Which pirate game should you choose?
For a modern solo adventure: Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced
Ubisoft’s remake follows Edward Kenway through a story set amid the conflict between Assassins and Templars. Its pirate action includes ship combat and boarding, alongside stealth and melee. Ubisoft also describes added story content and quality-of-life changes. It is a single-player game, not a crew-based multiplayer alternative.
The remake released on July 9, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, according to Ubisoft. Ubisoft says the main campaign can be played offline after a one-time download; some Animus Hub live content requires an internet connection. Do not confuse this release with the 2013 original or assume it is available on Switch.
For crews and cross-platform play: Sea of Thieves
Sea of Thieves is the stronger fit if your priority is sailing with friends, choosing your own goals, and encountering other crews. The PlayStation game page confirms solo play, crew play, and cross-platform play. Safer Seas is designed for a quieter solo or crew experience; High Seas places crews in a shared world where encounters with other players are possible.

On PC, the Steam listing describes an evolving game with seasonal features and events, and lists online co-op, online PvP, cross-platform multiplayer, and in-app purchases. These service features can change. The same Steam page showed 88% positive among 147,756 English-language reviews overall and 81% positive among 1,260 recent reviews when observed on October 4, 2026. Those are changing user-review proportions, not critic scores or measures of how every player will feel.
For Nintendo Switch: check The Rebel Collection’s edition details
Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection is the older Switch option identified in a 2019 review. The review says it includes both Black Flag and Rogue, but reported that only Black Flag was on the physical cartridge. Because that report is dated and is not a current Nintendo storefront listing, check the listing for your region and confirm whether the edition you are considering requires downloads. Neither Black Flag Resynced nor Sea of Thieves is established here as a Switch release.

How to match a pirate game to your platform and play style
- Decide whether you want a authored story or an open-ended crew sandbox. Pick Black Flag Resynced for Edward Kenway’s solo story; pick Sea of Thieves for flexible goals, voyages, and possible encounters with other crews.
- Check the exact platform and edition. Ubisoft’s platform details for Black Flag Resynced apply to the remake, not the 2013 original or Switch collection. For The Rebel Collection, check your regional Nintendo listing and whether required content is on the cartridge or needs a download.
- For older alternatives, verify current compatibility first. The cited overview establishes their genres, not up-to-date supported operating systems or storefront availability.
