Make the pass a personalized novelty keepsake: put the recipient’s name on a fictional flight, add an invented destination and date, export the design as a PNG or PDF, and print it at home, at a copy shop, or through a custom event-pass service. Label it clearly as a gift and “not valid for travel.” The result should feel like a game-inspired prop, never like a real airline document or an official product.
Decide what kind of pass you want
There are three practical ways to make this gift. A novelty-pass generator is quickest when you want a finished layout with editable passenger and flight-style fields. Designing the artwork yourself gives you the most control over colors, wording and imagery. A custom event-pass printer is useful when you want a professionally cut, finished physical pass or several copies.

Choose the first route if the surprise matters more than originality. Choose the second if you already have a visual idea or want to include an inside joke that a template cannot accommodate. Choose the third when the physical object—its cut, finish or punch style—is part of the present.

Passenger and occasion
- Use the recipient’s preferred name or gamer tag, provided it is obvious that the pass is a gift.
- Add a meaningful date, such as a birthday, graduation or the date of a planned gaming session.
- Include a short occasion line such as “One-way trip to the next heist” or “Admit one: Los Santos night tour.” Keep it playful rather than threatening or realistic.
Invented flight details
- Create fictional airport codes instead of copying real airline credentials. Three-letter combinations can be humorous, but avoid codes and routes that could make the prop look usable.
- Use an invented airline or travel club name that does not resemble a real carrier.
- Set an obviously playful destination, such as “Vinewood Hills,” “Blaine County,” or “Liberty City Memories.” If you use a location associated with the games, present it as a fictional fan reference, not a real itinerary.
- Replace realistic security language with a gift message, game reference or “boarding” joke.
Safety wording
Reserve a prominent area for “NOVELTY GIFT — NOT VALID FOR TRAVEL.” Repeat the idea in smaller type if the design has a detachable stub. Do not use a real booking number, barcode that could be scanned, passport information, airline logo, airport security mark or anything that suggests a genuine reservation.
Use a novelty boarding-pass generator
The MakeMyBoardingPass page describes a straightforward workflow: enter a passenger name and flight-style information, select a design, then export a PNG or PDF. Its output can be printed at home or taken to a local copy shop. The service also states that its passes are for novelty use and cannot be used for check-in or travel; it is a third-party tool, not a Rockstar product or endorsement.
- Gather your copy. Have the recipient name, fictional origin and destination, invented flight code, date, seat joke and safety notice ready before you start.
- Enter only fictional details. Treat every flight field as decoration. Avoid a real airline, real confirmation number or real passenger documentation.
- Pick a layout with room for a warning. A dramatic design is less useful if the “not valid for travel” line becomes tiny or disappears into the background.
- Apply the GTA-inspired treatment. Use your own color combination, typography choices and illustrations. A sunset gradient, neon accent, street-sign motif or fictional city seal can suggest the games without copying game files.
- Proofread at full size. Check spelling of the recipient’s name, date, destination and every small label. Read the fictional-use notice from a normal viewing distance.
- Export both formats when available. Keep the PDF for predictable page printing and the PNG for an image-based print or digital presentation. Save the original download separately from any edited copy.
Before printing, open the exported file on a second device or in a different PDF viewer. Missing fonts, clipped edges or a low-resolution preview are easier to correct before paper is used.

Design the pass yourself for more control
A self-designed pass can be simple: a long ticket-shaped canvas, a main information panel, a detachable stub and one unmistakable fictional-use notice. Start with the physical size you intend to print, then build inward from the trim edge.
Build a readable hierarchy
- Top band: Put your invented airline or “GTA fan flight” name in a large, original wordmark. Do not recreate an official game logo.
- Primary fields: Make the recipient, destination and date the largest information after the title. A gift should be understandable at a glance.
- Secondary fields: Add the fictional flight code, seat joke, gate, boarding time and a short message. Label these as fictional if they look realistic.
- Stub: Repeat the recipient name and destination, then place the novelty warning on the stub as well as the main panel.
- Decorative layer: Add original icons, geometric patterns, silhouettes or color blocks. Keep decoration behind text and away from the warning.
Use game-inspired ideas without presenting official artwork
Draw your own skyline, palm trees, road markings, controller symbols or fictional travel stamps. You can echo a broad mood—sunset colors, bold street typography or a satirical travel slogan—without copying screenshots, character art, maps, soundtrack lyrics or official marks. An original illustration also keeps the gift personal and easier to edit for another recipient.

Make the artwork print-ready
For home printing, use the file size supported by your printer and page layout. Print one test on ordinary paper before using any preferred stock. Confirm that the pass is not being automatically scaled, cropped or rotated by the print dialog. If you want a thicker feel, cardstock is an optional choice only when your printer supports the selected stock; the available guidance does not establish a universal paper weight or home-printer compatibility.

- Keep the warning, recipient name and critical graphics away from the trim edge.
- Check the exported PDF at 100% view so small text is not blurred or substituted.
- Print a test page, measure the result against your intended dimensions and correct scaling before the final copy.
- Cut with a ruler and craft knife or scissors, following the layout’s cut line. A detachable stub can be scored rather than fully cut if you want a ticket effect.
- Store the file and a spare printed copy separately in case the first one is damaged during trimming.
A local copy shop can print the PNG or PDF if your home printer cannot handle the size, color or stock. Ask the shop to preserve the document’s scale rather than “fit to page,” and show the operator the intended trim size.
Submit artwork to a custom event-pass printer
Use the printer’s current template before finishing your design. RockStar Passes documents a vendor-specific workflow in which submitted artwork matches the selected template, includes bleed and is supplied as a PDF in CMYK at 300 DPI. Its template guide says the background should extend to the bleed line while critical text and logos stay inside the safe area.

That is a requirement from this vendor, not a universal rule for every printer. A different service may specify another color profile, resolution, template, bleed or upload format. Follow the instructions attached to the product you are actually ordering.

Vendor checklist
- Download the current template for the exact pass shape and size you plan to order.
- Confirm whether the order is one-sided or two-sided and whether the back has a separate artwork area.
- Set the document to the vendor’s stated color mode and resolution. For the RockStar Passes specification, that means CMYK and 300 DPI PDF artwork.
- Extend background colors and patterns through the stated bleed line.
- Keep the recipient’s name, novelty warning and other essential elements inside the safe area.
- Review available finish, punch style, size and shape options before exporting, because these affect the physical design.
- Check the current production time, shipping, quantity and cost on the order page. The cited ordering article was modified in 2020, so its historical details should not be treated as current pricing or timing.
- Request a proof when the vendor offers one, and compare it with your original file before approving production.
Do not assume that a vendor’s template will fit a home printer or that a home-printer PDF meets the vendor’s production requirements. These are separate workflows with different tolerances.
Keep the prop unmistakably fictional
A convincing joke can still be mistaken for a real credential if it uses familiar airline language without context. Make the fictional status part of the design, not an afterthought.
- Use “novelty,” “fan gift,” “prop” or “not valid for travel” in a high-contrast location.
- Use an invented carrier, airport codes and confirmation format.
- Exclude real boarding barcodes, QR codes, passport numbers, frequent-flyer numbers and security instructions.
- Do not imitate an airline’s exact logo, ticket layout or typography.
- Do not photograph the pass in a way that presents it as a real trip document.
Put the same clarification in the gift envelope or note if the printed pass will be separated from its packaging. The recipient should understand the joke even if they only see the ticket stub.
Understand the fan-content and commercial boundary
Rockstar Games’ customer-support policy was updated January 10, 2025. It describes a limited approach to certain non-commercial fan uses, defines non-commercial activity in relation to making money through posted footage or promoting a product or service, reserves the right to remove material and says the policy is intended for occasional non-commercial in-game content by individual fans.

The same policy says it does not cover exploitation of Rockstar intellectual property for film, television or streaming distribution, music videos, advertisements, or publication in books, magazines or digital publishing. That scope is not blanket permission to produce or sell a physical GTA-branded item.
Rockstar’s legal terms reserve rights in its content and marks and describe personal use of its services as non-commercial. For a personal gift, the cautious approach is to make an original, fan-inspired design, avoid official logos and copied game artwork, and avoid describing the pass as licensed, endorsed or official. Do not list it for sale, use it to promote a service or imply that Rockstar made it. If you want to manufacture or sell such items commercially, obtain qualified rights advice and direct permission where necessary; this article is not a legal determination about a particular design.

Presentation can make a simple print feel intentional without changing the pass into a fake travel document. Put it in a plain envelope, a game-night card or a small sleeve labeled “fan-made novelty gift.” Add a short personal message explaining the fictional destination and why you chose it. If you include a detachable stub, keep it attached until the recipient opens the gift so the warning and context remain visible.

Troubleshoot the most common problems
The text is cut off
Return to the template and move critical text inward from the trim line. For a custom printer, follow its safe-area guide; for home printing, disable automatic cropping and print a test at 100% scale.
The colors look dull or different
Compare the screen design with a test print before ordering a batch. A vendor that requires CMYK may render colors differently from an RGB screen design. Do not alter the file profile without checking the printer’s instructions.
The pass looks too real
Increase the size and contrast of “NOVELTY GIFT — NOT VALID FOR TRAVEL,” replace realistic airline language with an invented fan-flight name and remove barcodes or genuine booking identifiers.
The generator output is too generic
Use the generator only for the base layout, then edit the exported file in a design application. Replace generic destination text, add an original illustration and write a message tied to the recipient’s favorite game moment.
The vendor rejects the file
Recheck the exact product template, page dimensions, bleed, safe area, color mode, resolution and PDF export settings. A file prepared for a home printer may not satisfy a pass printer’s production specification.
