HP has moved premium ambitions to the OMEN MAX range, allowing the regular OMEN 16 to retain capable gaming hardware while cutting costs with a mostly plastic chassis. The result can be an excellent performance-per-dollar machine—but only if you choose the right configuration.

HP OMEN 16 review: the short verdict
The 2025 OMEN 16 is a smarter buy than a luxury gaming laptop when it is discounted and equipped with an RTX 5060 or RTX 5070, at least 16 GB of RAM and a full-gamut display. Its cooling remains effective, the keyboard and touchpad are better than many value-oriented competitors, and the plastic redesign does not automatically mean poor build quality.
Its main weakness is configuration confusion. Some models use relatively modest 1920×1200 screens with limited color coverage, while others offer a much better 2560×1600, 240 Hz, 500-nit IPS panel. GPU wattage also matters: two laptops carrying the same RTX designation can perform differently.

Notebookcheck’s review, published October 14, 2025 and updated February 17, 2026, examined a 2025 standard OMEN 16 with an AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Laptop GPU. The tested RTX 5060 operated at its full configured TGP, but that result should not be generalized to every retail model.
Which OMEN 16 is this?
This review concerns the standard 2025 HP OMEN 16, not the thinner OMEN 16 Slim and not the flagship OMEN MAX 16.

The supplied review evidence does not establish every retail detail of the Notebookcheck unit, such as its exact panel, RAM arrangement, SSD capacity, battery rating or weight. Those details should not be inferred from another OMEN 16 listing.
What changed from the 2024 OMEN 16?
A plastic chassis replaces aluminum
The 2024 standard model used an aluminum chassis; the 2025 review unit uses mostly plastic. That is a clear reduction in premium feel, but it is not the same as saying the laptop is flimsy. Notebookcheck found the newer machine sleek and well-built.
Plastic can reduce manufacturing cost and weight, potentially putting more of the budget into the CPU and GPU. The trade-offs are less rigid, less luxurious construction and a finish that may show fingerprints or wear more easily. Buyers paying close to premium-laptop prices have good reason to expect metal, while value shoppers may reasonably prefer stronger hardware over aluminum surfaces.
HP changed the lineup’s hierarchy
The regular OMEN is now positioned as HP’s more affordable gaming range. OMEN MAX takes the flagship role, with higher-end GPU options and OLED configurations at a substantially higher price. This is a strategic repositioning, not merely a cosmetic annual refresh.
Newer platforms and RTX 50-series graphics
The 2025 platform adds newer AMD and Intel processors and NVIDIA RTX 50-series graphics. HP lists configurations up to an RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with 8 GB of GDDR7, 32 GB of DDR5-5600 memory and a 2 TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD. These are maximum platform specifications—not the equipment included in every OMEN 16.
HP also advertises CPU overclocking capability on supported 2025 configurations. Whether it is available depends on the processor, BIOS and OMEN software settings, so confirm support for the exact product number rather than assuming every model can be overclocked.
Cooling and display choices
HP promotes an upgraded OMEN Tempest Cooling architecture. In Notebookcheck’s testing, the laptop remained relatively cool externally during extended gaming and combined CPU/GPU stress testing, without an obvious noise increase over the previous model. Internal temperatures, fan noise and sustained performance still depend on the CPU, GPU, chassis and selected performance mode.

The display range is broader than the product name suggests. HP’s platform can include panels from 1920×1200 at 144 or 165 Hz to 2560×1600 at up to 240 Hz.
Display: the specification you must not overlook
The best listed standard OMEN 16 panel is a 16-inch, 2560×1600 IPS display with a 60–240 Hz variable refresh range, 3 ms response time, 500-nit brightness, 100% sRGB coverage and variable-refresh support, according to HP’s US specifications.

Other models use 1920×1200 panels at 144 or 165 Hz, with roughly 300–400 nits and either 62.5% or 100% sRGB. That difference affects games, photo and video work, web browsing and general image quality. A low-gamut screen can look noticeably dull even when its refresh rate is high.
| Panel | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| 1920×1200, 144 Hz, about 300 nits | Budget gaming | May have only 62.5% sRGB |
| 1920×1200, 165 Hz, about 400 nits | Esports and general gaming | Still lower resolution; coverage varies |
| 2560×1600, up to 240 Hz, 500 nits, 100% sRGB | Productivity, media and higher-resolution gaming | Costs more and demands more GPU power |
For most buyers, choose 100% sRGB. Choose 1600p when the GPU is strong enough for it. A 240 Hz panel makes sense for competitive games and very high frame rates; it is not a guarantee of 240 frames per second in demanding AAA games.
RTX 5070 models may need DLSS upscaling, frame generation or reduced settings to approach very high refresh rates at 2560×1600. DLSS 4 and Reflex 2 are advertised features of RTX 50-series configurations, but support varies by game.
Do not assume the standard 2025 OMEN 16 includes OLED. OLED appears on specific newer or HyperX-branded OMEN listings, not across the entire standard range. See the specific HP HyperX OMEN listings for those configurations.

RTX 5060: the value choice
RTX 5060 models are the likely sweet spot for mainstream buyers. They are well matched to 1920×1200 gaming and can handle 1600p with sensible settings and upscaling. A full-power implementation, such as the one observed in Notebookcheck’s tested unit, is preferable to a heavily restricted version.
RTX 5070: for 1600p and longer-term headroom
An RTX 5070 is the better match for the 2560×1600 panel, particularly if you play demanding games or want more ray-tracing headroom. However, the name alone does not define performance. Check the exact GPU power limit, cooling design and independent measurements.
HP has promoted claims that the RTX 5070 can be twice as fast as an RTX 4070 in selected games and DLSS conditions. That is a manufacturer claim, not a universal benchmark result, and should not be treated as a general performance rule.

PC Gamer reported a deal configuration with a Ryzen AI 9 365, RTX 5070, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB storage and a 1600p/240 Hz display, with an alleged 115 W GPU configuration. That is useful evidence of what a particular SKU can offer, not a universal OMEN 16 specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCPU-heavy work
The tested Ryzen 9 8940HX configuration should suit gaming, compiling, rendering and other CPU-heavy workloads. Exact productivity performance varies with the processor, memory configuration and power mode. Intel and newer AMD options in the broader product family should be judged by their individual specifications, not simply by the OMEN badge.
Thermals, fan noise and sustained performance
Notebookcheck’s tested machine stayed relatively cool on the outside during prolonged gaming and combined stress testing. That is encouraging for sustained use, and the review found no obvious increase in noise compared with the prior generation.
Still, “cool surfaces” do not necessarily mean low internal CPU or GPU temperatures. Performance mode can raise fan noise, and the Slim model should not be assumed to behave like the standard chassis. When comparing a listing or review, look for sustained clocks, temperatures, fan noise at idle and under load, and evidence of throttling—not just a short benchmark score.
Keyboard, touchpad and daily use
Notebookcheck praised the tested unit’s precise, solid-feeling touchpad and quiet, cushioned keyboard. Those qualities make the OMEN 16 more practical for school or office work than an aggressively styled gaming machine with a harsh keyboard.
Before buying, verify the exact layout, RGB system, webcam, speakers, hinge and port placement. Lighting is not necessarily per-key: the OMEN 16 Slim, for example, uses four configurable RGB zones. The charger is also a meaningful portability consideration; gaming-laptop power bricks are typically large even when the laptop itself is relatively slim.
Ports and upgradeability
HP’s standard 2025 specifications list two DDR5 memory slots, up to 32 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM and up to a 2 TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD. They also list USB-C with 10 Gbps signaling, USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort 1.4 and HP Sleep and Charge, alongside HDMI 2.1, RJ-45 Ethernet and a combined headphone/microphone jack.
Wireless connectivity may be Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E depending on the card, region and SKU. The listed USB-C features should not be confused with Thunderbolt. USB Power Delivery may refer to powering peripherals rather than charging the laptop itself.
Confirm the installed RAM modules, accessible SSD slots, maximum supported memory, USB-C charging behavior and wireless card for the precise retail product number. “Up to 32 GB” does not tell you whether a particular machine has one or two modules installed.

Battery life and portability
As with most gaming laptops, expect the best performance while plugged in. Gaming on battery generally reduces performance substantially, and demanding games will drain the battery quickly. For school or office use, evaluate web browsing, video playback, sleep/wake behavior and charging time separately from gaming endurance.
The OMEN 16 Slim is thinner than the standard model but is not an ultraportable. TechRadar lists Slim configurations around 1.99–2.27 cm thick and 2.425 kg (5.35 lb), with a 70 Wh battery. Its name describes a relative reduction in thickness, not an ultralight design.
Which configuration should you buy?
| Buyer | Recommended target |
|---|---|
| Budget gamer | RTX 5060, 16 GB minimum, 1920×1200 only if it has 100% sRGB and is meaningfully cheaper |
| Balanced buyer | RTX 5060 or RTX 5070, 32 GB preferred, 100% sRGB display and documented GPU power |
| 1600p gamer | RTX 5070 paired with the 2560×1600 panel; use DLSS or adjusted settings in demanding games |
| Competitive gamer | High-refresh panel, especially 240 Hz, if the games played can generate suitably high frame rates |
| Creator or student | 100% sRGB, at least 16 GB RAM, adequate SSD capacity and a comfortable keyboard |
Configurations to avoid
- Any model with 62.5% sRGB unless the discount is substantial and you mainly play games.
- A 240 Hz/1600p panel paired with a low-powered GPU if you expect to use its refresh rate in modern AAA titles.
- 16 GB installed in an unclear memory arrangement when the laptop is difficult to upgrade.
- An RTX 5070 sold without a documented power limit or trustworthy testing.
- A premium price for a low-gamut 1200p screen and plastic construction.
OMEN 16, Slim or MAX?
Choose the standard OMEN 16
Buy the standard model when an RTX 5060 or RTX 5070 configuration is clearly cheaper than comparable competitors, includes a 100% sRGB screen and meets your memory and storage needs. It offers the best balance of performance and price in HP’s 2025 lineup.
Consider the OMEN 16 Slim
The Slim is worth considering if you prioritize a somewhat thinner chassis and find a meaningful discount. TechRadar discussed US RTX 5060 configurations around $1,599 and considered a price closer to $1,400 more compelling; those were dated, configuration-specific figures, not permanent prices. The Slim is a weaker choice when maximum sustained GPU power, connectivity or value matters most.

Choose OMEN MAX 16
Choose the OMEN MAX 16 for flagship performance, RTX 5070 Ti-, 5080- or 5090-class options, and higher-end OLED possibilities. Windows Central reported a 2025 starting price of $2,499.99 for an RTX 5070 Ti configuration with 16 GB RAM, 512 GB storage and a 1200p IPS display. That places it in a different price category from the regular OMEN 16.
Alternatives worth checking
Compare the exact HP SKU with same-GPU competitors rather than with brands in the abstract:
- Lenovo Legion 5 is a close mainstream alternative for a restrained design and balanced gaming performance.
- ASUS ROG Strix G16 is more overtly gaming-focused and may offer higher-power GPU configurations.
- Acer Predator Helios 16 is a performance-oriented rival whose value depends heavily on the exact screen and GPU.
Do not assume any of these is cheaper or faster without checking current, SKU-level prices, GPU wattage, display quality and warranty terms.
Price and buying checks
PC Gamer reported a specific OMEN 16 deal at $1,299.99, reduced from a listed $2,099.99, for an RTX 5070, Ryzen AI 9 365, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and 1600p/240 Hz display. That is a strong historical value signal, not a guaranteed price for August 16, 2026 or any other date.

Quick Recap
Who should buy the 2025 OMEN 16?
- First-time gaming-laptop buyers: Yes, provided the screen and GPU power are checked carefully.
- Existing 2024 OMEN owners: Upgrade only for a meaningful GPU or display improvement; the plastic chassis alone is not a compelling reason.
- Competitive gamers: Consider a 240 Hz model if your games can exploit it.
- Students: The quiet keyboard and practical design help, but account for the weight and charger.
- Content creators: Avoid low-gamut panels; choose 100% sRGB and enough RAM.
- RTX 5070 deal shoppers: A 32 GB/1600p configuration near the $1,300 deal territory reported by PC Gamer is attractive, subject to current price and warranty.
- OLED or flagship shoppers: Look at specific HyperX OMEN or OMEN MAX listings instead of assuming the standard OMEN 16 has OLED.
