To access The Old Hunters in Bloodborne, own and download the expansion, defeat Vicar Amelia, examine the altar or skull behind her in the Grand Cathedral, then return to Hunter’s Dream and take the Eye of a Blood-Drunk Hunter from a messenger. Travel to Oedon Chapel, leave through the left-hand exit, and walk to the right-hand end of the square. An event there carries you to Hunter’s Nightmare. Light the first lamp, and the new Awakening Headstone in Hunter’s Dream will handle travel between the areas.
You do not need to finish the main game, defeat an optional Amygdala boss, reach a particular character level, or subscribe to an online service. The trigger is tied to your current story cycle, so New Game Plus characters must perform the sequence again after defeating Amelia in that cycle.

What do I need before starting The Old Hunters?
There are two separate requirements: the add-on must be licensed and installed, and your save must have reached the Vicar Amelia checkpoint. The standard game and The Old Hunters are separate Store products, so owning a base-game disc or digital copy alone does not prove that the expansion is included.
The access instructions do not specify a character level, completion of every preceding boss, a Blood Moon, or PlayStation Plus. Those are not entry conditions in the published route. You can therefore plan the trip as soon as Amelia is dead, even if large parts of the main map remain unexplored.

How does DLC ownership work?
Think of the expansion as a license attached to the PlayStation account and a compatible copy of the base game. A digital purchase must be downloaded under the account that is launching Bloodborne. A physical copy must be an edition that includes the expansion, or you must buy the standalone add-on separately. A normal Bloodborne disc label is not proof that The Old Hunters is on the disc or that the account owns it.
Before troubleshooting the in-game trigger, verify the product itself. On PS5, open Game Library → Your collection → Bloodborne → Add-Ons and look for The Old Hunters. On PS4, use Library → Purchased → Bloodborne → PlayStation Store → Your Add-Ons. Menu wording can vary with system software and territory, but the expansion should be listed beneath the base game rather than as a separate game application.

If you bought a used physical copy, read the edition name on the case and disc. The Game of the Year package was sold with the base game and expansion together; a standard release was not automatically converted into that package. For an imported copy, also check the licensed country or region printed on the packaging. Store add-ons generally need to match the disc and account regions.
How do I access The Old Hunters DLC in Bloodborne?
Follow these steps in order. The Eye is awarded only after the story and altar trigger has been completed, and the grab at Oedon Chapel is the actual entrance.
1. Confirm that the expansion is installed
On a PS5, open Game Library → Your collection → Bloodborne → Add-Ons and check that The Old Hunters is owned and installed. On a PS4, open Library → Purchased → Bloodborne → PlayStation Store → Your Add-Ons. The labels can vary slightly by system software and account region, but the add-on should appear under the base game rather than as a separate application.
If you own a physical edition, check the exact package contents. A standard Bloodborne disc is not automatically the expansion edition. If the add-on is a separate digital purchase, make sure it was downloaded completely and that you are using the purchasing account or a console on which that account’s content sharing is active.

Reach the Grand Cathedral and defeat Vicar Amelia. This boss victory is the story gate for the expansion route. You do not have to defeat the entire base game first, and the access instructions do not impose a recommended level. After the victory, remain in the cathedral long enough to locate the object in the area behind the boss arena.
3. Examine the altar or skull behind the boss
After the fight, interact with the altar or skull in the area behind Amelia. The published instructions describe this interaction as changing the in-game time to night. It is not the later Blood Moon event, and you should not wait for a separate lunar-state trigger. If you leave without examining the object, the messenger will not provide the Eye even though Amelia has been defeated.

4. Receive the Eye in Hunter’s Dream
Return to Hunter’s Dream. A messenger gives you the Eye of a Blood-Drunk Hunter. PlayStation’s walkthrough states: “Go to the Hunter’s Dream and receive the Eye of a Blood-Drunk Hunter from a messenger.” The item is the handoff between the cathedral story trigger and the physical entrance in Central Yharnam.
If you do not see the item, do not proceed to the chapel expecting the event to work anyway. Recheck the altar, confirm the add-on license, and reload Hunter’s Dream. The sequence is deliberately ordered: Amelia, object, Dream, Eye.
5. Find the entrance at Oedon Chapel
Travel to Oedon Chapel. Leave through the chapel’s left-hand exit, then cross the square and go to its right-hand end. The grab event at that location transports you to Hunter’s Nightmare. A contemporary guide identifies the unseen grabber as an Amygdala, but you do not need to locate, fight, or even visibly identify the creature to enter. The official route is based on reaching the spot after receiving the Eye.
The event is not a door, elevator, or new option on the ordinary gravestone menu. Walk far enough toward the right side of the square and remain in the area where the event occurs. If the grab does not trigger, return to Hunter’s Dream and verify that the Eye is actually in your inventory before searching the square again.
6. Light the Hunter’s Nightmare lamp
Once you arrive in Hunter’s Nightmare, light the nearby lamp before exploring. This establishes the area as a destination. Returning to Hunter’s Dream afterward reveals an Awakening Headstone for Hunter’s Nightmare; use it to travel back and forth rather than relying on the original grab event each time.
Lighting the lamp is therefore more than a convenience. It gives you a reliable return route, lets you leave to spend Blood Echoes or change equipment, and prevents the first chapel trip from being your only way back into the expansion.

Where is the DLC entrance?
The entrance is not a door inside the Grand Cathedral and it is not reached through a new option on the standard gravestone menu. It is an invisible-world event in the square outside Oedon Chapel.
- Start at the Oedon Chapel lamp.
- Exit through the chapel’s left-hand doorway.
- Move across the square toward the far-right end.
- Stand in the area where the event occurs; the grab transports you to Hunter’s Nightmare.
Use the chapel lamp as your navigation anchor rather than trying to approach from another district. If nothing happens, check the order rather than searching for a physical portal: Amelia must be defeated, the altar must be examined, and the Eye must have been collected in Hunter’s Dream. Optional exploration around the square is not part of the unlock.

Why isn’t the Eye of a Blood-Drunk Hunter appearing?
Work through the checks below in sequence. The most common causes are an unexamined altar, an uninstalled add-on, or a disc-and-account region mismatch.
Amelia is defeated, but the messenger has no Eye
- Return to the Grand Cathedral and interact with the altar or skull behind the boss arena. Defeating Amelia alone is not the complete trigger.
- Verify that The Old Hunters is purchased and downloaded under the account that is running the game.
- Reload Hunter’s Dream after completing the altar interaction, then check the messenger again.
- Confirm that you are checking the current save’s Hunter’s Dream, not another profile or an older backup.
The official walkthrough places the altar interaction before the Hunter’s Dream visit, so changing the in-game time by another method does not substitute for examining the object. Do not spend time looking for a Blood Moon or an optional boss requirement; neither is part of this trigger.
The add-on is owned but does not appear in the game
Restart the console, then restore licenses before considering a reinstall. On PS5, use Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licenses. On PS4, use Settings → Account Management → Restore Licenses. After the process completes, start Bloodborne, load the affected save, and repeat the altar-to-Hunter’s-Dream check.
PlayStation’s add-on support guidance is available at PlayStation Support. Menu names can differ by country, but the license operation is the relevant recovery step. Reinstalling the whole game is not the first remedy when the account license simply has not refreshed.
A secondhand or imported disc is being used
PlayStation says the disc region and the account region must match for Store add-ons. A disc licensed for one country can therefore fail to recognize DLC bought from another region’s Store. Check the licensed country or region printed on the case and compare it with the account that purchased the expansion before buying the add-on again. Region guidance is included in the same PlayStation Support article.
This is especially important with used copies: the previous owner’s account does not transfer digital entitlement, and a package that looks complete may still be a standard edition. Verify the disc’s region and the edition name first.
The save is in New Game Plus
The Amelia defeat and the object interaction apply to the current story cycle. A contemporary access guide reported that players in New Game Plus must defeat Amelia and touch the object behind her again in that cycle. Treat the trigger as cycle-specific rather than as a one-time unlock that permanently skips future playthroughs. Once the Eye is collected in that cycle, use the same Oedon Chapel route and light the lamp again.
Checks that will not solve an access problem
You do not need to defeat an optional Amygdala boss, complete the base game, reach a prescribed level, or enable an online subscription. None of those appears in the official access sequence. Concentrate on ownership, installation, region compatibility, Amelia, the altar, the Eye, and the chapel event.

Which editions include The Old Hunters?
Compare editions by whether the DLC is included, the physical or digital format, and region compatibility—not by the base-game disc title alone. Price and stock change over time, so verify the live Store page or seller listing instead of relying on an old amount.

For a physical search, “Bloodborne Game of the Year Edition PS4 disc” describes the edition to look for; it is not a guarantee that any particular current listing contains the DLC. Inspect the seller’s photos and description for the edition name, physical format, included expansion, and licensed region. A search for a standard “Bloodborne PS4 game disc” makes sense only when paired with separately obtained, region-compatible DLC.
If you already own the base game digitally, the standalone add-on avoids buying a second copy of the campaign. If you own only a standard physical disc, compare the combined cost and convenience of a compatible add-on with a Complete or Game of the Year package. The decisive checks are inclusion, format, region, and PS5 hardware—not an unverified historical price.

Digital ownership and physical-disc compatibility remain separate questions: a PS5 can run the game while the account still lacks the expansion, and a disc can run while its region prevents a separately purchased add-on from matching.

What mistakes most often block the route?
- Leaving the cathedral without examining the object: the boss victory alone does not award the Eye.
- Looking for a Blood Moon: the altar changes the time to night; the route does not require waiting for a later Blood Moon.
- Using the wrong chapel exit: the event is outside the left-hand exit, at the right-hand end of the square.
- Expecting a menu shortcut immediately: light the Hunter’s Nightmare lamp first so its Awakening Headstone appears in Hunter’s Dream.
- Assuming a base-game disc includes the expansion: confirm the Game of the Year or Complete Edition contents, or verify a separate DLC license.
- Ignoring region pairing: an imported or secondhand disc may not match DLC purchased on a different regional account.
- Repeating the chapel trip without checking the Eye: the grab is not the first step; it follows the cathedral interaction and Hunter’s Dream visit.
What should I do after the first lamp is lit?
Use the lamp as the secure return point, then return to Hunter’s Dream and select the Hunter’s Nightmare Awakening Headstone when you want to re-enter. The expansion is a full area with its own route and encounters; the initial grab is only the transport trigger, not a one-way commitment. If you leave before lighting the lamp, repeat the chapel route after confirming that the Eye is in your inventory.

For a clean checklist, the completed route is: expansion installed; Amelia defeated; altar or skull examined; Eye received from the messenger; left-hand chapel exit taken; right-hand end of the square reached; Hunter’s Nightmare lamp lit. If all seven boxes are checked, the Awakening Headstone should provide the normal return path.

Can I enter The Old Hunters before finishing Bloodborne?
Yes. The required story checkpoint is Vicar Amelia, not the final boss or full campaign completion. Once Amelia is defeated and the altar behind her is examined, the Eye and chapel entrance become available.
Does examining the altar trigger the Blood Moon?
No. The publisher’s instructions describe the altar interaction as changing the time to night. The DLC access sequence does not ask you to trigger or wait for a Blood Moon.
