“Survival RPG” can describe several very different experiences. Some games make survival a constant environmental problem: you gather materials, manage equipment, construct shelter and prepare for the next expedition. Others use the word to describe the feeling of surviving difficult fights, repeated runs or a hostile world while your character becomes stronger. The five games above cover those interpretations rather than pretending they all use the same formula.

Survival systems

Dune: Awakening has the clearest concentration of these systems. Where it differs from a traditional console survival game
The open-world and server options mean that the experience is shaped by the way you choose to play. A player seeking a tightly authored, entirely offline story should not assume that an open-world survival game will deliver the same pacing. Its vehicles and construction systems also signal a broader sandbox than a linear action RPG.

PlayStation Blog announced Sea of Remnants for PS5 on June 4, 2025. Joker Studio’s product lead describes its familiar tags as “ocean adventure RPG / simulation / survival building / turn-based strategy.” That combination makes it less of a conventional wilderness survival game and more of a voyage-management RPG.
You play an amnesiac sailor, recruit companions with specialized abilities, upgrade a ship and explore islands before returning to Orbtopia, a home city that changes according to your choices and shifting faction power. The announcement frames the structure as “This is an infinite voyage looping between death and rebirth—a journey where we row forward, tirelessly, only to return to where it all began.”
Systems to watch
- Crew composition: Recruiting specialized companions gives party-building a larger role than it has in the other alternatives.
- Ship development: Your vessel is both transport and a progression project, connecting exploration with long-term preparation.
- World-state choices: Orbtopia changes as decisions and faction influence accumulate, so returning home is part of the strategy rather than a simple inventory stop.

Saros matches the emotional promise of surviving dangerous runs and learning from failure. It does not match the documented base-building, crafting and resource-management breadth of Dune: Awakening. Think of it as the alternative for a player who wants persistent improvement and changing threats, not a substitute for an open-world survival settlement.
