The best weapons in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl depend on the fight and what you can keep supplied and repaired. For a flexible rifle-and-shotgun pairing, use the Kharod for mixed mid-range encounters and the Ram-2 for mutants and close quarters. Choose the SVDM-2 for practical long-range work; take the Gauss Gun when maximum power matters more than weight and scarce ammunition. These are role-based editorial recommendations, not an official GSC Game World ranking.
Best weapons by situation
| Situation | Recommended weapon | Why it fits | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed mid-range travel and fights | Kharod | Balances accuracy and handling, with flexibility for attachments. | Check condition, ammunition compatibility, weight, and available upgrades. |
| Mutants, buildings, tunnels, and other close fights | Ram-2 | Strong close-range damage suits confined spaces and threats that close quickly. | Carry a rifle for open ground; shotguns lose effectiveness at distance and need reloading. |
| Open ground and distant human enemies | SVDM-2 | A practical long-range choice. | Verify ammunition compatibility: Patch 1.5 changed default ammunition compatibility for this rifle family. |
| Maximum power at range | Gauss Gun | The role guide identifies it as the maximum-power endgame option. | It is heavy, fires at a slower rhythm, and uses scarce battery ammunition. |
| Mobile close-range automatic fire | Integral-A or Fora-230 | Integral-A suits rapid fire; the lighter Fora-230 is an Update 2.0 option when mobility is the priority. | SMGs have less reach than rifles, and automatic fire can consume ammunition quickly. |
| Light backup weapon | Rhino | A hard-hitting pistol-slot backup. | Its cylinder is small, and its ammunition may compete with other 9×39 weapons. |
The Kharod and Ram-2 make a useful general-purpose pairing because they cover different distances and enemy types. That recommendation comes from Pixel Twelve’s Update 2.0 role guide, updated October 3, 2026—not from an official developer tier list. Read the role guide.

Choose a weapon type for the encounter
Assault rifles: flexible mid-range weapons
GSC describes assault rifles as balanced in accuracy, velocity, and damage, and best suited to medium range, particularly with a scope. Recoil, hip-fire spread, and ammunition use can undermine their strengths. GSC’s official Weapon Types and Uses guide, dated November 18, 2024, advises: “Best used at medium range, especially with a scope. Fire in short bursts or single shots to conserve ammo and improve accuracy.”
Shotguns: close-range damage
Shotguns excel against mutants and in confined spaces, but are poor at longer distances, can be heavy, and require frequent reloading. The Ram-2 is the role guide’s close-range pick; plan to switch to a rifle when the fight moves into open terrain.
#1 Best Overall
Sniper rifles: distance and vantage points
Sniper rifles are suited to distant targets and high vantage points. Their weight, slow reloads, and awkwardness in close combat make them specialist choices rather than convenient all-purpose weapons. The SVDM-2 is the role guide’s practical pick for long-range fights.
SMGs: mobility and rapid fire
SMGs offer automatic fire, mobility, and low recoil, trading away range and using ammunition quickly in automatic mode. Choose Integral-A for rapid fire or Fora-230 when a lighter, more mobile Update 2.0 option suits your route.

Pistols and machine guns: backup or specialist roles
Pistols are light close-range backups, not serious long-range primaries; the role guide recommends the hard-hitting Rhino. Machine guns can suppress groups with large magazines, but are extremely heavy. Carry either only when its role justifies the load.
Check ammunition and updates before committing
Weapon rankings can become outdated when patches change ammunition rules or balance. In Patch 1.5, released June 25, 2025, GSC changed default compatibility with light steel-core ammunition: the SVDM-2, SVU-MK S-3, and M701 Super do not use it by default without a weapon upgrade. PKP machine guns, Mark I EMR, and the Three-Line Rifle can use it by default. The same patch increased armor penetration for the Grom S15 and AS Lavina and reworked the Cavalier unique weapon. See GSC’s Patch 1.5 notes for the changes.

The Update 2.0 role guide reports four new standard platforms: the ARev assault rifle, GP3A DMR, SIC DMR (announced as SKP before release), and Fora-230 SMG. It also identifies a hidden unique ARev variant, Jagerblick, and new 3× and red-dot sight options. GSC confirms that Update 2.0 added weapons and attachments, but does not publish an official tier list; its Update 2.0 announcement describes the update rather than ranking the weapons.

A weapon’s usefulness depends on more than its nominal damage. Compare engagement distance and enemy type, ammunition supply and compatibility, weight and mobility, condition and repair needs, and the upgrades and attachments available to you. Match fire mode and ammunition to the encounter, and use attachments such as sights, silencers, magazines, or under-barrel options where compatible. Technician-installed upgrades can include compensators and grips.
- For a varied route, pair weapons that cover different distances, such as the Kharod and Ram-2.
- For open terrain, confirm the rifle’s ammunition compatibility before relying on it.
- For a specialist weapon such as the Gauss Gun, consider whether its weight and ammunition demands fit the route.
- Maintain the weapons you carry; a stronger option is less useful if you cannot supply or repair it.
There is no numerical weapon-stat comparison established in the sources cited here, so these recommendations are based on weapon roles and practical tradeoffs rather than a claimed damage ranking.
