If the “highly rated new release” in your question is Hollow Knight: Silksong—the most plausible interpretation—then the safest PS5 follow-up list is a focused shortlist, not a fabricated ranking. PlayStation lists Silksong for PS4 and PS5 and identifies it as the sequel to Hollow Knight; critic coverage classifies it as a Metroidvania.
Four games surfaced as useful leads: Astalon: Tears of the Earth, Dead Cells, MIO: Memories in Orbit and Animal Well. Their evidence is not equally strong, so this guide separates confirmed facts from titles that still need a PS5-store check before you buy.

What this recommendation is—and is not
The title does not name the release you enjoyed. This article therefore treats Hollow Knight: Silksong as an assumption rather than an established fact. If you meant a different game, use the comparison framework below instead of treating the shortlist as a direct answer.

The available evidence supports a useful starting set, but not a defensible number-one ranking. One source names Astalon: Tears of the Earth and Dead Cells as alternatives; another describes MIO: Memories in Orbit as a Metroidvania and lists PS5 among its platforms; a PS5 genre ranking includes Animal Well. That is enough to identify games worth investigating, not enough to claim that every title is currently available in every PS5 edition or that one is objectively the closest match.

What is established about Hollow Knight: Silksong
- PlayStation’s official page covers both PS4 and PS5.
- PlayStation presents the game as the sequel to Hollow Knight.
- The official description centers on Hornet’s adventure in a new kingdom.
- Critic coverage identifies the game as a Metroidvania.
Those points explain why players searching for “a new game similar to Hollow Knight” may be looking for another exploration-driven action game with interconnected areas, gated progress and platforming. They do not, by themselves, prove that any candidate below reproduces Silksong’s exact map design, difficulty, combat feel or visual tone.
PS5 shortlist at a glance
| Game | What the available source establishes | PS5 recommendation status | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Astalon: Tears of the Earth | Named by PC Gamer in an alternatives article. | Lead only; PS5 availability was not established. | Official PS5 store page, edition, release status and current price. |
| Dead Cells | Named in the same PC Gamer alternatives article, which frames it around action and combat rather than treating it as a straightforward Metroidvania substitute. | Potential fit for players prioritising action; platform and edition still need confirmation for your region. | Current PS5 listing, included content and whether the edition you find is native PS5 or playable through another entitlement. |
| MIO: Memories in Orbit | GamesRadar describes it as a Metroidvania and lists PS5 among its platforms. | Strongest genre-and-platform lead in this set, but confirm against the official PlayStation listing. | Official PS5 store page, launch or availability date, edition and price. |
| Animal Well | Included in a PS5 Metroidvania ranking. | Promising PS5 lead; the ranking alone does not establish every detail of the current edition. | Official PS5 store page, genre description, edition and current availability. |
The table’s status labels are deliberate. A mention in an editorial list is not the same as a current PlayStation Store listing, and a platform claim in a secondary article should be checked against the publisher or store page before purchase.
The four games to investigate
Astalon: Tears of the Earth
Astalon appears in PC Gamer’s alternatives coverage. That makes it a legitimate research lead for someone moving on from Hollow Knight or Silksong, but the available material does not establish a PS5 release, a specific edition or a measurable similarity in combat, map structure or difficulty.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use it as a title to verify, not as a guaranteed PS5 recommendation. Search the official PlayStation Store for the exact name and check whether the result is explicitly marked for PS5. If no current PS5 listing appears, do not infer availability from a listing for another platform or from a retailer search result.
Dead Cells
PC Gamer also names Dead Cells, while distinguishing its action and combat appeal from a pure Metroidvania comparison. That distinction matters: a player who mainly wants responsive fighting may find the reference useful, whereas someone seeking the same kind of interconnected exploration should inspect the game’s current store description and feature set before deciding.

Do not present Dead Cells as an exact one-to-one replacement for Silksong. First confirm the PS5 listing in your region, then check which edition and included content you are actually purchasing. Store pages can separate a base game from bundles or add-on collections, so the product name alone is not enough.
MIO: Memories in Orbit
GamesRadar describes MIO: Memories in Orbit as a Metroidvania and lists PS5 among its platforms. Of the four alternatives, that is the clearest combination of genre identification and stated PS5 support in the available material.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Still, use the official PlayStation listing as the final check. Confirm that the page is for the PS5 version available in your region, note the release or availability date shown there, and compare the edition name with any retailer result. The available evidence does not establish how closely its challenge, traversal, combat or tone match Silksong, so those should be personal selection criteria rather than claims presented as facts.
Animal Well
Animal Well appears in a PS5 Metroidvania ranking. That gives it relevance to this search, but a ranking position is not a substitute for a current store record or an explanation of why its design suits a particular Silksong player.
Verify the official PS5 page, then read the current description and screenshots for the qualities you care about. Treat the ranking as a discovery signal, not proof that it is the closest match or that a specific edition is available where you live.

Choose by the qualities you actually miss
“Similar to Hollow Knight” can mean several different things. Decide which element you want to carry forward before comparing store pages.
Difficulty and challenge
Neither the supplied coverage nor the candidate mentions provide a reliable, like-for-like difficulty comparison. Look for the developer’s current description, accessibility information and player-facing options on the official listing. Avoid assuming that a game described as an alternative has the same learning curve or boss intensity.
Exploration and map structure
A Metroidvania label signals a genre relationship, but it does not specify how areas connect, how much backtracking is required or how progression is gated. If interconnected exploration is your priority, read each official description for explicit traversal and discovery language rather than relying on a listicle label.
Combat emphasis
The available coverage specifically frames Dead Cells as an action-and-combat-oriented alternative. That makes it the clearest lead if fighting is the part of Silksong you want to prioritise. It still does not establish that its combat system feels the same, so use a trial, demo or gameplay footage only when the official product page provides one.
Art and tone
No reliable source in the available material establishes a detailed art or tone comparison for the four candidates. Compare official screenshots, trailers and descriptions directly, and separate your own visual preference from a factual claim about similarity.

How to verify a PS5 recommendation before purchase
- Search the exact title on the official PlayStation Store. Use the full game name, including the subtitle in Astalon: Tears of the Earth and MIO: Memories in Orbit.
- Check the platform label. Confirm that the product page explicitly identifies PS5, rather than showing only PS4, PC or another console.
- Read the edition name. Distinguish a base game from a deluxe bundle, complete edition or add-on package.
- Check regional availability. A page or price visible in one country does not prove that the same product is sold in your PlayStation account’s region.
- Record the current price and date. Prices, discounts and availability change, so treat a displayed figure as a live snapshot rather than an evergreen recommendation.
- Match the product to your priority. Use the store description and media to decide whether you are buying for exploration, combat, challenge or atmosphere; do not infer that match from the word “alternative” alone.
Buying guidance: digital, physical and retailer listings
An official PlayStation Store listing exists for Hollow Knight: Silksong. The available evidence does not establish current Amazon stock, physical editions or prices for it, and it does not establish those details for the four alternatives either.
If you use a retailer search, the honest product phrase is “Hollow Knight: Silksong PS5 game.” Before paying, confirm the seller, marketplace, format, platform and edition. A search result can mix digital codes, physical copies, preorders and listings for a different console. Do not treat a retailer page as proof of PS5 compatibility until those fields agree with the official PlayStation information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which lead should you investigate first?
- You want the clearest genre match: Start with MIO: Memories in Orbit, because GamesRadar explicitly calls it a Metroidvania and lists PS5, then confirm both points on the official store page.
- You want an action-forward alternative: Inspect Dead Cells first, because PC Gamer’s framing highlights its action and combat appeal. Verify the current PS5 edition and included content.
- You are exploring a broader alternatives list: Check Astalon: Tears of the Earth, but treat PS5 support as unconfirmed until an official listing establishes it.
- You found the title through a PS5 genre list: Investigate Animal Well and use its official page to determine whether its documented features match your preferred kind of exploration.

Common mistakes when following a Metroidvania recommendation
Assuming the unnamed release is definitely Silksong
The wording strongly suggests Silksong, but it does not prove it. Keep the assumption visible when sharing the list with someone who may have played a different new release.
Confusing genre proximity with identical design
Calling a game a Metroidvania does not establish matching controls, map logic, boss design, progression gates or tone. Those are separate questions and need separate evidence.

Trusting an old ranking as a current store record
Editorial rankings can help discovery, but they do not guarantee that a product remains listed, has a native PS5 edition or is sold in your region. Use the official store page for the final check.
Buying the first retailer result
Retail listings can differ by format, seller and platform. Confirm every product field before purchase, especially when a game has multiple editions or console versions.
Bottom line
Assuming the release was Hollow Knight: Silksong, begin with MIO: Memories in Orbit for the clearest documented Metroidvania-and-PS5 lead, inspect Dead Cells if action is your priority, and treat Astalon: Tears of the Earth and Animal Well as promising but unconfirmed leads until their official PS5 listings and editions are verified. The best purchase is the one whose current PlayStation page matches the specific part of Silksong you want more of.
