For most PS4 players, the HyperX Cloud III is the best straightforward choice: its 3.5 mm cable connects directly to the DualShock 4 for game audio and chat. If you want wireless, choose a PlayStation-specific headset with a USB transmitter—most notably the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 for PlayStation. Generic Bluetooth headphones are not a reliable PS4 solution.

The best PS4 headset for most players is the HyperX Cloud III if you want the simplest, most dependable setup: plug its 3.5 mm cable into the DualShock 4 and use it for both game audio and chat. For wireless play, the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 for PlayStation is the most practical all-round candidate. The HyperX Cloud III Wireless is the battery-life pick on paper, with a manufacturer-rated runtime of up to 120 hours, but availability should be checked before buying.

PS4 compatibility matters more than a headset’s advertised PC features. Prioritize a 3.5 mm controller connection or a model that includes a USB wireless transmitter made for PlayStation. Do not assume that an ordinary Bluetooth headset will pair with a PS4: Sony’s PS4 FAQ says commercially available Bluetooth headsets are incompatible, while supported wireless headsets use a USB adapter.

Best PS4 headsets at a glance

Headset Connection PS4 support Rated battery Best for
HyperX Cloud III 3.5 mm, USB-C, USB-A Explicitly listed Not applicable Most players who want a reliable wired headset
Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 for PlayStation USB transmitter, 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.2 Explicitly listed Up to 80 hours Practical wireless game audio and chat
HyperX Cloud III Wireless USB wireless dongle Explicitly listed Up to 120 hours Longest manufacturer-rated battery life among these picks
SteelSeries Arctis Nova 4P Wireless USB-C wireless dongle Explicitly listed Up to 36 hours A lighter USB-C-dongle alternative
Logitech G PRO X Wireless 2.4 GHz LIGHTSPEED USB adapter Explicitly listed Not specified in the supplied product research A premium wireless alternative

These are compatibility-and-feature recommendations, not laboratory rankings. No independent testing was performed for this guide, so the picks should not be read as claims that one headset sounds better, has a clearer microphone, lasts longer in real use, or is more comfortable than another. Battery figures are manufacturer ratings and can vary with volume and usage.

1. HyperX Cloud III: best wired headset for PS4

The HyperX Cloud III is the easiest recommendation when you do not need wireless freedom. HyperX explicitly lists it as compatible with PS4, and the headset supports several connection options: a four-pole 3.5 mm connection, USB-C, and USB-A through the included accessories.

For PS4, the least complicated route is the 3.5 mm cable connected to the DualShock 4. That connection can carry game audio and voice chat without a wireless pairing process, extra transmitter, or battery to charge. The trade-off is that you remain physically tethered to the controller.

The headset also has 53 mm drivers, a detachable noise-cancelling microphone, and onboard volume and mute controls. Those specifications make it a flexible wired candidate, but they do not by themselves prove superior sound or microphone quality. Choose the HyperX Cloud III for PS4 when dependable compatibility and connection flexibility matter more than going wireless.

  • Why choose it: straightforward controller connection, explicit PS4 support, detachable microphone, and multiple connector options.
  • Trade-off: the controller cable can be inconvenient, particularly if you sit far from the console.
  • Check before buying: confirm that the listing is for the wired Cloud III and includes the 3.5 mm cable and the expected USB accessories.

2. Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 for PlayStation: best practical wireless pick

The Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 for PlayStation is the strongest general wireless choice in this guide because its platform support and connection method are clearly defined. Turtle Beach lists the PlayStation version as compatible with both PS4 and PS5. It uses a USB transmitter for the console, 2.4 GHz wireless for the headset connection, and also includes Bluetooth 5.2.

The headset carries a manufacturer-rated battery life of up to 80 hours and uses a flip-to-mute microphone. Turtle Beach also provides app-based EQ and microphone controls. Treat the app as an optional enhancement rather than a requirement: basic PS4 audio and chat should be based on the headset’s console connection, not on PC-style software features.

The most important buying warning is the word PlayStation. Turtle Beach sells platform-specific Stealth 600 variants, and the Xbox model is not interchangeable with the PlayStation model. The manufacturer’s replacement-transmitter documentation also identifies the PlayStation transmitter as compatible with the corresponding PlayStation headset, which reinforces that these are not generic USB dongles.

Choose a Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 PS4 listing when you want wireless audio and chat without paying for a more specialized premium model. Confirm that the package includes the PlayStation USB transmitter and that the product selector does not say Xbox.

3. HyperX Cloud III Wireless: best rated battery life

The HyperX Cloud III Wireless is the battery-life specialist. HyperX lists it as compatible with PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, and specifies a USB wireless dongle connection. Its advertised battery life is up to 120 hours, the longest rated figure among the wireless candidates covered here.

That number is a manufacturer rating, not an independently verified runtime. Actual life depends on factors such as volume and usage, and wireless headsets eventually need charging regardless of their rating. Still, a high rated capacity is useful for players who dislike frequent charging.

  • Low-Latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2 Connectivity

Availability deserves special attention. The HyperX product page observed during research showed the black-and-red SKU 77Z46AA as out of stock. That status can change, so check the current HyperX listing and retailer stock immediately before publication or purchase. If it is unavailable, the Turtle Beach model is the more straightforward wireless alternative in this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Why choose it: explicit PS4 support, USB wireless connection, and up to 120 hours of manufacturer-rated battery life.
  • Trade-off: stock may be inconsistent, and the 120-hour figure is not an independent test result.
  • Best for: players who put charging frequency ahead of having Bluetooth or other extra connection options.

4. SteelSeries Arctis Nova 4P Wireless: best USB-C-dongle alternative

The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 4P Wireless is explicitly identified by SteelSeries as compatible with PS4 and PS5. It uses a USB-C wireless dongle, provides on-headset volume and mute controls, and advertises up to 36 hours of battery life.

The model designation matters: this is the 4P PlayStation version, not simply any Arctis Nova 4 product. It is a sensible option for someone who specifically wants a compact USB-C wireless connection and does not need the longest battery rating.

Do not buy it expecting PC-style ChatMix on PS4. SteelSeries notes that PlayStation does not support ChatMix, so this guide treats the Nova 4P as a wireless USB-dongle headset rather than promising independent game-and-chat mixing through that feature.

5. Logitech G PRO X Wireless: premium wireless alternative

Logitech lists the Logitech G PRO X Wireless as compatible with PS4 and PS5 through its 2.4 GHz LIGHTSPEED USB adapter. It includes a detachable microphone and alternate ear pads, making it a reasonable premium alternative for buyers who prefer Logitech’s physical design and wireless adapter ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important limitation to the feature list. Logitech’s Blue VO!CE microphone tools and DTS Headphone:X 2.0 are PC-only through G HUB. They should not be counted as PS4 benefits. On a PS4, the relevant reasons to consider this model are its verified USB wireless connection, detachable microphone, and included physical accessories—not those PC software features.

Choose the Logitech G PRO X Wireless PS4 if you want a higher-end wireless alternative and are comfortable paying for the hardware without expecting the full PC software feature set on your console.

Which connection is safest for a PS4?

3.5 mm through the DualShock 4

A headset with a four-pole 3.5 mm plug connects directly to the controller. This is usually the simplest way to get both game audio and voice chat. It does not depend on a USB transmitter or wireless pairing, and it works across the original PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro as a controller-connected setup.

The obvious disadvantage is the cable. The controller must remain connected to the headset, and moving far from the console does not remove that limitation.

USB wireless

PS4-compatible wireless headsets normally use a dedicated USB transmitter or adapter. Sony’s setup workflow is to connect the wireless adapter to the PS4, turn on the headset, and wait for the devices to pair. This is why the Turtle Beach, HyperX, SteelSeries, and Logitech models above are safer recommendations than an unspecified “wireless gaming headset.” Their manufacturers explicitly identify the PlayStation compatibility and the required transmitter.

Do not assume that a USB connector makes every headset equally compatible. Confirm support for the exact model and platform, and check that the transmitter is included. A missing or damaged dongle can prevent a wireless headset from working even when the headset itself is in good condition.

USB wired

Some headsets can send PS4 audio and chat over USB. USB support became broadly available for many headsets through PS4 system updates, but compatibility still varies by model. A headset’s PC USB support is not enough evidence on its own; look for explicit PS4 support from the manufacturer.

Ordinary Bluetooth

Generic Bluetooth headphones are not a safe plug-and-play PS4 solution. Sony’s PS4 FAQ says commercially available Bluetooth headsets are incompatible. A headset may support Bluetooth for phones or another device while still requiring its USB transmitter for PS4 game audio and chat.

PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro: the optical-port issue

The original PS4 and PS4 Pro include an optical audio output. The slimmer 2016 PS4 removed that port. As Turtle Beach’s support documentation explains, optical-dependent headsets can therefore be affected by the console model.

For a general PS4 buying guide, controller-connected 3.5 mm headsets and USB-only wireless designs are safer than older systems that require optical audio. They avoid making the reader identify a specific console revision before discovering that the required port is missing.

If you already own an optical-dependent headset, check its manual and the exact PS4 model before buying adapters or replacement cables. An optical-to-USB or HDMI audio workaround may not preserve every feature, and it is usually less straightforward than using a headset designed for the console’s controller or USB ports.

How to set up a headset on PS4

  1. Connect the headset. Plug a wired headset into the DualShock 4, or connect the headset’s dedicated USB transmitter to the PS4 and power on the headset.
  2. Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
  3. Select Output to Headphones.
  4. Choose whether the headset receives All Audio or Chat Audio. Use All Audio for game sound and voice chat through the headset; use Chat Audio if you want game sound to remain on the TV.
  5. Check the microphone input and adjust the headset volume using its onboard controls or the PS4 audio-device settings.

PS4 has a hardware limitation worth understanding: Sony says voice chat and game audio cannot be output simultaneously to both the headset and the TV because of PS4 specifications. If selecting a headset changes what comes from the TV, that is not necessarily a fault with the headset.

What to check before you buy

  • Exact platform variant: look for “for PlayStation,” “PS4,” or explicit PS4 support. Do not substitute an Xbox variant, especially for models with platform-specific transmitters.
  • Included transmitter: wireless PS4 headsets generally need their dedicated USB adapter. Confirm it is in the box.
  • Connection fallback: a 3.5 mm option is useful if a wireless battery is empty or a transmitter fails, but not every wireless model includes one.
  • Microphone support: verify that the product includes a detachable, flip-to-mute, or otherwise PS4-compatible microphone if voice chat matters.
  • Console revision: avoid optical-only designs for a PS4 Slim unless you have confirmed a compatible workaround.
  • Feature restrictions: PC software such as Blue VO!CE, DTS Headphone:X 2.0, EQ tools, or ChatMix may be unavailable or limited on PS4.
  • Battery claims: treat “up to” figures as manufacturer ratings, not guaranteed real-world runtime.
  • Availability: check current stock, particularly for the HyperX Cloud III Wireless, whose official listing was out of stock during research.

Common PS4 headset problems and fixes

The headset has no game audio

Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and check whether the output is set to All Audio or Chat Audio as intended. For a wireless model, make sure the correct USB transmitter is connected and the headset is powered on. For a wired model, reseat the 3.5 mm plug in the controller.

Voice chat works, but game audio stays on the TV

The PS4 may be set to Chat Audio. Change Output to Headphones to All Audio if you want both game sound and chat in the headset. PS4 does not support sending both game and chat audio to the headset and TV at the same time under its stated specifications.

The wireless headset will not pair

Confirm that the USB adapter belongs to the exact headset and platform variant. A transmitter from another model or an Xbox version may not work. Reconnect the adapter, power-cycle the headset, and follow the manufacturer’s pairing procedure.

You lost the Turtle Beach transmitter

Do not buy a generic replacement dongle and assume it will work. Turtle Beach documents a model-specific replacement transmitter for the Stealth 600 Gen 3 PlayStation headset, and its compatibility is tied to the corresponding PlayStation model. Match the transmitter to the exact headset generation and platform before ordering.

Final recommendation

Buy the HyperX Cloud III if you want the lowest-friction PS4 setup and do not mind a controller cable. Buy the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 for PlayStation if you want a broadly practical wireless headset with an 80-hour rated battery. Choose the HyperX Cloud III Wireless for its 120-hour rated battery if you can find it in stock. The SteelSeries and Logitech models are credible alternatives for specific preferences, but their platform limitations should be part of the decision rather than discovered after purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best headset for PS4?

The HyperX Cloud III is the best choice for most PS4 players who want a wired headset. Its 3.5 mm connection plugs into the DualShock 4 for game audio and chat without pairing or charging. For wireless play, the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 for PlayStation is the most practical general recommendation in this guide.

Can I use any Bluetooth headset with PS4?

Sony says commercially available Bluetooth headsets are incompatible with PS4. Use a headset with a 3.5 mm controller connection or a model that includes a dedicated PS4-compatible USB wireless transmitter.

How do I make my PS4 headset play game audio?

Connect the headset, then open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones. Select All Audio for both game sound and chat, or Chat Audio if you want game sound to remain on the TV.

Do PS4 headsets work with PS4 Slim?

The PS4 Slim removed the optical audio port found on the original PS4 and PS4 Pro. A 3.5 mm controller headset or USB-compatible headset is therefore generally safer than an optical-only headset for an unspecified PS4 model.

Do PC headset features such as ChatMix and Blue VO!CE work on PS4?

No. ChatMix is not supported on PlayStation for the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 4P Wireless. Similarly, Logitech’s Blue VO!CE and DTS Headphone:X 2.0 features for the G PRO X Wireless are PC-only through G HUB.

The Bottom Line

Best overall for PS4: HyperX Cloud III for simple 3.5 mm wired audio and chat. Best wireless all-rounder: Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 for PlayStation. Whichever model you choose, confirm the exact PlayStation variant and included USB transmitter; generic Bluetooth headsets are not a dependable PS4 solution.
