For most PS5 owners, the best expansion drive is a 2TB PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD with a PS5-compatible heatsink. The WD_BLACK SN850X is the strongest all-round choice when the exact heatsink configuration fits your console. The Samsung 990 Pro is a premium alternative, while the officially licensed WD_BLACK SN850P is the easiest low-risk installation. Value alternatives include the Crucial T500, Kingston Fury Renegade, and Lexar NM790—but compatibility must be checked by exact SKU, capacity, and heatsink dimensions.

Quick recommendations

Best for Recommended direction Main trade-off
Most players WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB with a compliant heatsink Bare versions need a separately verified cooler
Premium PC crossover Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink Higher price, with little extra PS5 benefit from headline speed
Easiest installation WD_BLACK SN850P Official licensing and purpose-built cooling can cost more
Endurance-focused buyers Seagate FireCuda 530 or 530R with heatsink Often poor value if substantially more expensive
Value hunting Crucial T500, Kingston Fury Renegade, or Lexar NM790 with verified cooling Check the exact revision and heatsink dimensions
Archive storage External USB drive PS5 games must be copied back before they can be played

Recommendations are based on compatibility, cooling, capacity, warranty, and value—not simply the highest advertised PC benchmark.

What makes an SSD compatible with PS5?

Sony’s expansion slot accepts an M.2 NVMe SSD using PCIe Gen4 x4. The drive should have a recommended sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s, although Sony does not guarantee that every drive meeting the published specifications will perform identically to the console’s internal storage.

“M.2” describes the physical card format, not the protocol. An M.2 SATA SSD is not the same as an M.2 NVMe SSD and is not supported. PCIe Gen3 drives are generally unsuitable because they usually cannot meet Sony’s recommended speed. PCIe Gen5 is unnecessary for PS5, typically costs more, and may introduce additional cooling and fit considerations.

#1 Best Overall
WD_BLACK 1TB SN850P NVMe M.2 SSD Officially Licensed Storage Expansion for PS5 Consoles, up to 7,300MB/s, with heatsink - WDBBYV0010BNC-WRSN
  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Sony’s full requirements are listed on its official PS5 M.2 SSD installation page.

Requirement PS5 specification
Interface PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, M-key
Supported lengths M.2 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110
Capacity 250GB to 8TB
Recommended read speed 5,500MB/s or faster
Maximum width 25mm
Maximum total thickness 11.25mm
Maximum thickness above the board 8.0mm
Maximum thickness below the board 2.45mm

The drive must also have effective heat dissipation. A heatsink and thermal transfer sheet can be integrated into the SSD or purchased separately. The assembled SSD—not just the bare circuit board—must fit within Sony’s limits.

The heatsink is usually the real fit problem

A bare M.2 2280 drive may fit perfectly while an oversized aftermarket cooler prevents the slot cover from closing. Sony supports single-sided and double-sided SSDs, but says single-sided cooling structures are easier to install. Do not add a second heatsink to a drive that already has one; Sony warns that doing so can reduce cooling effectiveness.

Be especially careful with large heatsinks that replace the M.2 bay cover. Some can fit the original PS5 but interfere with the cover or internal clearance of the PS5 Slim. Verify the complete assembled dimensions for your specific console model.

Best PS5 SSDs

WD_BLACK SN850X: best overall

The WD_BLACK SN850X is the best default recommendation for most buyers. It is a fast PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive available in several capacities, works well for PS5 gaming and future PC use, and is commonly sold both bare and with a heatsink.

Buy the version with a PS5-compatible heatsink, or budget for a separate cooler whose assembled dimensions comply with Sony’s limits. Do not assume every SN850X package includes a suitable heatsink. Tom’s Hardware currently ranks the SN850X highly among PS5 options and describes the SN850P as essentially a licensed, heatsink-equipped relative of the same platform.

Buy it if: you want the best balance of performance, capacity choice, and price. Avoid it if: the listing does not clearly identify the exact capacity and heatsink configuration.

Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink: best premium alternative

The Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink is a premium PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 2.0 option. The cited comparison lists sequential read speeds of up to 7,450MB/s, sequential writes up to 6,900MB/s, a five-year warranty, and 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities.

It is a good choice if the SSD may later move into a PC or if you value Samsung’s support ecosystem. However, its higher PC speed does not normally produce proportionally faster PS5 game loading than other good Gen4 drives. Choose the heatsink model unless you have separately verified a PS5-compatible cooler.

WD_BLACK SN850P: easiest officially licensed option

The WD_BLACK SN850P is officially licensed for PS5 and includes a purpose-built heatsink. The 4TB PlayStation Direct listing specifies up to 7,300MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write performance; the PlayStation storage catalog lists capacities up to 8TB, subject to regional availability and stock.

This is the simplest choice for buyers who want PS5-specific packaging and minimal compatibility anxiety. The downside is price. Official licensing is a convenience and selection aid, not a technical requirement: a non-licensed SSD can be equally compatible when it meets Sony’s interface, speed, capacity, cooling, and dimension requirements.

Seagate FireCuda 530 or 530R: for endurance-focused buyers

The Seagate FireCuda 530 and 530R are PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe drives available in PS5-compatible heatsink configurations. Seagate provides dedicated guidance for installing the drives in PS5 consoles, making them appealing to buyers who value sustained-performance positioning, endurance ratings, and manufacturer support.

Do not treat higher PC benchmark numbers as proof of faster PS5 loading. One secondary review measured a FireCuda 530R at approximately 6,030MB/s in the PS5’s own storage benchmark; that is above Sony’s recommendation, but it is a test result for a particular configuration rather than a universal performance guarantee.

Crucial T500, Kingston Fury Renegade, and Lexar NM790: value alternatives

The Crucial T500, Kingston Fury Renegade, and Lexar NM790 are sensible alternatives when their total cost is lower than the leading choices.

Check the exact capacity, firmware, warranty, heatsink version, and assembled dimensions. Product families can contain multiple revisions and configurations. A product name alone is not proof that every SKU is suitable for PS5.

How much PS5 SSD storage do you need?

  • 1TB: Suitable for a smaller library or the lowest upfront cost. Usable space will be lower after formatting and system overhead.
  • 2TB: The best default for most players. It adds meaningful room without the usual price premium of very large drives.
  • 4TB: Better for large digital libraries, frequent downloads, or multiple users sharing one console.
  • 8TB: Sony’s maximum listed capacity. Buy it only when the price per usable terabyte is attractive and the exact model is available in your region.

Game installation sizes vary too widely to promise a fixed number of games. Even the “up to 100 games” claim on a 4TB PlayStation Direct listing is a marketing estimate, not a universal capacity calculation.

PS5, PS5 Slim, and PS5 Pro compatibility

The core M.2 requirements apply across the relevant PS5 model groups, but the exterior-cover removal procedure differs. Sony separates its instructions for the original CFI-1000 group and newer CFI-2000/7000 groups. Follow the instructions for your console’s model number rather than relying on a generic video.

PS5 Slim models are particularly important when choosing a heatsink. A large cooler designed to replace the original M.2 bay cover may not fit the Slim’s cover or clearance. Do not assume a heatsink that fits an original PS5 will fit every newer model. No separate SSD specification should be inferred for PS5 Pro unless Sony publishes one; verify the current model-specific installation documentation.

What an internal M.2 SSD can do

An installed M.2 SSD can store and launch PS5 and PS4 games, download games directly, store media applications, and hold games moved from the console’s internal storage or USB storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PS5 games on an external USB drive cannot be played directly from that drive; they must be copied back to internal storage or the M.2 SSD first. Also, one game’s data cannot be split between storage locations. All files for a particular game must reside in one location.

How to install an M.2 SSD in a PS5

  1. Update the PS5 system software.
  2. Shut the console down completely. Do not use Rest Mode.
  3. Disconnect the cables and let the console cool.
  4. Work on a clean, well-lit surface and touch grounded metal to reduce static risk.
  5. Remove the appropriate outer cover for your CFI model.
  6. Remove the M.2 expansion-slot cover.
  7. Remove the spacer screw and position the spacer for the SSD’s length.
  8. Insert the SSD diagonally into the M.2 connector.
  9. Press the drive down and secure it with the supplied screw.
  10. Refit the expansion-slot cover and console cover.
  11. Reconnect the console and power it on.
  12. Follow the on-screen instruction to format the SSD.
  13. Check it under Settings > Storage > M.2 SSD Storage.
  14. Move games through Game Library > highlight the game > Options > Move Games and Apps.

Formatting is required the first time the SSD is used and erases data on the drive. Sony requires the entire M.2 SSD to be formatted for PS5 use; it cannot be divided into a separate PC partition during setup.

Troubleshooting an undetected or problematic drive

  • Not detected: Confirm that the drive is NVMe rather than SATA and that it is PCIe Gen4 x4.
  • Loose or missing drive: Power down completely, then check that the SSD is fully inserted and secured with the correct screw.
  • Wrong length: Confirm that the spacer is positioned for the drive’s actual length.
  • Cover will not close: Remove an extra heatsink layer and recheck total, above-board, and below-board thickness.
  • Heatsink interferes with the screw: Use a cooler designed for the PS5 bay and verify its complete dimensions.
  • Performance is lower than expected: Sony warns that HMB-equipped SSDs may perform worse because PS5 does not support Host Memory Buffer. Advertised PC sequential speed is not the same as a PS5 result.
  • A game behaves unusually: Move that game to the console’s internal SSD and test again. Sony recommends this troubleshooting step for gameplay issues.

Internal M.2 SSD versus external USB storage

Choose an internal M.2 SSD if you want to keep PS5 games installed and playable immediately. Choose external USB storage if you mainly want inexpensive bulk storage, PS4 games you can play directly, backups, or PS5 games that you do not mind copying back before playing.

An external drive can be the better value for a PS4-heavy library or an archive. It is not a direct substitute for an internal M.2 upgrade for active PS5 games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final buying checklist

  • PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, M-key.
  • 250GB–8TB capacity.
  • Recommended sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s.
  • M.2 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110 form factor.
  • Effective cooling included or purchased separately.
  • Maximum width of 25mm.
  • Maximum total thickness of 11.25mm.
  • Above-board and underside thickness within Sony’s limits.
  • Exact heatsink configuration verified for your PS5 model.
  • Warranty, TBW rating, firmware support, and update requirements checked for the exact SKU.

The safest purchase is not automatically the fastest drive or the one with a PlayStation logo. It is the compatible drive-and-heatsink combination offering the capacity, warranty, and total price that fit your needs. For most buyers, that means a 2TB WD_BLACK SN850X with compliant cooling; choose the SN850P for official licensing and maximum installation reassurance, or an external USB drive when you only need archive space.
