Start with the PS5 Game Preset set to Performance Mode, HDR set to On When Supported, and a balanced audio profile. Then tune the game’s own graphics, sound, camera and control menus for your display, hearing needs and tolerance for fatigue. This combination favors responsive movement and readable survival cues without forcing every game into the same visual or control profile.

Recommended PS5 baseline

Use these settings as a first pass before changing individual options. They are preferences, not universal performance guarantees: each survival RPG can implement its graphics modes, HDR curve, audio mix and controls differently.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Area Starting setting Why it is a useful baseline
Game Preset Performance Mode Prioritizes smoother motion and generally quicker-feeling camera and input response when the title supports the preset.
HDR On When Supported Keeps HDR available for supported games while allowing SDR games to remain SDR.
HDR calibration Run Adjust HDR on the actual display Accounts for your television or monitor instead of relying on a generic value.
Audio Correct output device with a balanced profile Preserves environmental detail before you experiment with stronger bass or cue-focused processing.
Controller Default layout, then remap tiring or frequently used actions Lets you learn the game’s intended layout while leaving room to reduce fatigue.
Haptics and triggers Keep enabled, reduce intensity if tiring Retains useful feedback without making long sessions uncomfortable.

After applying the baseline, launch the game and inspect its own graphics menu. PS5 game presets only affect supported PS5 games; a title may offer separate frame-rate, ray-tracing, resolution, motion-blur or field-of-view choices that override or refine the system preference.

Performance Mode or Resolution Mode?

Sony defines Performance Mode as making motion smoother and Resolution Mode as providing higher graphic quality. In a survival RPG, that trade-off appears most often while panning the camera, turning quickly in combat, traversing dense terrain or aiming at a moving target.

Playstation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller - White (Renewed)
  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Choose Performance Mode when movement is the priority

  • Use it when camera judder, uneven motion or sluggish-feeling turns make exploration and combat harder to read.
  • It is usually the better first choice for third-person games with frequent camera movement, precision dodging or ranged aiming.
  • It can make input feel more immediate, but no universal frame rate or latency number is established for survival RPGs. Do not assume that every Performance option delivers the same frame rate.

Choose Resolution Mode when image detail matters more

  • Use it when you value a sharper distant landscape, denser foliage, cleaner textures or a ray-traced lighting effect more than maximum motion smoothness.
  • It can suit slower exploration, photo-focused play or a display where the resolution difference is more noticeable than the motion difference.
  • Some games combine a high-resolution output with a lower or variable frame rate; the exact behavior is title-specific.

A practical comparison test

  1. Open the game’s graphics menu and note the exact descriptions for Performance, Resolution, ray tracing and any “uncapped” or “balanced” option.
  2. Stand in a location with both nearby detail and distant objects, such as a settlement overlooking a forest or open valley.
  3. Rotate the camera slowly, then quickly. Check whether foliage, edges and shadows remain readable during movement.
  4. Repeat while sprinting, aiming and turning through a busy area. Judge control response separately from still-image sharpness.
  5. Keep the mode that makes the actions you perform most often easier to read. Recheck after major game patches because developers can change mode behavior.

Do not select Resolution simply because the output menu reports a higher number, or Performance simply because it sounds faster. The useful question is whether the title’s actual motion, detail and effects balance suits your display and play style.

HDR: configure the PS5 and the display together

HDR is not a single picture-quality switch. The result depends on the connected television or monitor, its peak brightness and tone mapping, the HDMI cable and port, and whether the game has its own HDR calibration. A display that clips highlights or lifts dark shadows can make a survival game harder to read even when HDR is technically enabled.

Set the system HDR mode

  1. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  2. Set HDR to On When Supported as the conservative starting point. This allows supported HDR games and avoids forcing SDR games through an HDR conversion.
  3. Select Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen pattern for the display you actually use. Run it again if you move the console to another television or monitor.
  4. Leave 4K, 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM behavior to the capabilities of the display and HDMI connection. Enable a feature only when both the display and the game support it.

When Always On is appropriate

Always On can convert SDR output to HDR, but it is not automatically more accurate. Use it only if you prefer the resulting picture after comparing the same SDR game or menu with On When Supported. If colors look exaggerated, blacks become gray or bright areas lose texture, return to On When Supported.

Fix 4K flicker or an unstable signal

If the picture flickers at 4K, return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and test Video Transfer Rate -1, then -2 if necessary. These options limit the output bandwidth and can stabilize a marginal HDMI chain, though they may reduce the available signal format. Also check that the cable is firmly connected, the display input supports the chosen format and any receiver or switch in the chain is rated for it.

Calibrate the game after the system

Many games provide separate HDR sliders for paper white, brightness, black level or peak luminance. Start with the game’s midpoint, then use its test pattern rather than guessing from a paused scene. Dark interiors should retain faint environmental shapes without looking gray; bright sky, fire and reflective surfaces should show texture instead of becoming a solid white patch. If the game has no calibration screen, use the PS5 Adjust HDR result and the display’s accurate or game picture mode as your reference.

Understand VRR, 120 Hz and ALLM limits

  • VRR can help a compatible display present variable frame output smoothly, but it cannot create frames the game does not render.
  • 120 Hz requires a display, HDMI path and title that support the mode. A 120 Hz television does not make every game run at 120 frames per second.
  • ALLM can switch a compatible television into a lower-latency game mode; the display may use a different name for that behavior.
  • Changing HDR, VRR or 120 Hz options can alter which graphics modes a game exposes. Recheck the title’s menu after changing system video settings.

Audio settings for footsteps, weather and dialogue

Survival games often hide information in low-level sounds: a footstep behind foliage, grass moving in wind, a distant creature, a crafting cue or a companion’s warning. A bass-heavy preset can make explosions impressive while masking precisely those details.

Choose the output device and routing

  1. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  2. Confirm that the selected output device is the television, sound system or headset you are actually using.
  3. For headphones, choose what is sent to the headphones and select the audio format your device handles correctly.
  4. Start with a balanced or standard profile. Raise volume only after confirming that the output device, chat mix and game master volume are not limiting the signal.

The exact labels can vary with the connected device. If a headset sounds unexpectedly quiet or voices disappear, verify the output destination before changing equalization.

Use EQ carefully

PS5 headphone EQ presets include Standard, Bass Boost and Shooter. Standard is the safest first test for a survival RPG because it avoids assuming that more bass or a combat-oriented curve suits the game’s mix. Bass Boost may add weight to storms, engines or creatures but can cover quiet cues. Shooter can make certain high-frequency details more apparent, yet it may sound sharp or unnatural with dialogue and music. Compare a spoken conversation, an environmental loop and a combat encounter before keeping a preset.

Try Audio Focus for obscured cues

A 2025 PlayStation Blog update describes Audio Focus presets that can make in-game character dialogue, subtle effects such as footsteps and rustling grass, and party-chat voices easier to distinguish. The available strength levels are Weak, Medium and Strong.

  1. Enable Audio Focus from the PS5 sound controls when the feature is available on your system.
  2. Begin with Weak and replay a section where dialogue or movement cues were difficult to hear.
  3. Move to Medium only if Weak does not solve the problem; use Strong when audibility is more important than a natural, unprocessed mix.
  4. Lower the game’s music or ambient slider before raising every channel. This preserves dialogue and cue headroom without making the entire soundtrack louder.

Audio Focus is an aid, not a substitute for safe listening levels or a properly fitted headset. If a game provides its own dialogue, effects and music sliders, make those adjustments before applying an aggressive system preset.

Controller layout, haptics and long-session comfort

Inventory screens, crouching, sprinting, aiming, scanning and radial menus compete for limited buttons in a survival RPG. The best layout is the one that keeps high-frequency actions reachable without forcing your thumb off the camera at the wrong moment.

Change DualSense behavior at the system level

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Controllers.
  2. Use button assignments to swap an awkward or painful action. Make a note of the change because the on-screen prompts may still show the game’s original labels.
  3. Adjust vibration intensity if repeated impacts or crafting feedback become tiring.
  4. Adjust adaptive-trigger intensity if trigger resistance makes aiming, harvesting or repeated firing uncomfortable.
  5. Keep some haptic or trigger feedback when it communicates a useful state, then reduce it rather than disabling everything immediately.

Prioritize actions in the game’s own menu

Check the title’s camera, aim sensitivity, toggle-or-hold choices and accessibility settings separately from the PS5 menu. Survival RPGs differ widely in whether sprint, crouch, aim, interact and inventory are toggles or holds, and in how their radial menus behave.

  • A gaming icon in your hands - Enjoy a comfortable, evolved design with an iconic layout and enhanced sticks. Hear higher-fidelity** sound effects through the built-in speaker in supported games.
  • Use a sprint toggle if holding the button causes hand strain during traversal; use hold if accidental sprinting is a frequent problem.
  • Choose a crouch toggle when stealth routes are long and repeated presses are uncomfortable, but keep hold if you often need to cancel crouch instantly.
  • Set camera and aim sensitivity independently. A fast exploration camera can coexist with a slower aiming speed.
  • Increase stick sensitivity only after checking the deadzone. Excessive sensitivity with a large deadzone can feel both sluggish near center and twitchy at the edge.

Save a DualSense Edge profile when available

With a DualSense Edge, save a dedicated profile containing button assignments, stick sensitivity and deadzone settings. A traversal profile might use a comfortable camera speed and sprint toggle, while a combat profile could use a more precise right-stick response. Assign the profile to a shortcut so you can recall it without rebuilding settings after every launch. Confirm the game’s prompts and pause behavior after switching profiles.

Balance immersion against battery and fatigue

Vibration and adaptive triggers add tactile information but consume power and can become tiring during repeated actions. Reduce intensity first, then disable a feature only if it still causes discomfort or distracts from play. A lower setting often preserves the distinction between an impact, a tool action and a menu confirmation without constant strong resistance.

Display and room checks that affect every setting

Before chasing a new preset, put the display in its game-appropriate picture mode and disable processing that adds avoidable delay or smearing. The exact labels differ by manufacturer, so use the mode intended for console games rather than a bright showroom profile. Sit at your normal distance and check text size, dark-scene visibility and glare at the time you usually play.

  • Clean or dim nearby light sources if reflections make dark caves unreadable.
  • Keep the display’s brightness and contrast at values that preserve both shadow detail and highlight texture; do not use a phone photo as a calibration reference.
  • Check HDMI input settings when 4K HDR, VRR or 120 Hz is missing. Some displays require an enhanced-format option per port.
  • After changing a cable, receiver, switch or input, revisit the PS5 Video Output Information screen and the game’s graphics menu.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely setting to check Action
Motion feels uneven or camera turns look juddery Game graphics mode Compare Performance and Resolution in the same scene; check whether the game has a balanced or ray-tracing option.
Picture flickers at 4K Video Transfer Rate or HDMI path Test -1, then -2; reseat the cable and verify the display input and intermediate equipment support the selected signal.
SDR game looks unnaturally bright or colorful HDR mode Use On When Supported instead of Always On and compare again.
Dark interiors hide objects HDR calibration or display tone mapping Run Adjust HDR, then redo the game’s own calibration. Avoid lifting black levels until you have ruled out glare and display mode.
Dialogue is buried under music Output routing and game mix Confirm the output device, lower music or ambience, then test Audio Focus from Weak upward.
Footsteps disappear under explosions or bass EQ profile Return to Standard, reduce bass-heavy processing and test a quieter scene before increasing volume.
Controller use causes hand fatigue Vibration, adaptive triggers or hold actions Lower intensity in Accessibility > Controllers and change tiring holds to toggles in the game menu where appropriate.
Remapping creates confusion System assignment versus game prompts Write down the change, test it in a safe area and remember that on-screen labels may retain the original layout.

Three useful starting profiles

Exploration and atmosphere

Choose Performance if camera motion distracts you; otherwise compare Resolution in a quiet landscape. Use On When Supported, run Adjust HDR, keep Standard audio and retain moderate haptics. This profile favors readable traversal without aggressively altering the game’s mix.

Stealth and environmental awareness

Keep the output device correctly selected, lower music before raising effects and test Audio Focus at Weak. Use a camera speed that lets you scan without overcorrecting, and reduce trigger resistance if repeated aiming is tiring. Recheck shadows after HDR calibration so dark cover remains visible.

Combat-heavy sessions

Start with Performance, then compare the game’s aim sensitivity and deadzone independently from the exploration camera. Shooter EQ may be worth testing, but keep Standard if it masks dialogue or makes high frequencies harsh. Use a DualSense Edge profile if you regularly switch between traversal and combat layouts.

What these settings cannot guarantee

There is no universal survival-RPG frame-rate, input-latency or image-quality statistic established for these recommendations. Results change with the game patch, graphics mode, display model, HDMI chain, audio hardware and title-specific implementation. Treat the system options as a repeatable baseline, compare modes in the game itself and keep the settings that improve the actions and cues you personally rely on most.
