After Blizzard titles went offline when its previous publishing arrangement with NetEase expired in January 2023, Blizzard, Microsoft Gaming and NetEase announced a renewed agreement in April 2024. The games began returning sequentially from summer 2024.
By 2025 and early 2026, NetEase was reporting record-high annual revenue for Blizzard titles, stronger licensed-game revenue overall and stable operations with continued localized content. That makes the comeback an important test of a new, more regional and partnership-driven model for international games in China—not proof that every Western publisher has entered an open new era.

What happened between Blizzard and NetEase?
Blizzard and NetEase had worked together for more than 15 years before their publishing relationship broke down. The previous arrangement expired in January 2023, taking several Blizzard services offline in mainland China.

On April 9, 2024, U.S. time—April 10 in China—Blizzard Entertainment and NetEase announced a renewed publishing agreement, with Microsoft Gaming included in the arrangement. The companies said Blizzard titles would return sequentially beginning in summer 2024. The announcement preserved the core Blizzard portfolio previously available through the mainland-China service.
The agreement covers World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, other games in the Warcraft universe, Overwatch, Diablo and StarCraft. It does not mean that every game returned on the same day, received identical treatment or followed the global release schedule. The relevant geography is mainland China; Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan should not automatically be treated as having the same service arrangements.
NetEase’s announcement provides the companies’ account of the renewed agreement and its covered franchises.

World of Warcraft carries unusual weight because its value is not limited to the software itself. The game had a long operating history in China, a deeply established player community and social systems built around guilds, raids, characters and years of accumulated progress.
When the service shut down, players lost access not only to a game but also to a shared social space and long-term digital possessions. A returning player might care about old characters, collections, guild relationships, achievements and memories as much as about the next expansion.
That history made the relaunch a test of trust. Could a live-service game rebuild its community after a prolonged interruption? Could account, character and entitlement issues be handled well enough for former players to return? And could the partnership deliver a stable service rather than another short-lived restoration?
Historical audience figures need careful handling. Reuters reported in 2024 that Chinese media had estimated roughly five million World of Warcraft players in China in 2009. That is useful context for the game’s historical importance, but it is not a current player count for 2024, 2025 or 2026.

The strongest evidence that the comeback worked
NetEase reported strong returning-player engagement
NetEase said the return of World of Warcraft and Hearthstone generated strong enthusiasm in China, supported by localized events and community activity. Its 2024 results commentary described particularly strong momentum around World of Warcraft.
Those statements are company-reported indicators rather than an independently audited player count. They show that the relaunch produced meaningful attention and activity, but they do not by themselves reveal retention, daily active users or the profitability of any individual title.
NetEase’s FY2024 results filing describes the return and its reported reception.
Licensed-game revenue rose sharply in 2025
The clearest public financial signal came in NetEase’s 2025 reporting. Revenue from licensed games increased 37.8%, from RMB7.8 billion in 2024 to RMB10.8 billion in 2025. NetEase attributed part of that increase to the launch of Blizzard titles in mainland China.
NetEase also said Blizzard titles achieved record-high annual revenue in 2025 and sustained engagement in China. The wording matters: this is evidence of substantial commercial traction, but it is not a separately disclosed, audited World of Warcraft-China revenue line. The reported licensed-game figure covers NetEase’s licensed business, and Blizzard is only one contributor.
Nor should the Blizzard relaunch be described as the sole cause of the increase. NetEase’s own attribution is that it contributed partly to the growth.

The relationship moved beyond a launch spike
In its first-quarter 2026 investor materials, NetEase said Blizzard titles maintained stable operations in China and continued receiving localized content. That suggests the arrangement had moved from emergency restoration toward an ongoing operating model.
It still does not guarantee permanent stability. Live-service performance depends on future updates, expansions, approvals, support and continued agreement between the licensor and local publisher. NetEase’s filings specifically warn that licensed games depend on factors controlled partly by licensors, including updates and ongoing support.
NetEase’s Q1 2026 investor presentation describes the reported operating status.
Why NetEase is more than a distributor
The business model is often simplified as Blizzard owning the games and NetEase distributing them. In practice, a mainland-China live service requires much more than a download link.
NetEase supplies local publishing and operating expertise, including customer support, community management, localization, regional marketing, service infrastructure and navigation of local compliance requirements. It can also organize events and content around the Chinese service rather than treating China as a passive endpoint for a global release.
That distinction is central to the comeback. Localization can include translation, but it can also involve event design, release sequencing, regional rewards, support systems, server strategy and community calendars. NetEase’s disclosures emphasize localized events and content, supporting the view that the Chinese service is being managed as a regional product.
The trade-off is reduced simplicity. A separate regional service can respond better to local conditions, but it may also have different content schedules, promotions, servers, customer-support processes and monetization from the global version. A global patch date does not establish the release date on Chinese servers.
From one title to a portfolio strategy
The agreement’s scope matters because it covers several major franchises rather than a single game. The portfolio spans an MMO, a digital card game, a competitive shooter, action RPGs and strategy properties.

That gives the partnership a broader operating base. In principle, the companies can spread local infrastructure, support capacity, community expertise and marketing investment across multiple releases. They can also build a more consistent calendar instead of depending entirely on one title.
Those are strategic implications of the portfolio, not announced promises of shared accounts, cross-franchise marketing or common infrastructure. The public agreement establishes the range of franchises, not identical product treatment for each one.
NetEase materials also identify China-specific and staged Blizzard developments, including a World of Warcraft Titan Reforged server. Such examples should be read as evidence of regional customization, while remembering that individual release schedules and features can change.
The return of Overwatch 2 in February 2025, described in NetEase’s FY2024 results materials, further illustrates that “return to China” was a sequence of launches rather than a single switch being turned back on.
What Microsoft changes
The original relationship was usually framed as Blizzard and NetEase. The renewed announcement explicitly includes Microsoft Gaming because Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard. That places the agreement inside a larger platform and portfolio strategy.
Microsoft Gaming and NetEase also announced a broader collaboration exploring the arrival of NetEase titles on Xbox and other platforms. This introduces a two-way element: the relationship is not only about Microsoft’s Blizzard franchises reaching mainland China, but may also create routes for NetEase games to reach Microsoft platforms.
The wording should not be stretched further. The announcement does not establish a fully open Xbox-China ecosystem, a completed pipeline of NetEase launches or a guaranteed slate of games. It establishes exploration and cooperation, not a finished distribution strategy.

- Updated and reconstructed visuals to be far more realistic and richly textured vs the original game
- Upgraded models for each character, graphical updates for a more immersive environment
- Estimated gameplay hours: 40 to 50 per title
- Sound: Players will be able to choose between original sound and the new, re-arranged sound
Why this could represent a new gaming era
The “new era” thesis is most convincing when applied to the operating model rather than to the size of the relaunch.

1. Regional services may replace simple global parity
International publishers have often wanted one global product with limited regional variation. The Blizzard-NetEase arrangement points toward something more negotiated: a global franchise operated through a local partner, with regional schedules, support, events and compliance built into the product.
For players, that can mean a service better adapted to local needs. For publishers, it means accepting that market access may depend on local operational expertise and less direct control over the player relationship.
2. Localization becomes an operating function
Language support is only the visible part of localization. The harder work is maintaining a community, handling support, adapting events and keeping the service compliant over years. A game can be technically translated and still feel poorly supported; a regional publisher can make those operational details part of the product itself.
3. Mature franchises can regain value through local infrastructure
NetEase’s reported record-high annual revenue for Blizzard titles suggests that established intellectual property can still generate strong commercial results when a service returns with local support. But World of Warcraft is an exceptional case, with decades of brand recognition, social depth and historical presence in China. Its performance does not prove that every older Western franchise can reproduce the result.
4. Cross-border deals may become more reciprocal
The wider Microsoft-NetEase collaboration hints at a model in which platform owners and Chinese publishers exchange access rather than treating distribution as a one-way transaction. Whether that develops into a meaningful pipeline remains unproven.
The limits of the comeback
A relaunch is not the same as durable retention
Players returning after a shutdown can create a powerful burst of activity and spending. Some of that demand may be pent-up demand rather than a permanent increase in the audience. The more important tests are what happens after the initial return: recurring engagement, expansion performance, content cadence and the ability to retain new and returning players.
Revenue growth does not reveal margin quality
Licensed-game revenue is shared with rights holders and is not economically identical to revenue from a company’s own games. NetEase has noted that licensed games generally provide relatively less profit than its internally developed titles. A larger revenue figure therefore does not automatically mean equivalent profit growth.
NetEase’s 2024 Form 20-F discusses that trade-off.
The 2023 breakdown remains part of the risk calculation
Players and investors have a reason to care about operational continuity. The previous shutdown demonstrated that even a highly established service can disappear when a licensing relationship fails. The renewed agreement is evidence of cooperation, not an irrevocable guarantee against future commercial disputes.
Regulation and approvals still matter
Returning a game to mainland China requires more than agreement between two companies. Ongoing operations remain exposed to approvals, compliance requirements, content rules and changes in the regulatory environment. A successful relaunch therefore cannot be treated as proof that mainland China has reopened equally to every foreign game.
Legacy success does not equal a new-product renaissance
The comeback demonstrates the strength of a particular portfolio and a particular local relationship. It does not show that new Western games, unrelated publishers or every legacy franchise will receive the same reception or obtain the same access.
What to watch next
- Durability: whether engagement remains strong beyond the relaunch period.
- Release parity: whether major patches and expansions arrive without extended delays relative to other regions.
- Localization depth: whether regional events, support and community programs continue rather than appearing only at launch.
- Portfolio performance: whether the model works across more than World of Warcraft.
- Operational trust: whether Blizzard and NetEase can maintain continuity after the memory of the 2023 shutdown.
- Regulatory resilience: whether the services can sustain approvals and compliant operations over time.
- Strategic reciprocity: whether the Microsoft-NetEase collaboration results in meaningful two-way distribution.
Readers seeking access should use the relevant official regional service and current Blizzard or NetEase support guidance. A global Battle.net account, payment method or subscription should not be assumed to be interchangeable with the mainland-China service, and a VPN is not an official solution.

For investors, the most useful evidence remains NetEase’s filings and earnings materials. The cited disclosures do not provide a separately audited World of Warcraft-China revenue figure, so claims about the title’s exact financial contribution should remain qualified.
Conclusion
Blizzard’s China comeback is best understood as a blueprint, not a guarantee. It shows that a global publisher, a major platform owner and a Chinese operating partner can rebuild a live-service business around a portfolio of established franchises. It also shows why local publishing, compliance, support and community management are strategic functions rather than administrative details.
The result may point to a more pragmatic and regionally customized phase of the international games business. But the evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “China is fully open again” or “every Western game can repeat WoW’s success.” The real new era, if it develops, will be defined by durable partnerships and sustained operations—not by the emotional impact of one server reopening.
