For the classic Nintendo 64 version of Ocarina of Time, the simplest current route is Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, provided the game is in your region’s live Nintendo 64 catalog. Nintendo has also announced a separate 2026 release rebuilt for Nintendo Switch 2, but its exact launch date and price have not been established in the announcement available here.
Older options still make sense for different reasons: Wii U or Nintendo 3DS systems can redownload games bought before their eShop purchasing shutdown, while an original Nintendo 64 and cartridge offer the most direct hardware ownership. The right choice depends on whether you value convenience, portability, the newly announced Switch 2 version, legacy ownership or original hardware.

Quick answer: which version should you choose?
Choose Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on Switch or Switch 2 if you want the least complicated way to play the classic Nintendo 64 edition on a modern system. The membership adds a library of selected Nintendo 64 games playable on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Because catalog contents and regional terms can change, confirm that Ocarina of Time is listed for your account region before subscribing.

Choose the announced Switch 2 release if your priority is Nintendo’s new-generation presentation rather than the emulated N64 release. Nintendo announced on June 12, 2026 that the classic would return in 2026 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. That announcement did not provide an exact date or price, and it should not be treated as confirmation that the release is already available.

Playing on Switch with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
What this membership provides
Nintendo describes Expansion Pack as a paid membership that includes selected games from several older systems, including Nintendo 64, with those games playable on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. For Ocarina of Time, this is a library-access model rather than a separate cartridge or permanent digital purchase. You use the Nintendo 64 section associated with the membership and launch the game from there.
This route is attractive because one current system can cover both portable-style play and television play. You do not need to locate an original cartridge, find a working N64, or maintain a legacy eShop account simply to start the game. It is also the route with the clearest current support position for people who already have Switch hardware.
Check the catalog before paying
The membership is not a guarantee that every Nintendo 64 title is available in every country at all times. Nintendo’s wording refers to selected games, and catalog availability and membership terms are subject to change. Open the current Nintendo Switch Online information for your account region and verify that Ocarina of Time appears in the Nintendo 64 catalog you can use. This check is especially important if you are buying a console and membership specifically for one game.
Also distinguish access to the game from ownership of the game. If your membership lapses, Nintendo says membership benefits are paused for included downloadable content. In practical terms, treat this as continued access tied to an active subscription, not as a one-time purchase that remains available independently of the service.

How to get started
- Confirm that your Nintendo Account is set to the region whose Nintendo 64 catalog you intend to use.
- Review Nintendo’s current Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership terms and confirm that the Nintendo 64 catalog includes Ocarina of Time.
- Subscribe to the Expansion Pack tier if you do not already have it.
- On your Switch or Switch 2, open the Nintendo Switch Online software and select the Nintendo 64 catalog.
- Install or launch the Nintendo 64 application, then select Ocarina of Time from its available game list.
- Test the game in the way you plan to play it. A handheld session, a television session and an external controller can feel different, so check your preferred control arrangement before beginning a long save.
Who should choose this route
- Existing Switch owners: You add a membership rather than buying another legacy console.
- Players who want portability: Switch hardware supports handheld-style play as well as television play.
- People who want a straightforward setup: The console, service and catalog are maintained inside one current ecosystem.
- Players comfortable with subscription access: Continued availability depends on membership and the current catalog.
What the announced Switch 2 release changes
It is a separate release path
Nintendo’s June 12, 2026 announcement says that the Nintendo 64 classic returns for a new generation in 2026, reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. That wording establishes a Switch 2-only release and separates it from the classic N64 game offered through the Nintendo Switch Online catalog. Buying or subscribing to the catalog should not be described as buying this announced new-generation version.
The two routes therefore answer different questions. The membership route is the practical way to play the established N64 edition now when it is in your regional catalog. The Switch 2 announcement points to a distinct release for people who want Nintendo’s new-generation treatment and are prepared to use Switch 2 hardware.

- Confirmed: Nintendo announced the release on June 12, 2026.
- Confirmed: Nintendo stated that it is planned for 2026.
- Confirmed: Nintendo stated that it is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
- Not established by that announcement: an exact launch day, a price, the final distribution method, or whether it replaces or supplements the catalog edition.
Do not buy a Switch 2 on the assumption that the game has already launched unless a newer Nintendo announcement confirms availability. If you are deciding today, regard the release as an announced future or current-year product whose timing and price require a live check.
When Switch 2 is the sensible purchase
Switch 2 is the logical target when the new version itself is the reason you are upgrading. It is also the only route in this comparison that Nintendo has identified as exclusive to the announced release. If your priority is simply replaying the original N64 game, buying new hardware solely for that purpose is harder to justify while the catalog route remains available to you.
Wii U and Nintendo 3DS: a legacy-owner option
New purchases are closed
Nintendo’s support notice states that, as of March 27, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops were no longer possible. That date rules out these systems as a normal new-purchase recommendation. A reader who does not already own the hardware and software cannot rely on opening the old store and buying Ocarina of Time today.

Existing purchases can still be redownloaded
Nintendo says existing owners can continue to redownload purchased games and downloadable content for the foreseeable future. If you bought the game before the purchasing cutoff, keep the purchasing account, compatible hardware and account credentials available, then use the system’s redownload functions to restore it. The statement is about prior purchases; it does not reopen the stores for new transactions.
Because the wording is “for the foreseeable future” rather than a permanent guarantee, treat a legacy copy as something to preserve. Keep the system updated while support remains available, avoid deleting a working installation without a reason, and retain any account information needed to identify the original purchase.
Online functions ended separately
Nintendo also states that online play and other online-communication functions for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS ended on April 8, 2024. That shutdown does not erase an already purchased single-player game, but it does mean you should not expect the former online services around those systems to operate as they did before that date.
When legacy hardware is worth using
- You already own the system and bought the game before March 27, 2023.
- You prefer a dedicated handheld or legacy-console setup and do not want a new subscription.
- You want to preserve an existing digital library rather than migrate to a different platform.
If none of those conditions applies, the closed storefronts add friction: you would need to source used hardware, confirm that the seller’s account and software ownership are legitimate, and accept that future redownload support is described only as lasting for the foreseeable future.
Original Nintendo 64 hardware and cartridge
Why collectors still choose it
An authentic Nintendo 64 with an original cartridge is the most direct ownership route in this guide. The game runs on the hardware for which it was released, and the cartridge is not dependent on a subscription catalog. For collectors, that physical relationship can matter more than convenience, portability or access to a newer edition.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This route is also the least uniform from one buyer to another. Current prices vary by market, cartridge condition, authenticity, included accessories and local availability. No dependable price series is established here, so avoid treating any single used-listing price as a standard value.
Checks to make before buying
- Cartridge authenticity: Confirm that the cartridge is genuine rather than an unverified reproduction.
- Condition: Inspect the shell, label, contacts and save functionality where the seller permits testing.
- Console condition: Check that the Nintendo 64 powers on reliably and accepts the cartridge without intermittent failures.
- Controller availability: Make sure you have a compatible controller in usable condition; original accessories vary widely in wear.
- Display compatibility: Plan how the console will connect to your television. A modern display may require additional adapters or capture hardware, depending on its inputs.
- Return protection: Used hardware and cartridges differ substantially, so a return policy is valuable when authenticity or operation cannot be tested in person.
Portability and setup trade-offs
The original N64 assumes a television-based arrangement. It is not a handheld system, and moving it between rooms generally means moving the console, power connection, video connection and controller. Additional display or capture equipment can create other play arrangements, but those accessories add complexity and are not part of the original hardware package.
Choose this route when the physical console, cartridge and controller are part of the experience you want. Do not choose it merely because it seems like the cheapest option without checking the complete setup: the console, cartridge, controller, display connection and any replacement parts all affect the real cost and effort.

If portability is your first priority
Switch and Switch 2 are the clear modern choices because both support handheld-style play as well as television play. A Nintendo 3DS can also serve as a portable legacy device if you already own the compatible purchase. An original N64 requires a television arrangement unless you add other hardware.

If you want to avoid ongoing membership
An original cartridge does not depend on a Nintendo Switch Online membership. A previously purchased Wii U or Nintendo 3DS copy likewise does not become a new subscription purchase, although its future redownload support is described as available for the foreseeable future. The Switch catalog route is the one explicitly tied to an active membership.
If you want the newly announced version
The announcement identifies Nintendo Switch 2 as the exclusive platform. Until Nintendo publishes the final date, price and availability details, keep the purchase decision conditional on those details rather than assuming a launch has occurred.
A practical decision path
- Check what you already own. If you have a Switch or Switch 2, start with the current Nintendo 64 catalog. If you have a Wii U or 3DS and bought the game before the 2023 cutoff, check your redownload library. If you have an N64 and cartridge, test that setup before buying anything else.
- Decide which edition you mean. The subscription route and original cartridge are ways to play the classic N64 release. The announced Switch 2 product is a separate new-generation release.
- Choose your access model. Select subscription access for convenience, legacy ownership for preserving an existing purchase, or cartridge ownership for physical control of the game.
- Check availability in your region. Nintendo catalogs, membership terms and release timing can vary, so verify the live Nintendo pages associated with your account and country.
- Account for the complete setup. Include hardware, controller, display connection and any ongoing membership requirement. A route that looks simple in isolation may be less suitable once the missing accessory or subscription is included.
- Buy only after the version and platform match. Confirm that the listing or service is for the edition you actually want, especially if you are choosing between the classic catalog game and the announced Switch 2 release.
Availability risks to keep in mind
The modern subscription route depends on a live catalog and active membership. Nintendo can change catalog contents, regional availability and membership terms, so check the current listing rather than relying on an old screenshot or an expired recommendation. This is the main trade-off for the convenience of playing on current hardware.
The Switch 2 route has a different uncertainty: Nintendo has announced the platform and 2026 release year, but the cited announcement does not establish the exact date or price. Treat any third-party date or price as unconfirmed unless Nintendo publishes it.
The Wii U and 3DS route carries legacy-store risk. Purchases have been closed since March 27, 2023, and online communication functions ended April 8, 2024. Existing owners retain redownload access for the foreseeable future, but that wording is not a promise of indefinite service.
The N64 route carries physical-market risk. Authentic cartridges, working consoles, controllers and display solutions are not equally available in every market. Inspect each component instead of assuming that any used bundle is complete or genuine.
Bottom line
For most players who want to play the classic Ocarina of Time today, Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the most convenient answer, subject to the current regional catalog and an active membership. Players seeking Nintendo’s announced new-generation version should target Switch 2 and wait for confirmed launch details. Existing Wii U or 3DS owners can continue using qualifying purchases, while collectors who value original ownership should seek a verified Nintendo 64, cartridge and compatible display setup.
