For most newcomers with a PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or suitable PC, play Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. It is Ubisoft Singapore’s ground-up 2026 remake, with rebuilt presentation, revised combat and stealth, new scenes and quests, and current accessibility options. Choose the original 2013 game instead if you have a PS4 or Switch, want the unaltered historical design and presentation, or specifically want the Switch Rebel Collection’s documented single-player DLC, including Freedom Cry. Neither version is a dependable multiplayer purchase: Resynced is explicitly solo-only, while an online feature label on an original-game store page does not prove that matchmaking still works.

Which version should you play first?
Play Resynced first if this is your first voyage with Edward Kenway and you own supported current hardware. Its modernized systems, expanded solo material and accessibility settings make it the more capable starting point, while its central adventure remains the same Black Flag story rather than a replacement for it.
Play the original first if your priority is historical preservation, the 2013 visual and mechanical identity, PS4 or Switch compatibility, or access to the Switch collection’s documented single-player extras. There is no objective winner in the design differences: Resynced changes how the game plays, so the right choice depends on whether you want refinement or an untouched period piece.

What is different in Black Flag Resynced?
Resynced rebuilds the game and changes several systems instead of simply increasing resolution. Ubisoft describes rebuilt assets, ray tracing, upgraded weather and water, and more seamless movement between sailing and land. Ubisoft’s launch material also lists “many refinements and additions to core features,” a point game designer Maksym Smolynets made in the company’s accessibility interview.
Combat and stealth
- Ground combat adds parry-based interactions that are not presented as the original game’s unchanged system.
- You can crouch anywhere, and stealth responds to light, creating a more explicit relationship between position and visibility.
- Parkour has been altered rather than merely animated at a higher resolution.
- Returning original-game takedown animations are included in title update 1.0.8.
Naval play and world activities
- Resynced adds naval weapons and officers, expanding the ship-management and combat toolset.
- New scenes, quests and story arcs add material around the original adventure. They do not remove Edward Kenway’s central campaign.
- Sailing-to-land transitions are designed to be smoother, reducing the hard breaks between ship travel and exploration described for the 2013 release.
What “remake” means here
These are documented design differences, not a promise that every player will prefer the new handling. Someone studying the original’s 2013 balance, animation timing or presentation may reasonably value the older release precisely because Resynced changes those things.
What content does each version include?
Do not treat the two purchases as interchangeable packages. Resynced is a solo remake, while The Rebel Collection is the documented route to the original game’s single-player DLC on Switch.
Resynced’s campaign and updates
Ubisoft explicitly excludes multiplayer from Resynced. The remake’s title update 1.0.8 was scheduled for October 27, 2026 and adds New Game+, Nightmare Mode and the returning takedown animations. Ubisoft calls it the final major content update, while saying quality-of-life updates may follow over the coming months; its notes state, “The team will follow-up with quality-of-life updates over the coming months.”
Nightmare Mode is a selectable challenge setting, not a measurement of the whole game’s difficulty: Ubisoft specifies 1.8× enemy damage for that mode.
Original DLC and the Switch collection
The Rebel Collection on Nintendo Switch explicitly includes the original single-player DLC, including Freedom Cry, as well as Rogue. A report quoting creative director Paul Fu says the old DLC was omitted from Resynced, so do not assume that buying the remake grants Freedom Cry. Can you play Resynced on PS4 or Switch?
No. Resynced is listed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC; it is not a PS4 release and does not appear in the Switch Rebel Collection. The original is the practical choice on PS4, and the Switch version is the practical choice on Nintendo’s hybrid console.
The original PS4 release is playable on PS5 through backward compatibility. That gives PS5 owners two distinct routes: the current-generation remake or the older game running as the PS4 version. Steam Deck owners should note that Resynced has an official Steam Deck Verified listing; that status confirms Valve’s compatibility classification, not a guaranteed frame rate.
How do graphics and frame-rate options compare?
Resynced is the version designed around current-generation rendering. Ubisoft cites rebuilt assets, ray tracing, revised weather and water, and more seamless traversal. The original retains its 2013 asset work and presentation, which can be an advantage for players who want the game as it was designed and released.
On PS5, Ubisoft publishes three graphics modes:

What PC hardware does Resynced require?
Resynced has a substantially higher published PC threshold than the older game. Ubisoft lists 16 GB of dual-channel RAM and 65 GB of storage on an SSD with a DRAM cache. Minimum GPU examples are an NVIDIA GTX 1660 with 6 GB, AMD RX 5500 XT with 8 GB or Intel Arc A580 with 8 GB.
- Memory: 16 GB dual-channel RAM.

- Platform note: Ubisoft’s published original-game PC page has a confusing “Xbox (Digital)” heading over its system-requirements section. Do not interpret that heading as an Xbox hardware requirement; the older requirements are simply from a much earlier PC generation.
Because the listed GPU examples and SSD requirement are minimum specifications, they are a compatibility threshold, not a promised quality preset or frame-rate result. Check the current Ubisoft Store listing before buying if your PC is near the limit.

Which version has better accessibility options?
Resynced has the more extensively documented accessibility layer. Ubisoft lists separate difficulty controls for naval combat, ground combat, activities and stealth, allowing you to adjust parts of the experience rather than selecting only one global setting.
Other documented options include control remapping, skippable quick-time events, aim assistance, underwater-oxygen adjustments, shark adjustments, a camera dot, subtitle controls and navigation assistance. These options can matter more than visual upgrades for a first playthrough, especially if you want to tune stealth or naval difficulty independently.

Is Resynced worth buying if you already own the original?
Buy Resynced if you want its changed systems and added material, not merely a cleaner picture. The remake makes sense for a returning player who wants new scenes and quests, revised ground combat, light-sensitive stealth, altered parkour, additional naval tools, current-generation presentation or the new accessibility controls.
Keep playing the original if you are satisfied with its campaign, want the 2013 balance and presentation preserved, need the PS4 version, or specifically want Freedom Cry through the documented Switch collection. Owning the original does not make Resynced mandatory, and buying Resynced does not replace the original if preservation or DLC access is your goal.
Can Resynced be played offline, and what about multiplayer?
The Resynced campaign can work offline after an initial connection. Ubisoft says a one-time connection is required to download the game; after that, the campaign works offline. Live features in the Animus Hub require connectivity, so “offline campaign” does not mean every menu or service remains available without the internet.

Resynced has no multiplayer. The original’s PlayStation listing mentions up to eight online players with PlayStation Plus and carries a multiplayer label, but store metadata does not prove that matchmaking is currently operational. An indexed Ubisoft support notice records Wii U online-service retirement on April 8, 2024; the present status of original-game services on other platforms remains unresolved. Treat either version as a single-player purchase unless you verify a specific platform’s service status immediately before playing.
How much do the editions cost, and what do they include?
US PlayStation listings showed the following prices when checked in October 2026. Prices, stock, subscriptions and regional availability can change.

Ubisoft also documents a Collector’s Edition with a console disc, figurine, SteelBook and other physical items, but its listing currently says SOLD OUT. Availability should therefore be treated as stock-sensitive rather than as a normal alternative to Standard or Deluxe.
Ubisoft Store access, Ubisoft+ and Ubisoft-listed GeForce Now and Blacknut streaming are possible access routes, but catalogues and regional terms change. Confirm that the exact edition and platform you want are included before subscribing.
Should you play the original before Resynced?
No prerequisite exists. Resynced is intended to stand on its own and keeps Edward Kenway’s main adventure at its center. Playing the original first is worthwhile only if you want a direct before-and-after comparison, care about the 2013 design as historical context, or intend to experience the original DLC separately.
- Choose your hardware path. On PS4 or Switch, start with the original because Resynced is unavailable there. On PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC, both the remake and the original’s backward-compatible PS4 route are possible.
- Decide whether preservation or revision matters more. Pick the original for unchanged 2013 systems and presentation; pick Resynced for revised combat, stealth, traversal and modern presentation.
- Check your content requirement. If Freedom Cry or the documented Rebel Collection package is essential, select the Switch collection or another original-game release that explicitly includes it.
- Check your connection preference. Resynced needs an initial download connection and supports an offline campaign afterward, but it has no multiplayer. Do not purchase either version on the assumption that an old online listing guarantees active servers.
- Check the price difference in your region. The October 2026 US listings put the remake above the original PS4 listing; a sale, subscription catalogue or physical-stock change can alter the value calculation.

Is there an art book for Black Flag Resynced?

Does Nightmare Mode change enemy health or damage?
