biwinrt.dll Missing? Check Windows Integrity Before Reinstalling

biwinrt.dll is a Microsoft Windows system component, not a game or Visual C++ runtime file. If Windows says it is missing, cannot load it, or names it in a background-task crash, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

What this file actually does

The recorded description for biwinrt.dll is Windows Background Broker Infrastructure. It belongs to Windows Runtime and background-task infrastructure, which Windows and some Store applications use for work that continues outside the main application window.

Microsoft update documentation lists Biwinrt.dll among Windows files, including older Windows update packages. Binary metadata also identifies Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft Windows as the company and product, although that metadata is corroborating information rather than a dedicated Microsoft product page.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:

  • C:WindowsSystem32biwinrt.dll for the 64-bit copy
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64biwinrt.dll for the 32-bit copy

The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. A 64-bit installation can need both copies because it runs both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. Microsoft explains this file-system redirection in its System32 and SysWOW64 documentation.

Causes of biwinrt.dll errors

What you see Most likely explanation Start here
“biwinrt.dll is missing” or “was not found” before an application opens A Windows component is missing, corrupted, quarantined, or inaccessible Run DISM, then SFC
“The specified module could not be found” biwinrt.dll may be missing, or a dependency required by it may be missing Repair Windows, then investigate the calling application
“The program can’t start” for every application Broader Windows corruption or servicing damage Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC
backgroundTaskHost.exe names biwinrt.dll as the faulting module A Windows or Store application background task may be crashing even though the DLL exists Identify and repair the named application
The file disappeared after a security scan Antivirus quarantine or a false positive Review Protection history before restoring anything
The file is outside the Windows directory or unsigned Unauthorized replacement or malware is possible Scan the system and do not copy the file back
The problem began after manually copying a DLL Wrong architecture, wrong Windows build, or an incompatible replacement Remove the replacement where possible and repair Windows

The wording varies by Windows version and application. These messages are generic loader or crash messages, not proof that the DLL itself is always the cause.

Fix biwinrt.dll missing or not found errors

1. Install pending Windows updates

Windows servicing is the safest first step because it can restore protected system components using the correct files for the installed build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Reopen the application that showed the error.

If the error returns, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not use a DLL download site as the next step.

2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. It can take some time and may appear to pause.
  2. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the affected program.

SFC may report that it repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or found corruption that it could not repair. The result tells you what to do next:

  • Found and repaired corrupted files: restart and test again.
  • Found no integrity violations: investigate the application, dependencies, quarantine history, or crash report.
  • Could not repair some files: run DISM again, check Windows Update, and continue to the recovery steps below.

If Windows Update itself is damaged, DISM can use a matching repair source:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example. It must point to a compatible Windows installation source. Using an arbitrary source can create a version mismatch.

To extract SFC details from the CBS log, run:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"

This places sfcdetails.txt on the desktop for review.

Repeatedly hunting for a matching DLL or rerunning SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows detected issues; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than a requirement for Windows repair.

3. Determine whether the file is actually present

Do not assume that a loader message proves the named file is absent. Check the expected directories without downloading anything.

  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select the address bar.
  3. Enter %SystemRoot%System32.
  4. Search for biwinrt.dll.
  5. On 64-bit Windows, also check %SystemRoot%SysWOW64.

If the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when available. An unexpected location, missing signature, or recently changed file is a reason to scan the computer rather than copy over it.

If the file is present but an application reports that a module cannot be found, one of its dependencies may be missing. A crash report naming biwinrt.dll also does not prove that the DLL is corrupt.

4. Repair the application that triggers the error

If the problem occurs only when one application starts, treat it as an application branch after repairing Windows.

For a Microsoft Store application in Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.
  9. If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available.

Reset can remove the application’s local data and settings, so use it after Repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Right-click the program.
  5. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  6. Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows.

For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Scan and repair, or equivalent option. The exact menu depends on the launcher. If repair fails, reinstall the affected application using its official installer or the Microsoft Store listing.

Reinstalling the application is particularly important when the error appears only in that program. It can restore application files and dependencies, but it should not replace protected Windows files manually.

5. Investigate backgroundTaskHost.exe crashes

A different situation occurs when Event Viewer reports something similar to:

  • Faulting application: backgroundTaskHost.exe
  • Faulting module: biwinrt.dll

This means a Windows background-task host crashed while handling a background task. The DLL can exist and still appear as the faulting module. Examples can involve Store applications, device utilities, assistant features, or vendor background services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To identify the application:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type eventvwr.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Expand Windows Logs.
  5. Select Application.
  6. Find the error at the time of the crash.
  7. Open the event and record the application name, package name, faulting module, and exception code.

If the event identifies a specific application, update it, then use Repair, Reset, or reinstall it. Do not assume that Windows itself needs to be reinstalled merely because biwinrt.dll is listed.

If the crash happens only in one user profile, test the application in a new Windows user profile. That is a diagnostic step, not proof that the DLL is damaged.

6. Check antivirus quarantine and run a scan

If the file disappeared immediately after a security scan, review quarantine before restoring anything.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections around the time the DLL disappeared.
  5. Expand a detection to see its path and action.

Only restore or allow a file after confirming its location, digital signature, and legitimacy. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the available actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a full scan. If the file is outside the Windows directory, unsigned, recently created, or accompanied by suspicious behavior, treat malware or unauthorized replacement as possible. Do not restore it simply because an application requests it.

7. Check architecture and avoid manual copying

A 32-bit application can require the 32-bit copy in SysWOW64, while a 64-bit application normally uses the copy in System32. Copying a 32-bit DLL into System32, or taking a file from another Windows build, can create a new loader failure.

Avoid overwriting either directory manually. A replacement from another computer may have the wrong architecture, servicing level, signature, or dependencies. The preferred repair path is DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or an official Windows recovery process.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET packages as a first response. There is no evidence that biwinrt.dll belongs to those runtimes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair tool.

Do not use this as a routine fix:

regsvr32 biwinrt.dll

A Windows Runtime system library may not provide the required registration entry point. The command can return an error stating that the module was loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found, and it will not restore a missing or corrupted Windows component.

9. Update drivers only when the crash identifies a device component

A driver update is not the primary repair for biwinrt.dll, but it is reasonable when the crash began with a device utility or Windows hardware component.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the suspected device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a laptop, printer, graphics device, or other hardware, use the manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows does not find a suitable driver. Avoid replacing biwinrt.dll to compensate for a driver problem.

Identifying which of many drivers is stale can be tedious, especially when the fault is intermittent. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing detected driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required for every biwinrt.dll case.

10. Use Windows recovery when repair does not work

If DISM, SFC, application repair, and security checks do not resolve the issue, escalate without deleting system files.

On supported Windows 11 installations:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts.

Microsoft says this reinstalls the same Windows version and repairs system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings.

If that option is unavailable, consider System Restore, an in-place Windows reinstall, or Reset this PC according to the situation. Back up important data first. System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files, while reset and reinstall choices can remove applications or data depending on the selected option.

Frequently asked questions

Is biwinrt.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is a Windows system component associated with Windows Background Broker Infrastructure and Windows Runtime background-task functionality.

Should I download biwinrt.dll from a DLL website?

No. Random downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an invalid signature, or a build incompatible with Windows. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or the affected application’s official installer.

Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?

The message can refer to a dependency required by the DLL or application. It can also indicate an architecture mismatch or a damaged application installation.

Does backgroundTaskHost.exe prove that biwinrt.dll is broken?

No. It identifies a crash location, not necessarily the root cause. Find the package or application associated with the background task and repair that application if the DLL exists.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need both 32-bit and 64-bit copies?

A 64-bit Windows installation can use both. System32 is normally the 64-bit directory, and SysWOW64 is the 32-bit directory.

What information is useful when asking for help?

Record the Windows version and build, exact error text, application name, file path, Event Viewer faulting application, and the final DISM and SFC results. This distinguishes a missing Windows component from an application crash or unrelated dependency failure.
