For Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, begin with a moderate preset, native resolution if it is already smooth, and Normal quality anti-aliasing. Run the PC benchmark, change one control at a time, and keep a change only when its measured performance and image quality suit your target. If performance is short, test resolution first, then V-Sync, shadows, screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO), motion blur, and world density. These are evidence-based starting points rather than a universal FPS promise: your processor, graphics card, driver, display and scene will determine the result.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
Smooth-first profile Maximum headroom on older or entry-level hardware Step down resolution if needed; Low or Medium graphics; Normal AA; V-Sync Off comparison; reduced shadows, SSAO, motion blur and world density; low-resolution buffers On comparison Windows PC and Mac builds; detailed ordering is documented for Mac Oct 2026
Balanced baseline Most systems seeking a clear image without blindly using Extreme Native resolution; Medium graphics; Normal AA; Normal shadows and SSAO; motion blur Off or Normal; world density Normal; compare V-Sync and buffer modes Windows PC and Mac builds Oct 2026
Graphics-first profile Systems with benchmark headroom for extra detail Native resolution; raise individual controls to High, then Extreme only when measured performance remains acceptable Windows PC and Mac builds Oct 2026

Which Sleeping Dogs edition and PC build are you configuring?

Check the game name before copying any settings advice. Steam lists Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition as released on October 8, 2014, with visual improvements and 24 previously available DLC extensions integrated into the package. The original Sleeping Dogs and the Definitive Edition are separate releases, so an instruction written for one should not be assumed to apply to the other. The settings and requirements in this guide refer to the Definitive Edition listing on Steam: Steam’s Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition page.

There is also an important operating-system distinction. Square Enix confirms that the PC version has Benchmark Mode, while Feral’s detailed menu order, Q-key directions and several performance notes are written for its Mac port. Use the Windows game’s own Display or advanced-graphics menu and the prompt shown there; do not assume that the Mac Q shortcut is verified for Windows. Mac players can follow the shortcut and menu directions in Feral’s documentation.

How should I benchmark Sleeping Dogs before changing settings?

Benchmark first, then make one change and run the same test again. Square Enix describes the feature plainly: “The Benchmark Mode allows you to test the performance of your PC when running the Game.” Its official PC Benchmark Mode support article confirms the feature but does not provide a universal FPS target.

  1. Set a repeatable starting point. Close unrelated applications, connect a laptop to AC power, and choose the display resolution you normally use. These are sensible consistency checks identified in Feral’s performance guidance, not guarantees of a fix on every Windows machine.
  2. Find Benchmark Mode. On Windows, open the game’s Display, Graphics or Advanced Graphics area and select the benchmark entry exposed by your build. Follow the on-screen key or button prompt. Feral’s Q-key instruction is specific to its Mac build, so treat it as Mac-only documentation.
  3. Record what the game reports. Note the displayed average, minimum or maximum values when those fields are present, along with resolution and each quality choice. Feral’s Mac readme says its result includes minimum, maximum and average FPS; Windows may present the information differently.
  4. Change one control. Leave every other option fixed, rerun the benchmark, and keep the change only if the new result and image are preferable. Changing a whole preset at once hides which control caused an improvement or a visual compromise.
  5. Check a real gameplay scene. If the benchmark looks smooth but driving, rain or a crowded street still stutters, repeat the comparison in a consistent in-game location. A synthetic benchmark and an interactive scene can stress different parts of a system.

Keep a simple note such as “native/Medium/Normal AA, V-Sync on” beside each run. This avoids mistaking a resolution change for a graphics-quality improvement and makes it easy to restore a setting after testing.

Which settings should I lower first for smoother performance?

Feral’s ordered performance levers are resolution, graphics level, V-Sync, quality anti-aliasing, shadow resolution, shadow filtering, SSAO, quality motion blur, world density and low-resolution buffers. The table below turns that order into controlled comparisons. It uses relative guidance from Feral’s Mac documentation; it is not a Windows benchmark or a promised FPS gain.

Control Smooth-performance test Graphics-first test What the source establishes
Resolution Keep native if the benchmark has headroom; otherwise step down one supported level Keep or restore native resolution Feral shows 2560×1440 running slower than 1600×900 and 1024×768 in its Mac examples. Those are comparative examples, not a required Windows menu list.
Graphics level Compare Medium, then Low if necessary Raise individual options rather than jumping straight to Extreme Feral ranks Extreme slower than Medium and Low.
Quality anti-aliasing Start at Normal Try High, then Extreme only with measured headroom Normal is listed as faster and Extreme as slower; no fixed FPS difference is supplied.
V-Sync Compare Off and On in the same scene Keep whichever behavior you prefer after measurement Feral labels Off faster, but disabling it is not a guaranteed cure for every stutter or display issue.
Shadow resolution and filtering Use Normal, then reduce shadow resolution if still short Raise resolution and filtering separately to High The documented quality levels carry different performance costs.
SSAO Use Normal or compare it with the effect disabled if your build offers that choice Test High Feral lists Normal as faster than High.
Quality motion blur Compare Off and Normal Use High only when the effect is worth its cost to you Off is listed as the fastest level.
World density Normal, then Low when busy scenes remain slow High or Extreme after the other changes are stable Feral defines this as the number and detail of environmental objects and ranks Extreme slower.
Low-resolution buffers Compare On for the speed-oriented pass Compare Off if you prefer its image and have headroom Feral labels On faster and Off slower without specifying a universal visual difference.

Resolution

Resolution changes every rendered pixel, so it is an early, easily measured lever. Keep the monitor’s native mode when the benchmark is comfortably smooth; dropping to a lower supported mode can create more headroom but may make the image softer. Do not infer a required Windows resolution from Feral’s Mac examples: the useful lesson is the relative cost of more pixels, not a fixed menu list.

Overall graphics level

Use Medium as the first comparison rather than selecting Extreme by default. If Medium is too slow, compare Low; if it is smooth, raise individual options so you know whether shadows, ambient occlusion or object density are worth their separate costs. This approach preserves the parts of the image you care about instead of accepting every change hidden inside a preset.

Anti-aliasing

Normal quality anti-aliasing is the defensible speed-first starting point. High can clean more edge transitions, while Extreme carries the largest documented cost in Feral’s ordering. Test the settings at your chosen resolution, because an anti-aliasing change and a resolution change can both alter perceived sharpness.

V-Sync

Run one benchmark with V-Sync enabled and one with it disabled, then inspect both the reported result and the motion on your display. Feral’s list identifies Off as faster, but that does not mean every monitor, frame-pacing situation or form of stutter will improve when it is disabled. Keep the mode that gives you the better combination of responsiveness and visible consistency.

Shadows and shadow filtering

Shadow resolution and filtering are separate decisions. A smooth-first pass can leave both at Normal, then lower shadow resolution if the benchmark is still short; a graphics-first pass can raise resolution and filtering one at a time. Testing them separately prevents a costly shadow change from being mistaken for an improvement caused by another control.

SSAO

Screen-space ambient occlusion adds contact shading around objects and surfaces. Feral ranks Normal faster than High, so Normal is the sensible baseline. Raise it only after resolution, overall level and the features you value most are stable, and judge the result in scenes with visible environmental depth.

Motion blur

Quality motion blur is a visual preference as much as a performance choice. Feral lists Off as fastest; Normal is a useful compromise to compare, while High should wait until the benchmark has room. If you dislike blur, turning it off can improve clarity even when the numerical difference is small.

World density

World density controls the number and detail of objects in the environment. Normal is a balanced starting point; Low is the next targeted change when crowded areas are slow. High and Extreme should be reserved for systems that remain smooth after the more fundamental resolution and graphics decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low-resolution buffers

Feral identifies the On mode as faster and Off as slower. The documentation does not establish one universal visual difference, so compare both on a representative scene rather than assuming which image you will prefer. Treat it as a final speed-versus-image choice after the more understandable controls have been measured.

What is a good smooth-performance profile?

Choose the smooth-first profile when your priority is stable play on older hardware or when a busy scene falls below your target. Start at a supported native resolution, then step down only if the benchmark shows insufficient headroom. Use Low or Medium graphics, Normal anti-aliasing, Normal shadows and SSAO, Off or Normal motion blur, and Normal world density. Compare V-Sync Off and On, and test low-resolution buffers On. Retest the profile in a repeatable gameplay scene before raising anything.

This profile deliberately lowers individual visual features before recommending hardware changes. If one control is responsible for the slowdown, you can restore the others instead of accepting a uniformly low preset.

What is the best balanced starting point?

For a system that meets the published requirements and has no obvious performance problem, use native resolution, Medium overall graphics, Normal anti-aliasing, Normal shadows, Normal SSAO, and Normal world density. Compare motion blur Off and Normal, then compare V-Sync modes and low-resolution buffers. This is a starting configuration, not a claim that every Windows PC will produce the same frame rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once the baseline is recorded, raise one feature at a time: shadow resolution, shadow filtering, SSAO, world density, anti-aliasing and finally the overall level. Stop at the first change that makes the benchmark or your repeatable scene unacceptable, and keep the preceding setting.

How do I prioritize better graphics when performance is available?

Keep native resolution first because it preserves the display’s intended pixel mapping. Then raise the visual features you notice most, measuring after each change: High anti-aliasing, higher shadow resolution or filtering, High SSAO, High motion blur, and higher world density are all separate tests. Extreme options should be the final experiments, not a default target, because Feral’s ordering places Extreme anti-aliasing, graphics level and world density among the slower choices.

Do not assume a single “Ultra” or “Extreme” selection is optimal. A graphics-first setup can retain High shadows and SSAO while leaving world density or anti-aliasing at Normal if that trade-off looks better in your preferred scenes.

What hardware does the Steam listing require?

Steam’s Windows listing gives release-era compatibility requirements, not a guaranteed frame rate. It specifies a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo or 2.7 GHz Athlon X2, 4 GB of RAM minimum, and a DirectX 10/11-compatible graphics processor meeting the examples shown on the store page. Its recommended tier lists a Core i5-2300 or Phenom II X4 940, 8 GB of RAM and a stronger listed GPU with 1 GB of graphics memory. Check the exact entries on the Steam system-requirements section.

Those specifications describe what the 2014 release lists as minimum and recommended hardware; they do not promise 30, 60 or any other FPS target on a modern system. Steam also notes that, from January 1, 2024, the Steam client supports Windows 10 and later, while the game’s older operating-system list remains displayed. That client policy should not be confused with a new performance requirement for the game.

When should I consider a hardware change?

Optimize and measure before buying anything. If the machine falls below the published minimum, a compatible DirectX 11 desktop graphics card or compatible RAM upgrade may be necessary, but suitability depends on the motherboard, power supply, case, laptop design and operating system. No current model, price or FPS uplift is established by the published requirements.

On a laptop, connect the charger and close other applications before comparing settings. Feral identifies CPU, RAM, GPU and in-game settings as performance factors in its Mac guidance; those are sensible diagnostic categories for Windows as well, not proof that one particular background process or component is the cause on your machine.

How do I troubleshoot stutter after choosing a preset?

  • Benchmark smooth, gameplay stutters: repeat a consistent driving or crowded-street scene. Lower world density, shadows or SSAO one at a time, because these affect environmental complexity differently from the benchmark’s average.
  • The image is blurry after lowering resolution: restore native resolution and test a lower graphics level, Normal anti-aliasing, motion blur Off or low-resolution buffers On instead. This preserves more display detail while targeting other costs.
  • Turning V-Sync off feels worse: keep it on if the display behavior is more comfortable. The source’s “faster” label is a relative performance ordering, not a requirement to disable it.
  • Extreme settings cause a large drop: return to the last measured configuration, then raise one Extreme option at a time. Feral ranks Extreme slower for several controls, so a broad preset jump obscures the trade-off.
  • Results change between runs: close background applications, keep power connected on a laptop, use the same resolution and scene, and record each setting. Without a repeatable setup, a run-to-run difference can be mistaken for a setting effect.

How should I compare two final configurations?

Compare them on the criteria that matter to you rather than on a guessed universal FPS number.

  • Use the game’s displayed benchmark values, including minimum or average fields when your build provides them.
  • Check clarity at the chosen resolution, especially around moving characters and distant edges.
  • Inspect shadows, contact shading and object density in a repeatable busy scene.
  • Evaluate V-Sync for the display’s motion and responsiveness, not only for the benchmark total.
  • Confirm that the hardware is actually compatible with the game’s published Windows requirements.

Keep the configuration that meets your own target with the fewest visual compromises. There is no publisher-issued universal FPS gain for any individual setting, and no modern-GPU ranking that can replace your measurements.

Why does lowering anti-aliasing help performance?

Anti-aliasing evaluates edges across the rendered image, so higher quality levels generally require more graphics work. Feral’s ordering places Normal ahead of High and Extreme for speed, but it does not publish a fixed number of FPS gained by moving between them.

Are the Steam minimum requirements enough for 60 FPS?

No. The minimum and recommended specifications are compatibility guidance from the release-era listing, not a frame-rate certification. Your resolution, scene, operating system and hardware combination still need to be measured with Benchmark Mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Feral’s Q-key benchmark shortcut on Windows?

Do not assume so. Square Enix confirms Benchmark Mode on PC, while Feral’s Q-key and menu instructions are documented for its Mac build; on Windows, use the shortcut or button prompt displayed by your own version.

Should low-resolution buffers always stay On?

Feral labels On as the faster choice and Off as slower, but does not define one visual result that applies to every display. Compare both modes after the main settings are stable and choose the image-performance balance you prefer.
