Yes—Bitdefender can protect Windows against ransomware, but it is a layered defense rather than a guarantee. Advanced Threat Defense watches applications and processes for suspicious behavior in real time. Ransomware Remediation adds a recovery layer by keeping protected copies of selected files, blocking processes involved in a detected attack, and restoring files when recovery is available. You must enable the controls in the Bitdefender app, keep the product and Windows edition supported, and maintain independent local or cloud backups.

This guide explains the consumer controls, the separate GravityZone business feature, the exact recovery workflow, and how Bitdefender’s approach differs from Microsoft Defender Controlled folder access.

Does Bitdefender protect Windows against ransomware?

Bitdefender’s consumer Windows protection combines behavioral detection with file recovery. Advanced Threat Defense examines what a program does rather than relying only on a known malware signature. Ransomware Remediation then protects recovery copies of common personal files and intervenes when an attack is detected.

That distinction matters. Detection attempts to stop a malicious process before or during encryption; remediation is designed to give you usable files if some encryption has already happened. Neither layer makes a separate backup unnecessary, and neither should be treated as proof that every file, attack, or storage location can be recovered.

Advanced Threat Defense is the detection layer

Bitdefender says Advanced Threat Defense continuously monitors applications and processes with heuristic methods. It looks for combinations of actions associated with compromise, including copying into important Windows folders, code injection, spawning additional processes, registry changes, and driver installation. Each process receives a danger score based on its behavior. When the score crosses the decision threshold, Bitdefender can block the process.

This behavioral model is intended to catch new or modified ransomware that does not yet match a traditional signature. Bitdefender’s support material makes vendor claims about the feature; those claims are not a dated, independent efficacy benchmark, so they should not be presented as a neutral percentage.

Ransomware Remediation is the recovery layer

Bitdefender describes Ransomware Remediation as a feature that backs up documents, pictures, videos, and music so they can be protected from ransomware encryption. When an attack is detected, it blocks the processes involved and starts remediation. If Automatic restore is enabled and the necessary recovery copy exists, the feature can put encrypted files back.

The practical result is a two-stage response: Advanced Threat Defense decides whether a process behaves dangerously, while Ransomware Remediation supplies a path back to files that were changed by the attack.

How does Bitdefender detect ransomware behavior?

Ransomware normally has to perform many file operations quickly: open files, rewrite their contents, change extensions or metadata, and repeat the process across folders. Bitdefender evaluates that pattern in context instead of waiting for a single filename or hash.

Signals Bitdefender watches

  • Attempts to copy or write into important Windows folders.
  • Code injection into another process.
  • Rapid process multiplication or creation of child processes.
  • Unexpected registry modifications.
  • Installation of a driver.
  • Other correlated actions that raise a process’s danger score.

A single action is not necessarily ransomware. The score is based on the combination and sequence of behaviors, which helps the product distinguish ordinary software activity from a process behaving like an encryptor. Legitimate utilities that perform unusual bulk file operations can still create false positives, so exceptions should be used sparingly and only after you understand the software.

What does Ransomware Remediation back up and restore?

The consumer feature is designed around user data rather than a full system image. Bitdefender specifically names documents, pictures, videos, and music. Its Total Security documentation also lists many commonly used document, image, media, archive, source-code, and database extensions as eligible for restoration.

That list does not mean every file will be recoverable. The documentation does not promise recovery for every extension, every attack, or every storage location. Files that were never copied into the remediation cache, files damaged before the feature was enabled, and data outside the documented scope may require an independent backup.

Automatic restore versus manual recovery

Mode What happens When to use it
Automatic restore Bitdefender attempts to restore affected files after it blocks the detected attack. Useful when you want the product to complete recovery without waiting for a manual choice.
Manual recovery You open the ransomware notification, review encrypted files, choose Recover Files, and select a destination when needed. Useful when you need to inspect the list or recover to another location.

Restoration is a file-level recovery action, not a replacement for a clean operating-system image or an offline backup. If an attacker also deletes backups, steals credentials, or compromises a network share, you need controls outside the antivirus product.

Where do I turn on ransomware protection in Bitdefender?

In the consumer app, the relevant controls are in Protection. The labels below match the Bitdefender Total Security guide dated January 29, 2025; an updated build can present slightly different wording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Bitdefender application and select Protection.
  2. Find the Ransomware Remediation pane and confirm that the feature is enabled. Bitdefender recommends leaving it on.
  3. Select Manage in that pane.
  4. Turn on Automatic restore if you want Bitdefender to attempt recovery without waiting for manual action.
  5. Review Exceptions only when a specific, trusted program is being blocked and you understand what the exception changes.
  6. For behavioral detection settings, go to Protection > Advanced Threat Defense > Open > Settings and verify that Advanced Threat Defense is active.

Do not look for the old Windows Safe Files name in current instructions. A Bitdefender community administrator stated on July 28, 2025 that Safe Files was discontinued for Windows products in 2020. The current consumer names are Ransomware Remediation and Advanced Threat Defense.

How should you handle exceptions?

An exception changes how the remediation layer handles ransomware-like behavior from that application. Add one only for software you obtained from a trustworthy source, understand, and actually need to run. A broad exception for a download folder, scripting host, game-mod tool, or unknown executable can remove a valuable safety net.

How do I recover files after a Bitdefender ransomware alert?

Start from the alert in Bitdefender’s Notifications area. The exact path depends on whether Automatic restore completed the job.

Review files restored automatically

  1. Open Notifications.
  2. Open the ransomware-remediation notification.
  3. Select Restored Files to review what Bitdefender recovered.

Check several important files in the applications that normally open them. A notification confirms the remediation workflow, but your own inspection confirms that the recovered content is usable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recover encrypted files manually

  1. Open the ransomware notification in Notifications.
  2. Select Encrypted Files.
  3. Choose Recover Files.
  4. Select a restore location if Bitdefender cannot restore everything in place or you want to preserve the affected originals for investigation.

If the list is incomplete, stop making changes to the affected machine and use a separate, known-good backup. Repeatedly launching applications or deleting alert data can make later investigation harder.

What is GravityZone Ransomware Mitigation for business PCs?

GravityZone Ransomware Mitigation is Bitdefender’s business endpoint implementation, not the same consumer control exposed in the home app. It detects abnormal encryption, blocks the process, and restores files from backup copies.

Business prerequisites

Bitdefender documents two required components: Advanced Threat Control and On-access Scanning. The endpoint security agent must run in Detection and prevention mode. The feature is documented for Windows workstations and servers, with local monitoring recommended for workstations.

How the business engine identifies encryption

GravityZone monitors file entropy during write attempts. Entropy is the measure of apparent randomness in data; when a file is encrypted, its randomness generally rises significantly. Bitdefender says it creates a temporary backup in memory and restores the original after the write, without relying on Windows Volume Shadow Copy.

Is Bitdefender better than Windows Controlled folder access?

There is no single winner because the features address different control points. Microsoft Defender Controlled folder access protects selected folders by allowing trusted applications to modify them and blocking untrusted applications, with a notification when a block occurs. Bitdefender emphasizes broader behavioral process analysis plus a remediation and restore workflow.

Comparison axis Bitdefender consumer design Microsoft Defender Controlled folder access
Primary control Behavior-based process detection and ransomware remediation Allow-list control over applications that may modify protected folders
Detection breadth Correlates actions such as injection, process creation, registry changes, and driver installation Focuses on whether an application is trusted to write to selected folders
Recovery Maintains remediation copies and offers automatic or manual file restoration when available The feature itself is a blocking control; a separate backup is needed for recovery
Administration Local Protection settings in the Bitdefender app Windows Security and Windows management controls
Licensing Depends on the Bitdefender edition you install Availability depends on the Windows security configuration and edition

You can evaluate them on separate axes: how much behavior each observes, how protected folders are selected, how false positives are handled, what restoration path exists, and what the total licensing and administration burden is. Do not claim superiority from a vendor statement or an undated test; use a dated independent evaluation if you need a measured comparison.

Which Windows versions and Bitdefender editions are supported?

The cited Bitdefender Total Security guide, published January 29, 2025, lists Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 in its system-requirements section. That is a snapshot for that guide, not a permanent promise of support for every later build or edition. Microsoft and Bitdefender lifecycle changes can alter requirements, so check the current system-requirements page for the exact product you plan to install.

Edition also matters. The consumer feature discussed here is documented in the context of Bitdefender Total Security for Windows. Other editions may expose different controls, and a business GravityZone license follows a different policy and prerequisite model. Confirm that Ransomware Remediation appears under Protection before relying on it.

Why are independent backups still necessary?

Ransomware Remediation is an additional recovery layer, not an independent backup strategy. Bitdefender’s own business guidance recommends scheduled local or cloud backups so data can be recovered after corruption. Keep copies that ransomware cannot modify through the same user account, and verify periodically that files can actually be restored.

  • Maintain a separate local or cloud copy of documents, media, project files, and game-related data that matters to you.
  • Keep at least one copy isolated from the everyday Windows account or machine.
  • Patch Windows, browsers, launchers, and utilities, because remediation cannot compensate for every initial-access path.
  • Use strong, unique credentials and limit write access to shared folders.
  • If an alert appears, disconnect the affected PC from networks where practical, preserve the notification details, and investigate before reconnecting shared storage.

Bitdefender does not publish a dated independent success rate in the material covered here. Treat claims about detection or recovery as product descriptions, not as a guarantee that every attack will be stopped.

What should Windows gamers configure first?

For a gaming PC, start with the same protection sequence as any other Windows computer: enable Ransomware Remediation, enable Automatic restore, and verify Advanced Threat Defense. Then identify where your irreplaceable saves, recordings, screenshots, mods, and personal projects are stored and include those locations in an independent backup plan.

Game launchers, mod managers, compilers, and backup utilities can perform large numbers of legitimate file writes. If Bitdefender blocks one, inspect the notification and verify the publisher and file path before creating an exception. An exception should name a specific trusted application, not an entire folder containing downloads or untested tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Bitdefender recover files that were encrypted before I installed it?

There is no reliable promise of recovery for damage that predates the feature. Remediation copies are made while the protection is active, so use a clean local, cloud, or offline backup for earlier damage.

Does the consumer feature use Windows Volume Shadow Copy?

The documented no-Volume-Shadow-Copy method applies to GravityZone Ransomware Mitigation, which keeps a temporary backup in memory during a monitored write. The consumer Ransomware Remediation documentation describes protected copies and restore but does not specify the same implementation detail.

Should I add my game launcher or mod manager to Ransomware Remediation exceptions?

Only add a specific application that you trust and can identify. Exceptions alter how ransomware-like behavior from that program is handled, so broad or speculative exceptions can reduce protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether my Bitdefender edition includes Ransomware Remediation?

Open the Bitdefender app and look under Protection for a Ransomware Remediation pane. If it is missing, check the current documentation for your exact edition and build rather than assuming that every Windows product includes the same controls.
