRM-free ownership and classic games matter, and Epic if you want its free promotions or selected releases. Add Playnite only when you need a single front end for several existing libraries.

The best setup is rarely one launcher for everything. It is usually one main storefront plus the specialist service required by your games, with a library manager available if fragmented collections become difficult to navigate.
