You need a SteamCMD-installed dedicated server, MetaMod:Source, SourceMod, L4DToolZ to raise the server-wide client limit to at least 20, and a team-management plugin such as SuperVersus to set 10 survivors and 10 infected. Then start the server in Versus mode, expose its game port, and test the exact plugin and map combination you intend to operate.
The procedure below uses the dedicated-server app ID 222860, the documented limits sv_setmax 20, sv_maxplayers 20, l4d_survivor_limit 10, and l4d_infected_limit 10. A 20-player target is the minimum for 10v10; higher values are not covered by a universal Valve guarantee.

What a 10v10 L4D2 server requires
In a 10v10 match, the server must admit 20 connected players and divide them into two teams of 10. The unmodified Versus server is built around the normal player count, so changing only a team cvar does not create a working 20-slot server. The client limit, game mode, and team limits must all agree.
- Dedicated server: SteamCMD installs the Left 4 Dead 2 server files using app ID 222860.
- MetaMod:Source: The extension layer that lets server-side plugins load.
- SourceMod: The plugin and administration framework installed after MetaMod.
- L4DToolZ: The extension that exposes the maximum-client controls, including
sv_setmaxandsv_maxplayers. - Team-management plugin: SuperVersus or a maintained equivalent that exposes survivor and infected limits. SuperVersus documents a survivor maximum of 18 and requires an extension for more than eight total players.
- Network access: The game port must be reachable through your firewall and, for a home server, your router.
Install the components in that order. MetaMod must load before SourceMod, and both must load before gameplay plugins that depend on them.
#1 Best Overall
- On day one, Left 4 Dead 2 features more co-operative campaigns, more campaigns and maps for the versus game modes than the original Left 4 Dead did, plus support for Survival Mode right out of the box.
- Left 4 Dead 2 features quality co-op action gaming from the makers of Half-life, Portal, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike.
- Updated “AI Director 2.0" technology expands players’ ability to customize level layout, world objects, weather, and lighting to reflect different times of day, creating fresh gameplay every time.
- Put a whole slew of melee weapons including axes, chainsaws, frying pans and baseball bats to use which allow you to get up close with the zombies.
- The game features four different survivors, a new storyline and new dialog.
Choose where the server will run
A home machine gives you direct control of files, plugins, configuration, RCON, and firewall rules. It also makes you responsible for port forwarding, restarts, operating-system updates, and a reliable upstream connection. A rented VPS or game-server instance generally removes the router-forwarding step, but you must confirm that the provider permits MetaMod:Source, SourceMod, L4DToolZ, 20 slots, and the game mode you need.
| Decision factor | Home-hosted server | Rented server or VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Plugin and configuration control | Full access to the installation and files | Depends on the provider and its mod policy |
| Port forwarding | Required on the router and firewall | Usually handled by the provider |
| Uptime and restarts | You must automate or perform them | Often includes restart controls or service automation |
| Latency | Depends on your household connection and location | Choose a region close to the players |
| 20-player headroom | Depends on the machine’s CPU, RAM, and tick settings | Verify the advertised resources and slot policy |
| RCON and firewall access | You control both | Access varies by host; check before ordering |
There is no reliable universal performance number for 20-player L4D2 operation. Test the hardware, map rotation, tick settings, plugin builds, and network path you will actually use.

Install the Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server with SteamCMD
- Download SteamCMD for the operating system that will run the server. Do not place the game installation inside the SteamCMD program directory.
- Create a separate server directory. Examples include
/srv/l4d2-serveron Linux orC:serversl4d2on Windows. Use a path for which the service account has read and write permission. - Start SteamCMD and select the directory with
force_install_dir. The command must point to the directory you created. - Log in anonymously with
login anonymous. - Install and validate the files with the exact command
app_update 222860 validate. The Steam Community installation guide updated in 2025 identifies 222860 as the Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated-server app ID. - Exit SteamCMD with
quit.
force_install_dir /path/to/l4d2-server
login anonymous
app_update 222860 validate
quit
Replace the path in the first line with your real directory before running it. The validation step checks the downloaded files and is useful after an interrupted update or a damaged installation.
Confirm the expected directory
After installation, the server’s game tree should contain a left4dead2 directory. Configuration files belong under left4dead2/cfg; MetaMod, SourceMod, and plugin files will add addons and usually additional configuration directories below the same game root.
Create the initial server configuration
Create left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. Keep one console variable per line. If a value contains spaces, surround that value with quotation marks. Start with the settings that define the 20-player target and the two teams.
sv_setmax 20
sv_maxplayers 20
l4d_survivor_limit 10
l4d_infected_limit 10
The first two commands come from L4DToolZ’s maximum-client controls. The latter two are the documented SuperVersus names; a maintained fork may use equivalent names, so check that fork’s configuration file if those commands are not recognized. Do not assume that a cvar accepted by one build exists in another.

Keep passwords and other secrets out of files that you intend to share. If you enable remote administration, set a long, unique RCON password in the server configuration and restrict access at the firewall where possible.
Install MetaMod:Source, SourceMod, and the extensions
- Install MetaMod:Source first. Extract its
addonsand configuration content into the server’sleft4dead2directory, preserving the folder structure. - Install SourceMod second. Copy its
addonsandcfgdirectories into the sameleft4dead2tree. Merge directories rather than placing one inside another accidentally. - Install L4DToolZ. Copy the extension files into the locations specified by the build you downloaded. Restart the server so the extension can load during startup.
- Install SuperVersus or an equivalent maintained team plugin. Copy its plugin and configuration files only after the framework is working.
- Restart, then inspect the plugin list. From the server console or an administrator console, run
sm plugins list. MetaMod and SourceMod should be active, and the team-management plugin should show as loaded rather than failed.
A failed plugin entry is a dependency problem until proven otherwise. Check that MetaMod loaded, then SourceMod, then the extension, and only then the gameplay plugin. Read the server console during startup; missing binaries, wrong operating-system builds, and files copied one directory too deep are common causes.
Raise the server-wide player limit with L4DToolZ
Install L4DToolZ before trying to fill a 10v10 lobby. Set both documented maximum-player controls to at least 20:
sv_setmax 20
sv_maxplayers 20
The 20 value is intentional: 10 survivors plus 10 infected equals 20 simultaneous clients. Setting only a team limit leaves the server-wide cap unchanged, while setting only the global cap leaves the teams at their normal limits.
After restarting, verify that the commands are recognized and retain the value. If the console reports an unknown command, L4DToolZ is not loaded, the wrong build was installed, or the extension is incompatible with the server binary. Resolve that failure before adding more plugins.
Set survivor and infected limits
Configure the team-management plugin for ten players on each side:
Rank #3
- Co-operative gameplay in epic struggle between survivors and zombies
- Choose to play as survivor or 4 types of infected mutants
- Set across 4 massive campaigns
- Game creates a unique and dramatic experience based on players' actions
- Multiplayer games for 1-to-8 players
l4d_survivor_limit 10
l4d_infected_limit 10
SuperVersus documentation lists a maximum survivor setting of 18, so a limit of 10 is within its stated range. It also explicitly warns that the plugin alone will not allow more than eight players; an extension such as L4DToolZ is required. This is why installing the team plugin without first expanding the server’s client limit produces an incomplete setup.
Check how the plugin applies limits
Some builds read the cvars at map start, while others apply them when the plugin loads. Restart after changing the values, then change maps once before inviting a full lobby. If one team remains capped at the normal count, inspect the plugin’s own configuration and log output rather than repeatedly changing the stock game cvars.

Start the server explicitly in Versus mode
A 10v10 configuration can appear to work while the server is actually running Campaign or another mode. Set Versus as the initial mode in the launch command or the environment used by your server manager. A native SRCDS launch can include:
+mp_gamemode versus
Containerized deployments commonly expose the same choice through an environment setting such as DEFAULT_MODE=versus. If you want a Versus-only server, restrict the allowed game types in the image or launch configuration you use. The exact setting name is deployment-specific, but the resulting mode should be visible in the startup log and in the server browser.
Open the network path
- Choose the listening port. The Steam installation guide identifies 27015 as the default Left 4 Dead 2 server port.
- Allow the port through the host firewall. Permit both TCP and UDP traffic for the game service if your firewall separates protocols.
- Forward the port on a home router. Send external traffic on the chosen port to the server’s fixed local IP address. Reserve that address with a DHCP reservation or configure a static address so the rule does not become stale.
- Match published and container ports. In Docker bridge mode, the documented setup publishes TCP and UDP and warns that the client-facing port and host port must match. A mismatch can leave the process running but unreachable.
- Test from outside the local network. A connection from another device on the same LAN may succeed even when internet forwarding is broken. Have a player on a different connection try the public address.
Do not expose administrative interfaces unnecessarily. The game port must be reachable; RCON should be protected by a strong password and limited by firewall rules where practical.
Make the server discoverable
You have several ways to let players find a private dedicated server:
Rank #4
- Brand - zYoung 4 Pcs combs,(as shown in picture)
- Lightweight and Portable Design: These combs are very light and convenient, allowing you to put them in your bag and use them at any time
- The comb works easy.
- Steam Group: Associate the server with a group so members can locate it through the game’s group-server options.
- In-game browser: Search the community or dedicated-server listings after the server has registered successfully.
- Forced dedicated selection: From a Best Available Dedicated lobby, use
mm_dedicated_force_servers ip:portto direct the lobby to your endpoint. - Direct connection: Players can open the developer console and run
connect ip:port, replacing the address and port with the server’s public endpoint.
Use the public address for players outside your network. The server’s private LAN address is appropriate only for clients that can route to that network.
Validate a real 10v10 match
- Restart the server after all plugins and cvars are installed.
- Confirm the startup log reports Versus mode and no failed MetaMod, SourceMod, L4DToolZ, or team-plugin entries.
- Run
sm plugins listand verify the team-management plugin is loaded. - Check that
sv_setmaxandsv_maxplayersreport or retain 20. - Check that survivor and infected limits are both 10.
- Connect with two or three test clients first. Confirm that players can join both teams and that the server does not kick clients at the normal limit.
- Fill the lobby gradually to 20. Watch the server console, CPU and memory use, tick stability, and network behavior during a complete map.
- Repeat the test on every map type and plugin combination in your intended rotation. A setup that survives one map is not automatically stable for all campaigns.
Performance and stability limits
A community report from 2010 describes 20-player 10v10 play as stable in that operator’s environment, but says counts above 20 were not time-stable. That is an experience report, not an independent benchmark, a current compatibility table, or a Valve guarantee. Treat 20 as the tested target from this procedure, not as proof that 21 or more players will behave acceptably.
Your result depends on the exact plugin builds, map rotation, CPU and RAM headroom, tick settings, operating system, and network path. Large custom campaigns and additional plugins can change load substantially. Keep the first production test conservative: use the intended 20-slot limit, monitor a full round, and only then decide whether any further experimentation is worth the additional instability.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server still stops at eight players
Confirm that L4DToolZ is installed and loaded, then verify both sv_setmax 20 and sv_maxplayers 20. SuperVersus documentation states that an extension is required beyond eight total players; changing only l4d_survivor_limit cannot remove that cap.
The limit commands are unknown
An unknown sv_setmax or sv_maxplayers command usually means L4DToolZ did not load or its files are in the wrong directory. Recheck the extension’s placement under left4dead2, inspect startup errors, and restart after correcting the path.
SourceMod reports the team plugin as failed
Verify the installation order: MetaMod, then SourceMod, then the extension and plugin. A missing dependency, incompatible binary, or nested addons/addons directory can prevent loading. Use sm plugins list and the startup console to identify the first failure in the chain.

Players can connect locally but not from the internet
Check the host firewall, router forwarding rule, public address, and whether the server is listening on the same port you published. For Docker bridge mode, compare the client-facing and host ports and publish both TCP and UDP as documented. Test from a separate internet connection.
The server starts in the wrong mode
Set +mp_gamemode versus in the native launch command or the deployment’s Versus mode setting such as DEFAULT_MODE=versus. Restart and confirm the mode in the startup output before inviting players.
Players see inconsistent team counts
Restart after changing the team cvars, allow one map change, and confirm that the installed plugin actually recognizes l4d_survivor_limit 10 and l4d_infected_limit 10. A maintained fork may rename these controls; use its documented equivalents rather than mixing cvars from different versions.
RCON is being probed
Replace any short or reused password with a long random one, avoid publishing it in chat or configuration repositories, and restrict the RCON path at the firewall when your hosting environment permits it. The Docker documentation specifically warns that weak passwords invite dictionary attacks.
Operate and maintain the server
- Back up configuration: Keep copies of
server.cfg, plugin configuration, and launch parameters before updates. - Update deliberately: Use SteamCMD validation after game updates, then test MetaMod, SourceMod, L4DToolZ, and the team plugin together before reopening the server.
- Record the working build set: Note the operating system, plugin versions, map rotation, tick settings, and launch command that passed your 20-player test.
- Automate restarts: A service manager or container restart policy can recover from a crash, but confirm that it does not start the server before networking and mounted configuration are ready.
- Monitor capacity: Watch CPU, RAM, network saturation, and console errors during a full 20-player session rather than relying on an empty-server test.
- Control access: Use a private Steam Group or password while testing, then open discovery only after the port, RCON, and plugin stack are verified.
The practical 10v10 recipe
Install app 222860 outside the SteamCMD directory, create left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg, install MetaMod:Source and SourceMod, add L4DToolZ, and then add SuperVersus or a maintained equivalent. Set the global limits to 20, set each team to 10, launch in Versus mode, forward TCP and UDP on port 27015 (or your chosen matching port), and verify the plugin list before filling the lobby. Keep the target at 20 players, test your real maps and hardware, and treat reports of higher counts as experimental rather than guaranteed compatibility.
