Blue Prince can make a puzzle run feel like it has swallowed an afternoon. That is the experience Ash Parrish described in The Verge’s April 12, 2025 review: an absorbing pace reminiscent of Balatro, even though the games play very differently. The comparison is about losing track of time—not shared mechanics or a claim about how long the game takes to finish.
What is Blue Prince?
Blue Prince is a strategy-puzzle adventure from Dogubomb, published by Raw Fury. Released on April 10, 2025, it puts you in Mt. Holly, a manor whose rooms shift as you explore. The stated goal is to find the rumored Room 46. The Steam listing describes the central premise as exploring a mysterious manor with shifting rooms and asks whether your steps will lead to the hidden room.
Parrish frames the setup as an inheritance challenge: the house has 45 rooms, and the heir must uncover a 46th. At each closed door, you choose which room appears. That makes exploration a planning puzzle as well as a search: room layouts, orientations, exits, resources and dead ends affect the route you can build and how far you can get.
How the shifting manor shapes each run
Draft rooms, then live with the route
The floor plan resets each day, so the same manor does not simply unfold as a fixed sequence. Room selection and resource management shape each attempt. A promising room can open an opportunity, while an awkward placement or dead end can constrain the route. Some permanent estate-blueprint upgrades can carry forward, giving the broader progression a persistent element even as the daily layout starts over.

Discoveries connect beyond a single room
The attraction is not only reaching the next door. Parrish describes mysteries that feed into one another: solving one problem can reveal a clue or route that matters later. In that sense, room drafting supplies the immediate tactical choices, while discoveries give the larger exploration its momentum.
Why it can be hard to put down
Parrish’s praise centers on the steady accumulation of discoveries. The review describes a game that asks players to move among spatial, mathematical, narrative and memory-based reasoning, then rewards connecting those strands across the manor. Each solved puzzle can make an earlier detail look newly relevant or give a later attempt a fresh direction. For the reviewer, that chain of partial answers and new questions made the pacing unusually absorbing.

Parrish reported having played about 27 hours when the review was written and still feeling there was much more to uncover. That is one reviewer’s playtime at that point, not a completion-time estimate or a promise about how long a typical player will spend with the game.
The Balatro comparison is best read in this experiential sense: both can pull a player into “one more” stretch of play, according to Parrish, but the source does not suggest that their mechanics or structure are alike. Blue Prince’s pull comes from exploration, deduction and the accumulating consequences of room choices.

Who is likely to enjoy Blue Prince?
The game is a stronger fit if you enjoy making notes, testing deductions and carrying clues forward rather than expecting every puzzle to explain itself immediately. Its changing floor plan also suits players who like adapting a plan to the options available, rather than following one fixed route. Interest in the family story may add context, though Parrish found that thread less compelling than the puzzle hunt.
- Good fit: players who enjoy multi-step mysteries, note-taking and connecting clues across separate problems.
- Potential friction: players who want consistently clear puzzle logic, dislike randomized room choices or find daily resets frustrating.
- Less central: players looking primarily for a compelling family narrative; Parrish found the puzzles more engaging than that story.
Where the puzzles can frustrate
The review does not describe every puzzle as equally legible. Parrish found some mysteries satisfying but said later symbols in one puzzle felt less intuitive. A puzzle hunt built around connecting clues can be rewarding when a deduction clicks, but opacity can also make progress feel arbitrary if the clues do not point clearly enough toward the intended interpretation.

No particular product is established as required. Still, a journal or pen is a sensible optional aid for tracking clues, room connections and deductions. Parrish’s review highlights note-taking as part of the experience, and Localthunk, creator of Balatro, wrote on the Steam page: “Blue prince is already one of the best games I’ve ever played and i still feel like I’m scratching the surface. Get a journal, a pen, and buy the game already.” That is promotional praise hosted by the game’s store, not an independent evaluation or a tested recommendation.
