On Windows, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun stores campaign saves in %LOCALAPPDATA%BoltgunSavedSaveGames<user-id> (normally C:Users<Username>AppDataLocalBoltgunSavedSaveGames<SteamID>). On Steam Deck, the Windows build runs through Proton, so the same folder is below Steam’s Proton prefix: /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2005010/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Boltgun/Saved/SaveGames/<user-id>. Quit the game completely before copying or replacing anything, keep a dated backup, and handle Steam Cloud carefully so it does not overwrite a restored save.

Where are Boltgun saves stored?

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is the Auroch Digital and Focus Entertainment game released for Windows on 23 May 2023. Its Steam App ID is 2005010. The location depends on the storefront and operating system, but the ordinary Windows build uses the game’s Local AppData folder rather than Documents, LocalLow, Roaming, or the installation directory.

Platform or edition Save location What is stored there
Windows Steam, Epic Games Store or GOG build %LOCALAPPDATA%BoltgunSavedSaveGames<user-id> Campaign slot and autosave files
Windows full path example C:Users<Username>AppDataLocalBoltgunSavedSaveGames<SteamID> The numbered user folder contains the save files
Steam Deck internal library /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2005010/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Boltgun/Saved/SaveGames/<user-id> The Windows save path mirrored inside Proton
Steam Deck or Linux Flatpak Steam ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/data/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2005010/, then the same pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Boltgun/Saved/SaveGames tree Proton prefix and Boltgun saves
Microsoft Store/Xbox Play Anywhere %LOCALAPPDATA%PackagesFocusHomeInteractiveSA.Boltgun-Windows_4hny5m903y3g0SystemAppDatawgs<user-id> Microsoft’s Windows Gaming save container

The folder name is SaveGames in the canonical path. A community post calls the same area “Saved Games”; it is still the BoltgunSaved tree. The number is normally your platform user identifier, so do not rename it. Inside it, filenames show dates and whether a file is a user save or an autosave.

Edition, installation and hardware context

Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG Windows releases use the AppData location above. The Microsoft Store/Xbox Play Anywhere edition is the exception and uses the Packages...wgs container. The Forges of Corruption expansion and the Forges of Corruption Edition do not create a different Steam save root. Do not mix these files with Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun II; the sequel has a different App ID and its own save structure.

The Steam listing specifies 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB RAM and 5 GB of free storage. Minimum graphics are a 1 GB VRAM Radeon HD 7770 or GeForce GTX 560; the recommended tier is 3 GB VRAM, such as an RX 580 or GTX 780 Ti. Those figures describe installing the game, not the size of a save archive. No official save-file size or exact slot-count specification is published, so a normal USB-C flash drive has ample room. The game is sold digitally through Steam, Epic, GOG and Microsoft Store rather than on a physical PC disc. Steam’s listed price has been $21.99, with a $5.99 Forges of Corruption expansion and a $26.58 bundle, but storefront prices and discounts change; buying the game is not required to preserve an existing folder.

How do I find the save folder on Windows?

The quickest route is the environment-variable shortcut, which works even when AppData is hidden.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Finish your session and choose the game’s exit option. Wait until Boltgun and Steam have closed any save activity.
  2. Press Win+R.
  3. Enter %LOCALAPPDATA%BoltgunSavedSaveGames and press Enter.
  4. Open the numbered user-id folder. This is the folder to copy; do not copy only one file unless you intentionally want one slot.

If the shortcut opens an empty location, turn on hidden files in File Explorer with View → Show → Hidden items, then check C:Users<Username>AppDataLocalBoltgunSaved manually. Verify that you are using the same Windows account that runs the game. A game installed through Steam, Epic or GOG normally still writes to this AppData path.

What is the separate configuration file?

Graphics, safe-zone, FOV and similar settings are in %LOCALAPPDATA%BoltgunSavedConfigWindowsNoEditorGameUserSettings.ini. Copy the Config folder as an optional second backup if you want those settings after a reinstall; it is not needed to restore campaign slots.

How do I back up Boltgun saves on a Windows PC?

Use a complete, dated copy of the numbered folder. A zip archive is convenient for keeping several generations and the files are small; the game’s 5 GB storage requirement is for the installation, not the saves.

  1. Quit Boltgun fully. Do not copy while a level, pause menu or save operation is open. Open files can leave you with a corrupt or incomplete backup.
  2. Open %LOCALAPPDATA%BoltgunSavedSaveGames and locate the numbered user-id folder.
  3. Copy that entire folder to a USB-C flash drive, portable SSD, another internal disk or a cloud folder you control. Alternatively, select its .sav files and create a zip or RAR archive.
  4. Name the copy with the date and useful progress information, such as Boltgun-2026-10-30-before-reinstall.zip. Keep more than one dated generation if the files are important.
  5. If settings matter, separately copy SavedConfig.

For a Windows reinstall, make this copy before formatting or removing the old user profile. If the old disk is still readable, mount it and retrieve the old account’s AppDataLocalBoltgunSaved tree before installing the game again.

Which backup target is best?

A USB-C flash drive is the simplest physical option for a Steam Deck and works on a PC with a USB-C port or adapter. A portable SSD is more durable and useful when you are backing up an entire game library, but it is unnecessary for the small save folder alone. A second internal disk protects against an accidental game uninstall but not against disk failure; keep at least one dated copy away from the game drive. A cloud folder you control is another copy, but it is separate from Steam Cloud and should not be allowed to synchronize the entire Steam userdata parent indiscriminately.

How do I find Boltgun saves on Steam Deck?

Steam Deck uses the Windows build through Proton. The Windows path is therefore correct, but it is nested under the compatibility prefix for App ID 2005010. You must use Desktop Mode because the standard Game Mode file browser does not expose the full path.

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode and open Dolphin.
  2. Show hidden files by pressing Ctrl+H, or choose More → View → Show Hidden Files. The .local directory is hidden until this is enabled.
  3. For internal storage, open /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2005010/pfx/drive_c/.
  4. Continue through users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Boltgun/Saved/SaveGames and open the numbered user-id folder.
  5. If Boltgun is installed in a microSD or other Steam library, inspect that library’s steamapps/compatdata/2005010/pfx/ as well. Prefixes often remain on internal storage even when the game files are on the card, so check both locations.

On a desktop Linux installation using Flatpak Steam, begin at ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/data/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2005010/ and follow the same Proton path. Do not assume that a Windows answer pasted into a Deck file browser will work: the Linux filesystem root is different even though the folders inside the prefix mirror Windows.

Steam lists Boltgun as Steam Deck Verified. That status concerns compatibility and controls, not backup behavior. The Deck still needs a readable Proton prefix, and deleting or recreating that prefix can remove local saves if no independent copy exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I back up and restore saves on Steam Deck?

Back up the numbered SaveGames user folder, not the entire Proton prefix. A USB-C flash drive is a practical target for a Deck; you can also use another folder or a zip archive on the SD card, provided it is not the only copy.

  1. Quit Boltgun in Game Mode.
  2. Switch to Desktop Mode, reveal hidden files, and open the App ID 2005010 prefix path.
  3. Copy SaveGames<user-id> to your backup destination, or archive its files.
  4. Record the date and which campaign or slots the archive contains.

To restore, quit the game, return to Desktop Mode, and paste the backup into the same prefix path, replacing the current contents only after you have copied the current folder somewhere safe. When moving a save between Deck and Windows, copy the files inside SaveGames<user-id> rather than copying the Proton prefix root. The prefix contains machine-specific data that is not needed on the other computer.

Should Steam Cloud be enabled when I restore a save?

There is conflicting public evidence about Boltgun’s Steam Cloud support. Players in a June 2023 Steam discussion reported that cloud saves worked when enabled, while a launch-day Steam Deck HQ review said the game did not support cloud saves; a 2026 Steam feature listing also omitted a Steam Cloud badge. Treat the in-client setting as the authority for your installation instead of assuming either answer.

  1. In Steam, open Steam → Settings → Cloud and make sure Enable Steam Cloud is on if you want synchronization generally.
  2. For Boltgun specifically, right-click it in your library, choose Properties → General, and inspect Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud for [game].
  3. Before a manual restore, turn that per-game checkbox off. This prevents an older cloud copy from replacing the files you just pasted.
  4. Launch Boltgun and confirm that the intended slots load. Only then re-enable the checkbox if you want cloud synchronization.
  5. If Steam presents a cloud conflict, choose the local files option when the local folder is the restored copy. Read the dates in the dialog carefully before confirming.

Cloud synchronization is convenient for moving between two computers when it is actually active, but a manual USB or disk copy is the dependable fallback after a Windows reinstall, a deleted Proton prefix or a cloud conflict. Do not delete compatdata/2005010 as a troubleshooting shortcut before making a save backup: some games keep saves and settings inside that prefix, and deleting it can remove them permanently.

How do I restore a downloaded or archived campaign save on Windows?

Use a save from the same game edition and a compatible game version where possible. Keep the current files until the replacement has been verified.

  1. Close Boltgun and Steam’s game process completely.
  2. Make a backup of the current %LOCALAPPDATA%BoltgunSavedSaveGames<user-id> folder.
  3. Extract the downloaded archive. Do not leave the files buried inside an extra nested folder such as SaveGamesSaveGames<user-id>.
  4. Place the extracted save files in your own numbered user-id folder at C:Users<Username>AppDataLocalBoltgunSavedSaveGames<user-id>. Keep the existing folder name if the archive came from another account; the folder identifies your local user.
  5. Start the game with per-game Steam Cloud disabled. Check each campaign slot and autosave.
  6. After confirming the result, decide whether to keep cloud disabled or enable it again. If a conflict appears, retain the local files you just checked.

For a Steam Deck restore, perform the same operation in the Proton prefix while in Desktop Mode. A Windows save and a Deck save use the same game-file structure, but you must copy the save contents into the Deck’s own user-id folder rather than copying a Windows drive path literally.

Can I keep more Boltgun save slots than the game shows?

The game has an in-game save-slot limit, but no publisher specification gives the exact number. A community workaround is to archive older .sav files outside the user-id folder, then put them back when you want to revisit that campaign.

  1. Disable Boltgun’s per-game Steam Cloud setting before swapping files.
  2. Quit the game.
  3. Zip the older user or autosave files and label the archive with its date and progress.
  4. Leave the active files in SaveGames<user-id> so the game can create new saves.
  5. When you want an archived campaign, close the game, back up the current set, extract the older files into the folder, and launch again.

This is a file-management workaround, not a developer-supported extra-slot feature. Keep each archive separate and never overwrite your only copy while switching campaigns.

Which paths should I avoid?

For the Steam, Epic and GOG Windows builds, start with AppDataLocalBoltgunSavedSaveGames. Template pages sometimes point to Documents, AppDataLocalLow, AppDataRoaming, or an Unreal-style path under steamappscommon; those locations are not the canonical Boltgun campaign-save location.

If the Local AppData folder is genuinely empty, confirm that you launched the game at least once with the intended account, check for another Windows user profile, and inspect the correct Steam library prefix on Deck. Only then search the installation tree as a last resort. Do not paste Microsoft Store saves into the Steam AppData folder: the Microsoft edition uses the separate PackagesFocusHomeInteractiveSA.Boltgun-Windows_4hny5m903y3g0SystemAppDatawgs container.

What should I copy before deleting or moving a Proton prefix?

Copy the Boltgun SaveGames<user-id> folder first, and include SavedConfig if you want settings. The Proton prefix also contains compatibility data, but transferring or synchronizing the whole prefix is unnecessary and can create machine-specific conflicts.

If a third-party synchronizer is used, limit it to the save files. Steam’s broader userdata cloud structure contains a remote directory, cache metadata and per-machine statistics; syncing the parent indiscriminately can produce Deck-versus-desktop conflicts. A dated archive of the actual Boltgun save folder is easier to inspect and recover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the essential checks before you overwrite a save?

  • Boltgun is fully closed, including any running game process.
  • You identified the correct edition: Steam/Epic/GOG AppData, Steam Deck Proton prefix, or Microsoft Store wgs.
  • You copied the current folder before replacing it.
  • The archive contains the files directly, not an extra nested directory.
  • Steam Cloud is disabled during the manual replacement.
  • You tested the restored slots before deleting the backup.
  • You kept at least one dated backup away from the game drive.

Boltgun’s save system is local-file based even when cloud synchronization is available, so preserving that numbered folder is the key protection against a reinstall, a damaged prefix or an unwanted cloud overwrite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a Boltgun save from Windows work on Steam Deck?

Usually, the campaign files use the same Windows folder structure because the Deck runs the Windows build through Proton. Copy the files inside the numbered SaveGames folder into the Deck’s App ID 2005010 prefix, and keep a backup in case a version or cloud conflict appears.

Where are Boltgun settings stored separately from saves?

Settings are under %LOCALAPPDATA%BoltgunSavedConfigWindowsNoEditorGameUserSettings.ini on Windows, with the equivalent path inside Proton on Deck. Copying this file preserves preferences such as graphics and safe-zone settings but does not restore campaign progress by itself.

What happens if I delete the Steam Deck compatdata folder?

Deleting compatdata/2005010 can remove saves or settings that were stored inside the Proton prefix. Make a copy of Boltgun’s SaveGames folder before removing a prefix, even if you believe cloud synchronization is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Boltgun have a published exact save-slot count?

No exact slot number is established in publisher or platform information. Players report a limit and commonly work around it by archiving older .sav files while Steam Cloud is disabled.

Where should Microsoft Store saves be placed?

The Microsoft Store/Xbox Play Anywhere edition uses %LOCALAPPDATA%PackagesFocusHomeInteractiveSA.Boltgun-Windows_4hny5m903y3g0SystemAppDatawgs<user-id>. Do not mix that container with the Steam or Proton AppData folder.

Does Boltgun definitely support Steam Cloud?

Public reports conflict: some players say cloud saves work, while a launch review and a later feature listing omit Steam Cloud. Check Steam’s global Cloud setting and Boltgun’s per-game checkbox. Disable the per-game option before a manual restore.

Why can’t I see the save folder on my Deck?

Use Desktop Mode and Dolphin, then press Ctrl+H to show hidden files. The path begins in /home/deck/.local. If the game is on a microSD card, inspect that library’s steamapps/compatdata/2005010 too, while remembering that the prefix may remain on internal storage.

How do I avoid a nested-folder restore mistake?

Open the archive before copying. The numbered user-id folder should contain the save files directly under SaveGames; avoid creating a second SaveGames directory inside it. Preserve the local numbered folder name when importing a save from another account.

Is a portable SSD required for Boltgun backups?

No. The saves are small, so a USB-C flash drive, another disk or a zip in a folder you control is sufficient. A portable SSD is useful for broader backups, not necessary for these campaign files.

The Bottom Line

Back up BoltgunSavedSaveGames<user-id> while the game is closed, use the Proton-prefix equivalent on Deck, and disable Boltgun’s per-game Steam Cloud setting before replacing files. Keep a dated copy until the restored slots have loaded successfully.
