Java Edition: lower the maximum heap in the Minecraft Launcher by changing the -Xmx value, usually to 2–4 GB depending on your computer’s total RAM. Bedrock Edition: there is no normal Java-style heap setting, so reduce Video settings, render distance, simulation distance, graphics effects, and resource-pack complexity instead.
First check whether Minecraft is actually exhausting RAM. High memory readings can also mean reserved Java heap, cached system memory, VRAM pressure, garbage-collection stutters, CPU limits, or server lag.

Identify what “too much memory” means
Java Edition has several different memory figures:
- Allocated heap: the maximum Java heap available to the game, controlled by
-Xmx. - Used heap: how much of that heap is occupied right now.
- Total process memory: everything Minecraft’s Java process uses, including native libraries, threads, mapped files, and graphics-related allocations.
- System RAM: memory used by Minecraft, the operating system, browsers, Discord, launchers, antivirus software, and other programs.
- VRAM: dedicated graphics memory. Shaders and high-resolution textures can exhaust VRAM without a system-RAM shortage.
On Windows, open Task Manager while Minecraft is running and compare Memory, CPU, GPU, and Dedicated GPU memory. On macOS, use Activity Monitor; on Linux, use your desktop’s system monitor or tools such as top or htop.
Java players can also press F3 to view the in-game heap display. It is useful for spotting heap pressure, but it is not the game’s complete operating-system footprint.

Java Edition: lower the memory allocation
Back up important worlds before changing JVM settings. Mojang’s memory-allocation guidance recommends making a backup before troubleshooting.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and sign in.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open Installations.
- Select the installation profile you actually play.
- Choose More Options.
- Copy the complete JVM Arguments field into a text file.
- Find an argument resembling
-Xmx4G. - Change only the number, keeping the unit: for example, change
-Xmx4Gto-Xmx2G. - Save the installation and launch that same profile.
-Xmx sets the maximum heap. Examples include:
-Xmx2G
-Xmx4G
-Xmx6G
-Xmx6144M
Do not delete the entire JVM argument string, change -Xms without a specific reason, or add old “FPS boost” flags from an unverified guide. If the game will not launch, restore the backed-up arguments exactly. A malformed value such as -Xmx4, deleting required flags, or editing the wrong profile can prevent startup.
Safe starting points by total system RAM
| Total RAM | Starting allocation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4 GB or less | 2 GB | Mojang specifically recommends reducing Java allocation to 2 GB on these systems. Close other applications. |
| 8 GB | 2–4 GB | Leave several gigabytes for the operating system and background programs. |
| 16 GB | 4–6 GB | A practical starting range for vanilla or lightly modded play. |
| 32 GB or more | 4–8 GB | Increase only when a large modpack or other workload genuinely needs it. |
These are starting points, not universal requirements. Mojang describes half of total RAM as a recommended maximum on 64-bit systems, not an amount every player should allocate. Giving Minecraft all of an 8 GB or 16 GB computer’s memory can cause paging and make the whole system less responsive.
Why Minecraft may use more RAM after Java 26.1
Java Edition 26.1 changed the default allocation from 2 GB to 4 GB and changed the default garbage collector to ZGC on compatible devices. That is an allocation change, not proof that every world requires 4 GB.
On a computer with 4 GB of total RAM, a 4 GB allocation leaves no practical room for the operating system or other software. Set -Xmx2G instead. On an 8 GB computer, do not assign the entire machine to Minecraft.

Third-party launchers may not use the official Launcher’s defaults. If you play through another launcher, change the memory setting in that launcher or its individual instance rather than assuming the official profile controls it.
Reduce Java Edition’s memory demand
Lower render distance
Render distance controls how far away chunks and visible objects are drawn. High values increase client rendering, world-loading, CPU, GPU, and sometimes memory pressure. As a troubleshooting starting point, try 8–12 chunks, then raise it gradually if the game remains stable.

Simulation distance controls how far gameplay continues to tick. Entities, crops, fluids, redstone, and other activity can continue over this area. Lower it separately from render distance, especially in a busy base or single-player world where the integrated server shares your computer’s resources.
Turn down expensive effects
Disable shaders first. They usually stress the GPU and VRAM more than ordinary system RAM, but can contribute to overall pressure. Also test with lower or disabled:
- Fancy graphics, clouds, particles, and entity shadows
- Smooth lighting and biome blend
- Weather and FOV effects
- High entity-distance settings
- High-resolution or heavily animated resource packs
Java 26.2 also introduced Graphics API choices: Default, Prefer Vulkan (Experimental), and Prefer OpenGL. Mojang recommends Default unless troubleshooting requires another option; Vulkan is experimental and may reduce performance or cause instability. It is not a direct replacement for changing -Xmx. See the Java 26.2 release notes.

Check entities and loaded areas
Large animal pens, villager halls, item piles, minecarts, armor stands, particles, redstone machines, and permanently loaded areas can increase both memory and simulation work. Temporarily move away from a crowded base or test a new world to see whether the symptom follows the world.

Vanilla, lightly modded, and large modpack installations have very different requirements. A modpack launcher may have its own per-instance memory setting that overrides the official Launcher profile.
If a modpack crashes from heap exhaustion, more memory may be appropriate—but it will not repair a broken mod, infinite entity buildup, incompatible shader, or memory leak. Troubleshoot in this order:
- Disable shaders.
- Remove the resource pack.
- Test a new world.
- Run only the required loader and mods.
- Disable half the remaining mods, then test the other half to isolate a problem.
- Record the Minecraft version, loader, Java version, mod list, crash report, and latest log before requesting help.
FerriteCore may reduce memory usage in some supported modpacks. Its Modrinth page reports a specific All of Fabric 3 test falling from 1,792 MB to 984 MB, but that is pack-specific evidence, not a guaranteed result. Compatibility depends on the exact Minecraft version, loader, and configuration.
Using Prism Launcher
Prism Launcher is a free alternative that provides clearer per-instance Java and modpack controls. Its Java settings documentation warns that more allocated RAM does not automatically improve performance and says 4 GB is enough in most cases except large modpacks.

Prism does not magically reduce Minecraft’s memory use. Its advantage is profile and instance management. Beginners can use the official Launcher; experienced Java players may prefer Prism for separate vanilla and modded allocations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bedrock Edition: use Video settings instead
Bedrock does not expose Java’s normal -Xmx heap control. On PC, console, mobile, and Chromebook, open Settings → Video. Exact labels and maximum values vary by platform and hardware.
Mojang recommends reducing FOV, disabling Fancy Leaves, Fancy Bubbles, Render Clouds, and other advanced effects, and using Simple Graphics Mode on resource-constrained devices. Turn down or disable Vibrant Visuals and its reflections, bloom, volumetric effects, and similar options when available; Mojang identifies Vibrant Visuals as the most resource-intensive listed graphics mode.
Also reduce render distance and simulation distance. Microsoft explains that simulation distance costs more than render distance because it affects both client rendering and server-side game simulation. Start with lower values, then increase them one at a time.
Recommended Free Tools
Remove high-resolution resource packs and unnecessary behavior packs. Compressed texture-file size is not the same as in-memory texture size, so a small download can still consume substantial graphics memory. Large numbers of entities can also create AI and pathfinding work. Avoid adding Bedrock ticking areas while troubleshooting: the documented /tickingarea add command keeps chunks active and can increase performance cost.

Multiplayer and server cases
Playing on someone else’s server
Lowering local render distance can reduce your client’s workload, but it cannot repair an overloaded server. Distinguish low FPS from delayed actions: if blocks break late, mobs freeze, or inventory actions take time while your FPS is normal, investigate server tick rate, entity counts, plugins, mods, and server hardware.
Hosting locally
A locally hosted Java server and client share the same physical RAM. Lower server view-distance and simulation-distance when appropriate, and do not assign nearly all system memory to the server while also running the client. Back up the server world before editing configuration.
Using paid hosting
More server RAM does not compensate for a weak CPU, excessive entities, high distances, or an inefficient plugin or mod. Modrinth’s server guidance gives general starting points of about 4–6 chunks for simulation distance and 6–12 for view distance, but the right values depend on players, mods, world activity, and hardware. Compare CPU performance, backups, location, support, and mod/plugin compatibility—not RAM alone.
When lowering memory is the wrong fix
- OutOfMemoryError: your allocation may be too low, or a mod/world may be consuming abnormal amounts.
- Gradual growth: test without mods, shaders, and packs and check whether memory falls after leaving the world.
- Low FPS with normal RAM: investigate GPU load, VRAM, CPU load, drivers, frame caps, shaders, and temperatures.
- Freezes while generating terrain: check CPU load, storage speed, render distance, simulation distance, and world-generation mods.
- System freezing or paging: close browsers, overlays, recording software, and other applications; lower allocation; consider adding physical RAM if the entire computer regularly runs short.
- Problems beginning after an update: test the current release without mods and verify loader and mod compatibility.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Identify Java or Bedrock, the exact version, launcher, platform, and whether the problem is local or server-side.
- Check system RAM, CPU, GPU, VRAM, and Minecraft’s heap display while reproducing the issue.
- Back up worlds.
- Set Java to a sensible
-Xmxvalue, or use Bedrock’s Video settings. - Disable shaders and high-resolution packs.
- Lower render distance and simulation distance.
- Test a new world with minimal content.
- For modded Java, isolate mods in groups and save crash reports and logs.
- Only then consider a RAM upgrade, and only if the computer—not merely Minecraft’s FPS—is genuinely running out of memory.
The free fixes are usually enough for vanilla play. More physical RAM helps multitasking and large modpacks only when capacity is the real limitation; it will not fix a GPU bottleneck, server lag, CPU limitation, or faulty mod.
