Borderlands 4 is a first-person looter-shooter set on Kairos, where you take on the Timekeeper as a Vault Hunter, using action skills and scavenged weapons and gear to fight your way forward. This guide covers the game’s premise, characters, exploration, progression, platforms, and co-op so you can decide how to start. It does not provide mission-by-mission routes or patch-specific builds.

What is Borderlands 4 about?

Borderlands 4 takes place on Kairos, a planet ruled by the Timekeeper. You play as one of four new Vault Hunters and battle enemies while developing your character and hunting for weapons and gear. The publisher describes it as a first-person looter-shooter built around combat, action skills, branching skill trees, movement, and gear collection. Read the official Borderlands 4 FAQ for the publisher’s overview.

Which platforms can you play on?

The official FAQ lists these platforms. Check that page for the latest availability in your region, since platform listings can change.

Platform What the official FAQ lists
PC Steam and Epic Games Store
PlayStation PlayStation 5
Xbox Xbox Series X|S

Those are the platforms named in the official FAQ; this list does not establish support for other platforms.

How does co-op work?

The publisher’s FAQ says online co-op supports up to four players, including cross-play. Online play requires an internet connection, and cross-play requires a SHiFT account. Local split-screen supports two players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

How you play Players and requirements
Online co-op Up to four players; internet connection required
Cross-play Supported in online co-op; SHiFT account required
Local split-screen Two players on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S

These are publisher-stated specifications in the official FAQ. Console online subscriptions may also be required by the relevant platform; check the platform’s terms for your account and region.

Which Vault Hunter should you choose?

The four new Vault Hunters named by the publisher are Vex, Rafa, Amon, and Harlowe. The official roster establishes their names, but the cited overview does not provide enough detail to rank them or recommend a strongest character.

Vault Hunter What this guide can establish
Vex Named as one of the four new Vault Hunters
Rafa Named as one of the four new Vault Hunters
Amon Named as one of the four new Vault Hunters
Harlowe Named as one of the four new Vault Hunters

For a first playthrough, compare the in-game descriptions of each character’s action skills and branching skill trees, then choose the one whose abilities sound most appealing. Treat that as a preference decision, not a tier list: performance rankings and current builds need character-specific, patch-aware evidence. The roster and progression overview appear in the official FAQ and game information page.

What should you know about exploring Kairos?

The publisher’s overview describes Kairos as a world of connected regions, with vehicle traversal and ECHO-4 providing navigation support. That establishes the broad shape of exploration, but not a complete route through any particular mission or region. Use ECHO-4 as your navigation aid while exploring; for a specific objective, follow the in-game mission guidance rather than relying on a general overview as a route map. See the official game information page.

How do weapons and character progression fit together?

Combat combines your Vault Hunter’s action skills and skill-tree choices with weapons and other gear you collect. The publisher also describes licensed weapon parts and character customization. These are useful systems to keep in view as you play, but the overview does not establish exact drop locations, drop rates, or an optimal farming loop.

  • Action skills: Use your character’s abilities as part of combat; review their descriptions in-game.
  • Skill trees: Branching trees let you develop your Vault Hunter. Consider the abilities and upgrades you want to build around before choosing a direction.
  • Weapons and gear: The game centers on finding equipment, including weapons with licensed parts. Compare new finds with what you are using rather than assuming a particular item is always best.
  • Customization: The official overview also identifies character customization as part of the game.

The FAQ and official game information page describe these systems at an overview level.

What are sensible first-session tips?

  1. Choose a Vault Hunter by ability preference. Read each character’s available descriptions rather than looking for an unsupported “best” pick.
  2. Learn the movement and navigation tools as you go. Kairos has connected regions, vehicle traversal, and ECHO-4 navigation support, so use the tools the game presents while moving between objectives.
  3. Try the systems before committing to a supposed meta. Pay attention to how your action skills, skill-tree options, and collected gear work together for your preferred approach.
  4. Decide whether you want to play solo or with others. Online groups can include up to four players; two players can share local split-screen on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

The publisher has an official quick-tips article. Its recommendations may be useful alongside this overview; the points above are general orientation, not quotations or a summary of that article.

What PC settings and specs should you check?

The official PC features page lists adjustable graphics options and upscaling choices including DLSS, FSR, TSR, and XeSS. The hardware requirements are not reproduced here, so check the page directly for its current minimum and recommended specifications before deciding whether a PC meets them. Available settings and performance depend on your hardware and configuration; the list of upscalers alone does not establish which choice will perform best on a particular system. See the official Borderlands 4 PC specs and features page.

Where can you find mission walkthroughs and build advice?

A useful walkthrough needs to match the mission or objective you are on; a useful build guide needs to match your Vault Hunter and the game’s current patch. The official overview pages linked here establish the game’s characters and core systems, but they do not provide mission-by-mission directions, a character tier list, current optimized builds, or loot-farming data. For those questions, look for a guide that names the exact mission, character, or item and states the patch or version it covers. Avoid treating an unqualified drop-rate or “best build” claim as definitive.
