If you have the original Nintendo Switch, start with Hollow Knight, then choose TUNIC for Zelda-like secrets or Ori and the Will of the Wisps for lush scenery and gentler movement. If you own a Nintendo Switch 2, the most direct option is simpler: download the free Winds of Viridia demo from the Switch 2 eShop or Steam now, then use Sword of the Sea and either Hollow Knight edition to fill the wait.
One important correction to the title: Winds of Viridia is currently listed for Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam, not the original Switch. Its full release is planned for Q1 2027, with no exact launch date or price announced.

The useful way to read this list is by ingredient rather than by marketing genre. Winds of Viridia combines a seamless 3D wilderness, agile traversal, creature fights, relic-based builds, companions and large guardians. No current Switch indie reproduces all of those elements at once, so each recommendation targets a particular part of the appeal.
What is Winds of Viridia, and when does it release?
Winds of Viridia is an open-world action-adventure from Australian studio Shark Jump, with Matt Trobbiani also listed as a developer. It was revealed at Nintendo Indie World on 28 October 2026 and is planned for Q1 2027—January through March—on Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam. No calendar date, preorder, physical edition or price has been announced.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The original Switch is not included in the official listings currently available. A Switch 2 console is therefore required for the Nintendo version and its demo; the PC alternative is Steam. Do not assume that a future patch or a cartridge edition exists until Shark Jump or Nintendo lists one.
What the game promises
The story begins with a child awakened from a seed, setting out to restore balance to Viridia. Steam describes a journey through the Grantree valley, where you investigate why creatures have become frenzied, meet residents of Sanctuary and search for lost relics.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Traversal: roll, slide, flip and grapple through a seamless wilderness. Plants can increase jump height, launch distance or access to deeper areas.
- Combat: fast, agile fights against dozens of creatures, plus gigantic beasts, living statues and ancient guardians.
- Build variety: relics become totems that can be combined to customise a playstyle.
- Companion: a Mothbug assists with exploration and combat.
- Music: Kevin Penkin and Christopher Larkin provide the orchestral score. Larkin composed Hollow Knight; Penkin is known for Made in Abyss.
- Social hub: Steam mentions helping residents of Sanctuary and joining them for a meal, suggesting a quieter rhythm between expeditions.
Press descriptions frame its influences differently. Console Creatures points to Breath of the Wild-style exploration, Monster Hunter-scale bosses and Studio Ghibli-coded art. IGN calls it a soulslike action-adventure, while Elotrolado highlights Zelda-like traversal, rolling, sliding, launching and a grappling hook. Those are press characterisations, not Steam’s formal genre label. ActuGaming also mentions base-building between expeditions, but that feature is not present in Steam’s listed feature set and should be treated as unconfirmed.
That distinction matters when setting expectations. The official page confirms exploration, combat, totems, the Mothbug and grand bosses; it does not promise a particular difficulty model, crafting system or settlement-management depth. The trailer’s “Breath of the Monster Hunter” and “Kena X Zelda” descriptions came from viewer comments, not developer classifications.
Can you play the Winds of Viridia demo now?
Yes. A free demo is available on Steam and the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop as of the 28 October 2026 announcement. The Steam page states that the full game is not yet available.
- On Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop and search for Winds of Viridia.
- On PC, open Steam and select the listing marked Winds of Viridia Demo.
- Use a controller where possible: Steam lists full controller support and the developers recommend one.
- Add the full game to your Steam or Nintendo wishlist if you want a launch notification; neither store currently provides a price or release day.
There is no published editorial performance test for the demo. Anonymous forum comments describe agile combat and enemies that can deal substantial damage; regard those as anecdotal impressions, not a difficulty rating or benchmark. Steam Deck compatibility is also marked unknown, so modest Windows requirements do not guarantee a verified Deck experience.
Which indie game is the closest match?
1. Hollow Knight — the best first choice
Hollow Knight is the strongest all-round bridge to Winds of Viridia. It shares Christopher Larkin’s music, rewards careful exploration, hides relics and secrets throughout an interconnected world, and builds toward memorable bosses.
Its setting is a hand-drawn insect kingdom rather than a 3D valley, so the structure differs: you navigate a 2D interconnected map instead of a seamless wilderness. The game is on Switch and has a Switch 2 Edition available since 5 February 2026. Oruvai’s 23 October 2026 snapshot records 97% positive English Steam reviews from about 186,000 reviews and a US Steam price of $14.99 at that time. A physical Switch cartridge has also existed, making it the most practical single purchase if you prefer a box rather than a download.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
2. Hollow Knight: Silksong — for tougher boss pressure
Silksong keeps the Larkin connection while making movement and combat more demanding. It launched on 4 September 2025 and is available on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, Switch and Switch 2. The same 23 October snapshot records 93% positive English Steam reviews from about 147,000 reviews and a US Steam price of $19.99.
A free Sea of Sorrow expansion has been promised for 2026, but no Steam date was listed in that snapshot. Metacritic figures reported elsewhere conflict, so no single score should be treated as definitive. Choose Silksong when precision 2D bosses matter more to you than a forgiving learning curve; choose the original Hollow Knight for the gentler entry point.

3. TUNIC — the best secret-first Zelda alternative
TUNIC is an isometric adventure starring a small fox. Its in-game manual gradually reveals maps, techniques and puzzles, making discovery itself the central reward. Dodge, block and parry mechanics add a soulslike edge, but its compact viewpoint and encoded clues make it a structural cousin rather than a visual match for Winds of Viridia. It is available on Switch and was listed with an 85 Metacritic score in 2026 coverage.
4. Mina the Hollower — top-down tunnels and pixel labyrinths
Mina the Hollower is a top-down “Zeldvania” with tunnels and a deliberately pixel-built world. Choose it if the part of the trailer that appealed to you was dungeon routing, compact secrets and classic Zelda-style perspective rather than 3D traversal. It is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, with an 85 Metacritic score cited in 2026 listings.
5. Animal Well — secrets over swordplay
Animal Well is a dense interconnected labyrinth where items and puzzles matter more than fighting. It is the best pick when you want the hidden-route and relic-hunting side of Winds of Viridia without committing to constant boss battles. Oruvai’s 23 October snapshot records 95% positive Steam reviews, while 2026 coverage lists a 90 Metacritic score; Switch is among its platforms.
Which games match the natural art and movement?
6. Ori and the Will of the Wisps — the easier, more forgiving option
Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the closest sourced match for the lush, Ghibli-adjacent wilderness described by press coverage. Its forest is built around fluid movement and emotional atmosphere, and it is generally more forgiving than Team Cherry’s games. It is available on PC, Xbox and Switch, but not PlayStation. Oruvai’s 23 October snapshot records 96% positive Steam reviews, and 2026 listings give it a 90 Metacritic score.

7. Celeste — for movement practice, not open-world exploration
Celeste offers more than 700 screens of exacting platforming. It is a useful warm-up for the timing of rolls, grapples and aerial corrections, but it is a 2D precision platformer rather than a wilderness adventure. It is available on Switch and had 97% positive Steam reviews in the October snapshot. Its relevance is also contextual: City of None, from a Celeste co-creator, appeared in the same Indie World for 2027, but that unreleased game is not a current waiting-list recommendation.
Which games best reproduce the boss challenge?
8. Nine Sols — precise deflections and hard fights
Nine Sols uses Sekiro-inspired deflection timing in an eastern-fantasy setting. It is the closest pick here when the trailer’s giant creatures and difficult encounters are what sold you. Oruvai’s 23 October snapshot records 95% positive Steam reviews, and 2026 listings give it an 86 Metacritic score; it is available on Switch. Expect a demanding timing test rather than a broad 3D arena.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

9. Blasphemous 2 — gothic metroidvania pressure
Blasphemous 2 trades Viridia’s natural colours for a grim gothic world and demanding metroidvania combat. Its Mea Culpa expansion arrived in October 2024, and the game is available on Switch. Choose it for atmosphere and boss pressure, not for a seamless 3D landscape. A 2026 listing cites an 85 Metacritic score.
10. ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist — difficulty you can adjust
ENDER MAGNOLIA is a melancholy metroidvania with difficulty options, making it a better fit than the hardest recommendations if you want control over the challenge. It is available on Switch and had 97% positive Steam reviews in Oruvai’s 23 October snapshot, with an 85 Metacritic score cited in 2026 coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches11. Dead Cells — combat overlap, exploration mismatch
Dead Cells delivers fast, repeatable rogue-lite combat on Switch. It can satisfy the urge to fight and experiment with builds, but procedural runs do not reproduce Winds of Viridia’s promised handcrafted wilderness. It is therefore an optional combat pick rather than a close substitute; 2026 listings cite a 91 Metacritic score.
How the choices compare by axis
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Christopher Larkin’s musical identity | Hollow Knight or Silksong | They share the composer connection with Winds of Viridia. |
| A Zelda-like map and hidden information | TUNIC or Mina the Hollower | Both turn secrets, manuals or tunnels into the main form of progression. |
| Lush nature and expressive movement | Ori and the Will of the Wisps | It is the closest mood match and the gentler option. |
| Hard, timing-focused bosses | Nine Sols or Silksong | Deflections and precision punishments replace broad 3D beast fights. |
| Puzzles and discovery with minimal combat | Animal Well | Its labyrinth and items matter more than swordplay. |
| Repeatable build experimentation | Dead Cells | Fast runs and randomised upgrades provide combat variety, but not a handcrafted world. |
Difficulty is the other major divide. Silksong, Nine Sols and Blasphemous 2 sit on the demanding end. Ori and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown are more assisted choices; the latter is a polished Ubisoft title, not an indie game, so it belongs only as an adjacent movement recommendation.
What should Switch 2 owners play during the wait?
Switch 2 owners have a more direct sequence than original-Switch players.
- Play the demo now. It is the only currently available hands-on slice of Winds of Viridia itself.
- Try Sword of the Sea from 29 October 2026. Giant Squid’s contemplative traversal across sand and sea is a strong same-week companion for players who want beautiful movement through a mysterious landscape, although it is not a monster-hunting game.
- Use the Switch 2 editions of Hollow Knight or Silksong for the longer wait. They preserve the Larkin connection while offering substantially more exploration and boss content than a short demo.
- Keep TUNIC and Ori in rotation. Both remain useful on the hybrid console: one for secrets, the other for nature and movement.
Other 2027 announcements such as Witchbrook, Threads of Time and Tenjutsu are unreleased, so they do not solve the immediate “what can I play now?” question. Metroid Ravenous, dated 28 January 2027 for Switch 2, is likewise an adjacent first-party option rather than part of this indie list.
What should original-Switch owners play?
The original Switch cannot currently run the listed Winds of Viridia release or demo, so build your waiting list around the game’s individual ingredients:
- Hollow Knight: Larkin’s music, secrets and bosses.
- TUNIC: Zelda-like discovery and hidden information.
- Ori and the Will of the Wisps: lush nature, movement and a gentler difficulty curve.
- Nine Sols or Animal Well: choose demanding deflections or low-combat puzzle exploration.
This order avoids pretending that any 2D game is a one-to-one replacement for a 3D open world. Instead, it lets you target the exact feature that attracted you. If you want a physical purchase, search for the Hollow Knight Nintendo Switch cartridge; it is the clearest shelf-ready product associated with this waiting list. There is no announced Winds of Viridia cartridge or preorder to buy.

What does the Steam PC version require?
Steam lists Windows 10 version 21H1 (build 19043) or newer, DirectX 12 and 5 GB of storage. The minimum configuration is an Intel Core i5-3470 at 3.20 GHz, 3 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 3 GB of VRAM. The recommended configuration is an Intel Core i5-6600K at 3.50 GHz, 5 GB of RAM and a GTX 1070 with 5 GB of VRAM. Steam Deck compatibility is listed as unknown, and there were no user reviews on the listing at the time of the October 2026 snapshot.
The game is single-player and supports Steam Cloud, Family Sharing and full controller input. Steam lists English, French, Italian, German and Spanish (Spain) among its supported interface, audio and subtitle languages, with 12 languages shown in total on the store page. These are store specifications, not a promise that every language has full voice acting; check the final listing for the complete breakdown.
Price, preorder and buying cautions
There is no confirmed price for Winds of Viridia, no calendar launch date and no published SKU. The free demo should not be mistaken for a preorder or an indication of the final game’s length. Steam currently labels the full game as unavailable, while the Switch 2 eShop hosts the demo separately.
For a low-cost way to sample the soundtrack lineage, the recorded US Steam price was $14.99 for Hollow Knight and $19.99 for Silksong on 23 October 2026. Store prices and sales can change, and those figures do not establish Nintendo eShop pricing. Wishlisting on Steam or Nintendo’s store is safer than relying on unverified preorder pages.
How we picked these waiting-list games
The ranking separates the features officially promised for Winds of Viridia from press comparisons. We prioritised games already playable on Switch or Switch 2, then matched them against five reader needs: 3D wilderness versus 2D or isometric maps, agile combat versus secret-first play, natural art and mood, the Christopher Larkin soundtrack connection, and difficulty. Unreleased Indie World announcements were excluded from the playable-now list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Winds of Viridia coming to the original Nintendo Switch?
The official listings currently name Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam only. No sourced listing confirms an original-Switch version, so owners of the older console should treat the Switch 2 requirement as real unless Shark Jump or Nintendo announces otherwise.

Kevin Penkin and Christopher Larkin are credited for the orchestral score. Larkin’s authorship is the direct reason Hollow Knight and Silksong are unusually relevant recommendations.

Is Winds of Viridia multiplayer?
Steam lists the game as single-player. The Mothbug is an in-game companion controlled as part of the solo adventure, not a second-player mode.
Can I play the Winds of Viridia demo on Steam Deck?
Steam’s listing marks Steam Deck compatibility as unknown. The store page does not provide a verified Deck rating, so compatibility should not be assumed from the modest Windows system requirements alone.
Recommended Free Tools
How much will Winds of Viridia cost?
No price has been announced for either platform. Avoid treating third-party preorder pages or placeholder listings as official pricing.
Is there a physical Switch 2 cartridge?
No physical edition has been announced in the current listings. The only confirmed Nintendo product is the Switch 2 eShop version and its free demo.
Which game should I play first if I only own an original Switch?
Start with Hollow Knight for Christopher Larkin’s score, interconnected exploration and bosses. Follow it with TUNIC for Zelda-like secrets or Ori and the Will of the Wisps for nature and easier movement.
What is the closest 3D replacement for Winds of Viridia right now?
None of the sourced indie recommendations duplicates its combination of seamless wilderness, agile traversal and grand-beast fights. On Switch 2, the demo itself is the closest hands-on option; Sword of the Sea is the nearest same-week match for scenic traversal, not combat.
The Bottom Line
Choose by the feature you want to rehearse. Hollow Knight is the best overall and the only recommendation sharing Christopher Larkin’s music; TUNIC covers Zelda-like secrets; Ori covers lush nature and forgiving movement; Nine Sols covers punishing boss timing; and Animal Well covers discovery with minimal fighting. Switch 2 owners can download the Winds of Viridia demo now, while everyone else should remember that the full game is planned for Switch 2 and Steam in Q1 2027, not the original Switch.
