Causes grouped by symptom
| Symptom | What it usually indicates | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “bisrv.dll is missing” or “was not found” | The file may have been deleted, quarantined, or cannot be accessed | Check Windows Security, then run DISM and SFC |
| “bisrv.dll could not be loaded” | The file may be damaged, incompatible, or blocked by another Windows problem | Install updates, then repair the component store |
| “The module was not found” | Windows or an application could not locate the required file or a related dependency | Check the System32 path and repair Windows |
| “bisrv.dll is corrupted” | System-file or component-store damage is likely | Run DISM before SFC |
| “bisrv.dll is either not designed to run on Windows” | The file may be the wrong build, damaged, or replaced | Do not copy another DLL; use Windows servicing |
| “The procedure entry point … could not be located” | A mismatched DLL or incompatible Windows component may be loading | Repair Windows and investigate recent updates |
These messages are not a complete official Microsoft error catalog for bisrv.dll. The wording varies according to the Windows loader and the program that displayed the error.
If only one application fails while Windows features work normally, that application may be damaged or incorrectly installed. If the Start menu, notifications, background tasks, or several Windows components also fail, treat the problem as Windows damage first.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows Update is the safest first repair because it can replace protected components with files matched to your Windows build and architecture.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Reopen the program that reported the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
If Windows Update itself fails, restart once more and try again. Do not replace bisrv.dll manually while an update or repair is pending.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use DISM first. It repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source when replacing corrupted protected files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully or that no component-store corruption was detected. Restart if DISM requests it.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the original action.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or found corrupted files that it could not repair. Only the first two outcomes indicate that this step completed cleanly. Microsoft’s documented DISM and SFC procedure is available in its system-file repair guidance.
Repeating SFC without addressing the component store usually does not add useful information. If you want help reviewing what SFC could not repair, extract its relevant log entries:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
This creates sfcdetails.txt on the desktop.
Manually hunting through component versions and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows identified issues; repairs are completed by the full version, but Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.

Fix 3: Check the BrokerInfrastructure service
A missing or damaged service configuration can make Windows features fail even when the file appears to exist.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Background Tasks Infrastructure Service.
- Open it and review its status and startup type.
- Confirm it has not been deliberately disabled.
- If it is stopped and Windows allows it to start, select Start.
- Restart the computer and test Windows again.
Do not change service dependencies, registry entries, or startup settings based on a random repair guide. BrokerInfrastructure depends on other Windows components, including the Power Dependency Coordinator driver. If the service cannot start, return to DISM and SFC rather than forcing registry changes.
Microsoft discusses this service and its relationship to Start-menu problems in its BrokerInfrastructure troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined a damaged-looking file. Do not restore a file solely because its name is bisrv.dll.
Microsoft Defender
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections involving
bisrv.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, and file details.
If the item is outside C:WindowsSystem32, treat it as suspicious. If Defender identifies it as a threat, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Microsoft also provides Microsoft Defender Offline for infections that may be difficult to remove while Windows is running.
If a Microsoft-signed file was incorrectly detected, confirm its signature and detection details before considering restoration. In most cases, repairing Windows with Windows Update, DISM, or SFC is safer than restoring the quarantined copy.
Fix 5: Check whether the application itself is the problem
If the error appears only when starting one program, test Windows before reinstalling that program:
- Open the Start menu and use normal Windows features.
- Open Settings.
- Open File Explorer.
- Restart Windows and check whether the same error appears elsewhere.
If Windows works normally and only one application fails, use that application’s official repair, update, or verify-files feature. If it has no repair option, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will repair bisrv.dll. Those packages are not established dependencies of this Windows service. Reinstall them only when the application’s own error specifically identifies one of them.
Fix 6: Check drivers and storage health
A damaged update, storage problem, or service dependency can cause system files to disappear or become unreadable.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click a device with a warning.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.
For a recently updated device, open Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver only when the option is available and the timing clearly matches the failure.
Guessing which of many installed drivers is stale can be difficult. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing identified driver issues; driver installation is completed by the full version, and you should still prefer the device manufacturer or Microsoft source when selecting a driver.
Check the file system
Back up important files first. Then open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, press Enter, and restart. Allow the check to finish.
Consider storage or file-system corruption when SFC repeatedly reports repairs, the problem returns after a successful repair, or other Windows files also disappear. Microsoft includes CHKDSK among its Windows Update troubleshooting steps.

Avoid DLL download sites and do not copy bisrv.dll from another computer. A replacement can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, or servicing state, and an untrusted file may contain malware. Copying it into an application folder can also hide the real Windows problem without repairing it.

The correct source for this file is Windows servicing through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or a Windows repair installation.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair it
Use recovery options in increasing order of impact.
Try System Restore
Use this when the problem began after a recent update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or repair attempt.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Follow the wizard and restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files but can roll back system files, drivers, registry settings, updates, and installed programs. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
Perform an in-place Windows repair
If Windows remains unstable after System Restore, use Microsoft’s supported recovery or repair-install options for your edition. Choose an option that preserves personal files and applications when available, and back up important data first.
An in-place repair can replace damaged Windows components without requiring a clean installation. Follow Microsoft’s Windows recovery options, and match the installation media to the installed Windows edition and architecture.
Is bisrv.dll malware
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. Location alone is not absolute proof, but a copy in the expected Windows directory with a valid Microsoft signature is consistent with the legitimate component.

- the file is outside the normal Windows directory;
- its digital signature is missing or invalid;
- antivirus reports a detection;
- its metadata is inconsistent with a Windows file;
- the error began alongside browser redirects, unknown software, or other malware symptoms.
Run a full Microsoft Defender scan, or use Defender Offline when appropriate. Do not disable antivirus protection to force the file to load.
FAQ
Should I download bisrv.dll separately?
No. Windows should supply and service it. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Is bisrv.dll part of a third-party program?
No. It is associated with Microsoft’s Background Tasks Infrastructure Service and the BrokerInfrastructure Windows service. A third-party program may be the place where you first notice the error, but that does not make the DLL part of that program.
Should I use the System32 or SysWOW64 copy?
Do not choose a replacement manually. On 64-bit Windows, those directories serve different architecture roles, and Windows servicing supplies the correct files. Never replace a 64-bit component with an arbitrary 32-bit copy.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Why did the error start after malware removal or antivirus cleanup?
The file may have been quarantined, or the cleanup may have exposed pre-existing Windows corruption. Review Protection history, then repair Windows rather than restoring an unverified file.
What if only one game or application reports the error?
Repair or reinstall that application using its official installer, especially if Windows itself works normally. If DISM or SFC also reports corruption, repair Windows first.
When should I seek further help?
Escalate when the error returns after DISM and SFC, System Restore fails, CHKDSK reports recurring problems, or multiple Windows services stop working. Those symptoms can indicate deeper component-store, storage, malware, or hardware problems.
