The Odyssey 3D G9 G90XF is the glasses-free 3D model. The Odyssey OLED G8 G81SF is a separate conventional 2D QD-OLED gaming monitor.
The G90XF is an IPS display with a maximum refresh rate of 165Hz—not 144Hz—and it is not OLED. The G81SF is the OLED model, with a maximum refresh rate of 240Hz. Both were part of Samsung’s 2025 Odyssey generation and are listed through Samsung’s US store, subject to inventory and location.

The naming is easy to misread. Samsung also sells much larger ultrawide Odyssey G9 displays, but the G90XF is a flat 27-inch 16:9 monitor. It should not be confused with Samsung’s separate 2026 6K 3D Odyssey G9 announcement.
Odyssey 3D G9 G90XF: the glasses-free model
The G90XF’s defining feature is glasses-free 3D. Samsung describes the monitor as using eye tracking to direct stereoscopic imagery to the viewer, allowing compatible games and video to produce a depth effect without a 3D headset or glasses.
#1 Best Overall
- HANDPICKED BY AMAZON: They did the research so you don’t have to.
- EXPERIENCE A BRIGHTER WORLD: Content springs to life in 4K QD-OLED; Brilliant imagery shines with 250 nits (typ) of brightness and a wider spectrum of colors, shades & contrasts; The NQ8 AI Gen3 Processor also upscales lower resolutions to nearly 4K
- OUTMANEUVER OPPONENTS w/ SUPREME SPEED: Dodge, counter & engage faster with QD-OLED technology, offering a near-instant 0.03ms response time (GtG); Stay ahead with HDMI 2.1 & DisplayPort connections & a 240Hz refresh rate in UHD resolution¹
- DYNAMIC COOLING SYSTEM: For the 1st time ever, a Pulsating Heat Pipe was introduced into the monitor to prevent burn-in; The Dynamic Cooling System evaporates & condenses a coolant to diffuse heat 5x better than the older graphite sheet method⁵
- THERMAL MODULATION SYSTEM: Algorithms predict surface temperature and then control the brightness accordingly, to automatically reduce heat²
Samsung also promotes 3D gaming, 2D-to-3D conversion, AI-assisted video conversion, spatial-audio features and an Odyssey 3D Hub software ecosystem. Samsung says the Hub and compatible-game information are available through its own channels and the Microsoft Store.
Core G90XF specifications
- 27-inch flat IPS panel
- 3,840 × 2,160 resolution
- Up to 165Hz refresh rate
- 1ms GtG response time
- 350 cd/m2 typical brightness
- 1,000:1 static contrast ratio
- HDR10 and HDR10+ Gaming
- 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles
The IPS panel and 165Hz ceiling are important qualifications. The G90XF is not the OLED monitor in this pair, and it is not a 144Hz model according to Samsung’s US listing or launch announcement.
What “glasses-free 3D” does—and does not—promise
Glasses-free does not mean that every game or video automatically becomes equally convincing in three dimensions. The result can depend on whether the application is supported, how well 2D content is converted, how the scene is composed, and whether eye tracking can maintain the correct viewing position.
The best results are likely to require a relatively stable seated position in front of the display. Moving too far off-axis, changing seats, or obstructing the camera or tracking system can reduce the effect. Fast camera movement, small text, HUD elements, thin lines and visual effects can also reveal weaknesses in converted content.
Samsung’s software ecosystem therefore matters as much as the panel. Buyers should check the current compatible-game list rather than assume that the entire PC library supports native or high-quality 3D. Conversion quality may also change as Samsung updates its software.
Odyssey OLED G8 G81SF: the conventional high-end choice
The G81SF is the more familiar product. It is a 27-inch 4K QD-OLED gaming monitor designed primarily for standard 2D play, with the contrast and pixel response associated with OLED technology.

It does not provide the G90XF’s glasses-free 3D feature. Its advantage is that its core benefits—deep OLED blacks, high contrast and very fast 2D gaming—do not depend on a particular game list, conversion mode or tracking zone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor competitive players, the extra refresh-rate headroom is significant on paper: 240Hz versus 165Hz. Reaching either limit at 4K still requires a powerful graphics card, and many demanding games will run below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate.
G90XF versus G81SF: which should you buy?
Choose the G90XF if 3D is the reason you are upgrading
The G90XF makes sense for early adopters, display enthusiasts and players who specifically want stereoscopic gaming without wearing glasses. It is the relevant choice if the novelty and immersion of glasses-free 3D matter more than OLED contrast or the highest possible refresh rate.
It is also the only model here with a feature ordinary OLED monitors cannot reproduce: Samsung’s integrated eye-tracked 3D presentation. The trade-off is a greater dependence on supported software, conversion quality and your seating position.
Choose the G81SF for conventional 2D gaming
The G81SF is the safer recommendation for buyers who primarily want the strongest all-purpose 27-inch 4K gaming display in this comparison. Its OLED panel should be more attractive to buyers who prioritize black levels and contrast, while its 240Hz maximum refresh rate favors competitive gaming.
It is also the better fit for someone who needs a monitor for ordinary gaming and desktop use and does not want the purchase to depend on an emerging 3D ecosystem.

- Samsung’s 27” Odyssey OLED G6 Gaming Monitor is engineered for perfection with a QD-OLED Display featuring QHD resolution made to deliver high brightness and a wide range of colors for gameplay
- OLED Safeguard technology supports performance by actively helping to prevent burn-in with a thermal modulation system
- Glare Free Technology keeps screen clear of reflection from external light sources
- The Pantone Validated screen accurately reproduces 2100+ lifelike colors and 110+ skin tone shades
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes
For single-player games, the choice is less obvious
Single-player gamers may value the G90XF’s 3D immersion, particularly if their favorite titles appear on Samsung’s supported list. But the G81SF remains the more predictable option if image contrast and consistent 2D presentation matter more than experimentation.
Hardware and software considerations
Both monitors target high-end 4K gaming. A buyer should have a graphics card capable of producing useful frame rates at 3,840 × 2,160 and use a suitable DisplayPort or HDMI connection. Exact port and cable requirements should be confirmed in the current regional manual or in-box documentation, since the headline specifications alone do not establish every port limitation.
The G90XF adds further requirements:
- Current monitor firmware and Samsung software where required
- A compatible game or video source for the best 3D results
- A seating position within the eye-tracking system’s effective range
- Enough GPU performance for the additional demands of 3D rendering or conversion
Do not assume that a 4K/165Hz or 4K/240Hz monitor will run every game at its maximum refresh rate. Enabling stereoscopic 3D can make the performance target harder to reach than ordinary 2D play.

Common problems and what they mean
3D does not activate
Check that the display is in the correct mode, the necessary Samsung software is installed and the game or media is supported. A normal 2D signal will not necessarily produce the same result as content handled through Samsung’s 3D software.
The depth effect looks weak or contains artifacts
That may reflect the source rather than a hardware fault. Converted 2D video and games can vary in depth quality, and visual artifacts may be more visible around text, HUDs, thin objects and fast movement.
Eye tracking loses the viewer
Return to a stable position directly in front of the monitor and check for obstructions. Distance, angle, lighting and movement can affect tracking performance.

Frame rates fall
4K is demanding before 3D is enabled. Reduce demanding graphics settings, use an appropriate upscaling mode where supported, or accept that the monitor’s maximum refresh rate is a ceiling rather than a guaranteed in-game frame rate.

As observed on Samsung’s US store on August 16, 2026, the G90XF carried a $1,399.99 list price, while the page displayed a $100 reduction to $1,299.99. The G81SF was listed at $1,299.99.
Those prices are date- and region-specific. Samsung’s product pages can show different delivery, pickup and promotional states depending on ZIP code, inventory and the page session. Treat the monitors as listed for sale through Samsung’s US store, not as guaranteed to ship immediately everywhere:
- Check the current Samsung US price and availability for the G90XF.
- Check the current Samsung US price and availability for the G81SF.
Samsung also lists a separate 2026 27-inch OLED G8 G80SH. That model is not the G81SF and is not the glasses-free G90XF; buyers should verify the complete model number and current regional specifications before ordering.
Bottom line
The G90XF is the monitor to consider if you specifically want Samsung’s glasses-free 3D experience and are comfortable with software compatibility, eye-tracking and conversion-quality trade-offs. It is a 27-inch 4K IPS display running at up to 165Hz.
