What did the Borderlands 4 teaser trailer show?
The teaser gave viewers an initial look at a new planet in the Borderlands universe. The 2024 announcement did not identify that world by name or lay out the game’s full set of locations, characters, or gameplay features. Later official launch information identified the planet as Kairos and named the antagonist as the Timekeeper; those details came after the reveal.

2K presented Borderlands 4 as the fourth mainline game and seventh overall entry in the franchise. The announcement said players would again take the role of a Vault Hunter searching for alien treasure.
When was Borderlands 4 announced, and when did it release?
2K and Gearbox Software announced the game on August 20, 2024, during gamescom Opening Night Live. The announcement’s wording was “Borderlands 4 Coming In 2025,” which described the planned release window at that time.

Later, 2K reported that Borderlands 4 launched on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. 2K listed Nintendo Switch 2 availability for October 3, 2025. The platforms and dates here reflect the publisher’s official launch information.
What did 2K and Gearbox say about the game?
The announcement framed the reveal as the next mainline entry in a series built around Vault Hunters, alien treasure, and a new planet. Randy Pitchford, founder and President of Gearbox Entertainment Company, said: “The team and I at Gearbox have a lot we’ve wanted to do with Borderlands since we first introduced the looter shooter genre to the world with our original game.”
In the later launch notice, 2K described four new Vault Hunters, traversal mechanics, a summonable Digirunner vehicle, solo play, and co-op for up to four players. These are publisher descriptions rather than independent gameplay findings.

Which platforms and editions were announced?
The original 2024 platform list was PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games Store. Nintendo Switch 2 was not part of that initial list; 2K’s later launch notice gave it a separate October 3, 2025 availability date.

Edition content and availability can change, so check current official or local store listings for what is included and offered in your region. The official support FAQ, updated June 30, 2026, says Standard console copies are available physically or digitally, while Deluxe and Super Deluxe are digital-only. It also distinguishes the ECHO-4 merchandise bundle from the game: that bundle does not include a copy.
What does the 87 million figure mean?
2K’s August 20, 2024 announcement said the Borderlands franchise had sold in more than 87 million copies cumulatively. That is a publisher-reported franchise figure, not sales for Borderlands 4. The official materials cited here do not establish a standalone sales total for the game.
