Black Ops Royale is a free-to-play Warzone mode that brings Blackout-inspired scavenging and combat to Avalon, with a different set of rules from standard Warzone Battle Royale. It is not a remake of Black Ops 4’s Blackout. And while the name suggests a revival, official sources describe the mode’s design—not any proven increase in Warzone players or engagement.
What is Black Ops Royale?
Black Ops Royale is a free-to-play battle royale mode within Call of Duty: Warzone. Activision describes it as a modern experience influenced by Blackout, the battle royale mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The new mode takes ideas from Blackout but adapts them for Warzone rather than recreating the original game.
Activision’s deep dive puts the distinction plainly: “This isn’t a remake; it’s a unique experience that pays homage to the Blackout core gameplay while keeping the flow of a match feeling right for Call of Duty: Warzone players.”
How a Black Ops Royale match works
Players drop into Avalon and scavenge
Matches take place on Avalon, with 100 players divided into 25 teams of four, according to the official mode deep dive. Players deploy with a wingsuit and a pistol, then search for weapons and resources as the battle area shrinks. Scavenging—not selecting a prepared loadout—is how teams build up their gear.

There are no loadouts, cash, Buy Stations, or Gulag
Black Ops Royale removes several familiar systems from standard Warzone Battle Royale: players do not start with custom loadouts, there is no in-game cash or Buy Station, and there is no Gulag. Activision says the goal is for everyone to start on equal footing and gear up by exploring and looting. That makes early decisions about where to land and what to pick up central to the match.
Blackout influences the combat and pacing
Activision cites Blackout’s scavenging, bullet drop, weapon handling, armor, Trauma Kits, traversal, pacing, and combat feel as influences. These are design references, not a claim that every system works exactly as it did in Black Ops 4. The developers describe adapting Blackout’s approach for Warzone’s current audience and flow.

The table compares only details established in the cited official material; it does not imply that unspecified systems are absent from either of the other modes. Black Ops Royale and Blackout share the broad battle royale idea of scavenging while trying to outlast other teams, but the new mode is a distinct Warzone experience. Activision announced Black Ops 4 as available worldwide on October 12, 2018; that history does not mean owning Black Ops 4 is required to play Warzone.
Why Activision brought Blackout ideas into Warzone
Warzone game director Pete Actipis told Xbox Wire that “It felt like the right time to bring a new experience to Warzone that was rooted in Call of Duty’s first Battle Royale.” He said the team began with Avalon and that members of the team behind the original Blackout map were involved in developing it. The stated aim was to recapture Blackout’s pacing and combat style in a modern setting, not duplicate the mode exactly.

That explains the “splashes of Blackout” in the title: the influence is visible in the emphasis on scavenging and match feel, while the setting and rules make this a Warzone mode. It does not establish that Black Ops Royale has measurably revived Warzone. Activision and the developers have not published player-retention or engagement figures demonstrating that result in the sources cited here.
Is Black Ops Royale free, and do you need Black Ops 7?
Activision describes Black Ops Royale as free-to-play and available to Warzone players. The official materials cited here do not expressly state whether owning Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is required, so they do not support a definitive claim about that requirement. They also do not identify a paid copy of Black Ops 4 as necessary; Black Ops 4 is relevant as the original home of Blackout, not as a stated access requirement for this Warzone mode.

Is Black Ops Royale still available?
Raven Software’s October 7, 2026 Season 06 patch notes call Season 06 the last chance to play Black Ops Royale and earn its listed weapon camos. The notes do not give an exact date when the season or mode ends, and they do not say whether the mode will return afterward. Check Warzone’s current in-game playlist and official updates for its live status rather than assuming it remains available after Season 06.
