Disconnecting a site from your wallet is not enough: it changes the wallet connection, but leaves the allowance in place.
Review each network separately, inspect the token and spender before signing, and check the allowance again after the transaction confirms. Revocation costs a network fee and does not recover tokens already transferred.

What a token approval lets a contract do
For an ERC-20 token, an approval sets an allowance for a spender address. The spender can use that permission to transfer tokens from your address, up to the approved amount, through the token’s allowance mechanism. MetaMask explains approvals and the related transfer mechanism in its token approval guide; the interface is defined by the ERC-20 standard.
An allowance can remain active after you stop using a dapp. As ethereum.org puts it, “If you grant contract permissions, they can be used, even years after they’re granted.” That persistence is why old, excessive, or unfamiliar permissions deserve review.

Why unlimited approvals deserve attention
An unlimited allowance can save repeat approval prompts and transactions, but it grants broader spending permission than a specific action may require. If the spender contract is malicious or compromised, the approved token balance may be exposed to transfers within that permission. This is a risk, not a claim that every approval will be abused.
Disconnecting an app is not revoking its allowance
Disconnecting a wallet from a project removes or changes the site’s wallet connection; it does not erase an allowance already recorded on-chain. If your concern is that a spender contract could still transfer an approved token, you need to revoke or reduce that allowance with a transaction.

Revoking affects the selected token, spender, and wallet address on the selected chain. It does not establish that a contract is safe, undo transfers that have already happened, or cancel permissions on other networks.
How to find and revoke an allowance
- Choose an allowance checker or wallet feature. Ethereum.org names Etherscan and Blockscout in the Ethereum context, and Revoke, Unrekt, and EverRevoke as multi-network examples. MetaMask documents approval controls in Portfolio. These examples are not a guarantee of safety or an endorsement; use a service you can independently verify, and check its network support before connecting.
- Select the correct network. Connect the wallet address and choose the chain on which you want to inspect approvals. Allowance views are network-specific: an Ethereum view will not show permissions granted on another chain. Repeat the review on every relevant network.
- Inspect the allowance details. Check the token, spender contract address, allowance amount, and network. Prioritize permissions you no longer need, do not recognize, or consider excessive. Do not decide whether to approve or revoke solely from a displayed name or label; verify the contract identity independently where possible.
- Select the permission to revoke and review the wallet transaction. Revocation must be submitted on-chain, so it requires a network fee. The fee and confirmation time vary with network conditions; there is no reliable universal current quote. Make sure the transaction details match the token and spender you intend to change before signing.
- Verify the result. Once the transaction processes, refresh the checker or reconnect the wallet. Confirm that the spender no longer appears with an active allowance, or that its allowance has been reduced as intended.
Check network coverage and token scope
Tools do not necessarily cover the same chains, and a product’s feature pages may list different networks. MetaMask’s Portfolio spending-cap documentation lists Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, BNB Chain, Optimism, and Base. Its separate revocation article lists Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain. Treat these as page-specific coverage descriptions, not one promise that every MetaMask approval feature supports all five networks.

The steps above focus on ERC-20 fungible-token allowances. NFT permissions such as ERC-721 or ERC-1155 operator approvals use different approval mechanisms and may appear in different tool views; do not assume an ERC-20 allowance check covers them. MetaMask notes that its described ERC-20 and ERC-777 flows use spending caps, while ETH itself does not require a token allowance.

Revocation changes the selected spender’s permission for the token and address covered by the transaction. It should not, according to ethereum.org, terminate staking, pooling, or lending positions, although an operation that needs token-transfer permission may require you to approve again before using it. Behavior depends on the particular token and application.

If you use the dapp again, it may request a fresh approval. When the wallet or dapp offers an amount choice, grant only what the intended action needs rather than an unlimited amount. The ERC-20 standard cautions interfaces about changing an existing nonzero allowance directly to another nonzero amount; wallet behavior varies, so avoid manually interacting with a contract unless you understand the transaction.

Make allowance reviews part of wallet maintenance
- Review permissions on each network you use; one chain’s checker view does not cover the others.
- Remove allowances that are no longer needed, and scrutinize amounts or spenders you do not recognize.
- Prefer a bounded approval when available and suitable for the action.
- MetaMask suggests reviewing approvals monthly as a practical habit; it is a recommendation, not a universal schedule.
