Tormented Souls is the closest PS5 match for classic Resident Evil: PlayStation describes it as inspired by the series and Alone in the Dark, with a fixed-perspective approach. Alone in the Dark is another strong choice for old-school survival-horror atmosphere. Beyond those homages, the best fit depends on whether you want familiar Resident Evil itself, retro resource management, sci-fi combat, or modern psychological horror.
Which PS5 game feels most like classic Resident Evil?
Tormented Souls is the clearest match in the official descriptions. PlayStation says it draws inspiration from classic Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark, and presents a modern take on fixed-perspective action-adventure. That makes it the natural starting point if you want an outside-the-franchise game that deliberately recalls the older form. PlayStation’s Tormented Souls page

Alone in the Dark is a good alternative if atmosphere and a return to survival horror’s earlier lineage matter more than being a close Resident Evil imitation. PlayStation describes its PS5 game as an atmospheric reimagining of the 1992 title and highlights two playable characters, each with unique levels and cutscenes. PlayStation’s Alone in the Dark page
Choose by the part of Resident Evil you want
| What you want | PS5 game | Why it fits | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed-perspective, classic-style horror | Tormented Souls | Officially described as inspired by classic Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark, with a fixed-perspective approach. PlayStation | A modern game that deliberately borrows from the older form. |
| Early survival-horror atmosphere | Alone in the Dark | A PS5 reimagining of the 1992 game, with two playable character perspectives. PlayStation | An atmospheric reimagining, not a Resident Evil sequel. |
| More Resident Evil | Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3 | PlayStation announced PS5 versions of both games. PlayStation’s announcement | These are franchise entries rather than outside alternatives. |
| Slower, first-person dread | Resident Evil 7 | PlayStation describes a slower-paced, first-person direction that retains survival-horror elements. PlayStation’s announcement | The first-person perspective differs substantially from fixed-camera classics. |
| Sci-fi third-person horror | Dead Space Remake | Included as a third-person survival-horror neighbor in a games-like-Resident-Evil roundup. GamesRadar | Its space setting and combat emphasis make it an adjacent pick, not a close classic-style copy. |
| Retro sci-fi and resource management | Signalis | Recommended for old-school Resident Evil influence and resource management. GamesRadar | Its presentation and sci-fi story give it a distinct identity. |
| Modern psychological horror | Silent Hill 2 Remake | Compared with Resident Evil 2 Remake for its third-person survival-horror systems. GamesRadar | Its story, atmosphere, and horror focus differ from Resident Evil. |

Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3
If you have not played these entries, they are the most straightforward answer: PlayStation documented PS5 versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 in its June 2022 announcement. They are not substitutes that merely resemble the series; they are franchise games. The announcement establishes those PS5 versions, but does not establish current regional store availability or pricing. Read the announcement

Resident Evil 7
Choose Resident Evil 7 if you want the series’ survival-horror foundation in a different perspective. PlayStation describes it as slower-paced and first-person, with the tension of escaping danger and exploring a mansion-like setting. Jennifer Locke, Senior Producer at PlayStation, wrote: “That said, we also made sure that the game felt like a real Resident Evil game in many ways, preserving the critical survival horror element of escaping dire situations, from the ‘mansion’-like Baker house to those familiar herbs.” PlayStation announcement
How to tell whether a game will scratch the same itch
“Like Resident Evil” can mean different things. Before choosing, decide which of these qualities matters most to you; the games above share some genre ground, not identical mechanics.
Rank #2
- Thalassophobia: The first horror game set entirely underwater, where vertical exploration and environmental physics add new layers of tension. Leveraging the fear of deep waters to deliver an intense, profound, and novel horror experience.
- Narrative Exploration with Choices: Communicate with your brother Reed through a fully Spanish-voiced walkie-talkie system as you unravel the secrets hidden in the depths. Solve unique, unsettling challenges based on inquisitorial tortures to unveil the mansion's mysteries. Avoid and overcome a monstrous entity with a tragic past, trapped within the manor for centuries.
- Decisions That Shape Your Fate: Your actions matter. Choices you make influence how Alice's story unfolds and concludes.
- Languages: Voice - English, Spanish (Spain), and Catalan. Text - English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish (Spain), Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Catalan.
- Camera and controls: classic fixed perspectives, over-the-shoulder play, and first-person view create different kinds of tension.
- Resource pressure: consider whether ammunition, healing, and inventory management are central to the experience you want.
- Pacing: decide between slower dread and exploration or a stronger emphasis on action.
- Puzzles and exploration: some players want a place to investigate and unlock; others prioritize combat and forward momentum.
- Setting and tone: a haunted house, sci-fi environment, or psychological horror story can feel very different even when the genre overlaps.
- How direct the influence is: Tormented Souls is explicitly described by PlayStation as inspired by classic Resident Evil; the other non-franchise comparisons are broader editorial recommendations.
Where to start
Start with Tormented Souls for the clearest official connection to classic Resident Evil’s fixed-perspective lineage. Pick Alone in the Dark for a reimagining rooted in another early survival-horror series, or choose a Resident Evil PS5 entry if you want the real franchise rather than a neighboring take. For a different flavor of the genre, Signalis, Dead Space Remake, and Silent Hill 2 Remake are adjacent recommendations, not exact replicas.
