For a PS5 library built around large games such as GTA 6, a 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD is the practical starting point and 4TB is the comfortable long-term choice. Choose a PCIe Gen4x4 drive rated for at least 5,500MB/s sequential reads, and treat the heatsink and assembled dimensions as part of compatibility—not optional extras. Sony supports PS5 M.2 expansion from 250GB through 8TB. An external USB drive is useful for PS4 games and archiving, but PS5 games normally must be copied to the console’s internal storage or its M.2 expansion before they can be played.
What to buy for a large PS5 game library
The best upgrade is not automatically the drive with the highest advertised speed. Every candidate must first satisfy Sony’s expansion-bay requirements:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Capacity: 250GB to 8TB is supported.
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe.
- Sequential read speed: Sony recommends 5,500MB/s or faster.
- Thermal solution: the SSD needs a compatible heat-dissipation mechanism, either pre-installed or added separately.
- Physical fit: the SSD and heatsink together must stay within Sony’s maximum width, length and thickness limits for the expansion bay.
For most players, 2TB is the value baseline: it adds room for several large releases without the cost of the biggest drives. Choose 4TB if you regularly keep a broad installed library, share the console, or want to avoid moving games back and forth. Sony documents 8TB as the maximum, but the largest capacity can cost substantially more and is best reserved for buyers who truly need that headroom.

| Option | What the manufacturer documentation establishes | Capacity information | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD for PS5 | Western Digital describes it as an officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles. | 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB versions are listed. | Price, stock, the exact capacity and the assembled SSD-plus-heatsink dimensions for your regional SKU. |
| SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P SSD for PS5 | SanDisk presents it as a PS5 storage-expansion product with a heatsink designed around PS5 airflow. | Not stated in the supplied manufacturer description; check the offered SKU. | Exact capacity, read-speed rating, warranty and total installed height and width. |
| Bare PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe SSD plus a PS5-compatible heatsink | Can meet Sony’s specification when the drive and heatsink are selected as one compatible assembly. | Any supported capacity from 250GB to 8TB, subject to the drive model. | Read speed, controller and NAND specifications, heatsink thickness, width, mounting method and warranty impact. |
A pre-fitted heatsink reduces assembly work, but it does not remove the need to check dimensions. A bare drive can be less expensive or offer more model choice; it also makes the heatsink purchase and fit your responsibility.
Is a 2TB or 4TB PS5 SSD better?
| Capacity | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1TB | Small libraries or a modest expansion budget. | Lower upfront cost and enough space for a limited selection of large games. | Large releases, patches and media can consume the available space quickly. |
| 2TB | Most players who want a sensible upgrade. | Strong balance of capacity and price; suitable for a growing collection of large games. | May require archiving or deleting games if you keep many major releases installed simultaneously. |
| 4TB | Players with a large, frequently used library or multiple users. | Much more breathing room for games, updates and future releases; fewer transfers. | Higher purchase price and no guarantee that every advertised SKU is available in every region. |
| 8TB | Maximum-capacity users who want to minimize storage management. | Largest capacity Sony documents for the PS5 M.2 slot. | Usually the most expensive route; confirm the exact model, heatsink and current stock before committing. |
Use usable capacity rather than the headline number when comparing prices. The console reserves a portion of storage for system operation, so a “2TB” or “4TB” drive will not present that entire number as free game space.
Why the heatsink and dimensions matter
An M.2 SSD generates heat during sustained reads and writes. Sony’s guidance requires a heat-dissipation mechanism and specifies maximum expansion-bay dimensions for the complete assembly. That means the relevant measurement is not the bare circuit board alone: include the heatsink, thermal pad and any attached hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Confirm the SSD is the correct M.2 form factor for the PS5 bay.
- Check total width, length and thickness against Sony’s current M.2 installation guide.
- Do not assume a tall desktop heatsink will fit because the underlying SSD is compatible.
- If a heatsink is sold separately, verify that it is designed for the PS5’s clearance and airflow rather than a generic PC-only enclosure.
- Keep the thermal pad aligned with the controller and NAND components as directed by the heatsink maker.
A drive that is electrically suitable but too thick cannot be made compatible by forcing the cover closed. If the cover does not seat normally, remove the assembly and recheck the heatsink and mounting hardware.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
How much space should you plan for GTA 6?
GTA VI is listed for PlayStation 5 by Rockstar’s support information, and the PlayStation Store identifies a PS5 version. The cited official listings do not publish an installation-size figure. Any precise “GTA 6 will require X GB” number circulating before an official listing states it is an estimate, not a confirmed requirement.
The useful planning decision is therefore capacity for a large-game library, not a guessed GTA VI download size. Leave free space for launch updates, patches and temporary installation files. A 2TB expansion gives a reasonable buffer for players who rotate games; 4TB is more suitable if you want major open-world games permanently installed alongside multiplayer titles and their updates.
Internal M.2 expansion versus external USB storage
| Storage path | PS5 games | PS4 games | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console internal storage | Can install and play. | Can install and play. | Games you are actively playing. |
| PS5-compatible M.2 SSD | Can install and play. | Can install and play. | Permanent expansion for a large mixed library. |
| External USB storage | Generally must be copied back to console or M.2 storage before playing. | Can be used for installed games, subject to PlayStation’s USB-storage requirements. | PS4 storage, archiving PS5 games and moving large installs between storage locations. |
PlayStation’s storage-solutions guidance treats USB storage as complementary to M.2 expansion. An external drive is not an equivalent substitute for an internal M.2 SSD when your goal is to launch PS5 games directly.
How to compare two PS5-compatible SSDs
1. Start with the complete compatibility specification
Filter out any drive that is not PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, falls below Sony’s recommended 5,500MB/s sequential-read speed, or cannot be installed within the expansion-bay limits with its heatsink attached. Compatibility comes before benchmark claims.

2. Compare capacity against your actual habits
Count the games you keep installed rather than the games you own digitally. If you frequently uninstall finished campaigns, 2TB is usually enough. If you maintain a large rotation of open-world, sports, live-service and multiplayer games, 4TB reduces housekeeping.
3. Check sustained performance and warranty details
Advertised peak read speed is not a promise that one compatible drive will make games load faster than another in every situation. Without independent testing under the same PS5 conditions, do not claim that a third-party drive is faster than Sony’s built-in SSD. Compare the manufacturer’s rated speed, warranty terms and support process instead.
4. Calculate price per usable terabyte
Divide the purchase price by the advertised capacity, then remember that formatted capacity is lower. A discounted 4TB model can offer better value than buying two smaller drives, but the M.2 expansion slot accepts one installed drive at a time; you cannot combine multiple internal M.2 drives into one pool.

PS5 M.2 SSD installation: step-by-step
Before opening the console, shut it down completely and gather a compatible drive, its heatsink if needed, and a precision Phillips screwdriver set. Follow the console model’s current PlayStation instructions; the cover and slot-cover removal motion differs by chassis.
- Power down the PS5. Turn the console off rather than leaving it in Rest Mode, then disconnect the power and other cables. Allow it to cool before handling the expansion bay.
- Remove the console cover. Place the console on a stable, protected surface and remove the cover according to PlayStation’s M.2 guide for your model.
- Remove the expansion-slot cover. This exposes the M.2 bay and its mounting point.
- Prepare the SSD assembly. If the drive is bare, install the compatible low-profile heatsink and thermal pad exactly as specified by the heatsink manufacturer. Recheck the assembled width, length and thickness.
- Insert the M.2 drive. Align the connector, insert the drive at the required angle, then lower it into position. Do not force the connector.
- Secure it with the supplied screw. Use the PS5’s spacer and screw position appropriate to the drive length, and tighten only enough to hold the SSD flat and secure.
- Replace the expansion-slot cover and console cover. Both covers should sit flush without pressure. If they do not, stop and inspect the heatsink or screw placement.
- Reconnect and start the PS5. On first use, the console prompts you to format the M.2 SSD. Formatting erases the drive, so do not install it with data you need to keep.
- Choose the storage location. In the PS5 storage settings, select the M.2 SSD as the installation destination when you want new compatible games to use the expansion drive.
Game licenses remain tied to your account, not to the old storage location. If a game was moved or deleted during installation, download or copy it again after the M.2 drive is formatted.

The PS5 does not detect the SSD
- Power the console off and reseat the drive in the connector.
- Check that the retaining screw and spacer are positioned for the SSD’s length.
- Verify the drive is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe and meets the 5,500MB/s recommended read rating.
- Inspect the heatsink for a mounting problem that prevents the SSD from lying flat.
The cover will not close or sits unevenly
The assembly is probably outside the permitted thickness or is not seated correctly. Remove it, measure the complete SSD-plus-heatsink assembly against Sony’s limits, and reinstall without forcing the cover.

A PS5 game on a USB drive will not launch
That behavior is expected for most PS5 titles. Move or copy the game to console storage or the installed M.2 SSD, then launch it from there. Keep the USB drive for PS4 games and archived PS5 installs.
A game update reports insufficient space
Large patches can require temporary free space in addition to the final game size. Delete or archive an unused title, or move an install between internal, M.2 and USB storage before retrying the update.
Recommended buying checklist
- Capacity: choose 2TB for value, 4TB for convenience, or 8TB only when maximum capacity justifies the cost.
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe.
- Read rating: at least Sony’s recommended 5,500MB/s sequential speed.
- Heatsink: included or purchased separately, with total dimensions inside Sony’s limits.
- Warranty: confirm the duration and regional support before ordering.
- Price: compare price per advertised terabyte, then account for formatted capacity and any separate heatsink cost.
- Seller and SKU: verify the exact capacity, model revision and return policy.
- Installation tools: keep a precision Phillips screwdriver available.
Bottom line for a GTA 6-ready PS5
Buy a PS5-compatible 2TB PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe SSD with a correctly sized heatsink if you want the strongest balance of cost and capacity. Step up to 4TB when you keep many large games installed or want fewer transfers. The WD_BLACK SN850P is documented in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities as an officially licensed PS5 M.2 option; the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P is another PS5-focused product whose exact SKU specifications should be checked before purchase. Sony’s 8TB limit is real, but no official GTA VI listing cited here gives an install-size number, so size the upgrade for your whole library and leave patch space rather than buying around an unverified estimate.
