How to Set Up RetroArch on Your iPhone or iPad

A complete beginner-friendly guide to installing RetroArch on iPhone or iPad, adding legally obtained games, selecting cores, configuring controls, and fixing common problems.

RetroArch is available as a free App Store app for iPhone and iPad. To play a game, install RetroArch, add a legally obtained game file, select the matching emulator core, and load the content. Some systems also need a BIOS file, while demanding cores may be limited because the App Store build does not enable JIT.

This guide uses the normal App Store setup, which is the best choice for most users. You do not need to sideload an IPA just to install RetroArch.

What RetroArch does

RetroArch is a frontend and management framework, not one single emulator. It uses separate libretro cores to run games from different systems.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • RetroArch: The menus, settings, controller configuration, saves, playlists, and launching interface.
  • Core: The emulator or game engine module that runs a particular system.
  • ROM or content: The game or software file loaded by a core.
  • BIOS/system file: Firmware required by some cores or games.
  • Playlist: A library list connecting content to a core.
  • Save file: The game’s normal battery or RAM save.
  • Save state: A snapshot created by RetroArch, separate from the game’s own save system.

The current App Store listing advertises support through various cores for systems including NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, PSP, Sega platforms, arcade systems, DOS, and ScummVM. That list is not a guarantee that every game will run equally well on every iPhone or iPad.

What you need

  • An iPhone running iOS 12 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 12 or later. These are the requirements shown by the current United States App Store listing.
  • Free storage for the approximately 683.2 MB app, game files, BIOS files, artwork, and saves.
  • Legally obtained game files and, where required, BIOS files. RetroArch does not supply copyrighted games or system firmware. Use files you are legally entitled to use, subject to the law where you live.
  • Internet access for the initial asset and metadata updates.
  • An optional Bluetooth, wired, or MFi-compatible controller.

iOS 12 compatibility is only the minimum app requirement. Older devices may not deliver good performance with demanding cores or games.

Install RetroArch from the App Store

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Search for RetroArch.
  3. Confirm that the developer is Libretro and that the listing is the official app.
  4. Tap Get and install it.
  5. Launch RetroArch once and wait for its interface and folders to initialize.

The official Libretro guide records worldwide App Store availability beginning May 15, 2024. Avoid random IPA files, unofficial “preloaded” devices, and ROM packs when the App Store version meets your needs.

Complete the first-run updates

Menu placement can vary. iPhone uses the GLUI interface, while iPad versions after RetroArch 1.19.1 use Ozone by default. Follow the menu names rather than relying on screenshots from another device or version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Online Updater and run these updates where they are available:

  • Update Core Info Files: Metadata describing cores and their supported content.
  • Update Assets: Menus, icons, fonts, and other interface resources.
  • Update Databases: Identification data used for scanning and playlists.
  • Update Overlays: Touch-control layouts and related overlays.
  • Update GLSL Shaders: Optional visual filters supported by relevant video drivers and cores.

Assets, overlays, and core information are useful during setup. Shaders are optional and are not required to launch a first game.

Add game files with the Files app

RetroArch can read content from directories inside its app sandbox.

  • CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
  1. Open the Files app.
  2. Tap Browse.
  3. Choose On My iPhone or On My iPad.
  4. Open the RetroArch folder.
  5. Create a folder such as ROMs. You can also create system-specific folders, plus BIOS or Saves folders for organization.
  6. Copy or move your legally obtained content into the RetroArch folder or one of its subfolders.

The exact folder name is less important than the file being somewhere inside RetroArch’s sandbox. In RetroArch, choose Load Content and browse to the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use Load Content → Open…, iOS opens its system file chooser. Files selected through that chooser are copied to RetroArch’s downloads folder by default.

Other ways to transfer files

  • iCloud Drive: In Files, locate the content, tap and hold it, choose Move or Copy, and place it inside the RetroArch folder. Keep large files downloaded locally if you need reliable offline access.
  • AirDrop: Send the file to the iPhone or iPad, then choose RetroArch or Files when iOS asks how to open or save it. If it lands in Downloads, locate it from RetroArch’s file browser.
  • Mac: Connect the device and use Finder’s device-management and file-sharing interface where RetroArch is shown. Not every iOS app exposes the same sharing controls.
  • Windows: Install Apple’s current Apple Devices app for Windows 10 or later. Connect the device by USB, select it, click Files, select RetroArch if it appears, click Add File, and choose the content. Only apps supporting File Sharing appear in this section.

Choose the correct core

A ROM cannot run by itself. It needs a compatible core for its system and file format.

  1. From RetroArch’s main menu, select Load Core.
  2. Choose a core for the system your game belongs to.
  3. Select Load Content.
  4. Browse to and select the game file.
  5. When prompted, choose Current Core.

The available core list on iOS is not identical to desktop RetroArch. Apple’s code-signing rules mean cores cannot simply be added or updated at runtime in the same way as on Windows, macOS, or Android. The App Store build has a bundled, platform-specific core set. Do not copy random .dylib core files into the App Store sandbox; that is not a supported way to expand it.

If the expected core is missing, update the core information files, check the cores actually included in your iOS build, and try another compatible core. Some advanced cores may be unavailable or unsuitable without JIT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Load and exit your first game

For a first launch, use the manual Load Core → Load Content route. It is easier to diagnose than scanning an entire library.

8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller for iPhone, Apple, Android & Xbox Cloud Gaming, Bluetooth Gamepad with Hall Effect Joysticks, 2 Pro Back Buttons, Officially Licensed (Black)
  • Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
  • Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
  • Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
  • Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.

After a successful launch, RetroArch can create history entries, favorites, or playlists. A playlist associates content with a core so you can select the game and use Run later.

To exit safely, open RetroArch’s Quick Menu and choose Close Content. Avoid force-quitting the app while a game is running, particularly after saving.

Configure touch controls

Touch overlays are fine for turn-based games, puzzle games, RPGs, and slower action. They are usually less comfortable for fighting games, precision platformers, racing games, and titles that require simultaneous shoulder buttons or analog-stick movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Rotate the device to landscape for systems with shoulder buttons or dual analog controls.
  • Adjust the overlay’s position, size, and opacity if your version exposes those controls.
  • Hide or reduce the overlay when using a physical controller.
  • Test the controls in-game before assuming the core or ROM is broken.
  • Keep separate touch and physical-controller configurations if your interface offers that option.

Because GLUI and Ozone place controls differently, the exact overlay menu path can vary between iPhone, iPad, orientation, and RetroArch version.

Connect a Bluetooth or wired controller

  1. Put the controller into pairing mode.
  2. Open iOS or iPadOS Settings → Bluetooth.
  3. Select the controller.
  4. Return to RetroArch and test the buttons and sticks.
  5. If the layout is wrong, open RetroArch’s input settings and remap it.

Apple also provides supported-controller customization under Settings → General → Game Controller, with features varying by controller and app. Apple confirms compatibility for supported PlayStation, Xbox, and MFi controllers, and compatible wired controllers may work through the appropriate adapter.

First confirm that iOS recognizes it outside RetroArch; then remap it inside the app.

Add BIOS files only when a core requires them

A BIOS is firmware from the original hardware. Some cores require it, some use it optionally, and others do not need one at all. Requirements are core-specific.

For example, the official BIOS documentation lists BIOS files as required by Beetle PSX HW and SwanStation, while mGBA and PCSX ReARMed list BIOS support as optional. Check the requirement for the exact core you selected.

  1. Obtain a BIOS dump from hardware you own, where legally permitted.
  2. Check the core’s required filename, capitalization, region, and checksum.
  3. In RetroArch, open Settings → Directory and identify the configured System/BIOS directory.
  4. Place the file in that directory, not merely beside the ROM, unless the core’s documentation says otherwise.

A similarly named BIOS is not necessarily interchangeable. A wrong region, spelling, or checksum can produce a BIOS error or a black screen.

Test normal saves and save states

Use the game’s own save mechanism whenever possible. Save states are convenient snapshots, but they should not be your only copy of progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test both types before building a large library:

  1. Launch a small game.
  2. Make a normal in-game save.
  3. Open the Quick Menu and choose Close Content.
  4. Relaunch the game and confirm the normal save remains.
  5. Create a save state, exit, and reload that state.
  6. Back up important saves before deleting or reinstalling RetroArch.

Save states can depend on the core, content filename, location, and settings. Changing cores or renaming files can make an existing state appear to have disappeared.

Deleting an app can delete its sandboxed files. Apple notes that shared app files are also affected by device backup and app deletion workflows, so copy important ROMs and saves to a computer or another independent location first.

Optional: configure Cloud Sync

RetroArch documents three Cloud Sync backends: WebDAV, iCloud, and iCloud Drive. iCloud uses Apple’s CloudKit database, while iCloud Drive uses file storage; they are distinct options.

  1. Open Settings → Saving → Cloud Sync.
  2. Enable Cloud Sync.
  3. Choose a backend.
  4. Enable save files, save states, and any other categories you want synchronized.
  5. Save the configuration.
  6. Restart RetroArch.

Configure matching directory-sorting settings on other devices. The documentation says synchronization runs at startup, when cores are unloaded, and when RetroArch resumes from the background on iOS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud Sync is synchronization, not a guaranteed independent backup. Make a manual backup first, especially before combining libraries or enabling synchronization on multiple devices. Conflicting or inconsistent directory settings can prevent saves from merging correctly.

App Store version versus sideloading

The App Store build is the right default for most people: installation is simple, there is no signing or certificate management, and no periodic sideload refresh is required.

Sideloading or self-building is for advanced users who need a specific unavailable core, development build, or JIT-related capability. It requires a computer and an Apple signing process, and may introduce provisioning, refresh, or stability problems. Libretro documents Xcode, App Signer, and AltStore-style approaches, while noting that RetroArch is not affiliated with AltStore or iOS App Signer.

JIT is not enabled in the App Store version. Some cores may perform poorly, may be restricted, or may not function as intended without it. This is particularly relevant when experimenting with demanding systems; it does not mean every core or game requires sideloading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
ROM does not appear The file is outside the RetroArch folder, in Downloads, or uses an unsupported format. Use Load Content → Open…, browse to the actual file, confirm its extension, and move it into the RetroArch sandbox if needed.
No cores available The desired core is not bundled in the App Store build, or core metadata is outdated. Update Core Info Files, inspect the available iOS cores, and do not install random core binaries manually.
Failed to load core The core is unavailable, incompatible, mismatched, or dependent on capabilities not provided by the App Store build. Update RetroArch, try another compatible core, and check whether the system needs a sideloaded/JIT-enabled build.
BIOS error Wrong filename, region, capitalization, checksum, or directory. Check the exact core documentation and place the verified BIOS in the directory shown under Settings → Directory.
Black screen or crash Wrong core, missing BIOS, damaged content, unsupported format, graphics setting, or JIT limitation. Try the recommended available core, verify the BIOS, test another legally obtained dump, disable enhancements, and restart RetroArch.
Game runs too fast or audio is wrong A video, audio, threaded-video, shader, or core setting conflict. Disable shaders and enhancements, restore core defaults, and test again before changing multiple settings at once.
Controller connects but buttons are wrong The controller profile or layout does not match the core. Confirm iOS detects it, remap it in RetroArch, save the profile if offered, and check core-specific controls.
Saves are missing The ROM was renamed or moved, the core changed, the app was deleted, or Cloud Sync directories differ. Restore the original filename and location, use the original core, check the save directory, and restore from a manual backup.
Only a sideloaded build works The core or feature may require JIT or is absent from the App Store build. Use the App Store build for supported systems; sideload only if you understand signing, maintenance, and security trade-offs.

Final setup checklist

  • RetroArch installed from the App Store and confirmed as developed by Libretro.
  • RetroArch launched once and its folder located in Files.
