For a first playthrough, play BioShock, then BioShock 2, optionally Minerva’s Den, then BioShock Infinite, followed by Burial at Sea – Episode One and Episode Two. That order preserves the cleanest story progression without requiring you to finish BioShock 2 before starting Infinite. Allow roughly a multi-dozen-hour commitment for the three main campaigns, plus several hours for the story expansions. The figures are estimates rather than guarantees: exploration, difficulty, optional objectives, edition and completion goals can change your personal total.
How long does each BioShock game and expansion take?
The best-supported main-story estimate in the available data is 11 hours for BioShock 2 Remastered. The original game and BioShock Infinite have only informal player ranges here, while the add-ons have separate HowLongToBeat figures displayed by IsThereAnyDeal. Treat every number as a planning aid, not a promised completion time.

Those estimates explain why “the entire collection” does not have one authoritative number. A straightforward run through the three main campaigns is a multi-dozen-hour project, but the first-game and Infinite ranges are anecdotal, the BioShock 2 figures differ by edition and source, and the downloadable stories add time separately. Searching every room, playing on a higher difficulty, collecting audio diaries, attempting achievements or replaying alternate choices can all extend a run.

- BioShock 2
- Minerva’s Den (optional, but best after BioShock 2)
- BioShock Infinite
- Burial at Sea – Episode One
- Burial at Sea – Episode Two
This is editorial guidance, not an officially mandated order. BioShock 2 is another story set in Rapture, while Infinite follows Booker and Elizabeth in Columbia. You can therefore begin Infinite without completing BioShock 2. Leaving Burial at Sea until after Infinite is the important part: its two episodes are designed as a bridge between the worlds and characters rather than as a separate starting point.
Why start with BioShock?
The original establishes Rapture, its rules and the series’ central ideas before later games revisit or reframe them. Playing it first also means the references in later material land naturally, without requiring a plot summary that could spoil discoveries.

Why play BioShock 2 next?
BioShock 2 remains in Rapture but tells a different story from a different perspective. It is not a prerequisite for Infinite’s Columbia campaign, yet it is the natural next stop if you want to finish the Rapture setting while its details are still fresh.
Where does Minerva’s Den fit?
Minerva’s Den is extra single-player story content associated with BioShock 2. Its estimated four-hour main story and five-hour completionist figure make it a compact addition. Playing it immediately after BioShock 2 keeps its mechanics and setting context together; skipping it does not prevent you from understanding Infinite.

Why put Burial at Sea after Infinite?
Burial at Sea is an Infinite expansion, and Episode Two is explicitly framed as involving major characters from both the original BioShock and BioShock Infinite. Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games, described it as “a story that involves nearly every major character from the original BioShock and BioShock Infinite” in the February 5, 2014 announcement about Episode Two’s release (official announcement). That is why the episodes work best as the finale of this route, even though the main Infinite campaign itself can be played independently.
Do you have to play BioShock games in order?
No. The games are connected, but the main campaigns are not one uninterrupted technical sequence. You may play Infinite first and still follow Booker and Elizabeth’s immediate story; however, starting with the original BioShock gives you the strongest context, and playing both Burial at Sea episodes after Infinite avoids placing its callbacks out of sequence.

Save Burial at Sea until after that campaign, and consider playing the original BioShock before the expansion.
- Skipping BioShock 2: acceptable for reaching Infinite, because BioShock 2 is another Rapture story rather than a gate on Infinite’s campaign.
- Playing Burial at Sea early: discouraged for a first run because it reconnects characters and settings from the original game and Infinite.
- Playing only the original: a complete, self-contained experience, though you will not see the later Rapture, Columbia or crossover stories.
How long should you budget for a first playthrough?
Plan in blocks rather than adding the numbers into a falsely precise series total. A main-story-focused route through BioShock, BioShock 2 and Infinite is broadly a multi-dozen-hour commitment. Add about four hours for Minerva’s Den and about two hours for Burial at Sea Episode One using the displayed main-story estimates; Episode Two has no independently verified figure in the available data, so leave an unquantified buffer for it.
A focused route
If you follow objectives and do limited exploration, the informal BioShock range is 8–12 hours, BioShock 2 Remastered is listed at 11 hours, and Infinite’s informal range is 10–16 hours. This route omits most optional searching and treats Minerva’s Den and Burial at Sea as separate sessions.

An exploratory route
Exploration changes the result more than the headline ranges suggest. BioShock 2 Remastered’s displayed estimate rises from 11 hours for the main story to 14 hours with sides and 24 hours for completionist play. The original BioShock 2 entry reports 13 hours for the main story, 16 with extras and 22 at 100 percent, based on 61 logged playthroughs when checked. Those numbers are not contradictory promises: they describe different editions and sources.
What the collection adds
The collection’s total content is larger than the three campaign labels alone. Its included single-player material lists Minerva’s Den and both Burial at Sea episodes alongside the remastered games. Budget for those separately instead of treating a “three games” description as a complete all-content time. The collection documentation refers to single-player content, so do not assume that a historic BioShock 2 multiplayer mode is included.
Which edition should you buy for the full story?
For someone who wants the full single-player sequence, BioShock: The Collection is the most straightforward package because it combines the remastered BioShock and BioShock 2 with BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition and the listed story add-ons. 2K’s announcement describes a two-disc collection containing the single-player content for all three games, including Minerva’s Den and both Burial at Sea episodes (publisher announcement and contents).
PlayStation identifies a PS4 edition, and the same publisher material identifies an Xbox One edition. Epic’s digital listing names the three components as BioShock Remastered, BioShock 2 Remastered and BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition. These labels describe the package’s components, not three separate purchases that must all be bought again.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can make your BioShock playtime longer or shorter?
- Exploration: searching side areas, reading environmental clues and finding audio diaries adds time beyond objective-to-objective play.
- Difficulty: tougher settings can increase reloads and resource management, while an easier setting may produce a faster first clear.
- Optional content: side objectives and collectible hunts account for the gap between a main-story estimate and a completionist estimate.
- Edition: remastered and original releases can have different player pools and reported averages, as the two BioShock 2 sources demonstrate.
- Replay goals: alternate decisions, achievements and experimenting with builds turn one campaign into several runs.
- Play style: a first-time player who pauses to explore will not match a returning player who already knows the routes.
Because the BioShock and Infinite ranges cited above come from one player rather than an aggregate, they should be read as orientation only. The BioShock 2 figures are more explicit about their source, but they remain community estimates that can change as new logs are added.
How should you plan the series if you have limited time?
Start with the original BioShock and finish its campaign before deciding whether to continue. If you want the shortest route through the larger arc, play BioShock, Infinite, then both Burial at Sea episodes; add BioShock 2 and Minerva’s Den when you want more Rapture rather than treating them as prerequisites. If you buy the collection, install or start one game at a time and reserve separate sessions for the expansions so their shorter runtimes do not disappear inside a vague “trilogy” estimate.
How we distinguish the time estimates
The figures above are separated by game, edition and source instead of being merged into one artificial total. The BioShock and Infinite ranges are labeled anecdotal; BioShock 2 Remastered, Minerva’s Den and Burial at Sea Episode One use HowLongToBeat values displayed by IsThereAnyDeal; and the original BioShock 2 numbers come from Grouvee’s logged-playthrough figures. Episode Two is left unquantified because a dependable duration was not established. This approach keeps the confidence and scope of each number visible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play BioShock Infinite without playing the first two games?
Yes. Infinite introduces Booker, Elizabeth and Columbia as its own campaign, so it does not require BioShock 2 first. Playing the original BioShock beforehand is still preferable if you plan to continue into Burial at Sea.
Is Minerva’s Den part of BioShock 2 or a separate game?
It is an additional single-player story expansion associated with BioShock 2. It is commonly listed separately in collections and takes about four hours for its main story according to the displayed estimate, so schedule it as its own chapter.
Does BioShock: The Collection include multiplayer?
The collection documentation describes the included single-player content. Do not buy it expecting BioShock 2’s historic multiplayer component to be part of the package.
Why do different websites give different BioShock 2 completion times?
The published figures cover different editions and samples: one source displays HowLongToBeat estimates for the remaster, while another reports its own numbers from logged original-release playthroughs. Completion definitions also differ, so main story, extras and 100-percent goals are not interchangeable.
Is Burial at Sea one long expansion or two separate episodes?
It is divided into Episode One and Episode Two, which should be played consecutively after Infinite. Episode One has a displayed two-hour main-story estimate; no independently verified duration is supplied here for Episode Two.
