It launched through Steam and the Epic Games Store on September 11–12, 2025, depending on storefront and region. Buy it through one of those official stores—not a third-party “PC download” site—and install it on an SSD. The game has a demanding minimum specification: Gearbox’s guidance targets roughly 1080p at 30 frames per second on Low at minimum, and 1440p at 60 FPS on Medium at recommended specifications.
Cross-platform play, online co-op, controller support, and single-player are supported. A SHiFT account is required for cross-play.

How to download Borderlands 4 on Windows
Use Steam or the Epic Games Store. Both are legitimate Windows distribution channels for Borderlands 4, and neither requires a separate download website or standalone installer.

Steam
- Install and open Steam, then sign in or create a Steam account.
- Search for Borderlands 4 and confirm that the publisher is 2K and the developer is Gearbox.
- Purchase the edition you want.
- Open Library, select Borderlands 4, and choose Install.
- Select an SSD with at least 100 GB free, preferably with additional space for patches and shader data.
- Launch the game and complete any SHiFT account or online-service prompts.
The Steam listing includes single-player, online co-op, cross-platform play, controller support, achievements, trading cards, and Family Sharing. Store prices and regional taxes change; observed US list prices were $69.99 for Standard, $99.99 for Deluxe, and $129.99 for Super Deluxe, but check the live listing before buying.

Epic Games Store
- Install the Epic Games Launcher and sign in or create an Epic account.
- Open the Borderlands 4 store page and choose an edition.
- Open Library, select the game, and click Install.
- Choose an SSD with at least 100 GB available.
- Launch the game and complete Epic, SHiFT, or other account prompts.
Epic lists Windows support, cloud saves, controller support, single-player, co-op, and cross-platform play. Its price and promotions are region-specific and can change.
Buying on Steam does not automatically grant ownership on Epic, or vice versa. Store ownership, launcher requirements, refunds, saves, and DLC entitlements may remain platform-specific even when cross-play is available.

Cross-play works across supported platforms, but it is not entirely automatic: internet access and a linked SHiFT account are required. Confirm which store your friends use before buying, then link SHiFT before inviting them.

Gearbox associates this level with approximately 1080p, 30 FPS, and the Low preset. It is a target, not a guarantee.

The recommended target is approximately 1440p at 60 FPS on Medium. Resolution, drivers, background programs, patches, upscaling, and advanced visual features can change actual performance.
How to interpret your hardware
- Below minimum: The game may launch with severe stutter or require substantial compromises. Do not assume it will be playable.
- Around minimum: Begin at 1080p, Low, with a 30 FPS target.
- Recommended or better: Begin at 1440p, Medium, then adjust upscaling and other features.
- Laptop: Compare the exact mobile GPU, power limit, cooling, and CPU—not only the desktop-equivalent name.
- Storage: The game requires an SSD. Leave more than 100 GB free for updates, shader caches, and backups.
Which Borderlands 4 edition should you buy?
Standard Edition
Choose Standard if you want the base campaign and core game, are unsure how much post-launch content you will play, or prefer to buy DLC selectively. It includes the base game only according to the official edition FAQ.
Deluxe Edition
Deluxe is aimed at players who expect to play the smaller post-launch content packs. Its Bounty Pack Bundle includes four areas with missions and bosses, four Vault Cards, new gear and weapons, Vault Hunter cosmetics, four vehicles with cosmetics, and the Firehawk’s Fury Weapon Skin.

Super Deluxe Edition
Super Deluxe adds the Deluxe content plus a Vault Hunter Pack with two new playable Vault Hunters, two Story Packs, two new map regions, additional gear and cosmetics, and the Ornate Order Pack. It makes the most sense for long-term Borderlands players and co-op groups that expect to keep playing major expansions.
These editions describe included entitlements; they do not necessarily mean every post-launch item is available immediately. Check the current store page and publisher information for release timing. Cosmetic bonuses also should not be valued the same as playable areas, missions, or characters.
What is included in the PC version?
Borderlands 4 is set on Kairos and introduces four Vault Hunters, branching skill trees, Action Skills, extensive weapon variety, and movement abilities including double-jumping, gliding, dodging, and grappling. The interconnected world includes factions, quests, dynamic events, and hover-bike traversal.
You can play solo or in four-player online co-op. Official store descriptions also highlight level scaling and individual difficulty, which should make groups with different progression or experience easier to organize, although the exact behavior can depend on the live game. Cross-platform play and controller support are available. Epic lists cloud saves, while Steam lists achievements and trading cards.
“Single-player” does not necessarily mean every feature works without internet access. Updates, account services, and cross-play require connectivity.
Best first-launch settings
- Update your GPU driver and reboot Windows.
- Launch the game and let shader compilation finish before judging frame rate or stutter.
- Start with the official baseline: 1080p Low on minimum-class hardware or 1440p Medium on recommended-class hardware.
- Use an upscaler appropriate to your GPU: DLSS for NVIDIA, FSR for AMD, XeSS for Intel, or TSR where suitable.
- Open Options > Visuals > Advanced and find Resolution Scaling and Upscaling Method.
- Establish a stable baseline before experimenting with frame generation or higher-quality settings.
- After changing graphics settings, allow shader compilation again and test for at least 15 minutes.
Upscaling and frame-generation options depend on hardware and game version. They can improve perceived smoothness but do not remove CPU, memory, storage, or shader-compilation bottlenecks.
Windows 10 GPU scheduling
Gearbox’s support guide says Windows 10 users may need to enable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling:

- Open Windows Settings and search for Graphics.
- Select Change Default graphics settings.
- Turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
- Restart the PC.
Windows 11 enables this by default according to the support guide, but verify the setting if upscaling or frame generation behaves unexpectedly.
Fix shader stutter and long compilation
Shader compilation is expected after first launch and after some graphics changes. Gearbox estimates roughly 10 minutes on most PCs. Do not repeatedly change settings while troubleshooting, because another change can trigger another compilation.
If compilation appears stuck for an unusually long time, restart the game and reboot Windows. If the problem continues, clear the shader cache:
NVIDIA
Open %LOCALAPPDATA%NVIDIADXCache and delete the large files, particularly files over 10 MB. This can also remove shader data for other applications.
AMD
Open AMD Adrenalin and select Gaming > Graphics > Reset Shader Cache. This also affects shader data for other programs.

Verify installed files
Steam: Right-click Borderlands 4 in Library, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
Epic: Open Library, select the three dots beside Borderlands 4, choose Manage > Verify.

Verification can replace missing or corrupted files without reinstalling the entire game.
Temporarily remove overlay conflicts
Disable Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, and MSI Afterburner or similar monitoring tools as a diagnostic test. Re-enable them one at a time after stability returns.

Right-click the shortcut or executable and choose Run as administrator. If necessary, test Windows 10 compatibility mode on a newer Windows installation. These are troubleshooting tests, not permanent requirements.
Check security software carefully
Antivirus or firewall software can block files or network access. Add the game folder as an exception only when appropriate. Avoid permanently disabling protection; a brief, controlled diagnostic test is safer.
Intel 13th- and 14th-generation CPUs
Gearbox’s support material cites warnings from Intel about instability affecting some 13th- and 14th-generation processors under load. Symptoms can include crashes, overheating, slowdowns, or unusually high CPU use. Not every processor is affected, and the issue should not automatically be blamed on Borderlands 4. Check your motherboard BIOS and current Intel guidance before applying any fix.
Save location and backup
The official Steam save location is:
C:Users[Windows username]DocumentsMy GamesBorderlands 4Copy this folder to another drive or a separate backup location before reinstalling the game, deleting caches, or changing files. Cloud synchronization can create conflicts and may replace local data depending on the launcher and the choice made in the prompt, so a manual backup is useful but is not an absolute guarantee against every cloud-save problem.

Practical beginner tips
- Start with one Vault Hunter long enough to learn its movement and skill system before constantly changing builds.
- Use dodging, gliding, grappling, and double-jumping instead of treating every fight like a stationary cover shooter.
- Compare gear by build purpose, not only by item level or the largest damage number.
- Agree on loot and difficulty expectations before starting a co-op session.
- Use level scaling and individual difficulty when playing with friends at different progression points, while checking the live game’s exact behavior.
- Keep separate graphics presets for combat and high-fidelity exploration if your hardware is close to its limit.
- Create a SHiFT account before inviting friends from other platforms.
Is Borderlands 4 worth buying on PC?
It is a sensible PC purchase if your system is near the recommended specification, has an SSD, and you want a loot-driven shooter with solo play, four-player co-op, movement-focused combat, and cross-platform multiplayer. Players near the minimum should expect to start at 1080p Low rather than assume high-refresh-rate performance.
Standard is the safest choice for uncertain buyers. Deluxe suits players who specifically want the Bounty Pack content, while Super Deluxe is for committed players who expect to play the future Vault Hunter and story content. Choose the store that best fits your existing library and current price, but remember that cross-play does not make Steam and Epic ownership interchangeable.
Windows PC purchase and setup checklist
- Buy from Steam or the Epic Games Store.
- Check the live regional price and edition contents before checkout.
- Reserve at least 100 GB on an SSD, plus patch headroom.
- Have 16 GB RAM and 8 GB VRAM for the minimum target; 32 GB RAM is listed for recommended performance.
- Update Windows and your GPU driver.
- Link a SHiFT account for cross-play.
- Let shader compilation finish before evaluating performance.
- Verify files if the game crashes or fails to launch.
- Back up saves before deleting caches or reinstalling.
